The Sion of Hevren, the city also known by its olden name of Berlin, Johnathan Stelridge, burned with fervour atop the pulpit. His preaching was closing to its fevered conclusion, and the audience was rapt in its attention.

“That is why we born of magic must resist the cold incursion of those who call themselves servants of technology, for we know that to serve the fires of industry is naught but to accept enslavement by cold steel. That is the message this church seeks to pass to each and every-one of you, and soon, soon we will be strong enough to send back those who scarred this earth, whose legacy we still seek to heal to this very day, we will change them or we will tear them asunder.” Always the orator, he paused and allowed the applause to ring out, the assembled crowds burning with the fire only a true believer could stoke within the soul of a mortal. It was a satisfying sight.

“Thank you for listening my children, depart now and take this message to all those you meet, it is the Church of Remus that hears your pleas, together we are strong, we will fight the fires of industry and drive out those who defy God himself, good night.” As always the few individuals who had failed to seem properly engaged were picked up as they exited by some higher members of the brotherhood, either magically tracked or taken away for questioning. Infiltration was always a concern for the increasingly paranoid founder of the Church, Romus.

Johnathan walked away from the pulpit, his brown robes flapping around his ankles somewhat dramatically, his large form making its way through a few stragglers with benevolent care towards their wellbeing. The stern faced priest may not have looked quite the part with his rough exterior, but there was a genuine goodness in the Sion. He rubbed at his temple with meaty hands almost the moment he entered the privacy of his chambers at the back of the church. The tension left him slowly, but there was always that niggling doubt that sank somewhere deep beneath his subconscious, emanating a sharp but somehow subtle discomfort. Was all what it seemed?
Speaking of new people, has anyone picked up the couple of people expressing interest? I think they both asked for an introduction of sorts.

Rilla, you're the Arena spokesperson with the shifty connections to moderators, sort it out mate.

Hey Yoshua have you decided on how you want to go about our fight? You can see pretty much the full list of potential fighters I have here. If you would prefer to just have a rematch I would have to insist on the relative speed nerf to your character, at least to a range where-by Sigurd could potentially land a hit with his relatively human capabilities.

If you need to keep it canon his arm does have a magic nullifying effect, so it could explain the speed decrease.
<Snipped quote by MelonHead>

my opponent has two un-nerfed guns and a laser....

Huh, well I thought I was the only gun user left, but I do remember the super-president now that you mention it.
I'm a fairly abrasive person, and I am often far too quick to throw words around - in that you're correct. I'm sorry for having been offensive.

In this instance, I wasn't referring specifically to you. You have taken some of Innue's points on board and I laid you for at least having made the effort to try. It is something that a lot of people have not done.

Fair enough, I too suffer from the same problem and it usually takes a while before people catch on to those sorts of nuances about a person and accept them. Any community has that early teething problem, the Arena being as small as it is probably leads to it being considered insular by some, but I would only argue that we know each other fairly well for the most part, so our arguments and debating seem unusual until you get used to them. I would never have it said that the majority of us don't try our utmost to encourage newcomers, but in anything competitive like this there is always the potential of pretty heated debates over regulations and rules, and change to systems that have worked fairly well for the past three years or so is hard for that reason.

Yoshua, I understand the point you're making sits somewhere between the two points of view, though don't get me wrong my response wasn't one out of irritation in this case, I was just pointing out how certain uses of language can cause irritation and have done in the past.

On this, however, I am being completely objective and free of bias:

This community is insular. It is so insular that challenging ideas are met with dismissal and "You do not have to play by our rules", rather than openly discussed and debated. It comes across as being a high school clique rather than a legitimate area of RP and that is a terrible shame because there are extremely creative and talented people here, and more people could join that community if it was not like it is.

No your not, you're biased and true objectivity doesn't exist.

No it's not, you've just received more resistance because you've entered an established community that is normally welcome, thrown your 'RPing experience' in everyone's face in a condescending manner, and been way too free with your insults. (which is how you've managed to irritate me.)

Ultimately, your point is invalidated by the fact that I spent most of yesterday arguing against the established rule-set and debating on Innue's side. LeeRoy has his own beliefs on the system, he isn't any-more representative of the community than anyone else.

Short story short, your own behaviour is responsible for the reception you've received from Arena, as is true of everyone, and despite the arguments spurred up constantly I've seen two or three new people express interest in what is by all accounts a very niche part of RPing.

So. How's that?

Also, vote Rilla 2k15.

Not really. If you have a fire user, and I am in a corner what stops you from setting the building on fire to get me out of my hole and into a better place for you to engage me? If you use water what stops you from creating some water effect or darkness or any of the other magics people have. If you are locked in melee person but have a shield that can stop a giants blow, yeah you can move in and be safe. If you are a flier, well then I hate you because either I come out or it becomes a draw. There are many, many ways to fight a gun fighter. The issue is most people don't actually think and use the terrain to their advantage while gun fighters have to.

Well, because they're a melee character so they don't have all those options.

Fire would be a particularly useful tool, though if they move within sight of the gunman to use it they're going to get shot before their fire can kill them, the same as most magics.

I'm not saying gunmen can't be fought of course, I'm just pointing out that at equal tier levels someone with a gun is going to beat someone with a sword 9 times out of 10 just by the merit of their weapons capabilities, as opposed to any particular writing skill or originality of attack. Also, the range of terrain which favours a gunman is absolutely huge. Pretty much any area with line of sight longer than five meters the gun reigns supreme, until you get past its barrel it will kill you at any range up to 300 feet.

The compromise in my opinion that could potentially balance things in a tournament setting is by making guns a significant tier increaser, setting even a completely ordinary human at the level of a T2 or T3 character on the old system, ensuring that their body at least is fallible to offset the inherent power of a gun. For example, if you gave the Clockwork Man of mine an automatic weapon, he would be damn near unbeatable for anyone save those of a significant higher tier than him, due to his equally powerful physical characteristics.

Just an idea, I'm going to go get drunk, later.

Of course when they get close I tend to hold my shot until I get it so I cannot miss them because they are doing something dumb, like running at me when I back myself into a corner and they have no way to avoid the hit.

If they're locked into melee though what choice do they have? This is where my samurai analogy comes back out.

It does significantly limit the amount of characters that can effectively fight guns.

I guess you could say the same about flying opponents though, which accounts for the somewhat lack-lustre end to the WOTW tournament the year prior to when I showed up.
Ok. So you are dealing with the player not the character. If a player is a dickhead, no matter what they use; magic, guns, or galaxies they will be a dickhead getting in the perfect hit, the never miss and the always on target shots. If you are fighting T1 there really is no inherent problems with gunfighters.

This does tend to be the biggest problem with fighters. Marksmanship is probably the one area where I would generally recommend a dice system of some form.

I try and miss about one in every three of my shots, carrying over into other fights, just to keep things realistic for my own benefit.

Innue, have you been in a firefight? You know that is not true. Moving to hit a target is much harder then hitting a stationary target. A moving target requires you to move as well, to try and keep a shot lined up. If cover is involved and they make it to cover you now need to work twice as hard to get the shot as they ain't gonna sit still.

The problem with citing the difficulty of such action only really applies to lower tier characters. Because someone can bring a gun and a host of other supernatural skills that makes them insane marksmen and still sit comfortably in the mid-tier range they have the inherent advantage that causes all these issues.

I can say it's hard as fuck to shoot a moving target though, in my experience it was paintball and one of my particularly fast friends though, so the far superior speed of a bullet may have made it easier even for a relative amateur like me.
