| Origin & Backstory |

Kyle Rayner was born to Aaron and Mara Rayner, an agent of ARGUS and a recipient of Social Security respectively. Early on in Kyle's life, Aaron died on duty. But because of this, his mother's checks were padded beyond the standard payouts to those on the program. Though there is no mistaking he has no special non-civilian clearance, many high-ranking government officials recognize the Rayners for the family's sacrifices towards a better world.

Growing up in Los Angelos, Kyle managed to go through the severe LA gang wars relatively unscathed, having learned when to wear what colors and how to peacefully defuse conflicts. Even from elementary school though, he had been surrounded by the gangs at all times and had long been under pressure to join them. Over the years he has been panged by seeing his own friends attempt to kill each other because of who else they were friends with, the colors they'd worn, misinterpreted gestures, and even their own ethnicities.

Through it all Kyle had chosen to express himself through art, the pencil being his most reliable companion. His sketches have even won citywide contests and been nominated for national attention. Kyle is without a doubt a gifted art student with specialized skill in biological forms and still lifes. Most often his works are photorealistic, which has led to him being sought out by friends.

Because of his gift with the pencil, he was sought out by a local gang. Afraid of being attacked if he rejected their request, he accepted. All in all, he was taught to use a tattoo gun and forced to portray the gang's logo on a fleshy canvas thirty-two times over. Now thoroughly affliated with the gang, Kyle told his mom. His mother, as one would expect, struggled for a solution. A panicking fit convinced her to pack their bags almost instantly, going from Los Angelos to New York City.

Once in New York City, he was enrolled in the nearest High School, Midtown, where he found himself socially isolated. It wasn't that he necessarily felt there was no one he could relate to, but there was no one he wanted to relate to. Against his own will, he was enrolled in the art club where he exchanged sketches, paintings, and ideas with his peers. Before long, he was drawn into the groundbreaking craze that was superheroes. He began to draw masks, costumes, and weapons in his free time before applying himself to studying history.

By investigating the exploits of the previous Justice Society, he gained a love of studying history and passionately nurtured a love for superheroics. A short while later, he created his own speculative fiction comic series that touched on the lives of the original Flash, Hourman, Green Lantern, and captured them all in stunning detail. His comics capturing the Golden Age of superheroes has since developed a cult following on the internet and has a popular Myspace page.

Having overcome the temptations of gang recruitment and avoided succumbing to a life of total dysphoria, he feels somewhat self-confident in his ability to follow through with his decisions and intends to make the world a better place by following his dreams.

Creativity

He recognizes that there is more than one way to skin a cat. This is useful when probing seemingly invincible enemies for a weakness. Even if his ring is, for some reason, ineffective he is prepared to perform environmental attacks, deception, or legitimate diplomacy if the need be.

Drawing

Kyle is capable of drawing highly realistic images with a pencil at (relatively) high speeds. For this reason, any constructs he makes are likely to have a large amount of nooks and crannies, assuming they're not simple geometrical shapes.

Green Lantern Ring

The flagship tool of the GLs allows the wearer to craft holographic, green masses out of concentrated light, directed by their own willpower. Auxilary functions include wireless communications, access to a comprehensive galactic encyclopedia, atmospheric synthesis, and a universal positioning device.

Indomitable Willpower

Necessary for all Green Lanterns is the ability to face their fears. Kyle is certainly capable of doing so, which the ring is able to detect despite his youthful naivety masking his bravery from other sentient life forms.

Kyle suffers from Women in refrigerators syndrome. Listing people he cares about or is involved with would be bad news. But you can expect to see Lanterns, Guardians, various alien species, Soranik Natu, Amon Sur & Black Sun, and the Spider Guild. Kyle is highly unlikely to really be alone. I figured it would be beneficial for storytelling purposes to adapt his tendency to create construct companions from simple battle strategy to character development. So expect a decent amount of imaginary friends (see Circle of Fire for further elaboration of the concept).

What is the nature of the story you want to tell?

It's about great power and great responsibility. Optimism and realism. Freedom and security. But mostly its about feeling like everyone's counting on you, trying to live up to their expectations, filling giant shoes, and figuring things out on the fly. Kyle is steeped in idealism and a simple sense of justice, but doesn't always know how to make the best of his circumstances.

