Appearance: As with all Bosmer, Naenya is not particularly tall. Being on average the smallest of all the races, she seems to be your typical height and stature for a Bosmeri female; only just scraping the 4'11'' mark (Although she insists that she's taller than 5 foot), and having a rather slim and dainty body. Narrow shoulders, a petite waistline and seemingly delicate facial features and limbs. While true that she has a distinct lack of muscle – one doesn't need it for throwing fireballs around, that's for sure – she is by no means easy to break. This is evident by the multitude of scars dotted around her body and face, marring her olive-tinted tawny skin in a manner that a more vain woman than herself would be bothered by. The scars are by no means disfiguring in her eyes, simply evidence of a battle won well. The ones most obvious would be the long-faded ones upon her face; two scratches on her left cheek near her nose, one dragging down on her lip to leave a miniscule shallow ridge there; the other is another scratch on her forehead, carving a path through her slim eyebrow, although thankfully missing the eye. Naenya will occasionally wear war paint, but never bothers to hide the scarring.
While never considering herself to be vain, Naenya does like to look after her hair. It's of a manageable length, brushing just past her shoulders and easily tied up; however, more often than not only her fringe is pulled up and back, tied at the crown of her head and the rest remaining loose. Some strands can often come undone and get in the way of her curious golden eyes. Despite this, it always seem rather tamed and clean. She'll tell people it's some kind of illusion magic, but really she just brushes and washes her chestnut coloured hair as often as she can, regardless of her environment. A very low-powered heat spell does wonders for drying it quickly too.
As for her attire, Naenya tends to go for simplicity. Being a mage she has no skill, strength or want for any kind of armour, so she can be found most of the time in mages robes of a light teal colour, paired with some sturdy travelling boots. Nothing particularly fancy about them, barring the odd bit of subtle jewellery here and there. Out of her combat outfits she'll go for plain dresses, or something equally as comfortable.
Personality: In a word, Naenya is a curious individual. There's nothing much in this world that doesn't hold some kind of interest to her, because above nearly all else, she loves to learn about new things. She could listen enraptured to a lecture about the brand new side-effects found in eating minotaur horn shavings, while everyone else has dozed off around her. And her interests are not just found in academic areas; her knack for listening in such an encouraging manner can pass along to most of anything - anecdotes of somebody's past adventures, no matter how far-fetched or tame, will always entertain her; a child chattering away about their imaginary friend, or the great heroic deeds they'll do when they grow up will be met with an excited grin and a heartening wish of good luck. From this, one would consider her to be a fairly bright person; amicable to most, although it's guaranteed some will find her enthusiasm almost over-bearing... and more cynical individuals have misconstrued her genuine interest in them as patronising. However, shut-downs from others are rare to stem the near constant tide of chatter coming from her own voice, because while she loves to listen, she really loves to talk. She has all this knowledge within her, so why shouldn't she pass it along to others? And so she does - a ten minute walk in the countryside with her will bring with it a constant commentary on the alchemical properties of the flowers you pass, the diseases found in the saliva of the wolf that just ran by, and OH, look at that adorable little hedgehog, isn't he simply marvellous!. You get the idea.
While some will find this tirade of hers tiring, it becomes even more so when you want to get a straight answer out of her. If you're wandering around in the woods with her and want to know if this particular mushroom is safe to eat, she'll rattle off a list of good mushrooms, bad mushrooms, mushrooms to make you sick and mushrooms to make you trip. Then she'll be distracted by a deer that's wandered by, stumble through some bushes to get a closer look, then be distracted again by a strange looking root sticking out of the ground. She'll give it a few prods, walk back to you, and completely forget what question you asked her in the first place – in a word, "scatter-brained". Potentially - but most likely - linked to her scatter-brained ways is her clumsiness. Perhaps there's a reason she prefers magic to combat and stealth; as in, she has all the grace of a newborn horse walking on ice. She'll bump into obvious corners, trip over thin air, and Gods forbid she ever carry a handful of something fragile. It wouldn't last five minutes.
