Current You'd think after like 15 years I'd stop feeling like a fraud when writing posts but I still do which is both a statement on my self confidence and a compliment to how good my partners are as writers

Niles

There was initially one immediate thought when Zac sat down and Niles saw the watery formation in the corner of his former friend's eyes, and that thought came with a quick trip back in time, to numerous moments as a child when Niles was a bit of a dweeb playing at being cool like all the popular people on the television. In those days, how often did Niles see Zac with tears, and how often did it fall to Niles to repeat some seemingly profound line he had heard; empty platitudes that sounded cool and helpful. But every time it seemed to work, as far as Niles remembered. Every time Zac came to him crying, Niles was quick to turn the frown into a right-side up position.

And now, years later, how little things changed. Zac put on a brave face initially, but Niles was around people who were paid to put on brave faces. He could tell when someone was acting, when someone was uncomfortable, when someone was lying, not just to another person, but to themselves. And after a hard sigh and an internal question (Is this my fault?) Niles ran his index finger and thumb from opposite sides of his temple to the center.

Niles could not think of anything he wanted to do less than dig up what had long been buried: old wounds. Everyone had moved on. Except for Zac, clearly. Well, Niles had moved on. He wasn't in a band or the symphony orchestra, but he was cool, or at least played cool really well every Thursday night at prime time. The old days were over, and no amount of wishing or hoping would bring them back.

And yet, as he saw Zac cry, Niles couldn't help but to feel that deep rooted twinge of nostalgia. Once more it fell to him to make things right, to cheer up the little kid; only this time Niles doubted regurgitating someone else's dialog would do the trick. One night. One night. Tomorrow he had made planes with Chelsea to be her wingman on her ever present quest for passion...but she would understand. She might even invite herself along...but that's what clever little lies were for.

"One night," Niles finally spoke with another deep sigh, not wanting to reveal how much of a bad idea he thought this was, "That's it. One night. And I reserve the right to leave whenever I want." Niles had every intention of leaving an hour or so in, fulfilling the obligation of making an appearance. "Just tell me where, I'll figure the rest out."

Niles had a hunch that he would regret this. But old habits, or at least old memories, have a tendency to show up when you least expect.
Hey it's a thing
Nicolas

There were many things present in Eric's little retaliatory strike that Nicolas could take issue with, but the always cool counselor merely chuckled at the way the supposed professional teacher went from zero to aggravated in record time. The chip on the man's shoulder must've been immense, either that or he was dealing with the embarrassment from being called out on unprofessional antics. Nicolas was erring on the side of the latter if only because the idea of the perennial professional getting flustered over being caught was far too hilarious not to focus on.

Nicolas was not at all shy about hiding his amusement as a chuckling grin made its way across his lips. Oh, the buttons were being pushed and the only thought that entered the guidance counselor's head was how to push them even further. The first was simple enough; as Eric took a step back, Nicolas took a step forward, closing the distance the math professor had inexplicably put between them. And still the grin on his lips widened.

"Well that's quite the change of attitude, Eric," Nicolas spoke back, taking a few steps closer, "First you're damn near threatening poor Petey the next you're covering for him. I'm not fighting anyone's battles, I'm keeping a staff member from doing something threatening to his career. In fact, you should be thanking me." As if to prove his point, Nicolas again placed a hand on Eric, again on the shoulder. "From what I heard, little Petey won that little dispute of yours. Your mistake, Eric, was thinking I came to help Petey. I came to save you further humiliation."

Nicolas still had his hand on Eric's shoulder and still grinned like a jester. He was enjoying this, more so even than the lunch he had so looked forward to every workday.

"I'm not the one that needs to check anything, Eric. But just try and stop yourself from checking out how good my ass looks in these pants, alright." His little teasing over and done with, for now, anyway, Nicolas raised his hand to give Eric's cheek a playful pat before winking at him and starting to walk away, back to the harsh realities of work.

The Niles and Zac Power Hour will continue tomorrow, ya'll.

Skirtin' that line between unlikable and likable ain't easy but I like to think all my characters straddle that line
So is it my go and if so am I correctly assuming that Petey bounced the fuck outta that situation right quick?
Isn't that part of the fun of it all, especially given the theme? Not getting along with people is at the core of any good reality show
