“I’m sorry about Mileena,” she whispered to him with a saddened look on her face. Cameron couldn’t imagine that pain, and she never wanted to, which was the main reason that she had always tried to never grow attachments to anyone. Not in a hostile world like this.

“Well,” she began, propping herself up a bit, “you may need a little more than watermelon.” She smirked before scratching her head mindlessly in thought. “I really don’t know. I never really planned on making it this far, as awful as that sounds.” The last part of her sentence she mumbled. “I wanna get back into training and fighting. The past few weeks have been fun and all, but fighting for your life takes some of the enjoyment out of the sport.”

She laid back down and bed a sighed faintly. “Maybe I’ll work on your watermelon farm. Or who knows, maybe after we save the world, we’ll be crowned the king and queen of the United States, or however it works. I never paid attention in history class.”

Cameron wiggled her body into a comfortable position and let her eyes begin to flutter shut. “I think it’s best we get some rest, huh?” she whispered. “Good night, Justin.”

*****

A nightmare caused Cameron to pop upright out of bed in full panic, panting for air until she looked around at her surroundings, slightly illuminated by a single candle still burning from the night before. Her head snapped over to Justin’s cot, and she could faintly see the outline of his body underneath a blanket.

After lying back down in bed silently for a few minutes, she made the decision to wake Justin up. The sooner they began their journey up to Portland, the better.

She sat at the edge of his cot, and as his back faced her, she placed a hand on his well-muscled arm and shook him gently. “Hey,” she whispered, “Justin. We should probably head out soon.”

Cameron lifted herself from his cot and marched back to her to prepare her things to go. Her fingers worked at the laces on her boots to tie them, and next, they were desperately trying to wrap her long hair up into the bun that had become an all too familiar hairstyle as of late.

“I’m ready when you are,” she whispered once again as her hands dug through her pack, sorting things in an order they made most sense and taking out unnecessary items that may just weigh her down if she brought them along.

Cameron wasn’t sure that she was 100% mentally prepared for whatever laid ahead of her and Justin, but in reality, she didn’t have a choice. They had to do what they could to secure possible salvation for human, even if that meant sacrificing themselves in the process. Knowing Justin would be coming along did provide a sense of security that was foreign to her, but she gladly took the comfort she got from him. He was easy on the eyes, too. That she couldn’t complain about.

”Stop it, Cameron. Save the world first.”

Another reminder from her inner-voice. It was right though. There were no time for such trivial thoughts right now.
"Shit," he whispered and put his face in his hands after Lola gave him the information she knew. "Lola, I know none of this makes sense to you now. And I probably shouldn't tell you anything, but honestly, you know too much about me already, so what's the point of hiding it?"

He stood up and began to pace the room again. "A Nine did this to my head." He pointed to the injury she had treated hours before. "I, uh, I went into their territory and got one of my guys out from the apartment above the ice cream shop. My guess is not only Jack following you for whatever personal reasons he has, but now your ties with me might escalate things."

Caleb paused and laced his fingers behind his neck. "I had no idea that Jack was affiliated with him. If I saw that fuckin' tattoo before..." his voice trailed off. There was no point in trying to undo anything now. All he could do now is attempt to wade through the waters he was responsible for making.

"I know you wanna go home, but for your safety, even if my boss says you can leave, you might wanna stay at least with my crew for a little while. At least 'til Jack leaves. The Nines are crazy bastards. They have no qualms with hurting women. Killing them. Especially if they've done something like 'date,'" he used air-quotes, "a rival gang member."

He sighed and plopped back down on the couch. "I'm sorry. I didn't know what shit I was getting you into when I saw you at the bar."
"Wait, wait, wait," Caleb mumbled as he popped up to a sitting position and put his hands on both of her shoulders so that she would look at him. "You said Jack's uncle is the owner of the shop on 9th?"

He stood up and began to pace back in forth in front of the television with his hand on his forehead. "This isn't good. This isn't good."

If Lola had been with him so long, she had to have known the ties that Jack had to the Nines, right? Although, Jack seemed that he would be the secretive type and would try to keep her in the dark as much as possible.

He sat down on the coffee table and rested his elbows on his legs. "What do you know about his uncle? Do you know if Jack has any... affiliations of any kind? Anything you can tell me helps."

Not only did Caleb march in there earlier and cause a scene, now he was 'dating' a possible member's ex-girlfriend. He now realized that going that rout when they were in the Chinese restaurant was a bad move. He could have possibly just started a war with rivals that he won't be able to control. Not only that, but the situation with Jack just moved to a whole other level.
Caleb noticed her mood change once he brought up his boss, and he sat up a bit and glared down at her as she sunk in the couch. "It'll be fine. If anything, it'll get you home quicker. Although, it is nice having a nurse around. My boys and I get hurt a lot," he laughed as he sat back into the couch as she was, but this time taking a swig from the bottle that sat on the coffee table.

