Prologue

The continent of Xuanhuang is a land wrapped in blessings. The Six Mythical Beasts that raised this land from the ocean brought life from that which was nothing, and the beings they brought to life on it grew under their watchful gazes.
The phoenix bestowed upon the earth its down, from which the first flames sprung.
The dragon shed its scales unto the land, infusing qi into every being born from it from then on.
The tortoise, molding the land to shield these beings, created the mountains and caves where they could hide from the elements.
The tiger, seeing the fragile nature of these beings, gave them its left fang after teaching them the way of the weapon.
The kirin gifted the beings of the land with knowledge they would need to live and grow at peace, breaking off a single horn and carving onto it that which was necessary to live.
The xiezhi, at long last, gave not an 'item' but a 'concept': the order needed for peace and the chaos needed to avoid monotony.
Of course, though they could create the perfect 'land' on which to live and give the perfect 'gifts' to use, they could not create perfect 'life'. Those that lived on this land were prone to corruption, to wrongdoing, to evil, and to death; though not all were inclined towards such traits, what existed was enough.
And so, these beings lives, sometimes at peace, sometimes at war. The Beasts, growing tired of such matters, left to slumber in their own lands. Time passed, and these Beasts became naught but just a name, forgotten by the ones who prospered under them.

Or so the story goes, at least. This tale, known to every human across Xuanhuang, is simply that: a story, and nothing more. To those who lived upon the land, their knowledge was borne from their own hands. Though remnants of the Beasts' presence are claimed to still exist, they are regarded as naught but an old wives' tale, and so life continues on.

Or, at least, so it seems.

So... Contrary to what I've painted at first glance, this RP's actually going to be more Asian-fusion fantasy rather than primarily focusing on Chinese lore. A lot of the RP will be rooted in classic wuxia elements (I won't deny that), but there will also be heavy influence from other East Asian cultures (namely, Japanese, Korean, etc;) present in the RP... So feel free to make a character that falls into that sort of regional archetype, I guess.

This RP will also be enabling guns! Yes, thoseguns. I'm nerfing them, though! In a way, at least. More details on that below.

The Land of Xuanhuang

The continent of Xuanhuang is split into 6 "regions", each corresponding to one of the Beasts that are rumored to have created the land. As you can probably tell, the cultural influence of that myth is fairly high.

The Dragon's Domain is located to the east, and is filled to the brim with abnormal phenomena. Mountains seem to float in the air, water flows from out of nowhere and create majestic waterfalls, and, possibly the craziest part about it all: things are able to thrive in this environment.

The Tortoise's Rest is a large mountainous region located near the northern part of the continent and stretches through to the northwestern regions of the land before stopping. The mountains themselves seem to be perpetually covered in mist, but leave a majestic sight in the mornings when it parts.

The Phoenix's Roost is located to the south and stretches to the southwestern regions of the continent; it is a land filled with deserts, with oases dotting the lands every so often. Unlike in normal deserts, though, the sands remain heated regardless of the time of day.

The Tiger's Den rounds out the west, and it is absolutely covered in forests. Occasionally, valleys and streams cut through these lands, adding a bit of variety in what seems to be an otherwise unremarkable region.

The Kirin's Realm is located in the center of the land, directly to the east of the Tiger's Den. It is a slightly rocky region, though much less mountainous than the Tortoise's Rest, whose land seems to blend into the other's near-flawlessly. Being as it is, it has also become a center of trade for many regions, seeing as how it is difficult to grow or hunt things in the area.

The Xiezhai's Field is simply that: a large expanse of plains, with arable land and grass as far as the eye can see. The region stays as such year-round and, as such, is coveted by farmers from all over.

The town of Kizun, located in the center of the Dragon's Domain, is where the RP will begin. It is located on the ground (and not on one of those floating pieces of land like you might expect), but still has seldom contact with other towns, much less other regions. Traders are still welcome, though.

Qi, Combat, and Notable Professions

Qi is what drives a lot of things in this world. Naturally occurring within a person's body, one who has been sufficiently trained can manipulate this energy at their behest. How that is done, exactly, is based upon the person. Sometimes, it is used for combat; others, for production of goods. In rare cases, it can be used to heal wounds (though this talent is somewhat rare, that may only be because of the scarcity of people who are willing to take on such a task).

