Hmm, I'm not aware of any mini-updates before the main one, certainly haven't sent any war orders yet.
Really happy that this RP has gotten so big, esp. after Kaiserreich didn't kick off.

Golden Age of Piracy: Caribbean 1655 (OOC)

Guys, I want you to know that I'm totally fine with you guys making NPC's and RPing with them - a rich man stuck in Tortuga trying to get somewhere and willing to pay a pretty penny, a leader of some underground guild offering money for the head of some traitor, a merchant wanting to sabotage rivals asking you to loot a certain ship, a poor man wanting revenge and willing to sell even himself to you if you can secure it for him, whatever, I don't mind. You could quite easily build yourself up without interacting with any other player for a while, and then when you do meet, there could be some interesting stuff going on :P just don't be shy, go all out. In fact, if you want me to set you some kind of mission because you're not able to or something, just tell me, though I really want this to be a non-GM dependent RP so that if I suddenly disappear or am too busy things don't just freeze up (also, if I do disappear for a bit, feel free to control NPC characters to advance the story)

“We’re heading to the tavern, if you’d like to come with us. The dock isn’t a fine place to talk in this weather, after all.” Upon closer inspection of the speaker, Bill was rather surprised to find it was a woman, and the way she spoke suggested, beyond a doubt, that she was the captain. Or if she wasn’t, then she was certainly a senior member of the crew by the way the others were acting around her.

“Aye, I agree, nothing better than a nice bit of ale, a warm fire and good company in this kind of weather. Would gladly join ya, and perhaps we could even discuss potential…business…for this rum you’ve…uh…earned.” Bill turned as the crew began heading out, he glanced back at the lady and flashed a friendly smile, “name’s Bill by the way, and what’s this fine lady’s name if I may be so brave as to as- ” before he finished his sentence, a rather large group of men appeared before them, stampeding off to wherever they were headed.

“Into the tavern to avoid the storm!” one of them shouted, before running head first into one of the crew members Bill had just become acquainted with.

“Hey you! Watch it!” he growled. The crew member was helped up quickly, but the other seemed rather dazed. Inspecting him more closely, Bill’s eagle eyes fixed the man’s appearance to memory. A tall man, about six foot, with short, obsidian black hair which barely reached his eyes – which were a rather shocking green. He had a well-trimmed moustache, and his pot belly did not seem to take away from the apparent strength in his arms. A few of the men who had been running with him stopped and we calling out to him.

“Cap’n Angelo, y’alright? That man givin’ ya trouble?” Bill ignored them and extended a hand to help him up.

“Angelo, eh? And a captain too? You must be headed to the tavern too, right? Right where we’re off to, might as well join us methinks.” Helping the man up, Bill turned back to the others and they continued their brisk walk through the rain.

“Yeah, so as I was sayin’, what shall I be callin’ you b- ” once more, before he finished his sentence, Bill stopped abruptly. Having reached the door of the tavern, he was surprised to find himself face to face with William – or Will as he preferred to be known. And he had what was clearly a prostitute over his shoulder – he could just about see the red hair of what was undoubtedly Lucy, Will’s most recent ‘eternal love’. And he looked half drunk.

“Will? What are you doing?” upon hearing Bill’s voice, Will immediately perked up, all drunkenness left him and what one could have, perhaps, mistaken for fear lit up in his eyes.
“Uh, nothin’, just, uh…helpin’ out this lady…she…fell down…” Bill raised an eyebrow, he was clearly not falling for it. He’d told the imbecile to wait quietly for his return, and now he’d made a ruckus.

“Put ‘er down you blundering buffoon! And give ‘er somethin’ for the trouble you’ve caused.” shaking his head, Bill walked past the tall man and into the tavern.

Outside, as the others walked in, Will put Lucy down reluctantly.
“Uh…Bill said I should give ya somethin’…do you reckon a kiss is fine?” he grinned mischievously at the redhead, his recently cleaned, brilliant yellow teeth – and one decaying to the right – showing in all their glory.

The Ottoman Empire has ever been welcoming and tolerant of all its subjects and peoples. All Ottomans, no matter their creed, ethnicity or sex, are treated with the respect and dignity they so deserve by the state. Today, as a democracy, all peoples from across the Empire are represented in the General Assembly, and all peoples of all the vilayet elect a vali to best administer each vilayet, meeting the needs of the diverse peoples who inhabit our good nation, all different, but all, undeniably, Ottoman.

Thus it pains us greatly to see nations whose one reason for going to war is greed and an incomprehensibly evil, godless disposition, using the excuse of religion to wage war against us. Not only do they insult us by suggesting we oppress the People of the Book who are to us as brothers and the dearest of compatriots, but they add further pain to this by speaking of our religion of Islam in a way which is utterly reprehensible.

You may insult our navy and our military prowess with taunts, your taunts shall not conquer our lands and defeat our mighty soldiers – mighty with God in their hearts and at their backs – but by insulting the monotheistic faith of Islam you not only insult the Ottoman Empire, you insult the hundreds of millions of Muslims across the world, and the Ottoman Empire, as the recognise Caliphate, cannot allow our faith to be thus slighted.

