Grace flinched visibly at the question and looked down again, the ice starting to creep back. “I um... my sister...” She took a long inhale and let it out slowly. “When we were kids we used to play together all the time. She loved watching me use my powers, and I actually used to enjoy using them. We built snowmen, skated around the street on ice, all kinds of things. One day though, we were playing and some other kids came over, they started calling me things like freak, one pushed me. I slipped and hit the ground, thick needle-like spines burst from the ground. Courtney...” She shuddered and shook her head quickly.

“After that... after I became aware that I could hurt people I got scared. My ability to control it went to virtually zero. I started turning everything I touched to ice.”

“So this inability to control it comes from a fear of hurting people?” Melissa interjected, not wanting her to continue and get any more upset. “Every time you think about being near other people you get scared and nervous, anxious?” Grace nodded slowly, her white-blonde hair falling in front of her face before she pushed it back slightly behind her ear. “Did you know that your powers are uncontrollable because they’re reacting to your fear? It’s a defence mechanism. You’re trying to defend yourself, the issue is that there isn’t anything to defend yourself from.”
Rebecca didn’t seem to notice the sourness in Adrian’s voice; if she did then she didn’t seem to mind anyway. The girl hopped down off her seat and followed the man contently, staying silent this time. As they reached the main lobby of the building she looked at the few tense security guards that seemed uneasy in letting her outside. However, at Adrian’s side she was free to leave the building, the girl running the last few steps and actually stopping as she got outside, looking up at the tall buildings almost in awe. She was stunned silent, nothing but wide eyes and big open mouth on her face.

“You know... I haven’t been outside since I came to this place.” She eventually said softly, turning to smile slightly at Adrian. I’ve missed the sun, the fresh air, the wind...” Her wings spread wide as a cool gust of air blew through them, ruffling her feathers and tossing her hair. For a long time it looked as if she were about to fly away. But eventually they were folded back into her back and she jumped down the few steps and landed lightly on the sidewalk.

“Okay then, so... where are we going exactly?” She asked, sounding a little unsure of herself. Now that she was outside she had no idea where to actually go or what to do. Rebecca was excitable and keen but she would never hesitate to admit when she didn’t know what she was doing or when she needed help. “And... when we actually find this guy... what do we do?” She knew what she’d usually do, rush in and slam the guy, maybe drop him from a high place. But right now whilst she was thinking clearly she wasn't as keen to do things like that.
Grace watched the two as they entered the room and Sebastian explained that they were going to help her try and learn to control her powers. She nodded slowly, but Melissa could see she didn’t have much hope. I’m going to be teaching Sebastian to eventually do what I do, which is help to mentor younger people with powers like ours so that they can control them. But we’re also here if you want to talk to us, tell us how you’re feeling and things like that.” She walked over and sat in front of the girl on the floor, placing the cup of water on the floor beside her and motioning for Sebastian to join her.

“For today Sebastian is just going to be observing alright? And we’ll just be talking, maybe trying a few exercises okay?” Grace looked up at her and nodded slightly. “So, you may or may not have figured out by now that I can read minds, as well as communicate with people telepathically. Sebastian can teleport. I want you to tell me a bit about what you can do, what you know about your powers.”

Grace was silent for a little while, and Melissa waited patiently until she eventually spoke. “I have... ice powers? I suppose. I can create ice and snow.” She couldn’t really say ‘at will’ could she? “I also seem to be immune to the cold. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

Melissa smiled happily, this was good progress, getting her to open up and talk about them. She looked to Sebastian and then glanced at the floor and back to him, hoping he’d notice that the ice around Grace was starting to recede. “Can you control the ice and snow you’ve created?” She asked eventually. “Manipulate it? Or once it’s there is it just there?”

“I used to be able to control it.” Grace answered softly.
Melissa laughed lightly at his ideas. “No, you don’t get a special suit, unless you want to. No one’s going to stop you. But we certainly don’t have any to provide you with. And we don’t really go on ‘missions’ exactly we’re just a school remember. You get to mentor people on how to use their powers, maybe teach classes if you feel like you can. That’s about it.” She shrugged slightly, it wasn't so bad really. “For now, we should focus on Grace; she’ll eventually be your responsibility when you’re ready. Though I think she may be a bit of a tougher case than some.”

