If you are a fan of Warhammer 40,000 or Age of Sigmar, let me know. Maybe we can put together an RP. I play Ironjawz & Kruleboyz in AOS and Salamanders & Drukhari in 40K.

Bio
I am a veteran of the United States Army and the US Army National Guard. I spent three years on Active Duty serving in the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Ft. Carson, CO, and the 3rd Armor Division at Kirch Göns, West Germany. I spent 18 years in the Army National Guard with the 26th Infantry Division "Yankee" and 29th Infantry Division (Light), "The Blue and the Gray". I was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina with the 29th ID (L) in 2001 - 2002. I have also been reading military history articles and books since I was 10 years old. I do prefer Military Role Plays over all other genres, primarily because I have a vast knowledge of the subject including personal experiences. At the very least, my characters are always veterans.
I have been writing for pleasure for at least 35+ years but only got into forum-based Role Playing about eighteen years ago. I do enjoy Nation Role Plays and get into minute detail when designing my military. The only reason I enjoy excruciating detail in my militaries is because for me, it is fun. My education and experience on this subject afford me the insight to see the depth of the structure. It is not just a General and a large pile of soldiers. If someone wants assistance in designing an army, navy, or air force, please send me a PM. I will help. Please specify what level (echelon) or depth you would like me to go. When I say echelon, I mean Army, Corps, Division, Brigade/Regiment, Battalion/Squadron, Company/Troop/Battery, Platoon, and Squad/Section.
When I was a student in High School, I used to play Dungeons & Dragons. Recently, I have been DMing a 5e campaign of my creation for my son and his friends. 5e is so much less cumbersome than earlier editions of D&D. I do have an interest in Tolkien-esque fantasy-styled Role Plays as well. Time travel has always been a fun genre for me, but to do it well, one must have a firm grasp of historical facts.
There are only a few fanfictions I will participate in; Star Wars and Star Trek are two of them. I want to do an exclusively Klingon RP one of these days. I also avoid Canon characters.
I have real-world martial arts experience. I would love to write an RP about hand-to-hand combat, no fantasy magic chit, just hands elbows, knees, and feet. Maybe the occasional head butt thrown in to mix things up. I trained in Krav Maga for six and a half years. I earned a first-degree black belt in Krav Maga on 3 June 2017.
Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art form that employs practical self-defense techniques drawing forms & techniques from Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwando. It is very brutal, demanding, and aggressive. During the seven years I trained, I have bruised two ribs, sustained several muscle pulls, and various lacerations and bruises over my body. I have received a sprained ankle and a fractured wrist. Before the first black belt test, I received a bone bruise to my right shin; where my roundhouse kicks impact. Yet, I am stupid enough to continue training. [Regardless of the physical pain, it is more fun than any other physical activity I have engaged in. Fortunately, the bone bruise healed up prior to the third and final test. EDIT: I did leave the sport over five years ago. :(]
Over two years ago I completed my first novel, a science fiction set in the 24th century. It focuses on a Private Military Corporation solely employed by the earth government. I started a second book in November 2022 and hope to work on that this summer when I have more time.
Send me a PM for a Role Play or if you would like to see what sort of an army I could build for you.

History
What Brings You To Role Player Guild: There is a large community of writers here. I enjoy the hobby even though I rarely get time to participate. Currently, I try to limit my stories to one at a time. Unfortunately, I rarely find one I enjoy and others are willing to write in. When I do, they die way too early. Life Before You Came To Role Player Guild: It was very different. I don’t know how to explain it in just a few words or sentences. Life Since You Came To Role Player Guild: This is just a side hobby. I have many irons in the fire and this is just one of them. It has taken a back seat to my real life activities.

Quotes or Sayings: “Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them.” – Winston Churchill paraphrasing George Santayana. “If you’re going to fight, fight like the third monkey on the ramp to Noah’s ark and brother…It’s starting to rain.” Theme Song: Warrior’s Call Advice To The World: Forgive the actions of those who came before us. Behaviors we consider heinous crimes today were generally accepted practices many years ago. Anything Else:
Excellent post, Goldmarble, capturing the physically exhausting nature of Infantry, driving on regardless. There is an expression in the Infantry when it is raining. "Rain, you gotta love it." The point of the expression is this, if you don't "Love it," you will be miserable so you might as well love it because you really don't have a choice. The same goes with the physical activity of running up and down hills. You either do it, or you die. So, you might as well love it. :D
In all fairness, We need to make it rain in this RP. Tactically, rain favors the attack. They say Rain is Infantry weather. Maybe because of the expression above or maybe because the sound of the rain hitting leaves and the ground masks the sounds of rounds entering rifle chambers, coughing, sneezing and all those other expected noises you wish you could stop making but can't.