"Feel free to go do what you want," he offered as he waved a hand towards the rest of the house, "sorry there's not much to do. You don't have to keep me company if you don't want."

Caleb moved his body into a horizontal position on the couch, a hand mindlessly scratching at his head as his eyes locked on to the television. He never knew what to watch, usually because he never had the time to, but he definitely wanted to avoid the news. "Can you find me a good movie to watch first?" he asked quietly. "
Andy and Jane sat across from each other at a small diner only a few minutes from the hotel. She hadn’t bothered going back to the room to change before taking him up on his offer, so she sat in a large white tee shirt, a pair of track shorts that substituted for pajama shorts, and bare feet, fiddling with the straw that popped out of the black iced coffee in front of her.

“You gonna tell me what happened?” Andy asked softly as he glanced up to her.

Jane hadn’t realized how quiet she had been and smiled faintly. “Sorry.” Her head fell into her hands. “Well, I fucked Rob,” she explained bluntly, “like an idiot. I went to go talk to him, but that never goes well. And next thing I know…” her raspy voice trailed off into silence, and she shook her head in frustration.

“Jane,” Andy whispered, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you last night. I wasn’t – “

“Stop,” Jane interrupted. “You didn’t do anything wrong. If anything, that was the vibe I was putting out there. I wanted you to. I’m just… I don’t know, man. Rob’s got me really fucked up.”

Andy nodded in understanding. “You don’t have to explain anything to me, Jane. Really. I’m a grown man. My feelings aren’t hurt.” He smiled at her as reassurance. “Anyway, did Rob say anything afterwards?”

“No. Well, I didn’t really let him. I kinda freaked out and ran out of the room.” She scratched at her head as her eyes burned a hole in the floor.

“What do you want, Jane?” Andy asked frankly.

“What do you mean?”

“From this. You and Rob. What do you want?” He rested his chin on his hand. “Are you even letting yourself think about it?”

Jane scoffed. “No. Not really. I don’t know. Things between us were kind of weird when we decided to try things out.”

“Then, do you really wanna not be casual? Or did it just hurt your feelings that it was Rob who brought it up, and not you?”

“Damn it, Andy. You’re like another Austin,” she smirked.

Andy laughed. “Nah, I’ve just gotten to know you pretty well. You’re an open book.”

“Yeah, I should probably work on that, yeah?” Jane asked as she met his eyes.

He reached over and rubbed the top of her hand that rested on the table. “No. Don’t change.”

*****

Jane eventually made her way back to the hotel room and dove into her bed in the apartment she was temporarily sharing with Sam. She confirmed with Austin if it was still okay for now, who was perched on the couch when she entered the apartment, and he nodded and waved his hand in the air.

She truly didn’t know what to do. Should she admit that she was… wrong? That, perhaps, Rob was right, and what they had tried out just wasn’t working out for either of them? If Jane had to admit, things did get so tense between them. What if it was better for both of them if they kept it physical for now? She would at least need that, she decided, and she was reminded of that now more than ever after the hour of passion she had spent with Rob earlier.

The way she found herself feeling about Andy wasn’t exactly helping the situation either. It was all just so easy with him. Why couldn’t she feel that way with Rob?

And as that thought crossed her mind, Jane realized that may have been the exact same way that Rob felt about Zoe, and it made her feel so selfish that she as hurt by him seeing her. He deserved an outlet for his frustrations just as much as Jane did, and she couldn’t expect Rob to only turn to herself. That wasn’t fair.

As Jane laid in bed, she pulled out her cracked phone, and her thumbs worked on a text to Rob:
Jane: Hey. I’m sorry about earlier. You didn’t do anything wrong. You were probably right, maybe romance just wasn’t in the universe for us and things are better this way.
Jane: That doesn’t mean I don’t wanna see you though.. You gotta admit, we’re too good in bed together to give that up.
Jane: I understand if you don’t wanna talk about it yet.

Well, a few texts.

Jane did her best, once again, to express her feelings through words rather than her body, and although she wasn’t completely satisfied with how they came out, they would have to do for now. Hopefully, for once, she didn’t make things worse.

Now, it was time to get some rest before the show tonight, the one where she would have to sing a song she was forced to write. The one where she’d be in a venue with two guys she was still very confused about. Great.

Jane silenced her phone and swaddled herself in the comforter, eventually drifting off to sleep after her mind raced for another few minutes. Mostly thoughts of Rob, some of Andy, other of the tour that they were about to embark on, but all of them had a common theme: a sense of dread.
Although the level of anger and confusion Justin was feeling about what they had gone through so far was concerning, Cameron couldn’t help but smile as she listened to him talk about the time they’ve spent together. It was funny – out of all the chaos, destruction, and loss they had both seen and experienced, she had become a beacon of hope for him just as he had for her, although it was hard to believe. Cameron wasn’t positive like him. Her outlook on life was bleak. She was damaged and jaded. How would someone like Justin see something so great in her?