Is this just another Green Lantern?

Yes, for once. He doesn't carry the entity Ion, he isn't the focus of an experiment, and he wasn't a vigilante beforehand. He's Kyle Rayner, an Earthling artist and millenial. But that's probably a welcome change. He'll be the equivalent of a Green Lantern Spider-Man, with his mom worrying about him and his responsibilities competing personally and epically.

How many other people's territory are you crossing into?

That of [Gowi] and [Morden Man]. If there's any involvement with Relic, the Nova Corps, or the Black Lanterns, it isn't my idea. Instead, a focus of mine is going to be the many aliens out there who need the protection only a Green Lantern could offer. Naturally I'll dip my hand into Gowi's bowl of Manhunter action. But by and large, my plans are not a rehash of New Guardians, Blackest Night, or any recent GL "events". Despite wanting to focus on aliens for assignments, Kyle will be drawn back to Earth emotionally for visits whenever he can, whether he is reprimanded for spending time on the third rock from the sun can be decided by the Oans (worked out between myself and the other Lanterns).

What are your major influences?

The rules of engagement in Green Lantern fiction have changed since Geoff Johns took over. Rather than ignoring his impressive body of work and contributions to DCs most unique superhero, I choose to acknowledge it and add it to all that has come before. Throughout the nineties, Kyle Rayner was the only Green Lantern. These are my greatest influences. Even though there are thousands of other Lanterns, Kyle will feel the weight of his sector on his shoulders and often there will be no one to lift it off. Despite the Oan army's numbers, there aren't exactly a lot of them to go around. And the story I want to tell is about the individual underqualified for a job that no one could ever hope to live up to.

Do you have any immediate plans?

Yessiree Bob. First off, Kyle's life will be abruptly interrupted by a recruitment into the Corps with no explanation initially. He won't be aware who Carol Danvers was initially. After a few increasingly difficult training sessions, it's directly off to battle on Mars where he'll face hard contact against an oppressive bunch of White Martians. Spinning out of the chaotic battle is drama I won't elaborate on for the time being.

Alt any time throughout the training period I would be delighted for him to be met by Alan Scott, as I'd imagine them getting to know one another. In all honesty it would be really neat given they are completely different generations of Lantern.

Freddy Freeman; Thor

1984-2003 ¥ Beginnings
A beautiful child was born in 1984, christened Frederick Freeman Junior. In the upper middle class, he grew up with his parents, watching relatively little television compared to others at the time. At five years old he was too young to understand that his parents were getting a divorce. It was as though his world had been split in two. In the end, his father gained full custody, while his mother took many of their belongings and left, rarely to be heard from again for several years.

Freddy made a name for himself in middle school, applying natural talent and incorruptible willpower to the task of proving he was worth something. In the ultimate telegraphing of his worth, he tried out for football, basketball, and every other major sport available. Having a limited amount of free time, bound by his own mortality, he had to choose a sport. He chose basketball.

Despite dominating the competition and inspiring his team to victory, he quit the team and left for tennis. Tennis? Yes, tennis. Despite seeming arbitrary and unnecessary, he truly flourished in the new path. He'd even been contacted by a celebrity player who was making a trip to Fawcett City, Oklahoma. They played a surprisingly long match, in which Freddy performed well beyond the pro's expectations. In the end, footage hosted on Youtube caught the attention of college scouts nationwade.

At sixteen years old, his routine was derailed by a fishing trip to Yellowstone Park. He and his grandfather were having a delightful conversation when a sudden purple emmission of power threw his grandfather into the waters and himself a good distance the other way. It was a mutant attack, in which a fugitive attempted escape by making pursuit the least attractive option to authorities. The true aftermath was this: Freddy had become a paraplegic and his grandpa had drowned after suffering of a punctured kidney.

Freddy's father was informed that he'd been tossed into a tree with damage so severe it would be a miracle for him to ever walk again. For a long time, even when he was conscious, he'd stare silently at the television. Watching interesting people do amazing things. Just watching though, he could hardly breathe, let alone walk.

When he was discharged, he immediately set down the hard road to recovery. Despite trebulation in his abdomen, he managed to perform a single crunch. Before long, his upper body was in phenomonal condition thanks to his own regimen and devotion. Lastly, he decided to go back to sports. Finally capable of moving by his own power, he entered a championship for the disabled in which he played basketball.

