Foreign Legion - First Contact is First Contract

Brian Park was not surprised when they were informed, they were heading to a distant planet. He was curious of the name, Saina and knowing this bit of information actually pleased him. He really did not want to go to Africa. He’d already been there. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. Although he didn’t expect a trip to some distant world to be exactly pleasant, it had to be a hundred times better than Africa.

Park was given a squad in Team Bravo, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, (Task Force Cox). The Battalion Task Force was named for its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Frances Cox, a Welsh officer who served as a Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer in 3 Paras. He commanded an armoured infantry troop in 1 Royal Welsh Infantry and later served as the battalion’s quartermaster. After receiving special air service training, Alexander Cox served as Operations Officer in 22 SAS and later as its Executive Officer once promoted to Major. Alex Cox’ final unit of assignment was as the Division Operations Officer for the Scottish, Welsh and Irish Division which coincided with his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.

Park inventoried his squad. He found their organization to be loose and informal, which suited his special operations mindset well. Most of his soldiers had served in an elite formation which helped with cohesion and professionalism of the squad. Dieter Vogel served in the German Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK), leaving at the rank of Feldwebel. Vogel served as Park’s number two. Vogel stood 6’1” with very short dark hair and steel gray eyes. He was a very serious soldier. Jeremiah Edwards served as Sergeant in the US Marine Special Operations in one of the Raider Battalions. Jeremiah came from Southern California and was more laid back and relaxed than your typical jarhead; currently serving as machine gunner for the squad. Jake Robson was an SAS trooper from Northeast England; Tyne and Wear. Robson may have served with the Battalion Commander, LTC Cox who saw action in some of the same units. Undoubtedly, when Cox was a Major in Operations for 22 SAS, it was at the same time Robson was with the teams. Preston Simmons was a US Marine Scout Sniper who served with the SAS sniper as riflemen. Their marksmanship skills were unparalleled, probably even to Sergeant Park’s who was an accomplished sniper as well. Diego Velez served with the 1st Ranger Battalion before leaving and finding work with a Private Military Corporation. Frans Madsen served with the Royal Danish Jaeger Corps. His experiences were quite similar to the British SAS or US Navy SEALs. Velez and Madsen served as the squad’s grenadiers. Robert Browne, hails from Providence, RI and served with the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. The ninth and final member of the squad was a Canadian named Guy Fournier from the Montreal suburb of Boucherville. Corporal Fournier served with JTF2 and the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) as a Combat Medic. He served a dual role in the squad as medic and as anti-armor specialist.

With the onset of alien invaders coming down on the squad and the entire motorized infantry brigade of humans currently defending the Grathik owned Talra station, Park’s squad was assigned an overwatch mission. They traded in their light machine guns for heavy .50 caliber machine guns. Fournier, Velez and Madsen would assist Edwards and Browne in keeping their oversized “pigs” fed. When they weren’t using their own weapons to try to shoot down the drones buzzing in their battalion’s Area of Operations (AO), they were assisting the machine gunners by providing them with ammunition and loading the guns when necessary. The large German was given primary responsibility for the two machine guns and their crews. Sergeant Park covered down with the snipers and communications with the Platoon Leader.

The squad was positioned on the roof of a multi-story building fortified with sandbags. Two M2 Browning Heavy barrel .50 caliber machine guns and assorted rifles oriented along a primary avenue of approach. Several hostile drones descended into the battalions AO, obviously intending to gather information on the friendly forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Alex Cox, Battalion Commander for Task Force Cox designated his B Company as the battalion’s main effort with three rifle platoons and one armor platoon. A Company provided flank security with two platoons. Third Platoon A Company was attached to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Armor. Team Bravo, C Company and Team Delta each had an engineer platoon attached for breaching obstacles as necessary. A Company covered the right flank while C Company covered the left. Third platoon, C Company performed the role of Task Force Reserve. Park’s 2nd Platoon was taking lead with Park and his squad covering their movement. A squad from 1st platoon was performing a similar mission on an adjacent high speed avenue of approach. The entire battalion was spread out with three battalions abreast and two battalions following in support. They intended to establish contact with the enemy and eliminate their ability to gain information on who they were and what they were doing.

