I actually know of a few places with a network of machines like Waternaux City used to have, only replace their function of gravity regulation with maintaining the desired state of the planet. Pretty cool.

It's both brute-force-able and finesse what you want.
You can easily end up in a situation where you're stuck permanently terraforming and it never actually gets done. Or if it does, you have to support it forever.

Worst case, you do it slowly. Like aging a fine wine. Not that I drink. It wouldn't do anything to me anyway.
On some planets, you'll get a either a self-correction or feedback effect that makes terraforming infessible.