2004-2005 ¥ The Mighty Thor
One day, after a particularly difficult game, Freddie wandered away from the court. What he found was one of the longest lines of cars, trucks, and motorcycles he'd ever seen. It took him quite some time, but he eventually he made his way to the front of the line. At it's face was a thong of dedicated men attempting to tug an item out of the ground. He reasoned it must be connected to a concrete pad or something to that effect, because not even the applied torque of a semi-truck would pluck it from its resting place.

When the truck driver was wrapping up and getting ready to leave, Freddy wheeled himself in there, despite the snickering and comments about him being in a wheelchair. Yet with the greatest of ease, he withdrew it from the ground. The gathered crowd could hardly take a breath; he'd done what was thought impossible.

Once he held it, his look of awe swept over the words engraved on its side. Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. Unsure what would happen, he saw the crowd rush him. During those same instances of observation, he felt his muscles harden and his body become stronger. Jittering at the same time out of fright, he spun around before attempting to wheel himself away from the approaching swarm. The hammer in his lap, he found strength to escape those embarrassed pursuers trailing him.

Finally making it back to the basketball court, he took a moment to gather his thoughts before setting the puzzling hammer on the ground. At that moment, his body was snatched away by a chain of lightning, in its place was the form of the old god Thor! Instantly noticing the blonde mane as it whipped in a wind, Freddy lurched out of his wheelchair before smacking against the pavement of the basketball court. Despite this, he felt no pain. Incredibly he could stand up without lamely slithering back to the chair. Freeman reached out for an explanation before he remembered what was now obvious to him.

He was the god Thor, whose body had been encased within the hammer Mjolnir to teach him humility after risking the lives of many Asgardians and displaying the most disgusting pride. Instead, he'd be taught an example by one who was worthy to use his power, getting a first-person perspective while he himself would be capable of saying nothing.

It mattered little now though. Picking up the hammer, Freeman took flight around the city. Having found no obvious wrongs to right, he made his way to a bar known for its quality and smooth taste. Here, upon hearing a man harassing a nurse named Jane Foster, he began a bar fight for her honor. As one would expect, Thor was the clear winner.

But a vengeful trickster god met the grudge-holding loser to make a deal. Crusher Creel would become the Absorbing Man. Waiting at the bar to ambush the thunderer, he called for a rematch before leveling the space. In the end, Thor won because of Freddy's determination and ingenuity. Claiming glass to be a weakness, he convinced Crusher to experiment against his better judgement before shattering across the wide scene of wreckage at the god's hand.

He would also be challenged by the psychic alien catterpillar Mr Mind who attacked vicariously through his society of monster henchman in an ongoing war. With sporadic attacks from Doctor Sivana probing the god for a weakness before he can overtake the tri-state area, Thor is kept busy to this day trying to keep Fawcett safe from the menagerie of monsters, mutant, and his mastermind stepbrother.

Mjolnir

A hammer forged within the heart of a dying star, it is made from Uru, a mystical metal belonging mostly to the Asgardians. If the hammer judges an individual worthy, he is granted the powers of Thor. In fact, the body and soul of the thunderer are sealed within the hammer so that whoever wields the weapon may take on Thor's body and soul while retaining his own heart and soul in control. In order to initiate the change, the user must stamp the top of the hammer against the ground.

Additionally, the hammer is nearly indestructible, making it useful for the deflection of weapons and projectiles. Making its use as a shield even easier is an enchantment allowing it to create fields. It can also create a gravitational pull, manipulate electro-magnetism, summon winds, and produce mystically charged blasts. In cases of dire need, it can resort to firing the concentrated life force of Thor himself.

Thor's Physiology

Thor is the strongest of the Asgardian gods, besting all baseline humans without contest. Also of note is his superhuman durability, resistance to 'magic', martial skill, bravery, and speed. When he applies himself, he displays superhuman hearing, smell, and sight. His crowning achievement is his trademark golden hair as it hangs from his head, looking fierce even though it reaches the length of his chin.