“We need to take out their eyes. We cannot let them learn anything about us. Let them know we are bunch of bad ass mother fuckers who should not be fucked with. If you see any enemy drones, exercise extreme prejudice. Turn the fuckers into piles of broken metal upon this station’s soil.” Sergeant Park was ready to throw down. He held up his HK416 carbine and peered through the scope. He found an unfamiliar looking drone and squeezed off a round. Then he picked up the handset to report to higher. He felt it was necessary to put the first round down range in order to lead by example that the squad should be engaging the drones in their forward sixty degree field of view.

“BUTTERFIELD, BUTTERFIELD, this is RIDDLER, over,” Brian park called over his radio.

Lieutenant Jacob Butterfield hadn’t chosen a very creative callsign, using his own surname. “RIDDLER, this is BUTTERFIELD, go ahead over!”

“BUTTERFIELD, this is RIDDLER, we have established contact with at least fifteen drones. They are approximately 500 meters from your point team. Request Alpha Delta Alpha assistance, if available, over.”

“Roger that, fifteen drones in our Alpha Oscar. Pushing Alpha Delta Alpha request up the net, out.”

The Lieutenant clicked off as the squad continued to engage drones. Brian pulled out his binoculars and scanned the sky over Task Force Cox’ AO. He counted eighteen drones on this last view, fearing there could be more. Dropping the binos, he picked up his rifle and re-engaged drones. “Come on Robson! Let’s see how many of these fuckers you can drop!”

The Combat Zone

Jimmy Graham

James Graham, age 35 is a Sergeant-Detective with Boston Police Department working out of District C6 in South Boston. Jimmy Graham joined the BPD after a four-year stint in the US Navy. He served as Boatswain's Mate aboard the USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, leaving the military in 2005 as a Petty Officer Second Class. On 7 October 2001, John Paul Jones launched the first Tomahawk missiles into Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was Jimmy's one and only deployment away from American waters during his time in the Navy.

In 2005, at the age of 22, Jimmy Graham hired on with the Boston Police Department as a patrolman. His father was still working in BPD Headquarters at the time. Jimmy worked in more than a few precincts, returning to South Boston (C6) in in 2015 as a Detective Sergeant. He has investigated a variety of crimes including vice, narcotics, guns and gangs, auto theft, larcenies and several homicide investigations.

Jimmy grew up in Dedham just south of Boston along Route 1. His father was a 35-year veteran police officer in Boston. It was a foregone conclusion that Jimmy would follow in his old man's footsteps and join BPD. He did.

Detective Graham enjoyed the flavor of a fine tobacco for many years. He smoked cigarettes from age 15 until age 30. Even in the Navy, he smoked. This addiction caused some health issues including a chronic cough, high blood pressure, and an undiagnosed case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD makes it hard to breathe, causing the chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms. Jimmy's father died when he was 58 from Lung Cancer. The father never had a chance to collect a pension. He was still working the job. Jimmy's mother collects his father's pension. After his death, Jimmy finally woke up and stopped smoking. Although, it might be too late for him.

Detective Jimmy Graham married Diane (Savoy) when he was 26 years old. His father was alive to see his son married and to see his grandson, Leo born a year later. Diane worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital before she was pregnant. The young couple used day care to help raise their son, relying on both incomes to get them by. When Jimmy was 30, Diane had a second child, a daughter, Adelaide who was born with Cerebral Palsy and confined to a wheel chair the rest of her life. The couple were reluctant to try to get pregnant again but did so when Jimmy was 34 years old. Diane again gave birth to a healthy girl this time named Charlene. In 2018, Leo is 8, Adelaide is 5 and Charlene is 1 year old.

Although Jimmy is devoted to his family, he feels it is important for him to do the best job possible at work in order to provide a decent income for his family. The fact that his wife earns a higher income in the hospital is a reality he does not want to face. He ignores this issue. He and his wife have had several arguments about his health problems. Jimmy denies they exist and does not believe he has a problem. He refuses to see a doctor about the cough and shortness of breath. It may kill him one day.