In response to this clear and open hostility, not just towards the Ottoman Empire, but towards the religion of Islam as a whole, the Ottoman Empire hereby fully mobilises all its forces and declares a Jihad against the tyrannical Empire of the Rus, the arrogant Prussians, the cowardly Kingdom of the Netherlands, the ever-treacherous Kingdom of Greece and the villainous Italians. May Allah, in his glory and might, strengthen the hearts and arms of the believers, and ever-aid our allies Austria and the United Principalities, who are true People of the Book and most deserving of our friendship, loyalty, and blood.

We call upon Muslims everywhere to rise up to defend Muslims and Islam, we call upon the Ummah to unite against all who would seek to destroy it and slur our faith.

It is our duty, as Ottomans who love this land, it is our duty, who call this nation home, it is our duty, as Jews who fear God and wish to see his justice and his truth everywhere, to stand steadfast by our nation, to fight for our nation, and proudly, gladly, die for our nation and the future of our people.

For centuries the Jews of Europe have been persecuted and killed for no other reason than being Jewish. For centuries we have found that our only refuge from those who would slaughter us has been in the lands of Islam. The day the rule of Islam is weakened in these lands, that is the day that all Jews who are safe here will be engulfed by the demons who in Europe wait.

The Ottoman Empire is our nation and protector, our homeland and upkeeper of truth, and we Ottomans do firmly stand by it, and will do so to the very end.

A letter from Ecumenical Patriarch Joachim II of Constantinople to all Christians in the Empire, published in the same newspaper:

For centuries we have dwelled here. Here, where glorious Rome once ruled, we dwelled, in the Ottoman Empire. Over my life I have heard much talk of a need for Christians to liberate themselves from the oppression of the Muslim Caliphate and establish our own nations and states which can best serve us. I have always been of the opinion that doing so would be catastrophic, and I have always called for patience: for we have lived with our Muslim brethren for centuries, we have flourished here as much, if not more so, than Christians everywhere.

But there is a difference. Because here we have a voice, and here we have rights, and here we have democracy! Rule for the people, by the people, by the permission and blessing of God almighty. Today, we choose our vali, and he serves us and endeavours to create for us the life we wish to lead. One feels great sorrow to think that our brethren in Greece were so quick to declare independence and are today no freer than they were before they gained sovereignty. We, however, are free. No more do autocrats rule over us and dictate to us what we are and what we must be, we choose what we are!

Russia tells us we are oppressed! We reject their attempts to tell us what we are. Greece wants to create a nation for Greeks, no doubt to oppress us under the autocratic rule of another king, we reject their attempts to enslave us. Here, we are free, and for this freedom we shall fight, and for this freedom we shall die if need be.

Ottoman Sultans over the ages have attempted to tell us we are Ottoman, and we rejected that too, we would not be forced! But today, they have created for us a nation to take pride in, a nation which defends justice and truth in the world just as it takes steps to uphold that same justice in the Empire. And it makes me say this: I am an Ottoman, I am a Christian Ottoman, and proudly so! This nation, my Christian brothers, is yours, God has answered our prayers and given us the freedom we all sought after, so who of you would not fight to defend the blessings which the Lord has rained upon him?

Our Christian brothers in Belgium have suffered greatly and have been humiliated, our hearts grieve for their losses, and our blood is hot with anger and fury at those who sow chaos and discord. I am glad that our Christian brothers in Romania and the Austrian Empire have seen reason and fight against the powers of Satan with all their power. To Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, upon you, your people and all who side with you my blessings. May God strengthen your heart and clear your mind and guide you in your divine mission to enlighten the sheep who stray from the flock. My prayers are with you, and may your victory be swift and mighty.

We do not believe a response to the false accusations of Prussia and the Netherlands are necessary, they have proven themselves to be war-mongers with their conquest of Belgium, and a war-monger does not change.

We would like to inform the Netherlands and Prussia that Sultan Abdulmecid, may God rest his soul, has been in his grave for almost a year now. It does not come as a surprise to us and to all civilised, peace loving people that they would claim that even the dead are scheming against them.

The democratic Ottoman Empire, having been given little choice, hereby declares a state of open hostilities with the Kingdom of Prussia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, calling upon our allies the Austrian Empire and the United Principalities to support us in warding off the might of the Satanic Armies.

The Ottoman Empire proudly declares that the ridiculous treaty revealed by the Netherlands, which was presented at the Conference of Berlin, was our response to their equally ludicrous proposition, the tyranny of which was unveiled by the Austrian Empire. Our delegate states that he was ‘so busy laughing at Prussia’s demands that I felt obliged to return the favour.’

We do not hide the fact that we wrote it, and we do not hide the fact that we treat it with as much disdain and humour now as when we presented it to the Prussians and their puppets. We hope it will bring as much laughter to the world as it brought to us who wrote it.
