Current You'd think after like 15 years I'd stop feeling like a fraud when writing posts but I still do which is both a statement on my self confidence and a compliment to how good my partners are as writers

Niles

Niles hated the lounges in these sorts of places even if he often used them to duck away and escape the public eye for an hour or so. The allure of the VIP lounge was lost as soon as you were allowed in. The appeal was always the mystery of what went on behind the velvet rope and the regular sorts who would never be allowed up did like to make up little stories. They were always so obscene in nature; at the seedier night clubs the VIP lounges always had the nasty rumor of being a place where wealthy and famous people went to...unwind in whatever fashion that meant. But Niles knew the truth. All the lounges were were places where the music wasn't loud, there were actually places to sit, and the snacks were complimentary.

He arrived before Zac did and took a seat in the black lounge chair, sinking into it - they WERE quite comfortable all things considered - and sighing. He couldn't...didn't understand why Zac had come to a place like this. Niles had meant it when he said Zac didn't belong here, in this world, in this club...though perhaps he was projecting the image he had of his former friend. Once a child in Niles' mind, always a child. Time had passed. Time changes things. People change along with time. But even as he saw Zac now grown up...he still didn't believe Zac had belonged here. Was it an act? It had to have been; the guy ordered a shot, there were two reasons to order a shot: to celebrate something or to get a quick jolt of liquid courage.

Niles doubted that Zac was here to celebrate anything.

When Zac made his way upstairs, Niles paid closer attention for any obvious tells. The eyes that stared back at him flashed back to the softer side that Niles was more familiar with, the awkward pauses in his speech, the scratching of his hair, the sudden backing down...Niles was right. Zac didn't want to be here. Zac wanted to leave and Niles couldn't exactly blame him.

"Well which is it?" Niles replied back, his voice not wavering in the slightest, "You're going to email me but you don't know my email address? You wanted to talk but now you don't? You haven't heard what I've been up to but you know I'm doing well? Stop that. There's nothing more annoying than someone who doesn't know what they want." Niles didn't seem to care that his words could very well come off as rude, he had adopted the same tone he would've used against a director of an episode who didn't know what lens to use or how to shoot a scene.

"You wanted to talk to me for some reason. So do it. Talk. Talk or walk, doesn't matter to me." One way or another, Niles wanted to get to the end of this trip down memory lane.

I did the thing
Nicolas

The trick to extending one's lunch period far beyond the scheduled time was actually quite simple. Never eat where people know where to look for you. Nicolas never ate lunch in his office or in the staff room because that would be the first places people looked for him once the slotted period was over and students needed a sympathetic ear for their supposed problems and concerns. It even managed to serve as a little adventure for Nicolas, a game of sorts. Where was he going to eat next? Maybe one day he'd pop into an empty classroom - if he could find one - maybe he'd pop into a club room. The school had several places where a potentially unprofessional educator could slink away for an hour or so. And on top of everything else, such things gave Nicolas great insight to how things were truly going on in the school. Oh how the walls talked when people assumed hallways were devoid of life...and how thin these walls truly were.

And today the walls were absolutely talking and for once it wasn't just students discussing their crushes or recapping the television show's they watched the night previous - and Nicolas always did wonder if the overly strict sort of staff members, names better unsaid, would freak out if they knew students were 'wasting time' with television rather than mathematical study - but today provided a different sort of conversation. And from what Nicolas could hear...it involved not students but adults who were surely on the verge of acting like them.

Nicolas' vantage point was behind them, in the class room opposite where Peter had been before Eric decided to make a power play. "Son of a bitch, that's my move," Nicolas muttered to himself when he watched Eric back Peter against the wall; except when Nicolas did it, the look on the lucky person's face wasn't panic or fear but rather exhilaration and longing. Even so, depending on the angle, the position Eric had Peter in looked enough like a secret meeting of passion that Nicolas was certain could cause a whole lot of assumptions if someone happened to walk by.

With a sigh as he slid the last of his rolled egg into his mouth, Nicolas slowly opened the door to the classroom he was squatting in. As much as he would've liked to see how this little encounter played out, he did technically have a job...and his position as guidance counselor extended to the staff as well - but the staff were usually much more level headed and full of common sense.

"So, what's going on here? Meeting of the minds? I thought math and science were like best friends forever, both being incredibly boring and full of numbers and formulas everyone forgets." Nicolas announced his presence as he approached the two from the side, placing his palm on Eric's shoulder as Nicolas came around to face the two of them. Nico was grinning as he spoke, at least someone was enjoying themselves.

"Anyway, maybe one of you could help me. See, I'm looking for a school but I seem to have gotten myself lost. I expect this kind of thing from the kids...and I know Petey here LOOKS like them, but he's not." Nicolas squeezed his grip tighter on Eric's shoulder, still grinning all the while. "Be the bigger man here, Eric, let the kid go." Nicolas' gaze turned to Pete now. "You keep saying things like that, egging someone on, and your face is going to be getting a bit more red. Trust me, Petey, I've been there. No need to kick a man when he's down."

Nicolas might have been grinning, but his words were anything but humorous. He might've been playful, but the situation demanded a serious response. "You two should take different routes during breaks. Oil and water just don't mix."