The Absorbing Man - Crusher Creel - Rogue

Crusher was a generally unlikable boxer who frequented bars in Fawcett City, Oklahoma. Despite having machine guns for arms, his easily exploitable weakness was his glass jaw. For this reason he was damned to eternal loserdom and could usually be found at the bottom of some dried up bottle chasing skirts. One particular instance of this resulted in him brawling a Norse god, after which he was humiliated and had to spend weeks in recovery. During the period he was healing, he was met by Loki, who offered him a potion to facilitate mutual vengeance. As a result he gained the ability to absorb other materials and replace his skin. He ambushed Thor before being deceived into literally gaining a glass jaw.

Asgard - Location

The home of the Asgardians located above Midgard and connected by the Bifrost. It is here where Odin reigns from the eponymous capitol city. It rests on a planetoid as a whole and has a great variety of shops and homes where the Asgardians rest and work, sometimes among other species.

Doctor Sivana - Character

A brilliant inventor intent on overtaking the tri-state area with one scheme after another. The short scientist packs a surprising punch and is phenomenally well educated, making progress in the realms of biological, chemical, mechanical, thermodynamic, chronological, and every other sort of engineering.

Fawcett City - Location

Fawcett City, Oklahoma is an American City that has long been exposed to the influences of magic. In fact, in Fawcett the age of the superhero never stopped thanks to a culturally divisive spell cast around the city's borders that protected it from the world's moral degeneration for a long while, having recently been broken. As a result the city resembles the 1950s in many ways despite having modern technology and media streamed to them. A staple of the local scene is WHIZ radio, contributed to by the youth generation. Passersby will generally be curtious, very few of the populace are ever rude, however an influx of rude and evil influences have tainted the area. It's only going downhill from here as best the police force can tell.

The Guardians of the Universe - Characters

The Asgardian relationship to the Oans is vague and distant. While their Lanterns intrude in spaces throughout the Cosmos and generally are prepared for danger, years of brief, violent encounters have convinced the authoritarian imps that entering without warning or invitation is a very bad idea. Despite this, the Guardians insist on investigating deicide whenever possible out of their totalitarian sense of justice.

Loki - Character

The stepbrother of Thor, fellow son of Odin, and secret traitor to the Asgardian people. It is his wish to rule Asgard and become a beloved king. Standing in his way has always been the thunderer, therefore one way or another Loki has been manipulating events to turn Thor away from his father's favor and away from the throne.

Mister Mind - Character

A telepathic alien worm from Venus, Mister Mind is a murderer who had slain many of his fellow people and intends to do the same to humanity so he will be free to consume the Earth one day. Aiming to remove the world's protectors, he has been using a society of monsters to probe for weaknesses, and one day he will exploit them until they are little more than slugs rolled in salt.

Olympus - Location

The home of the Greek Gods, parallel to Asgard and cannot easily be accessed directly from Asgard. In general the Asgardians have little reason to visit the place. But rivalry and seeking assistance has led to occasional visits.

Olympians - Characters

Odin primarily holds a distaste for Zeus, therefore any comradery or fraternizing is discouraged. Both groups of immortals have taken to no longer being worshipped by humans. Therefore each faction deals with their own affairs in general.

Shazam - Character

A wizard who trumps all others, Shazam is powerful enough to give cause for fear to any deity. Fortunately he generally stays at the rock of eternity. Despite pleas otherwise, the meddling old man has siphoned the strength of the Asgardians and forced them into scenarios they would have avoided entirely were they acting of their own will.

I wanted to approach Captain Marvel, but do it differently than either [@Andy C] or @Bounce. Rather than taking that perfectly respectable path, I made it possible to still play Captain Marvel without really touching that lore yet. Instead, I took his successor, and homed in on Marvel's Norse mythology. My inspiration is largely from what I've read of Freddy Freeman in the comics, Faust's introductory video to CMJ, The Multiversity's Thunderworld, and various animated/cinematic appearances of Thor. All in all, I intend to have humor, action, fantasy, sci-fi, and a hanging sense of adventure as Freddy tries to find himself.

@Morden Man I would like to play Kyle and take him in my 'new direction' as we've discussed, but I've been looking for stuff that's newer to me. Honestly, I'd prefer if I could play Kyle alongside Carol, but Kyle's my number two choice. So I'm in a tough spot here.
