Any of the rest of you guys, pick up a cheap romance novel next time you are at a grocery store or wal-mart. One of those ones with an attractive couple, the guy wearing no shirt, and both of them dressed up in some stereotypical costume. Flip through it. If you doubt your own writing ability, that is all it will take to make you feel better.

Though seriously, I had took a writing class years ago where the teacher explained to us how those chain-produced romance novels work. They send you a packet that tells you what to write and how to write it. It's color-by-numbers literature. She said that a lot of semi-famous authors write those under assumed names as a way to collect some extra cash.

I was listening to an NPR interview with a guy whose dad (and mom as editor or something) wrote pornographic novels to the same effect. His dad would legit have a card catalog of descriptions, plot types, and other things that he would basically stitch together to form a novel which he'd sell.

He didn't find out until after the fact and I think he said when his dad was either very old or dying he'd claim he invented the modern erotica genre; although he takes that with a bit of salt since something like fifty other people claimed the same and no one could tell anyone else otherwise.

It was fucking magical.

Being someone who lives in the middle east (which might explain my reptilian preferences and affinity to the heat), it's not...fun.
What I especially hate is the process of visa acquisition. Like, if you're born in certain countries, nobody bats an eye, even if you're awful. But if you're say, Syrian for example, everyone loses their shit.

I have friends who suffer it.

From an American perspective to it ended a perfectly fine period of relative sanity here in the state and basically brought back fear politics where anyone or everyone is an enemy. And before I was in Highschool we were in two dumb-shit wars.

Marcel Hondo-Demissie lead a Congolese revolution against Ethiopia, who had managed to seize the area on a promise of protection against a withering Belgian Empire, Marcel had been born and raised during the era of the Belgian Congo and had witnessed the colonial abuses. By the seventies the Congo was swept up by the Ethiopian Pan-African Empire. But to Marcel there was little difference, in the mid-seventies he launched a revolution to oust Ethiopian suzerainty of the Congo and had succeded enough to seize Kinshasha and declare it an independent state for a brief time. While known as a brilliant strategist who had lead a rag-tag army to beat an armored column, he was also notable for his appreciation of classical music and women's clothes and make-up and not shy about it.

Ultimately, his revolution was put to the end by the Somali-born field marshal of the Ethiopian Pan-African army, Hassan al-Somalied (likely misspelled) who to draw out and cause tension in his ranks amputated the arms of the children of the tribal group that had been Marcel's largest supporters. The dissension and personal fury by the tribal commanders to put an end to Hassan's brutality sufficiently destabilized his ranks and he was able to be defeated and captured. And while Marcel faced execution, the respect shared between two commanding officers was enough that Hassan laid out the reality to him, suggesting that suicide would be a more honorable alternative than execution. Hassan gave him his knife, which Marcel killed himself with.

Hassan would later defend the amputation of the limbs of infants and children and deflect criticism with, "There's no treachery in winning" and that only treachery and dishonor is what's shouted by the losers.