Guns, as stated earlier, do exist in this setting and have no explicit need to any sort of qi infusion. The guns themselves are fairly primitive by our standards, but they cannot easily pierce, say, a qi barrier used by a practitioner. The bullets themselves, however, can be infused with qi to increase their damage output. Most must be reloaded after a single shot.

In terms of more traditional combat, qi can be used to enhance the physical combat capabilities of a person, be it with their fists or even a weapon. Some are even able to channel raw qi into combat and fight with elemental powers, though this is much rarer simply for the sheer effort it takes and the necessary aptitude required for such abilities. More proficient fighters can infuse more qi into their attacks and/or defenses, altering the result thereof.

'Elemental' qi is based upon the concept of 'wu xing', and, as such, has five derivations: wood, metal, fire, water, and earth. Two other elements, aether (heaven) and dark, also exist. While the first fire are fairly self-explanatory, the other two are now. Aether attribute is usually oriented towards more healing, regeneration, and purification abilities; dark, on the other hand, is more suited towards corruption and destruction.
People can have a primary affinity for an element and a secondary affinity for another; however, a person may have only one more none, but never more than two. People with only one affinity also have the ability to output stronger attacks of that specific element.

For the purposes of this RP, dark chi cannot exist as a primary or secondary for any characters, simply because of its nature. Aether is fine, though.

Oh, right. Qi mastery also lets people fly. Just thought I'd put that out there. Of course, flight is only for those who have advanced mastery. Even a newbie can glide, though.

On the topic of profession: two of the most notable professions that exist in this world are alchemists and adventurers. Alchemists use qi, along with various other materials and items, in order to create medicines of various effects. Compared to normal medicine makers, the rare materials used combined with the qi of the alchemist enables the end result to have a larger amount of effects and a higher potency due to a lack of imperfections. Adventurers, on the other hand, hunt down rare flora and fauna that the alchemists can use in their own curatives along with handling any issues that people may have. As expected, they work in a guild-esque system to accomplish their goals.

So, without further ado, here's a form!
(By the way, every PC will be a human. Won't say the same about NPCs.)

As this is an interest check, this RP is still open to any suggestions to changes and such. If you've got any questions, please, go ahead and ask.
Tiral watched in silence as the rest of the knights took action, moving off to apprehend the culprit as the barrier went up. The 'arrest', though, ended a lot less chaotically than he had expected; after all, with the assassin having just given up and collapsed on the floor... Well, there wasn't any particular reason to knock out the panicking nobles anymore, now was there?

The ice mage's expression turned to one of mild disapproval as the context of the situation came to light... Or so it seemed. Though the possibility of blackmail and coercion was there, the instant conclusion that the other knights seemed to jump to (namely, the innocence of the assassin herself) wasn't anything that he came to. He'd refrain from making any concrete objections for the moment, at least, but until everything came to light, he would at least remain wary. That was the plan, at least.

"Ah... Well, seems like my research will have to wait..." he sighed, shaking his head in disappointment. "An attempt on the princess' life, a mission to try and smoke out the culprits in the making, and guard duty for whoever's left... There seem to be a lot more important things now, aren't there?"

Musing to himself a few more moments, Tiral realized that he was still in the company of the Court Mage and bowed his head.

"My apologies for that; I have a tendency to verbalize my thoughts on occasion. In any case... I'd assume you'll be having a little bit more to do in just a short while, what with the incident just now and all that. Though... Having some more knowledge on wards and the like might be appreciated for the coming battle. If it isn't too much of a hassle, may I borrow any notes on anti-magic wards and the like? Though I would prefer a more in-depth study, time seems to be of the essence as of right now..."
And so I have.

I gave the day, at least, so don't fault me on that front. =3=;;
Masaru let out a sigh as he heard the report. Well, that was really a bit of a shame; at the very least, someplace that looked as it was stable enough and easy to clear out would've been fine. But... Nothing? Really?

"Ah... Damn, that's a bit of a shame, then. But hey, complaining about it's gonna get us nowhere; let's start moving now, then, I guess. As long as we remember our way back, there shouldn't be any issues, right? I mean, we got fish here, after all," he said, shrugging as he began to move further inland. Though... Right, this was still gonna end up a port or something if the chance came up. Making it close enough to the beach to make it easily accessible, while also making it deep enough inland to sustain crops and avoid any possible floods or whatever...