Before she could try to verbally reciprocate his sentiments, he hit her with another question. One that caused her to chuckle. “Oh, man,” she mumbled before laughing at herself. “I don’t think my heart has the ability to feel fluttery. I had, uh, flings. Nothing substantial. After word got out about the attack, half the eligible candidates wouldn’t even look me at me.” She rolled her eyes, as if to convince both Justin and herself that it didn’t bother her. Her life in Chesapeake had made her cold and distant towards men in general, which made it so strange to be around the men of Omega, who seemed to have no ulterior motive for their kindness. Although suspicion of them was a natural thing to Cameron, she was slowly but surely letting her guard down. At least, with Justin.

Based on how spiritual Omega seemed to be, she was curious how they viewed things like relationships and intimacy. Her knowledge of what they believed in was very narrow, but until she learned, Cameron decided to keep how she viewed the whole dating and waiting-til-marriage thing to herself for now as to not upset him.

“How ‘bout you?” her raspy voice asked lightly. “Were there any Mrs. Plances on the horizon?” After the words came out, she realized that if he did have anyone, the likelihood that she was killed in one of the multiple attacks on Omega was high, and she scratched her forehead and squeezed her eyes shut. Though, would Justin have really asked without expecting the same question in return?

Why was he asking anyway? Cameron assumed they had moved past the point of small talk. Was he asking for another reason?

The thought made her cheeks flush a bit, but her inner voice spoke up before her mind could ponder it any further. ”He’s just being nice, Cameron. Chill out.”
LMAO thank you. Will work on something soon.

***** And posted!!
Caleb smirked at her last statement but kept his eyes on his plate. "Yeah, well, that's before I knew you'd be such a pain in the ass," he chuckled. "Maybe if you showed some interest and let me buy you a drink, I would've been too preoccupied to kick someone's head in." He was joking; he came to the bar with the intention to do some damage to Connor, but he couldn't help but think of what could have happened if things played out differently.

As he finished his meal, he leaned back into the couch and placed his hands on his stomach. "I'm not excited about the funeral either. Jimmy was my best friend. A brother, really. I'm still in denial that he's even gone. I don't wanna bury him."

He was beginning to feel the effects of the cocktail of Vicodin and vodka, and he scratched the top of his head before his eyes squeezed shut. "Ah," he sighed quietly. "The throbbing finally stopped. Thanks, doc," he grinned as he thanked her.

Caleb took a cigarette from his pack on the table and lit it carefully before exhaling the smoke up to the ceiling. "The wake's at 10. Burial at 11. Then the reception at TJ's at noon. I'm gonna talk to my boss then." He popped an eye open and looked at her. "I'm not gonna let him hurt you, okay?"

Jane was awoken by Austin nudging her arm repeatedly, his muffled voice getting clearer and clearer as she became more lucid. “Jesus, man,” she groaned as she forcefully rubbed her eyes. “The one time I sleep in, you – “

“Rob’s doing an interview right now,” he interrupted her, seemingly unphased by her annoyance.

“Right now?” Jane asked as she popped up to a sitting position.

“Yeah, Harold put him up to it. Come on,” he instructed as he stretched out a hand to get her up.

The two made their way to the living room area where Sam was already sitting and fidgeting with the radio, and they all huddled together around the small clock once they found the correct station. The first thing Jane noticed was Rob’s voice and how calm it sounded compared to their past interviews. The conversation they had must have been a sort of release for him.

And at that realization, Jane felt selfish at how angry she was at Rob for asking for what he wanted. Yeah, it was a blow. But, she couldn’t blame him for feeling a certain way about her. It most likely wasn’t his intention to hurt her.

The three intently listened to the back and forth dialogue between Rob and the host, and it made Jane feel so much better, yet so much worse at the same time.

”I’ve fucked up things I’m worried I can never fix.”

He couldn’t have been talking about her… right? He seemed so sure when he said it. Like he had mulled over it for days before finally admitting it.

After Rob finished and the radio was turned off, Austin’s hand landed on Jane’s shoulder. “You sh – “

“Yeah, I know,” Jane nodded. “I’ll talk to him.”

It was the last thing she wanted to do: open herself up again for Rob to completely reject her. But if they were going to be travelling the world together, she would have to talk to him eventually, and the longer she waited, the weirder things would get.

Austin helped her up and looked at her sternly. “It’s gonna all work out in the end, Jane, no matter which way it goes. I’m here for you.” He kissed her forehead and shooed her out of the room before she could change her mind.

