Anemia sucks. I feel like there's an invisible vampire sucking my energy through a straw.

@WatermelonTango Haha he's perfect! I'd be honored to mod such a gentleman.

UPDATE: New characters may be summoned into the current events of the RP with no prior knowledge or reason for being there. As of now our heroes have discovered hidden traps and stone guardians at the heart of a colossal forest in the middle of nowhere. Their leader has betrayed them and now lies unconscious. There is no way to go back; the forest has confused the trail behind them. There are several devices hidden throughout the masked ruins, one of which may summon assistance from across the continent.

In other words, we're looking for new players! :)

A Crumpled Letter Arrives

You’ve just received a letter from Kettle, an old acquaintance of yours. She is an anthropologist, a painter, a scholar of mythology and the founder of the Potoo Preservation Association; she has traveled to every corner of the planet, and claims friendship with quite a few talented and curious people. Several of those prominent acquaintances might have received the same sort of letter -- typed by a faulty typewriter on the back of a menu for the wild and remote Blunderbuss Cafe, delivered in a wax-sealed envelope by a dubious messenger -- which read thusly:

Salutations! It has been quite awhile since we’ve spoken, hasn’t it? I do hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits; and if it does not, I hope to brighten your day just a tad with this note. I believe myself to be on the cusp of a revolutionary discovery, one that may shatter the current boundaries of scientific possibility, and I’d like you to be a part of it. You’ll find me at the reverse location on the fifth of March, if you’re up for a bit of fame and fortune. Please tell no one where you’re going, and use the utmost secrecy in your travels. Watch out for magpies. Yours, Kettle

Concept

This is a fantasy sandbox RP with a plot woven into the background. The characters are anticipated to go on an expedition to uncharted ruins, which could be the remains of a legendary city sought for centuries by explorers. Kettle is being uncharacteristically secretive about it, however, and has sent cryptic invitations by private courier instead of enlisting the help of the locals. She is not the only one seeking the ruins, and her every move is being watched.

Guidelines

The Setting: This world is not Earth. It is primarily fantasy, but there is no magic. Most of the world sees little need for more than tents and fire pits, while the more developed cities enjoy steampunk-like technology levels. Players are encouraged to develop the world around their characters -- to create environments, creatures, and societies that affect their characters' backstories -- as long as the players remain aware that any worldbuilding may or may not be used in the RP. During character creation, the GM might make suggestions for characters to further tie them into the plot and to the setting.

The Gameplay: For Every Action There Is An Equal And Opposite Reaction. This game is based on exploration, investigation, interaction, and mystery. In order to get the most out of the game, the character must be observant, goal-oriented, and willing to act in order to meet those goals. Everything -- everything -- is a potential plot-changer, from a light in the distance to a passing comment by an NPC. It is up to the PC to pick up on important clues in the scene, to make their own conclusions, and to act upon those conclusions. How the PCs act and react determines the course of the story. Every post shall be a step forward; characters who wait for something to happen to them will be standing in the same place for a very long while.

The Characters: All characters start out acquainted with Kettle and with at least one other character. Players are encouraged to be creative with this, and to make enemies as well as friends, idols, and rivals. Characters may come from any type of environment or society (tribe, village, prison, palace, city) which is up to you to describe. Non-human characters are welcome, as long as they are of a commonly recognizable race. No character shall have any magical abilities whatsoever.

Character Creation

During gameplay, characters will always surprise you: they'll make decisions you never expected, they'll whip out skills you didn't know they had, they'll get into all sorts of trouble you never anticipated during the CS phase. Therefore, players are encouraged to keep their sheets simple and open-ended.

(The character sheet has been adjusted for new characters who will not have been with the expedition from the beginning)

NAME:

ABSTRACT:

Write one sentence to define your character.

DETAIL:
Tell us anything and everything about your character.

Some Thoughts

Inspirations for this RP come as far and wide as H.P. Lovecraft, Myst, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, Avatar TLA and Korra, Tolkien, Marvel, FIASCO, Mushi-Shi, Firefly . . . Essentially the world and setting is a soup of whatever I think is awesome. When thinking of the world your character grew up in, just go with whatever you think is awesome, with a technology cap of steampunk level (anything below that is just fine).

A lot of the made-up creatures in this RP will probably use the Avatar style of creature mash-up: dogotters, hawkcats, lionlizards, duckpandas. Feel free to do the same if you're making creatures. Mystical animals are available for mashups too, but again keep in mind the no-magic rule when developing pets.
ok excellent! Thanks!

Is there anyone in the house who plans to post before I do? I'll schedule a mod post for tomorrow or friday.
By the way, @BlackCat and @Tricheus! How much of the potion did you give to Milo and Busker, respectively?

