"W-w-wait!? Are you really leaving? What about safety in numbers?" But it was too late; the other two kids had already left, leaving poor Joel all alone. This was something that he was completely unused to. Back in the coal mines, everyone was a fervent practitioner of the buddy system, no one alone, due to how dangerous it could be by yourself. Down in those mines, whether or not they liked each other, those boys were all in that hell together, so they had to look out for each other. In fact, Joel couldn't even remember a time when he had been completely and utterly alone.

At least down in the coal mines, he was in familiar territory. Here however, everything was strange and new. He didn't know about any of the dangers in this place, or even the signs to look out for. So despite having achieved his life long dream of finally seeing the sky, Joel was feeling far more vulnerable then ever. "I suppose now that I've seen the sky at last, I could die happy...but big brother would be mad at me if I let myself be satisfied with just that" Taking a deep breath, he gathered his courage before running to the castle at full speed.

As much as it still made sense, he had to agree with the other boy (Darius was it?) "yeah, I guess you're right. If this really was heaven, then I'm sure my big bro would have been here to greet me." Getting back to he feet, he wiped the tears from his eyes "but that just begs the question; where are we? I'm happy to finally be out of the coal mines and everything, but I'm not sure I like being dropped in some strange place like this" he said, more to himself then to the others with him. Joel was brought out of his musings when he noticed all of the strange creatures "oh wow. I didn't notice them" he said out loud, unaware that he was looking at things that shouldn't exist. "Should...should we ask them where we are. I mean unless either of you know, that is" he asked the other two kids with him

As unnerving as the strange kid that had somehow seemingly teleported inside of the building, he wasn't acting hostile. Because of that, Joel wasn't able to do or say anything to him. However when he somehow unlocked the door for them, Joel was ecstatic. Who cares that he suddenly turned into mist, or that he left them with an weird message before he left? Joel was finally going to see the sky. Rushing outside, he took in the sky above him, and fell to his knees, with tears streaming down his face "it...it's so beautiful. I've made it big bro...I've finally made it." In his excitement, he failed to notice anything other than the sky. "I...I still have no idea how I got here, but I made it. Are you still watching me from heaven big bro? And that's when a terrifying thought entered his mind 'wait. Could I be...dead?' To Joel, that was quickly sounding more plausible as the idea rolled around in his head, until he started to believe it. Turning to the other two kids with him, he said "um, you guys? Well, I think...I think that we all d-died...and that this is heaven."

The sound of another person's voice shocked Joel out of his drilling. Fumbling with his tool, he dropped the drill. Quickly picking it back up, he inspected it for any kind of damage. Once he was sure that it was still fine, he turned to address the stranger talking to him. It was then that he realized something; he really hadn't seen this person before. She was a complete stranger. Joel hadn't seen a new person in years. Had he been a black blooded person of ambiguous gender, he might have vocalized his feelings with 'I don't know how to deal with this.' However his blood was in fact red, and he was very much a guy, so he had to settle for something else. "My...my name is Joel?" It was about this time that Joel was starting to realize something else very important "wait...you're a girl!? And you look clean! But...but how is that-" Joel froze when a thought occurred to him. Quickly checking his hair and face, he made yet another startling discovery "...I'm clean too!? How is any of this possible!? Wait...if I'm clean but don't remember bathing, then that means...someone bathed my while I was unconscious! I feel so violated. I thought it was good news that I wasn't in the mines any more...but now I don't know. Oh well...at least I can finally see the sky."

Despite just waking up, Joel could instantly tell something was very wrong. He couldn't feel the normal dankness of the coal mine, nor was his back on the cold hard dirt floor of said mine. For as long as he could remember, those two things had been constants as he woke up to him, so to have them both suddenly gone got his attention and fast. Jolting up, he quickly saw that he was in some strange building, and not the coal mines. There were also two other kids he didn't recognize here with him. But even with all of that, there was something else that stood out to him 'the guards are gone.' With that sudden realization, he bolted to his feet in search of an exit. Finding what looked like a door, he rushed at it...only to find it locked. "Come on! Open. Open. Open! I've waited too long to see the sky, I'm sure as hell not letting a door stand in my way! He cried out as he struggled to open the door. Deciding to take a different approach, he reached for his hand cranked drill, which was fastened to his waist. Taking it in his hands, he got to work drilling a hole in it "fine, you want to play rough? I can play rough." In his zealous need to get outside, he had completely forgotten about the others with him