She stood and walked out of the office, making her way back down to Grace’s room, but not before stopping by the kitchen to get a cup of water. Once at the door she stopped and turned to Sebastian. “Firstly you have to make sure they feel safe around you, with Grace it’s more that she is scared of hurting people, we know this from what her parents told us. It’s important to get as much information as we can so we know how to handle the situations. We can’t force ourselves on her; she has to let us in.” She raised her hand and knocked on the door, which was still rather cold. “Grace? Do you mind if I come in?” She called, and waited before opening the door. “Okay, I cheated there a little.” She smiled at him, hinting she had used her powers again.
Grace looked up when the boy knocked on the door and asked if she was okay. Honestly, no, she wasn't really okay. His words did comfort her, the hope that this place could actually help her control her powers. However when he said everyone had been thought this she really hoped that he was lying. The idea that everyone had been though what she had... she hoped it was either a lie or he just didn’t know. It went quiet and she looked to the door for a long time before eventually looking back to the floor as ice began slowly spreading over the floor.

Melissa looked up before she ever heard the knock on the door. “Come in Sebastian.” She said, smiling at the boy when she saw him. “You’re worried about Grace aren’t you?” She tried to not read people’s minds but it was hard when their thoughts were practically screaming out at them. “Sebastian... you’re a very exceptional case, you have amazing control over your powers, considering how long you’ve been using them. If anything we hold you back more than anything else because we don’t want you to hurt yourself, but you’re clearly capable of more than we allow you to do.”

“I’ve been thinking, for some time now, about training you to be a mentor too, like myself and the others. Grace... I think might be a good way to start you out. I’ll be there to help you, you can watch how I do it and then you can try under my supervision if you like. This is all if that is something you might be interested in doing of course, and if Grace agrees too. We can’t help those who don’t want it. Is this maybe something you want to do Sebastian?”
Everything seemed quiet and calm. Gace was about to take a step out into the room when suddenly the boy from the other day just appeared right in front of her. She screamed in fright and slammed the door closed, watching as more ice began to form on the wood where she had been holding the door. Outside she could hear the boy apologising, saying he’d been scared too and whilst she knew he meant that he was only scared from her being there when he hadn't expected someone she felt like he was saying he had been scared of her.

“It’s- it’s fine.” Grace said softly, looking to the door as she backed away from it cautiously, holding up her hands as her heart thudded in her chest. “I’m fine.” She told him, though it was very much a lie. “I’m fine right here.” She made a small movement and before she realised what had happened a blast of ice shot from her hands and blasted the door. It didn’t open, but more ice was starting to spread over the surface. Sinking down to the floor she looked at her shaking hands and shook her head slowly.

Her powers were just too powerful for her. Sitting on the floor she looked back to the door and then to the floor. At least in here she didn’t have to worry about hurting anyone. She wondered what made the boy come here. He’d seen what she’d done to her own room. Why didn’t he realise it was just safer to stay away from her?
Melissa smiled at the boy's request and nodded slightly. "You can go ahead and teleport back to the school, let them know we've got a new student coming and have a room prepared for her." She reached out and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "I don't want to risk you hurting yourself by going so far with such a large load. Besides, when we arrive it will be close to midnight and everyone will be asleep in their rooms. I'd prefer it that way, to lessen Grace's anxiety." She smiled reassuringly at him and nodded to go. Personally she liked the long drive, it gave her a lot of quiet time to herself to think.

Grace woke to darkness. She was in a small bedroom and she blinked a few times. Once the haze of sleep began lifting she remembered what had happened and where she now logically was. Moving over to the small window she peeled back the curtain, squinting as the light hit her eyes. Outside the room she saw a large courtyard with beautiful gardens and dozens of happy looking people. She smiled slightly, until she saw her hands freezing up the window, covering it in frost and she pulled back swiftly, the curtain falling back over the window. Turning towards the door she approached it cautiously, opening it just a little and peeking out into what seemed to be an empty hallway.
Melissa could feel the fear of the girl inside. The fear was not so much of people judging her or shaming her. She’d never experienced it, locked up in her house and cut off from people as she had been for so long. No, she was terrified of her own powers, scared of hurting people. That was likely the reason she was so unable to control herself; powers had a strange way of reacting to emotions, if she felt scared or anxious, no doubt caused by the experience with her sister, her powers would react to that defensively, even if it wasn't needed.

The more she tried to repress it the more it would build up. She’d no doubt hurt herself or someone else if she didn’t let it out soon. However she doubted sending Sebastian in there, he’d likely scare her but so long as he remained calm she knew Grace wouldn’t attack him. Her parents had said he wouldn’t hurt someone intentionally, and Melissa knew this. But right now her powers were quite volatile. Still, Sebastian knew what he was doing. He’d be fine. And if anything started going wrong then she’d intervene.

