@Scarifar ...okay...? i'm sorry to hear that. i guess thanks for actually telling us??
'what's the deeeeal with airplane food dragonriders??'

sorry, not trying to make fun of you, but now i'm imagining a stand up comedy routine solely about dragons.

@Gisk to actually answer your question, though, you're right, there's no actual telepathy. a dragon does not think in complete sentences to its rider. however, they do project strong emotions, and the longer a pair have been bonded, the more specific those feelings are. for instance, because anara and inirath have been bonded for so long, she receives a broadcast consisting of 'excited' and 'expectant' and translates that into a feeling of 'this is going to be fun'; or 'disgruntled', 'haughty', and 'resigned' and translate to 'i don't WANT to do this because it's beneath me, but i'll do it anyway.'

in the reverse, a rider can coordinate their dragon's movements by thinking 'fly' or 'run forward', usually by clearly picturing the action. in the same way as vice versa, the longer a pair is bonded the faster and more accurately a dragon responds to their rider's commands.

hopefully that makes MORE sense, not less...
alright: @Avanhelsing, @Guilty Spark, @RedDusk, and @Gisk, this is your last chance to get on board with the group before it gets quite a bit harder to catch up. hope you can still join us!
Anara's fingers obsessively checked and rechecked the buckles and knots on the riding straps, smoothing down the many leather bags strapped to Inirath's massive haunches. As the biggest of the dragons on this journey, she'd be carrying the most, and although the silver beast grumbled over being used as a beast of burden, the grinding noise of her claws restlessly kneading the ground filled the cave. Inirath had fed well and was just as ready to go and do something as her rider.

"Alright," Keltor eventually said decisively. "Enough." Inirath stilled immediately and helpfully crooked a leg into a kind of ramp, allowing Anara to quickly vault her way to the thunder dragon's shoulder. She settled in between two ridges, clipping a few safety straps to her belt, and good thing too—with barely a split second of warning, Inirath charged from a standing start for the cavern's opening onto the mountainside.

They broke into the cold dawn air—to Anara's mind, more bracing than any caffeine. Inirath waited until the last possible moment to snap her wings open, and even the stoic Sergeant couldn't quite keep the grin from her face as they soared parallel to the rising sun. If it had been even an hour later, their passing would have made quite the stir—people tended to look up when a shadow that big passed by. Today, though, hardly anyone was even awake. It made for a welcome change.

Ambrell Ridge loomed ahead of them, nowhere near the side of Draketooth Mountain but still an impressive sight. Inirath banked around the dusty spines, startling a dozing whiptail as they flew overhead. They bypassed the Ridge itself and headed for one of the foothills, one with a convenient view of the sea in the direction they'd be heading. With a quick command, Inirath backwinged to land on the sandy rock with enough force to send a shudder through the ground.

"Stop showing off," Anara muttered, but got only a haughty look in response. Sighing to herself, she nudged Inirath with her toes until the dragon maneuvered so she could see all the assembled riders.

"Good to see that no one changed their minds," she called, not bothering with any formalities. They knew how important—and how dangerous—this was. She wouldn't patronize them. "It's a straight shot from here to the first stop. Ten hours of flying. If your dragon gets tired, let them swim for a bit instead. I trust you'll respect your dragon's wishes if not mine."

Tightening her grip on the straps, she stood in the stirrups, twisting to survey the horizon with a hand held to shade her gaze from the sun.

"If no one has any last words...let's get in the air. Caerel doesn't have time to waste."
alright, so, still waiting on @Avanhelsing, @RedDusk, @Guilty Spark, and @Gisk, but since guilty hasn't posted at all yet and it's only three against seven who HAVE posted, i'll go ahead and move us along tomorrow morning.
hm...interesting question. i'd like to keep things fairly simple, though, so i'm going to say there's no (successful) interbreeding.

@Archmage MC if it was feasible, yes, but there's now seven characters that need to catch up. i'll wait a little longer and do my best to keep this going :/
@Mictlan93 with the revised bonding age, it looks good! also, in general for bonding, the process is pretty much instant. it might take a few days to develop the full mental link, and years and years to be able to read your dragon's moods accurately and consistently, but the actual bond develops within moments

@Hael always! i'd love to see a character sheet :)

@WriterRaven oh, god, finally another female. thank you. thank you so much. also, she looks kickass, glad to have you!
@Mictlan93 go for it! btw fancy seeing you around here, welcome welcome
@WriterRaven excellent! if you want to pop in late, either you can ask someone to catch you up or, for the sake of expediency, you've been informed one way or another.

as far as language, i'd say there's a universal trade language, but each island has its own native tongue—caerel's first language is the trade tongue, but there's an older native language that's widely regarded as archaic and only useful for historians. native languages on other islands are usually called the same as the island—for instance, qiandri people speak qian, and kullathi speak kulla.