It was honestly more difficult than he'd thought it would have been. The job would've probably been simpler had the ship not been wrecked like it was now, but...

Well, it was still too early to complain. For now, the priority was going deeper in.
...
And maybe a source of fresh water. That'd be nice. Real nice.

The trees along the coast of the beach had long since left them, and now all Masaru could make out were deciduous trees left and right. At least, that's what they seemed to be; they certainly weren't the palm trees that had dotted the very outskirts of the border between the sand and the soil. But hey, if anything, the change was nice enough. Even if the trees were actually rather unfamiliar, at least they seemed to be slightly less prone to falling over. Even if he hadn't a clue on how to build a house... Wood was a good place to start, right?

"Ah... This place fine for now? My arms are starting to get a bit tired from carrying all this stuff around, y'know?" he asked whoever had decided to follow, placing the goods down near the trunk of a tree.
"Guilder's modified scrying spell, huh...? That one actually didn't enter my thoughts when I was examining my resources last night," Tiral responded, nodding his head thoughtfully. "I'll have to see if I can't access a copy from--"

The young mage's response was cut off abruptly as the sound of an arrow whizzing by and lodging itself somewhere in the crowded hall, to which he responded with a hurried glance around the area. While a few of the Iron Roses (who had apparently been bickering until a few moments ago, if their earlier shouting was anything to go by) immediately sprung into action, Tiral was left attempting to identify who the hell the would-be assassin was. With the cries of panicked nobles becoming increasingly louder, Tiral took a deep breath and turned towards the Court mage, a solemn look on his face.

"This might be a bit sudden, but can you cast any mass-sleep spells on the nobles? They might end up getting caught in the crossfire if they keep running around like headless chickens, after all. I'll block off the windows, but since I have nowhere near your level of prowess, I'll have to request you handle the main entrances. This is all I can do without putting anyone else at risk; my apologies."

Before he could allow a response, Tiral deftly tossed his dagger into the air and caught it by the hilt as he began to chant. Improvised chanting was always something of a strong suit for him, at least... Hopefully that sort of thing wouldn't screw up this time.

"O goddess Mayon, under thine own divine vigil:
Let not our enemies escape, nor may they enter. Defend our bodies and souls from eternal sleep, to which we may continue to serve.
For the nation of our kin, and of our kin's kin;
Seal off this land, and remain until that danger has been warded off!"

With a frown, Tiral glanced at the windows at he pointed at each in succession with his dagger, quickly covering each with a thick layer of ice. A thin layer of mist could be seen emanating from it all, alluding to how cold the material was at this given moment.

At the very least, the assassin probably wouldn't be able to dive out of a window if it came down to it. Frost like that wasn't something people broke through all that easily...
Tiral looked at the Court Mage with a look of bewilderment when she said that he could "do better." What he had said earlier had already implied as much... Didn't it? Compared to the spells that he had seen most magicians use, those of his own composition were usuqlly shorter and consumed a bit less, anyhow. Granted, the bigger spells were a bit messier (the frozen log popping back into the mage's mind now), but he had to amplify the scale of the base spell on that occasion, so that was... Somewhat justifiable?

"I cannot exactly command from the backline if I'm told to lead an offensive, though. Casting magic, commanding troops, and dealing with direct combat... I am only human, after all. If I attempted all 3 at once, I run the risk of making a fatal error. The lives of those at my side are more important, after all."

The vagueness of the Court Mage's words weren't exactly the most helpful pieces of advice he could ask for, but... They were concenient enough to let him segue into questions of his own. After all, if there was nothing left to be asked, then it was probably okay to get some actual advice instead of empty words.

"Though... Erm... Sorry to ask, but do you have any notes on anti-electricity wards applicable to people or on any sort of clairvoyance spells that can look over a large battlefield? The former is a tad less important at the moment, but the latter would be greatly appreciated for future campaigns."
"A-ah... Right, the possibility of that sort of thing never even crossed my mind. Apologies. Er... Right, my mana pool, was it? I believe that during the last evaluation, I was placed at... 450 Magil? At least, I believe that was the unit they had dictated... The system went into place a year or so ago, correct?" Tiral responded, casting a glance off to the side. "I can't recall what the old men who had set it up had set as a baseline, though..."

Sighing, Tiral shook his head before turning back to face the Court Mage. There were other questions that she would have, correct? Though assumptions had caused a few more problems than he'd have like, it was probably safe to assume that there were still things that she wanted to know. Better safe than sorry, at least.

