I third this idea, perhaps something like a newcomer's guide PM or something like that instead of a PM just pointing them to rules and such.

Maybe also some bits on site "culture" since I knew I sort of went into that while talking to a relatively newer member.

@MahzNot sure if anyone is suffering from this, but whenever I go into the "full screen" mode for the reply box and there's an "unread" tag in one of the Thread tags (namely character for me), the Unread tag seems to just be stuck there until I actually go to the tab to get it to shut up.