Okay, but before you include these posts, we're to assume that it's "business as usual" on the barracks? Or would the PACT forces be secretly deploying along the border? I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to work out where I start :)
Yea, the way I played it out was my unit was preparing to go to Able Archer. It had not happened yet. So essentially, the unit was prepped and ready to go to the field; meaning they didn't have a lot of vehicles down for maintenance. Everything was squared away and ready to go.
The unit had not yet departed for Able Archer when the balloon went up. The unit was alerted and then went to their General Deployment Positions.
As far as the actions of the WARSAW Pact, it would go something like this... 1. No, there is no sneaky movement to the border. Any movement at all would be detected by someone and NATO would be on alert. 2. To move one vehicle, capable of 50MPH over a stretch of road is much simpler than moving a few hundred capable of those speeds over the same distance of road. Generally, armies set a convoy speed designed to keep the vehicles together. The worst thing you can do is rush your units into the fray at top speed. Someone will have problems. There will be breaks in contact and you would end up sending your units in against the enemy piecemeal. Convoy speed for tracked vehicles on hardball road is 25MPH (40 KPH) and for wheeled vehicles is 50MPH (80KpH) on Autobahns and 30MPH (48KpH) in built up areas. Since your tracked vehicles are leading the convoys, they determine your rate of march. 3. Once WARSAW units reach the 1K zone, the separation between east and west, they will encounter NATO Reconnaissance and Cavalry units patrolling the border. In the US VII Corps sector (Bavaria) that would be the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR). In the US V Corps Sector (Central/Fulda Gap area) that would be the 2nd ACR. In the Northern Army Group Region where we are fighting, this would be the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers (UK) with elements of The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) attached. 4. The Queen's Royal Lancers (UK) would operate in Squadron-sized formations in an attempt to slow down the the WARSAW Pact Nations. They would use Indirect Fire and Close Air Support (CAS) to attrit enemy forces in the Dutch I Corps sector. NOTE: A British "Squadron" equals in size to an American Cavalry Troop (14 - 17 vehicles). Cavalry units have their own inherent Artillery which is very responsive. They would also use Attack Helicopters to help attrit the enemy. 5. By 1983 standards, The Queen's Royal Lancers, US 2nd ACR and US 11th ACR would have been able to slow down the WARSAW Pact in order to provide Dutch I Corps, US V Corps and US VII Corps 48 - 72 hours to dig in and prepare a defense.
You would not have seen a "Surprise Attack" by either side during this time period. Tensions were high, everyone was on edge and both sides were expecting an attack by the other side at any moment.
Able Archer was a Training exercise in which some units play the Opposing Forces (OPFOR) and some units play the friendly forces (BLUFOR). This scenario has the units about to go out and "fight" the training OP, but it is pre-empted by an actual attack by WARSAW Pact forces.
The training exercises were fought int he German countryside. They were not fought on a training base. I kind of missed that point the last time. They actually fight in the streets and fields where civilians can be found. Most civilians are sick of this and would love nothing more than to restrict NATO training exercises to training bases, which comes to fruition with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
If you recall, when we started the last time, I did it as if they hadn't actually deployed into the field. I wrote it as if the unit was still in garrison. The units were notified by the chain of command from Army to Corps to Division to Brigade to Battalion to Company. Then everyone rolled out to their General Deployment Positions (GDP) where they were issued live rounds and subsequently moved to their fighting positions.
I sure hope I didn't kill the thread. :( That would make me sad :( Not my intention. I believe Rare asked me about the FSB either because he was honestly curious about the unit or he already knew and wan't to call me out. ;)
Come on guys, let's keep this going. Otherwise Dutchbag and I will just have to do a 1x1 WARSAW v NATO RP. Kind of like that Battle of Stalingrad one.
0515 hours 20. September 1942 Grenadier Regiment 522 in all of its splendor stood up just under nine hundred soldiers of Der Deutsches Wehrmacht. Oberst Manfred Böhmer entered the Russian steppes with a strength of three thousand one hundred and seventy four personnel. After a summer of slogging their way to the banks of the Volga River, the regiment, one of three Grenadier Regiments within the 297th Division, two thirds of the Regiment were either bleeding in a hospital in the fatherland or buried in the soil where they lay.
