No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

"No. More curious." Rebekah answered simply, though as they arrived at the stage, it occurred to her that her response had been a little terse. Elaboration couldn't hurt, in a situation like this. So as she flipped the Ace between her fingers she paused for a breath, and expanded upon her thoughts a little. "I don't have a metric for how my abilities stack up, but I'm not worried about where I place. Even if it turns out my abilities were abysmal, it wouldn't change my goals."

"Seeing other people's abilities teaches me more about how other people use magic, and how I can refine my own skills. And I will still be refining and learning whether I'm in the bottom ten percent or the top."
Don't worry about it at all, man. Real life takes precedence, and I can understand that things get turbulent.
yooooooo i'm in

as i already said
Shuffle. Draw. Shuffle. Draw. Shuffle. Draw.

Ace of Spades. In her little microcosm of the world, that constituted a good sign. An encouraging one, actually, though she didn't really need it. The teacher had barely finished giving his instructions before she had tucked her cards into the pocket of her uniform and begun moving. The thought of a testing ground excited her. A chance to see what all the other magician students could do. And show what she could do, but that was a lot less interesting. Unsurprisingly, the other magician that had gathered near the exit was headed in the same direction.

Odd decorations on his uniform made him impossible to miss, and certainly something of an oddity. But he was the only other magician she'd seen so far, aside from the teacher. Even if she didn't feel like talking to him personally, having enough of a working relationship to be able to ask about his magic would be helpful. After a moment's more thought, she decided on a simple greeting.

"Morning."

Day 1
Justin and Otto

"Then I should have no trouble keeping up with my own clients." Justin commented, following Otto's suggestions as to how he loaded his plate. Lots of bacon, a waffle, scrambled eggs... Emphasis on the protein, mostly, though given how much syrup and butter he put on the waffle that probably wasn't for health reasons. An apple, a donut, and a glass of orange juice joined the assemblage of breakfast items balanced carefully on a tray. he did not miss the opportunity to refill his coffee mug, either, as he passed by the machine on his way to find a seat. "But I'll be interested to see how this place operates."

The universe had ironic timing, too. A subtle indicator in the corner of his vision prompted him to take a closer look at his notifications. Confirmation that the thief he had been hired to catch had been processed by the police, and his payment was already being wired to his bank account. He dismissed it with a tap on the device's frame, and then took the glasses off and tucked them into his chest pocket. That meant one more case crossed off his list. The other was still pending, but he doubted for long. He'd have to seek out some new clients soon enough. he took another long sip from his mug, and a few bites of food, before looking at his compatriot again.

"So what do you generally do, Otto? Have to keep busy somehow, if things aren't exciting here."
Theeeeeere we are. Caught up to speed, and character introduced.

Now to catch up in three or four other games
Thus ended the standard start-of-year speech. The details varied from school to school, but the point of such assemblies was the same. Inspirational pep talk, important information, then split up to start the day. A song and dance repeated across the world, be it in English, Japanese, or any other language. Splitting up into magicians and espers was different, Rebekah had to admit. There weren't many schools where the deciding factor for peer groups was "are you a magician" or "are you an esper", and even fewer where either one could be true. Only one, that she knew of. Her answer was easy. As soon as the headmaster left the stage, she proceeded calmly (and seemingly against the tide) towards the lefthand exit.

The line was... Surprisingly short. As in it consisted of, counting herself, two people so far. Rebekah was slightly disappointed. She had hoped to see more magicians at Hybrid Academy, to see how their magic functioned and what their take on it was. Even though there were undoubtedly more than two magicians in the school, it seemed they were vastly outnumbered by the espers. Their powers were fascinating too but she didn't have the capacity to replicate them. She permitted herself a quiet sigh as she took her spot in line, glancing briefly at the other magician, before turning her attention to her phone. Conversation might have been in the cards, but he was already focused on something else.

A few taps on her phone brought up the live video from her living room, where her canine companion dutifully watched the door. It would have been nicer if she could take him with her, but she wasn't worried about leaving him home. Checking up on him once or twice would make sure he didn't get into trouble. Unfortunately, checking up on him only required a few seconds. Without any better idea of what to do, and no flat surface upon which to set up her laptop, she stowed her phone and took playing cards out of the pocket of her uniform's coat.

A few deft moves, and the deck was shuffled. She looked at the top card, returned it to the deck, and shuffled. Repeat ad infinitum.
Don't worry.

Alistair will have company in the magician line soon.
@Krayzikk Nothing special for the Suicide King or the Jokers?

I actually had material for a few more cards, in fact each suite was going to be a unique set. Then I realized partway through that even if the number cards were mostly duplicates, I was going to have way too many spells for her to be allowed.

So I'm saving the other spells for if I ever get the chance to give her some more.
Heeeeeeey double post where I meant to edit