Well, once that was over and assuming that there was still time left to ask, maybe he could get some insight for his current project. It might speed things up, at the very least...
Oh crap, I've done it now.

Tiral took immediate notice of the shift in tone of the Court Mage and cursed inwardly at himself. He had just told her to be at ease, after all, and now... This...
Gods, why did it have to turn out like this?!

"A-ah... No, sorry, I shouldn't request such information before you complete your own inquiries. Your own job is many times more important than my own, so please, do go ahead and ask first. After all... Not to jump to assumptions, but you didn't seem all that comfortable looking for me. I'm more surprised by the fact that you actively sought me out during such an event, in all honesty; would it not have been more efficient to request for information during a less raucous event?"

Realizing the weight his words carried a few moments later, Tiral hastily waved his hands and shook his head, as if to ward off whatever assumptions he had just put forth.

"T-that isn't to say that you might not have had multiple things to handle and that I just so happened to be here! E-erm... Regardless, Miss Ravenwood, please, do ask as you wish first. I'm not so callous so as to impose on you any will of mine without having first given something of my own."
Tiral flinched as he heard an unfamiliar voice call out his name. It'd have been one thing if it was just another one of the Iron Rose Knights, but this voice... No, this one was thoroughly unfamiliar. While it would have been unfair to have jumped to any conclusions, the fact that whoever had singled him out probably had good reason to. He wasn't any sort of notable among the knights, and it was that exact reason why nobody else had seemed to notice his presence.

"...Ah? T-the Court Mage?"

All the woman had needed to say was that, and every muscle in the mage's body tensed up. Why would one of the most important magicians in the kingdom seek him out? Had he touched upon some subjects that had been frowned on?
...
No, that couldn't have been it. After all, all he had done was manipulate water and ice for combat.

Was that it, then? Just using water and ice meant nothing in the long run; just having a similar affinity to the nation's patron goddess meant nothing. NOTHING. Just a coincidence.
Nothing more.

"Oh, uh... Right, my apologies. You are correct, Miss Ravenwood; I am Sir Tiral Yevan of the Iron Rose Knights. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," he fumbled, hastily bowing in response. His worries had almost caused a major misstep of his own. Even if the Court Magician seemed to be a bit more embarrassed by the ordeal... Or, well, he assumed it to be embarrassment. She did seem to be stuttering a bit much than he'd have expected from someone so deeply intertwined with the royal family.

As soon as he heard the Court Mage request information on how he used his magic in the midst of his duties, though, Tiral's ears perked up and his tense muscles relaxed a bit.

So it wasn't any trouble, then? Phew...

Standing up straight and nodding, the ice mage let out a small, relieved sigh and thought for a moment about how to respond. It was a topic that he hadn't expected, after all...

"Please, though, do be at ease. In regards to your question, though..." he trailed off, glancing downwards with his right hand stroking his chin. "Using magic in the midst of combat is a bit of a strange ordeal. Unlike many of the more traditional mages who are allowed to chant complex incantations in the rearguard of an army and fire at will, I'm forced to truncate many of the spells that I have and make them up on the fly. In the end, the stability of the magic as a whole is slightly compromised, but the flexibility increases tenfold. The use of a special catalyst also becomes a necessity for a great amount of my spells because of this; in most cases, it ends up being this dagger here."

With a steady hand, Tiral drew his dagger from his side and presented it to the Court Mage to let her examine its quality.

"Regardless of how good or bad it may be as a catalyst, this dagger is surprisingly useful for emergency situations. It's not as sturdy as a standard dagger, though, so I prefer refraining from using it in actual combat unless it is a life at stake and I am unable to create an incantation quick enough."

The young man's gaze panned downwards as he explained the usage of his precious dagger, but after realizing that the Court mage's chest was rather... Outstanding, turned his head off to the side, his face a slight shade of red from the embarrassment of his own.

"M-my apologies. I-in any case... Is there anything in particular you wanted information on? I'd be happy to provide whatever is necessary if that is the case. I have a few questions of my own for my own research, so if it isn't too much of a hassle, I'd like to humbly request if you could also answer a few own my own selfish questions, Miss Ravenwood."
I dunno about you guys, but something about that Court Mage stands out.

Two things, actually. =3=;;