It was in many ways disheartening. For Oberst Böhmer loved his men dearly and the act of fighting a war was the act of killing that which one loves.
Almost half of the men of this Regiment were rear echelon soldiers or manning the assigned artillery battery within the regiment. For immediate use in Direct Support (DS) artillery, the regiment had six 105 mm leichte Feldhaubitze (leFH -- trans: light field howitzer). The guns were located in a gun position about four kilometers west of where the regiment gathered inside the city.
The regiment, tasked with taking the factory near the banks of the river against a Soviet enemy bound and determined to defend their home were pouring across the river in droves and reinforcing their defenses on an hourly basis. German Luftwaffe pounded the boats, but more Russians were slipping through than the flyers could stop. German Artillery pounded the shores to prevent the survivors from making it into the city, but even still, more were getting past this obstacle than being killed by the lethal explosions.
The sun would be up in less than an hour. It was time to go. The companies were lead by Major von Küchen on the left and Major Klieter on the right. Behind each company were two additional companies lead by Hauptmann Bauer on the left and Leutnant Ziegler on the right. Each advanced company established a support by fire position on the second floor of their jump off buildings. These SBFs consisted of eight MG34 Machine guns and three 50mm mortars. The mortars were positioned on the roof and shielded by whatever structures remained. The flanks of their assault force were protected by survivors of a Penal battalion on the regiment's right flank and the remnants of Bewährungsbataillone 391 on their left flank. To support the assault, two Sturmgeschütz III assault guns or StuG IIIs would advance along both flanks to provide additional fire support into the objective buildings and to prevent the enemy from reinforcing the targeted structures from the flanks. Along the center road which the 522nd Grenadier Regiment straddled, two more STuG IIIs would advance with three Panzer Mark IIIs in order to advance with the assault force.
At zero five fifteen hours, the artillery battery commenced firing. Their first volley was High Explosive (HE) with a variable time (VT) fuze setting. The VT was set to detonate after passing through at least one layer of concrete, brick or wood. The purpose was to kill any occupants inside of a building rather exploding outside the building with a point detonated fuze that explodes on contact. The second volley of rounds was composed of White Phosphorus (WP) which would explode on contact, point detonated. During the explosion, much of the chemical would expand and burn at a rapid rate. If contact with the flesh was made, it would burn quickly and aggressively. The only way to extinguish this fire would be to dig it out of one's flesh with a bayonet or knife. Its intended purpose was as a smoke screen. When allowed to burn and expand, a large billowing white cloud that would conceal the movements of anyone inside the cloud. The battery fired four additional volleys alternating between HE and WP. The problem is, the rounds all landed either on top of the factory or in the street just east of the factory. None of these rounds landed on the street in front of the 522nd Grenadiers or the Russian troops they would be facing during the impending assault to be launched in the next ninety seconds.
Concurrently with the impacting High Explosive and White Phosphorus rounds, sixteen MG34 Machine guns positioned on the second and third floors along the west side of the street forming the Line of Departure (LD) all opened up adding to the din of battle. Along with this, the StuG IIIs and Mark IIIs moved up and began firing HE and machine gun rounds into the objective buildings. The 50mm mortars on the roof also dropped a combination of HE and WP rounds which landed on the Russian side of the street designated as the LD for the assault.
Grenadier Adolf Bergmann lay in a cellar hole waiting for the command to move. He thought of his mother and father near Vilseck and his Jewish Grandmother he never knew. He neglected to inform anyone that he was a quarter Jewish. He believed it was in his best interest to keep that little bit of information a secret. But given the current situation, he knew it really didn't matter anymore. He knew in his heart that he was not going to make it home for Christmas -- ever.
Oberleutnant Klaus Bergen held the extreme left of the line. Confidence filled his heart as he chose to remain an inspiration to his men. He checked on them frequently, moving from position to position issuing words of encouragement. Klaus was positive he would not only survive, but see the factory on the other side of the street fall into friendly hands.