Despite all this, she will always remain at heart a good person. Naenya may accidentally trip over you or break your foot by standing on it – but in battle, she will protect her friends from anything, at any cost to herself. The only time she'd consider her companions to be harmed is by some ridiculous accident... usually caused by herself. But with a quick healing spell, a contrite smile, and some kind of apologetic gesture (Usually either hugs or food... some people don't like personal contact, so food it is! They usually get a stealth hug anyway...), Naenya takes away any hard feelings left.
Backstory: Naenya was born 55 years ago in Cheydinhal – home to the Great Chapel of Arkay; the Mages Guild specialising in Alteration; a rather curious abandoned house; and of course, Naenya's parents. A Bosmer by the name of Andalwen, and an Altmer named Elendial. While neither of them were native to the city, Elendial considered it rather warmly as a fine home; and more than good enough to raise his darling daughter in. Andalwen, however, did not consider this. In fact, she had disliked all of Cyrodiil since she had first arrived with her parents nearly 50 years before the birth of her daughter. For she had been brought up in her homeland of Valenwood, surrounded by magnificent trees and the very essence of nature running deep among their people. However, her parents were no longer welcome in their forest home – rumours had come about that they had been sympathetic to the Camoran Usurper, even going so far as to give him information as he cut a bloody swathe across their beloved home. Whether these rumours were true or not, Andalwen did not know; but she and her parents fled when she was still a child, and even then, she disliked her new home. Not just for the people, but the way they lived their lives. There would be no Green Pact here, and while many Bosmer (Particularly those living outside of Valenwood) did not follow the Green Pact so religiously, Andalwen refused to let it go properly. However, she could not return... so reluctantly, assimilated to life among other races.
This had to change when Naenya was born. Andalwen hadn't expected it; Elendial had approached her in the Mages Guild, of which they were both members. He was nice; not bad to look at, but also not as snobby as most Altmer she had met – there was an amicable, non-serious air about him that was appealing to her. One night of enjoyment led to several more, and before she knew it, they were properly courting, and she had fallen pregnant. A baby was something she hadn't particularly thought much about, but now that she was bringing a child into the world, she would be damned if she wouldn't be brought up like a real Bosmer; back in Valenwood, back to their home and the Green Pact. Andalwen planned to take the child in the dead of night, knowing Elendial would disagree with it. He'd probably want her to stay in Cheydinhal, eating... plants. Sickening.
Unfortunately for Andalwen – and perhaps fortunately for Naenya – her plan didn't quite go as smoothly as anticipated. Elendial knew his "beloved" was no such thing, and had predicted she would try and take off in the night with their child. He was happy to see her go, happy to break their union – but under no circumstances would she take his daughter with her. This led to an angry stand-off between the pair, onlookers growing increasingly concerned for the babe laying in Elendial's arms, and the crackle of magic ready at Andalwen's fingertips. As the city guards got wind of the situation and approached the pair, Andalwen backed down with a scoff – the child was a half-breed anyway. He could have her – and then, she left.
Elendial was forever concerned that she would return some day, because he knew damn well that she wanted her daughter; but she never did return. Naenya grew up quite happily with her father, who encouraged her in all of her childish endeavours, no matter how silly. And what with magic playing such a large part in her life from a young age, it was no surprise at all that an eager 10 year old Naenya demanded to be taught the same spells her father used. She wanted to light the fires in the kitchen with her hands too; and why could he make such pretty tinkling lights that bobbed above her head and she couldn’t? While he thought she was rather young for any real magic, after nearly a month of whining and petulant faces he gave in to her request: He would teach her some basic things.
Naturally, he avoided destruction spells; instead starting with something innocent, like light-based illusion magic. Now, a 10 year old can rarely produce anything decently magical, so for weeks she pored over books about the theory behind it, practicing day and night and ignoring her other studies just to try and cast this one spell. And one day, she did it; the tiniest, sputtering little light erupted from the palm of her hand, landing right on her watching father's nose and twinkling there for a few moments, before fading away entirely.