The Combat Zone

Gabe Meaghan

Gabriel Meaghan was born at Boston City Hospital and grew up in South Boston to Daniel Meaghan, a mechanic at Logan International Airport and Janet (Sullivan) Meaghan. Life was hard for the Meaghan family of Boston, but not because they didn't have the means to survive. Dan Meaghan worked hard for his money and frequently worked overtime shifts at the airport. When he was home, he was drunk. There were frequent beatings for young Gabe and his older sister, Fname.

When Gabe was 10 years old, he lost his mother to alcohol poisoning. The woman was always a wreck from being beat by her abusive husband. The only escape for her from the pain was the bottle which ultimately killed her. Dan Meaghan felt no desire to remarry, continued to work and provide for his children. He often boasted about his accomplishments, working a full-time job and raising a son and daughter. But he could not watch them.

By age 13 Gabe and his sister, aged 15 were hanging out with other teens getting into mischief anyway they could. They vandalized private property, shoplifted and smoked weed. At age 15, Gabe was arrested on a drug possession charge, but there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the case and it was thrown out of court.

Later that year, Gabe found a stray dog. He took the dog down by the docks and played with it. He tied the dog to a post and threw rocks at the animal. This made him laugh. Whenever the dog would yelp in pain from a rock pelting his face or torso, it would merely elicit another burst of pleasure from Gabe. He found a rock that was shaped like a four-inch knife. He picked up the rock, approached the dog who he started calling Lucky. He thrust the rock into the dog's side. The dog naturally tried to bite Gabe. That only made the teen angry. He then picked up a small boulder. He grasped the boulder firmly in his hand and repeatedly smashed it into the dog's head. The skull cracked with the first impact. Successive blows flattened the skull, smashing the dog's brain inside. The experience gave Gabe an immense feeling of exhilaration. He was initially fearful of these feelings. He knew they were socially wrong, but for some reason they were also pleasurable. He would have to try hunting some day. The perversion of killing the dog helped him to deal with his abusive father and the loss of his mother. It really changed him.

At age 19, Gabe joined the Army after completing High School in 2013. There was a war going on in the Middle East, which the United States Army was heavily involved with. Secretly, he considered what opportunities that would present for him. Gabe was not concerned about a career. He figured he could always go work for the Airport if he had to, but here was a greater opportunity he could not pass up. He never forgot the dog down by the docks and was curious what more he could do with that desire. He joined the Infantry and received his Basic Combat training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He didn't care for the authority, resented it in fact, but tolerated it, in order to get what he wanted. He also earned the Parachutist badge and a Ranger Tab which ushered the young Bostonian into

By 2014, Gabe Meaghan was assigned as an Infantryman in 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment and by the end of the year, found himself in southwest Afghanistan assisting Afghani soldiers in Counter Terrorist activities. Max took to the army like a square peg in a round hole. He quickly learned to adapt to the changing situation and learned teamwork. There were a few fellow soldiers whom he took to and they stayed together through it all. They were a tight band of brothers.

During this deployment to Afghanistan, Private First Class Meaghan had several opportunities to use his M4 Carbine on mounted and dismounted patrols. In November 2015, first platoon, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment were on a dismounted patrol with Afghani army soldiers. They encountered a large group of over two hundred Taliban soldiers. The two forces engaged in a firefight that lasted five days.

PFC Meaghan was always on the front line and focused on shooting Taliban soldiers. During the engagement, Gabe Meaghan fought in hand to hand fighting with no fewer than three Taliban fighters. Two he killed with a bayonet and a third he strangled with his bare hands. Gabe himself, lost the pinky finger of his left hand and the top of his left ear was torn away by an AK-47 bullet. For his effort, Gabe Meaghan was recommended for the Silver Star with “V” for Valor, America’s third highest award for valor in the face of the enemy and the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained while in combat.

