Well, here's what I'll do:
Option 1: Have me edit my post.
Option 2: Both of you reply, and THEN I'll post again and find the damn thing.
Option 3: You take very limited control of Rurik and have him detect it in YOUR(Rune or Mystech) post. (basically, say something like "Rurik would hear, blah blah blah and pointed blah blah/so-and-so noticed his head turn and look blah.")
Also I still want Rurik to have the first crack at the thing. Don't worry, I won't do anything huge... but I have a scene in my head I REALLY want to write...

I was tempted to reveal the wyvern myself in my post... but I wasn't sure that's what we wanted to have happen yet. I can always go back and edit it to have him detect the wyvern if you prefer though.
Rurik looked at the footprint they'd found. It was quite large. Talons like that could easily disembowel all of them in one slash. Well, he doubted they'd be lining up, so that wasn't too big of a concern, but still... Their prey probably saw them as such, and was much larger. Their only real advantage was their magic and numbers.
He pondered Verin's question for a bit. He wasn't entirely sure, a wyvern was much different from a wolf or bear.
"We have to consider all the facts. According to Alex, they're smart, so it will probably be coming up with some sort of plan. Because you ran from it, Verin, it's going to assume it is stronger than you. To it, you're prey. It's going to assume that we're all prey. However, the fact that you tried to attack it, and then came back with more means it might also assume that we're not defenseless, so it won't just sit around. If it knows we're here, then it probably wants us to follow it. It expects us to track it, so I assume it's leading us to where it will feel more comfortable fighting back when it is ready to confront us. Also, if it is smart, it won't just wait... it'll ambush," Rurik finished ominously. "The only thing is, if we don't know where it plans to wait, we don't know when to expect the ambush, so we'll have to always expect an ambush."
In that case, he was their best bet of not getting caught off guard.
"Predator Magic, Sense. Ears." His voice was little more than a whisper, but a moment later, even a whisper wouldn't escape his hearing. If the wyvern got close, the smallest twig snapping, or a breath taken too loudly would alert him.

Well it's still early, and I haven't been hyper-analyzing him, so "in-depth" right now isn't much more. That was my nice way of saying "I'm too lazy to type anymore," lol.
Buuuut, since you asked, I suppose I can say what I think makes him cool. Mostly it's just I like what he symbolizes to the guild. He's the powerful and reliable one, sort of the one you can trust to "save the day" if all the other (our characters) mages can't quite step up. The personality you gave him is why I can say "reliable" and "trust" because he's too nice to sit by and do nothing. He actually cares about the guild, unlike someone like Laxus early in the manga.
He's older, smarter, and "chill" without being indifferent. He's lively without being over the top, which would kill any sense of maturity you'd expect in an older character. He's got all the qualities needed to fit his role, be likable and interesting, and yet not seem like three personalities haphazardly rolled into one.

Also, I'd just like to say that I apologize if my last post was kinda boring. I honestly didn't expect them to mock him THAT hard. I really couldn't think of a good way to have him handle that. All the good responses I thought of didn't really fit with the personality I gave him. lol