Jane took her time walking down the hallway, forcing herself to take step after step towards her would-have-been room instead of bolting back the opposite way. “Come on,” Jane whispered to herself. “Stop being a pussy.”

After approaching the door, the key hovered over the lock for a few second before she finally slid it in the slot and clicked open the door, squeezing her eyes shut as she stepped in.

“Rob?” Her voice was hoarse, barely reaching the level Jane had attempted. “It’s me.”

Her pace was slow as she eyed the apartment-style hotel room, noting how clean it was – probably because she had yet to occupy it. “Rob?”

She finally found him in bed. Alone. She couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief at the fact that she didn’t find him with Zoe.

“Hey,” she whispered as she took a seat at the foot at the bed and stared at the floor. “I, uh, I heard the interview. I don’t know if – “

Her eyes had locked on his, and she found herself unable to continue. Why was he so intimidating right now? It was unlike Jane to be nervous in front of someone, especially someone she knew as well as Rob.

“I…” Still nothing. But even if she could force words out of her mouth, what would they be? Hey, Rob. You broke my heart by saying that you just want to fuck me. But, I still can’t stand being away from you. I’m pathetic. I love you.

In a swift movement, Jane had crawled up to Rob and straddled him, leaning down to press her lips into his as soon as she got comfortable. With her hands in his hair, she pulled away a few inches from his face and stared at him. “I’m so sick of talking,” Jane whispered, then leaned in to kiss him again. “I’m really fucking angry at you, too, but…” Another kiss, each one more and more aggressive.

Her inner voice was screaming at her to stop. It felt as though she had given in and waved a white flag to Rob. He was getting what he wanted – to be physically intimate with Jane without having to deal with anything else. But Jane couldn’t stop herself. And half of her didn’t want to.

*****

Jane nearly fell onto her back in the softness of the comforter as she caught her breath and wiped her forehead with her arm. For a moment, she felt completely happy, as if the previous events that had drove her and Rob separate ways never happened.

But as soon as the waves of euphoria ripping through her ceased, regret began to trickle in.

“I’m such an idiot,” she whispered aloud as she squeezed her eyes shut, eventually standing up and picking her clothes up off the floor. “You really fucking bummed me out. Yet, here I am, giving you exactly what you asked for.”

Jane dressed as quickly as she could, avoiding any eye contact, and once she pulled her shirt over her head, she turned towards him as she stood in the door way. Tears had already formed in her eyes, but she kept her face as expressionless as possible. “I wanna figure this out. What this all means. But… I just can’t yet. I’m not ready.”

She left the room as quickly as possible, closing the door quietly behind her and sinking down to the patterned carpet that stretched down the long, narrow hallway. She wasn’t able to keep herself from crying this time, and her forehead rested on her knees as the tears rolled off her cheeks and onto her lap.

“Jane?”

Her head popped up to see Andy looking down with furrowed brows at her. “What the hell happened?”
“Get me outta here? Anywhere,” Jane’s voice squeaked as she wiped her eyes.

He pulled her up with a hand and put his arm around her shoulders, squeezing her tightly. “Come on. Lets go get some breakfast in you.”

Jane nodded in silence and let him lead her out of the hallway into the elevator. She wasn't proud about running into the arms of another man while she avoided working things out with Rob, but she was at her most vulnerable state she had seen herself in, and she was gladly taking comfort where she could find it.
Before Caleb could answer her question about the temperature, she began taking off her sweater. His eyes watched her movements, finding himself ogling and looking away before her head popped out of the hoodie. "Pull it together, man," he thought to himself as he shook his head.

"Oh, yeah," he scoffed. "Make the guy with the concussion serve you food." He grabbed the bottle of vodka and the bag of food, bringing it over to the coffee table and plopping it down on the table before he sat down next to her. The pill went into his mouth, followed by the vodka, and he sighed after both of them traveled down his throat. "You're not trying to kill me, are you? I've done enough drugs to have a decent tolerance by now."

Caleb worked at the brown bag in front of them and laid out each carton so that it was accessible to both of them. "So," he began as he made himself a plate, "The funeral tomorrow. I need you to play along as Jimmy's cousin. He and his mom hadn't talked in years, so you're gonna be his cousin from his mom's side. They might be a little rude to you, but I'll make it work. Say that you guys just reconnected or something." He scratched his head as his mind mulled over the possibilities of what could go wrong with the lie that he came up with, but he decided that it was futile. It would be the only thing that could work without raising too much suspicion about his date.

"And I'm sorry for putting my arm around you and shit at the restaurant. My quick thinking isn't what it usually is right now." He had realized that a girl like Lola, who had so much history with awful men, was probably much less trusting than the front she put on appeared to be. He wouldn't want to do anything that would turn her against him.