Inside the room it was easily freezing cold. Grace was huddled on her bed, hugging her knees to her chest and hiding her head in her lap. Everything in the room was frozen solid, frost building up on a lot of the surfaces and a light snow was falling from the ceiling, a light powder covering the icy floor. Grace had a dark blue coat on and some jeans but she didn’t seem to be bothered by the cold at all. When she heard someone suddenly speak to her she looked up fearfully, wondering how they’d gotten in here.

Her eyes shifted to the door which was still frozen shut with a thick layer of ice covering it before she looked back to the boy. He looked a bit older than she was. He was tanned, with dark hair, like someone from a warm climate. She could see the cold affecting him, he was already shivering and his breath was creating a light fog when he breathed. The question of who he was still plagued her mind, but how he’d gotten in here was also a good one. This was a second story room; the window was frozen shut too.

And he knew her name. She nodded slowly in response to his question, but didn’t move from where she was sitting. “I’m Grace, yes.” She said softly before she cast her deep blue eyes back towards the floor. “You should stay back though. I’m... I’m not safe.” She winced slightly at this statement and a small tear could be seen escaping the side of her eye before it froze on her cheek.

“Grace?” The sudden voice made her look towards the door fearfully. “My name is Melissa. This boy here is Sebastian. We’re here to take you somewhere where you can learn to control your powers. You don’t need to be afraid of us alright?” Grace shook her head determinedly. “Do you want to come with us? Why don’t you unfreeze the door so I can talk to you in person?”

“I can’t!” Grace suddenly screamed; the area around her growing thicker with ice and frost. “I can’t ‘unfreeze’ any of it. It doesn’t work like that.”

Outside Melissa paused. She hadn't anticipated that Grace had so little control she’d be unable to remove the ice she’d created. “Would you consent to me putting you to sleep so we can get you out of here without you freezing anything else?” She called through the door. Once she was asleep she wouldn’t freeze anything and Sebastian would be able to get her out of the room and to the car without risk of him getting hurt.

After a pause Grace nodded, looking over to the boy, Sebastian. She knew she didn’t want to be here anymore, and she did want to learn how to control it. But she doubted she ever would. After a few seconds she felt her mind going fuzzy and everything started to go black. “You can bring her down to the car now, Sebastian. Her powers won’t actively work whilst she’s asleep.” Melissa then turned and began making her way back to the car, ready to take the two back to the instirute.
Rebecca took the folder and looked at it for a moment, not bothering to open it up and read it. “Oh you can call me Rebecca.” She quipped happily as she trotted along after him. “I mean you probably won’t, no one else has ever called me that when I asked them to. Except Melissa, but she’s really nice. She was always the one who told me not to worry and that I’d find a partner someday. So, you must be really hey, if they put you with me. I got paired with a bunch of other people before you, but I’d never get past the mission simulators, they always told me it wasn't going to work out and they’d see what they could do. But I’d never hear from them again about the matter.”

This incessant chatter continued on the entire way towards the arms room, the winged girl only bothering to skim over the file as they arrived. “Hey Zac,” She greeted with a wave as he entered the room. She looked up at him and smiled, the man smiling back at her. “Rebecca, really? You and... and Adrian?!” He looked at the other man for a moment, unsure if this was actually happening or not, but went ahead at the nod.

He took the file from Rebecca and skimmed it over too. “Oh... magnetism, interesting.” He said as he looked over the shelves of arms. “No metal, that goes without saying. If you guys have anything on that’s metallic, best to take it off now.” Rebecca looked up at him and then glanced down at her arm, which only made him smile. “Don’t worry, Bec, non-magnetic metals only. You’ll be fine.” She smiled in return as he passed her over a clear gun, looking object. “Completely plastic, plastic tranquiliser rounds, and an extra clip for you.” Which she slipped into a holder on her thigh.

He then moved over to Adrian and passed him a similar set up, though with an added small device. “For... you know.” He said hesitantly, as he looked over to Rebecca, who was absently playing with her feathers.” All mutants in the facility were fitted with a microchip in their arms. They were told it was for tracking purposes, and it was, but it also had the capability to deliver an electric shock, something mild enough to simply stun them or high enough to kill them, only to ever be used if they were putting themselves, their partners or innocent people in danger. And all the agents knew it was only ever to be used as a last resort.