Privately, Gabe Meaghan was pumped. The entire engagement was exhilarating. The adrenaline was flowing, and he thoroughly enjoyed every minute, from plunging the first bayonet into the first Tali to the wrapping, his hands around the third soldier's neck and watching the life slip out of his body. He could smell these men. They stunk bad just like he and is comrades. These were warriors. Hearing the dead men's dying breath slip from their lips filled Max with such euphoria. It would take at least three days for him to come down from this high. The excitement was incredible. The fact that five of his brothers in arms were killed in action was totally lost on PFC Gabe Meaghan went without notice.

That single event in 2015 was a catalyst for Gabe Meaghan. He needed to feel it again. He wanted it badly. He volunteered for patrols and sought firefights with zeal. His behavior did not go unnoticed by his superiors. Gabe was described as a quiet reticent young man who socialized only with a small group or kept to himself. He focused on exercise to keep himself in shape and work.

Finally, in December 2015, the Third Ranger Battalion returned home to Fort Benning. Within the next year, Gabe was promoted to Specialist and then discharged honorably. In 2016, Max returned to Sorel to find his father died a year earlier and no one notified him. This alone was reason to celebrate. He linked up with his sister, Fname and they got totally hammered.

Gabe Meaghan, 23 years of age, stands 6’ 2” tall and weighs 198 Lbs. with short brown hair, steel gray eyes and a mustache that extends past his mouth straight down on both sides stopping at his jawline. He wears his side burns extended two inches past his ear canals. He typically wears sweat pants, running shoes, T-shirts and matching zip up hooded sweatshirt. He normally wears a Boston Red Sox baseball cap.

The Combat Zone

There are four primary characters in this story.

Allison and Gabriel Meaghan grew up in South Boston to an abusive father. Their mother drank herself to death when her children needed her most. They lived on the streets of Boston getting into trouble with gangs, drugs and street violence. Detectives Jenna Michaelson and Jimmy Graham are trying to fight crime in The Hub while stumbling over government and police corruption. The pair do not know who has their back and feel they cannot trust other officers on the job. They don't know who is on the take and who is honest.

The Combat Zone

This is a 1x1 Roleplay about a crime drama that takes place in Boston, Massachusetts. We have resurrected a two-block region of hte city south of Chinatown formerly known as "The Combat Zone". It was a haven for crime and immoral behavior. Corruption on the Boston Police Department allowed it to continue. The real combat zone was removed in the 1980s following the tragic death of Andrew P. Puopolo, a Harvard University student and football player as well as pressure from the citizens and rising property values.

The Combat Zone encompassed a portion of Washington St. just south of Chinatown, Boylston Street, Lagrange Street, Beach Street, Stuart Street, from Harrison Avenue to Tremont Street.

For our Roleplay the Combat Zone remains and is a den of crime including pornographic book stores, strip clubs, night clubs, theaters with risque` performers. It is a dangerous place. The Police turn a blind eye or take bribe to walk away. Prostitution is the biggest crime in The Combat Zone. You can also find any drug in the world that meets your desires. Beware, it is not the world of pleasure and comfort you seek.

I've created battle groups that include both infantry and armor with combat engineer and artillery support. The ADA units will be spread throughout the brigade sector to provide a more wide reaching support. Included where each unit commander hails from.

Yes sir! The 335th attack aviation battalion (UCAV) is a battalion of Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles that perform precisely in the manner you just detailed. Originally, I considered them as human controlled, but they can operate under AI parameters. They would still have either human or Grathik handlers insuring they are operating properly, correct?

...Our F45 can have lasers mounted on it instead of projectile firing weapons as well as missiles and/or bombs. But I would still want indirect fire weapons like mortars and field artillery.

The Battalion has three Companies. Each company has three rifle platoons with three squads each. This is nine squads for the Company and/or nine platoons for the battalion.There are four 81mm Mortars at battalion to support the platoons in the field and three 60mm mortars at company to support the squads in the field. The Anti-armor teams at Battalion are probably 90mm or 106mm recoilless Rifles mounted on M151 Jeeps. The Anti-armor weapons at Company are probably Light Anti-Armor Weapons (LAAW) with teams who carry several of them. These teams are attached to the rifle platoons for their use and may consist of four men carrying a bunch of LAAWs.