Feldwebel Johann Harmann had already received the Iron Cross Second Class and was really not in the mood to try for the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. His head pounded, his nose was stuffed up and body aches wracked him completely. But in Stalingrad, it was either fight or die. There was no rest, even if you did have a bad case of inluenza.
Major Günter von Küchen stood in a doorway watching the building across the street. It was at least an eighty meter jaunt to get to the factory. This would be the sprint of their life. It wasn't that he didn't believe his men were up to the run or the hand-to-hand fighting that would ensue on the far side. He knew his men would do well, but getting there was what troubled them. The Russians constantly reinforced their position with troops emerging out of the banks of the Volga. There would be no way the 522nd Grenadiers could push the Russians out. These doubts the Major kept to himself. He told his troops they would all meet success and he encouraged them nonetheless. He looked them in the eye, shook their hands warmly wishing them well all the while knowing he was sending them to their death. But alas, Major von Küchen would be crossing the street with them.
At exactly zero five sixteen and thirty seconds, Oberst Böhmer blew on his whistle. Major von Küchen and Major Klieter both blew on their whistles as well. The shrill ear piercing sound propelled the first wave of Grenadiers, two companies numbering around two hundred soldiers jumping up from their positions and sprinting the eighty meters across the street. Russian made machine guns, fixed along diagonal firing angles forming interlocking fields of fire opened up creating a buzz saw of hell as the German Grenadiers charged right into the maws of death. Several of the Russian machine gun positions had been eliminated by indirect fire from the mortars and by the machine guns upstairs. These gaps provides the 522nd with a few isolated regions to establish footholds in the factory.
Once they were inside, it was almost as if every man was fighting for his own life. The Russians came at them with bayonets fixed on theor Mosin Nagant bolt action rifles and a few carried the same PPsh Submachine guns that all the leadership in the 522nd had converted to months ago.
Major von Küchen fired several bursts of 9mm slugs into a crowd of Russians inside the factory, scattering several and sending a few to the floor. Oberleutnant Bergen, pushed his troops forward to clear out rooms in and spaces inside the factory. It was an intricate labyrinth of places for marksmen to hide. Too many in one place. Feldwebel Harmann made it to the far side and flopped on the floor behind members of the second platoon. His head was buzzing from the noise and pain. It was an almost unendurable experience he was forced to tolerate. He struggled to regain his composure. Grenadier Bergmann lay bleeding to death in the street with a half dozen of his comrades. They would not see Siberia in this lifetime. Nor would Adolf Bergmann ever see a Vilseck Christmas again.
Once the first two companies had established footholds at the west end of the factory and adjacent building complex, the 2nd wave of companies commanded by Hauptmann Bauer and Leutnant Ziegler blew their whistles and the remaining two companies of the 522nd charged across the road. They encountered some of the same machine gun fire as the first two companies, but continued into the cauldron unabated.
The German Grenadiers of the 297th Division and the Russian soldiers fighting for their homeland and the city named for their leader were gripped in a hand to hand struggle for life or death. Many would never leave this hellish place.
I skimmed over the IC, reading the highlights. It appears the Germans made two assaults on the factory and then things quieted down. I'm renewing the assault at Beginning Morning Nautical Twilight (BMNT) on 20 Sep 42. BMNT is roughly 45 minutes before sunrise. For this time of year, it would be about 5:15

That's disgusting! Have you ever chewed on a used a cigarette? When I was in the army, we used to play pool a lot in the day room. There would be coke cans filled with cigarette butts and in some cases used as a spittoon. I've taken a sip off the wrong can before. It is not an experience you would intentionally seek.

--Gunther (AKA: Old School)

Gunther [+]

Character Summary

Name: Gunther
Aliases: Landain
Age: old (I was around when George Washington was a Lieutenant)
Birthday: August 12
Ethnicity: French, English, & Seneca (Iroquois Confederation)
Location: New England
Gender: Male
Higher Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science & Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice
Occupation: Substitute School Teacher
Languages: English, Spanish, German & a little French
Years RPing: 18
Preferred RP Section: Advanced or Casual
RP Level: Advanced
Dedication Level: Moderate
Biggest RP Pet Peeve: People who do not communicate with the group and drop.
