Current 10+ years of an RP idea, finally finished, on 10.10.2025. Goodnight Raven Squad, you were the best, wildest, most silly near future SOF RP that lived on the guild, and you got a worthy send off :)

Bio

I've RP'd for the best part of over 15 years now here on the Guild, and particularly like military settings, both contemporary, past and near future. I have even dabbled in a little more experimental RPs, as well as created a plethora of 1x1s over my time in the guild. I like creating RPs with a distinct flavour- and often shift between narrative-led RPs to semi-randomised plots. I've been more a GM lately than a player, and don't really lean into fandom- instead, exploring my own universes lifting themes from other source material.

My main interests are military-themed, near-future RPs, with a focus on technology. But I'm beginning to push what that RP idea looks like- taking inspiration from lots of media and focussing on the fun, indulgent side of RP, whilst also exploring the lows and emotional side.

Raven Squad is a project over seven years in the making, and focusses on a class-based, eccentric yet half-grounded near future special forces team that acts as a response team where you can't send any special forces team in. It's incredibly dumb, incredibly loose, and yet, has delivered some of my favourite plot points in RPG. A brainless action flick a la John Wick and Kingsman meets a complex thriller with a fun left turn in it, Raven has been the culmination of over a decade of loving special forces RPG, gaming influences and other silliness in a package that has provided players with something quite different to a normal military themed RPG. While at an end, this is an RP that is a signature- it's silly as hell, takes itself barely seriously, and is what peak fun military RPG to me should be.

Delta Hyper is a love letter to Wipeout, F1's Drive to Survive (Netflix) and contemporary Formula One, with influences from solarpunk, cyberpunk, transhumanism and other posthumanist concepts. An RP that follows pilots in their ups and downs, it's a story that hasn't got me playing an actual character, but framing the camera at each pilot (played by others), and presenting it as if it were a documentary. Lifting elements from TTRPG, this is a Racing RPG like no other and no parallel exists- using dice rolls and randomisation, with a stats-driven system to generate race results, rather than actually RPing the races, players experience the fast-paced, dynamic world of anti-gravity racing. This means that come Qualifying and Race, the results are genuinely a surprise to everyone- and based on decisions made through dilemmas and decisions made between races. Friendships, rivalry, the glamour and even a little political undertone play out in 2094, in a colourful, utopian future that focuses on the fight to take first place.

Then there's Tactical Breach Wizards: Fireteam Hex. First use of any set IP as a formal setting, this is an RP that offers a darker mirror to Raven Squad, focussing on the other side of the equation- unlikely heroes in an uncomfortable position. I don't normally do fantasy, but the world, the lore, the feeling of the characters and the ability to write a comedy just was too difficult to pass up. An RP that focuses on a group running away from a variety of threats as wanted mercenary wizards in the middle of a post-revolution, Eastern-Europe adjacent 1990s to present Polavia.

Lastly, Dispatch: Heroes of Claremont. This is another IP-adjacent world, albeit drawing on a different setting and a new cast of superheroes. As my "first" proper superhero RP, this combines workplace comedy, a Storyteller-lite system and a fun, diverse, and large cast together in a dynamic, diverse setting.

I'm pretty flexible and try and get back to people on ideas and responses, but sometimes, I may become very busy and it will take some time till I am un-busy. I aim to clear posts within a week!

That's fine- we can help you out if needs be if a few things are a little rusty. You seem to have the core, I am not asking for a whole breadth and depth, but at least the willingness to vaguely pick it up.

I have almost finished Merlin, he's going to be the very upper limit of a character's badassery that I would make, and has one hell of a reputation that precedes him. I wrote it inspired by some real life events and operators (see the Gurkha who beheaded a dead Taliban leader to bring back "proof" that the target was dead...I can link), he is a figure of whom will have this aurora in the team, definitely being the kind of person who fits the bill when you need to co-ordinate a squad of operators with more than just commands alone, distinct from my previous character in Lima. I will say that Nikolaj will be a far more normal character, and probably something that will be more atypical of the squad. There are Jamie Lannister jokes to be had at his expense though (for many, many reasons that will be sort of seen, if not already from the CS), because there are plenty of happy coincidences that I let loose.
PMs sent to anyone who needs to get interviewed, I think.
Okay, Chaotic, I will PM YOU. You're going to get an interview, then you're going to get sent onto a fellow RPer who will interview you- it's a formality, I promise :)
@WilsonTurner

Hey friend, I'm not the one accepting characters or anything, but I did feel like pointing something out in your sheet; You have a marine that had graduated from West Point. . . Sorry man, the only place you're going after graduating West Point is the Army. If you still want him a marine, then have him attending the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Michigan, if not then he should be a soldier in the US Army. Just a little tidbit to make it look better, :)

Sorry, one more thing; if he graduated from a military academy, he would be a fully commissioned officer, and not a warrant officer.