After that, Naenya couldn't be stopped. By the time she reached 16 she had learnt many basic spells, and was helping out at the Mages Guild with her father. By 18, she became a member; again, after much begging and pleading with both her father, and the Guildmagister there. The title of Associate didn't mean much at her young age, beyond discounts on spells, and of course, being bossed around by the more mature members. But with so much more to learn, how could she complain? Jobs were done without a sour word, and in no time at all, Naenya was moving up in the ranks herself; focusing very much on Alteration magic, what with so many at Cheydinhal being talented in the school. However, she would have been foolish to ignore the other schools; there was so much interesting history behind everything, after all. In fact, while studying Conjuration, she'd lose herself in books and tomes about the Daedra and their realms instead of actually learning the summoning spells, much to the ire of her teachers.
By 30, she'd established herself as a fairly decent mage, in most, if not all, the schools of magic... but her mind was heading towards more scholarly areas. Following a job for a recommendation, she was asked to retrieve a stone from a nearby Ayleid ruin. The mage in question had visited there, and had noticed the inscribed stone set in the wall of the ruin; however, he was getting on and was rather frail at this point, and couldn't have hoped to get the stone out of there before attracting some unwanted attention. Naenya was more than happy to try, after being assured there were nothing more than some goblins and a skeleton or two in the ruins; she did however, prepare herself slightly. Reading up on the various traps one could find in the ruins from one of the books in the Guild library, she stocked up on potions and made her way to the ruin.
Naenya could have spent hours in that place, looking and examining every tiny detail – if it hadn't been for those pesky creatures, that was. The elderly mage had been correct; there were goblins and skeletons. However, there were distinctly more than she first expected. From where she stood; hidden, behind a pillar of white stone, she could see her prize right across the room. Unfortunately, the goblins had clearly annoyed the skeletons and the two rather large groups were tearing each other apart; the ruin's silence being punctuated by the roars and screams of the monsters, clanging metal and the creaking of dusty old bones. 'Twas quite the predicament for a girl who had no combat training, and was about as quiet as an earthquake. While it was easy to stay still and quiet by hiding behind a pillar, waiting for the goblins and skeletons to wipe each other out... there were still some of the pesky things left over. A handful of Goblins, still kicking it. Feeling confident, Naenya readied her staff – her magic would easily defeat 6 of them! No wait, 7? 10?...
Some 8 hours later, a battered and bloodied Naenya was stumbling through the doors of the Cheydinhal Mages Guild; proudly brandishing the inscribed stone at the aghast mage with a cheerful grin. While two more goblins had run to the room after hearing the commotion, Naenya had held her own. Gave her some fantastic scars, but she wasn't complaining – the trip had been quite a pleasant one, if you ignored the injuries. After this incident, Naenya spent quite a lot of time with the elderly mage, studying the inscriptions with him. By the time she received all of her recommendations, she was studying about the Ayleids in the Arcane University; being taught the written and spoken language and grammar (Or at least, what was learnt of their language and grammar) by the mage who had first set her on this path of knowledge.
As the years passed, Naenya's knowledge and talent in magic increased – but it wasn't quite enough for her. There were so many different aspects of the world that she had yet to discover, and there was only so much she could learn in books. Her curiosity grew and she spent an increasing amount of time away from the Guild – doing what, nobody was entirely sure. Some said Daedra worship, others said more traversing into Ayleid ruins... but when some Mages sowed the rumours of necromancy about, people began to grow suspicious. While not illegal at this point, opinions about the magic were split as Hannibal Traven increased his power and influence in the Guild. When he totally outlawed Necromancy when becoming Arch-Mage in 3E 431, Naenya's mysterious acts were brought under scrutiny. When finding out about the accusations, Naenya was only to happy for an investigation to follow – but even after being cleared of it, her relationship with the Guild had changed. The rumours had been started maliciously - she didn't know by whom, but it was likely one of her or her father's rivals. How could she trust the people of the Guild anymore when they accepted such foul stories so readily? The fun seemed to drain from the place as it became stuck in the mire of politics – even her father grew tired of it all, and the pair finally made the decision to leave.
In the past year, Naenya has struck out on her own; while having left the Mages Guild, she still had many friends dotted around the various guild halls, so visits there were frequent. It was only recently that she visited the Kvatch Mages Guild, purchasing and learning a brand new Destruction spell from a friend there. What better place to practice this new spell than the arena? Naenya was sure the Count would enjoy the lightshow, and besides, a bit of extra money wouldn't hurt, would it?