Assume the bottle of elixir held enough for about two mouthfuls.

My question is: is there any left in the bottle, and if so how much?
@ViolentViolet Actually I was just gonna say that they're essentially very fast, well-dressed zombies.

So, yeah. ^^; All general zombie-killing rules apply.
They see invisible things O_O

They don't see at all, technically.

Surely you guys know what they are and how to kill them? ;)
A passing glance around the room will reveal the following:

  • A seven-foot-tall werewolf with a disgustingly drippy hammer in each hand.
  • A prevailing stench of rotten flesh.
  • Bits of bone and rotten puss all over the room and probably in your hair.
  • A headless corpse of a Salvager lying among more puss and bone fragments.
  • A Salvager standing with a captured Milo.
  • Another Salvager whipping about very quickly and murderously with many needles.
  • Gharlyc standing over Busker (who is in fact recovering) and Wink (who is in shock).
  • Everything crashing off the walls, bottles breaking, walls quivering.
  • A purple glowing Kitsune.

Personally I think the Kitsune is a little bit overkill. The seven-foot werewolf with skull-smasher hammers already takes up half the tavern. So, of course, now that you've gone and done it, I have to naturally provide an equal and opposite reaction. ;)
No one gets off easy, guys. C'mon now. ;)
The Dagger Salvager
Goal: To confiscate Edward's hand-cannon

The Salvager halted in the middle of the room as its way was blocked by Jargo's twisting and circling admiration. It waited there, still and silent as a tree, while Jargo stared into the reflection of the Salvager's mask. When Jargo had bounded merrily away, the Salvager continued undisturbed on its original course, a gloved hand stretched out to take Edward's ingenious hand-cannon.

“Varlet! Tell your gods that Ealdwine sent you to Hell!”
Ealdwine

The Salvager did not raise its weapon, nor did it show any indication of tension or alarm. It only raised its masked head, and faced Ealdwine just as the bard's rapier drove deep into the Salvager's chest.

There was no blood. The Salvager did not flinch, even as the tip of the rapier thrust out its back. Again, bloodless.

The Salvager suddenly grabbed Ealdwine's sword-arm with an iron grip and swung the bard forcefully against the stones of the burning hearth.

At the same moment, Fate appeared behind the Salvager and slammed its head between her monstrous hammers.

A ghastly, wet sound of smashing bone filled the room -- and so did the stench of rotting flesh. It was as if Fate had broken a rotten egg.

Bits of bone and brackish ooze flew across the room -- and still there was not a drop of red blood, nor of any living flesh. The golden mask clattered to the floor, and the cold, suddenly limp body crumpled after it, no longer a danger.

At this moment, Fade completed her blood pact with Milo and vanished once more.

The Scimitar Salvager
Goal: To capture Milo

Fade appeared above the Salvager, and like a spider she dropped upon it. The Salvager did not defend or attempt to stop her attack, but appeared to be dead the moment its back hit the floor; a dagger in the Drow's grip drove deep, again and again, into the Salvager's motionless body. There was no blood -- not even a drop. The dagger stabbed and stabbed and caused nothing more than clean holes in the Salvager's white cloth. Thinking her work finished, Fade moved on to conduct a blood ritual with Milo, abandoning her victim.

The Salvager seemed very much cold and dead when Gharlyc descended upon it, groping and searching for the precious elixir. The dwarf found it among the folds of cloth and dashed away to administer the potion to Busker, who was very much near the brink of death.

The Salvager sat up, then crawled to its feet, the scimitar held firmly in its gloved hand. It was unharmed, save for the clean slashes in its garb.

The Salvager leaped over a bench and dropped behind Milo; with an unexpected swiftness it clamped a gloved hand over her mouth and pressed her back against its cold, unbreathing chest.

The Needle Salvager
Goal: To capture Fade

Thanks to Teldryen's spell, the Salvager was paralyzed midway through the act of readying another needle, and it stood like a statue in this pose, not even breathing at all.

Pallas found the bottle of elixir hidden inside a fold of the Salvager's clothing, and handed it to Milo's summoned demon. While the demon administered the elixir, and while Milo began to revive, Pallas drove her sword into the paralyzed Salvager.

Her blade poked clean holes through the Salvager's chest -- there was no blood, nor any sign that the statuesque Salvager was in any distress at all.

And then, the paralysis wore off.

Immediately, the Salvager's hand flicked and a needle struck Pallas in the abdomen. With great speed, the Salvager immediately gripped a needle in one fist and slashed at her throat, aiming for the kill.

Almost at the same time, another needle flashed through the air and struck Fade in the chest, driving deep and sharp.