Again, just tidbits I thought that would help your character look even better.

This echoed.

That said, I do not want to start accepting/declining. Everyone has good looking characters so far, and I'm actually quite happy with the way some of them look- so Wilson, I actually dig that character's look, it doesn't seem too far-fetched believe it or not- though it is the upper bound, but I will say that when you see Merlin, you'll see something a little more conventional

-------

Right, I've had so much shit to deal with, I can barely keep in control who is doing what (I didn't do a great job of illustrating who had opted for what either, this is a failing on my part). So, I'm going to update it as follows, and put who has what already. First come, first serve unless you are really desperate to take something, in which case you mail the person who took it.

And it's happening! It is seriously rudimentary- but the principles are there. I am going to iron out the squad roles. Even if they're not perfect, it's a case of grabbing what is there as I edit it now, then adapting what ideas have been already discussed and whatever you really want to throw into the table.

I will add a tech-sheet too, to give you an idea of what is at the team's disposal. I have been quiet on that front, but I will be adding pieces that you can expect to see.

Also, the interview process should be underway fully now- if you've been PM'd back by me, then you know that it's going to someone else, who SHOULD be getting in contact from the inner circle. Grim, you may need to wait on Silverwind a little- but he will get back to you, fingers crossed :)

Not going to lie, this is playing in my head while I'm interviewing all of you :D . Strangely. Eh, OOC will be up in an hour or so, with a CS sheet. A lot of work will be done to it, so do expect it to evolve.
I've RP'd for over five years, most of which have been spent GM'ing. Lima went on for three years, with many stops yes, but it has been a full circle- start to finish, with a plot, characters, people who have become close to myself in RPing history, and this is something that I would like to replicate- it is ambitious, but with ambition, you need the right people. I have a good idea of what makes an RP of this caliber tick, and I've read into your RPing work- to say the least, it's good, but it's not quite Carling. Queen has stated the point earlier on well, and I have the chance to choose who I want for this RP- so when first appearances suddenly come thick and thin like that, it doesn't help- even if you were the best RPer in the world, I wouldn't know, and that's why everyone else is getting interviews. I know you haven't made a character, it's not that which matters- it's the fact that I had one person, now two with greivences. I respect them because they're very long term RPing partners, so that is also a point I take to factor if I decide I do not like the look of something.

I asked you to really read WHO you're fighting as- operators within a squad, not pilots, nor someone driving a tank. I understand there is much to learn with an RP like this, but it pays to listen to the GM. This isn't a decision I undertook alone, neither, and even if your character doesn't exist, it was not that which pissed me off- it was the way you acted about it. Sorry buddy, but I would say that it's not paranoia if it is justified from past RPs. If you were interested in the concept, you'd have been like everyone else here- and realized what nature of RP and player is involved, which so far, they all do.
Right, I was away for a few hours.

Grim, and to anyone else that rolled up, there is an interview process- so even if you are late, I will be able to go through each of you and see who's in and who isn't.

Speaking of that process, I will be sending it to everyone probably now. I will PM each of you individually, and the OOC will go up soon enough too. The nature of said interview I do not want to disclose here- it is nothing more than a formality, and it is a clearance to make sure that when you tell me that you're in for the long run, you're not saying it just because you can. I do want to make clear, I am a very generous GM and if you're in, you're going to have an awesome time with committed, long-term roleplaying, but the process is there to prevent what you basically hate in other RPs, which is most likely people quitting mid-way through. It's probably going to be more of me getting to know you, if anything- so it's not something I would worry about, and hell, if everyone's really good I'll probably let it all slide if I find I have no reason to stop you :)

Dynamo, I hate to sound like a dickhead, but I think you may need to look at different RPs to this one if that is what you are proposing. You're coming across as someone who wouldn't last a minute in this RP (first impressions count massively, when I've stated the scale of an RP like this and you respond in the way you do)- I have told you prior to perhaps re-read what the style and look of this RP is, and if others want your spot, they will have it- so I have to say that I'm not really looking for your kind of character.
