History

Life Before The Apocalypse Mercurial, the eldest child of Belladonna and Javier Crypt, has always had a perhaps peculiar obsession with psychopaths and the dead. While her mother's area of interest was more with dark magic, and her father was cursed by the Aztecs, Mercurial's childhood heroes were Lizzie Borden and Jane Toppan. Her drawings horrified her teachers, especially when she depicted a many times great-grandmother being burned at the stake for witchcraft. And let's not even talk about the one time she went to summer camp...

Needless to say, Mercurial fit in rather well with the Crypt family. Playing Wake the Dead and with her electric chair were childhood hobbies of her that she has carried into adulthood. In fact, according to certain reports on file with the Seattle PD, Mercurial is suspecting as being behind a string of homicides occurring in 2011. Of course, there's no evidence behind that. She isn't sloppy with her work.

Most girls of her age would have left home already, and Mercurial is contemplating the idea. However, she is content for now to continue sleeping in her childhood coffin. There truly isn't anywhere else for her to go where she'll be accepted, a fact that Mercurial realizes. And the last institutions for trained killers-- the only decent ones in her opinion -- were already shut down.

Life Leading Up To the Apocalypse // What Brings You to Altsoba As mentioned before, Mercurial doesn't have much of a reason to leave Altsoba. She can find her parents to be suffocating and downright disgusting, but all loving parents want their children to die from asphyxiation one day. She understands it's merely the depth of her feelings. And beyond that, she does have a decent friend in town, a silly girl incarcerated for fourteen homicides. She can't just leave Jaina behind without slipping the girl a razor blade, now can she? That'd be awfully rude.

Personality: "On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the Constitution, my community, and the agency I serve."

That's the oath Keenan took when he joined the force back in his early twenties, and it continues to serve as an excellent descriptor of his personality. He will never give up on fighting for what he believes is right, even if it might bring him serious harm. Death is always an option for him, as long as justice is served, as long as wrongs are righted. If a shortcut has to be taken to get justice made, a deviation from the law, that's fine by him--as long as his conscience is clean at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

His drive is his undoing as well. Quick to dedicate himself to a cause, he will work himself to death, or at least, to the edge of it. He becomes reckless, rather than heroic. He becomes aloof and troubled, rather than relying on the help of friends and family. Keenan would rather take on the weight of the world than accept anyone's help.

History

History: Keenan was born in the south side of Boston. His father, an abusive alcoholic, was an arms dealer. He roped Keenan and his older brothers into helping to run his criminal empire from the moment they could walk. Empire is a bit of an exaggeration, of course--Keenan's dad was a nobody in a world of somebodies. The more his father failed at gaining power, the more violent he became. The violence only ended when in a rage, his father killed his younger brother, Patrick. CPS removed them from the home the next day.

Growing up in a foster home, Keenan fancied himself to be a champion of those who couldn't defend themselves--people like his brother. He got into plenty of fights, but they always had to do with him defending some moral principle. A cop with the Boston PD figured this out and poled some strings, getting Keenan accepted into the force as soon as he graduated high school. Keenan legally adopted his only younger sibling, his little sister, and served the public in the force until he was forty years old.

When he was forty, he responded to a call that changed his life. The things he saw--they changed him and his viewpoint on the world. He was one of the first agents recruited by O.M.E.N., due to the nightmares he had seen that night. He couldn't quite be a normal cop anymore.

History

The Reason You Chose The Side You Did: While Fitz grew up on Osiris, an Alliance planet, his parents never really instilled an adoration for the Alliance in him. However, they didn't give him any reason to favor the Browncoats either. He was raised to have a loyalty to science, and thus, a loyalty to whatever organization supported scientific research. It's only been rather recently that he left the university behind and sought out to gain new experiences, and he hasn't formed an opinion one way or the other just yet.

History: Fitz's parents were respected professors at the University of Osiris. His father taught maths and his mother specialized in chemical kinetics. Between the pair of them, there was always a great deal of pressure on Fitz from an early age to achieve something remarkable. He was the older in a pair of twins, as well as the only boy in the family, and his parents pushed him even harder for it.

While his twin sister always seemed to be naturally gifted when it came to math and science, Fitz was average by comparison. It didn't matter that he was a few years ahead in math--his parents expected more from him. Rather than being naturally gifted, Fitz had to work incredibly hard for years in order to perform just as well as his sister who seemed to understand the most complex systems effortlessly. Of course, it wasn't that his twin was more intelligent than he was--they just had different learning styles. Hers was auditory while his was more hands-on.

Fitz's hard work did pay off, after all, as he was accepted to the University of Osiris, originally intending to study cybernetics. But that never really was his interest, really being more of his sister's thing. He ended up studying electronics and engineering, learning about power systems and weapons. His determination and resilience saw him through schooling, allowing him to eventually earn his doctorate degree in engineering, and receive a research position at the university.

For a year, Fitz continued on in the safe bubble of the university, dabbling in various bits and parts of engineering. His nose had been stuck in a book for almost the entirety of the conflict with the Alliance and he had never left his home planet. One day, he woke up and instead of heading into his research lab, he got on a transport shuttle and headed for Newhope. He wants to see the world and he can't see it all from a lab desk.

Personality: Incredibly brave and loyal, Aravis never suffers from a shortage of courage. Before stowing away to the Caribbean, Aravis was arrogant and egotistical, looking down on those who were not high on the social ladder. Overtly prideful, this almost reckless pretentiousness toned down quite considerably throughout her journey. While she still is a bit prideful, she no longer is the entirely self-centered person she once was.

Aravis can also be incredibly manipulative, able to analyze a situation quickly and make the best moves needed. However, she only does this if she believes it is for the greater good, never trying to actively cause harm to anyone. Aravis has become more cautious and considerate towards the impact of her actions on others. She has, essentially, become a hero, willing to put her life on the line for others.

History

Family History: Aravis' father held a management position at one of the local factories in Bombay run by the East India Trading Company. He was high up on the chain--as far up as an Indian man could be in a British company--and enjoyed a relatively decent position on the social ladder. He converted to Christianity in order to win further favor with the Company and married a half English, half Indian woman named Abigayle. The pair had a son, Divyansh, and then a few years later, they had Aravis. Her mother died giving birth to Aravis.

Aravis' step-mother, Parvati, was a merchant's daughter and used to a life of wealth. Her previous husband had died under mysterious circumstances, with Parvati rumored to have aided in his demise. Nothing was ever confirmed, however. They enjoyed a relative status of the Upper Middle Class, but the status only existed in India. If they were to travel to other parts of the English Empire, they would be treated as members of the lower class.

Behind Your Name: Aravis, strictly speaking, is the name of a mountain range. Her mother had always dreamt of traveling to France and climbing the Pointe d'Areu, one of the peaks in the Aravis mountain range. While Aravis originally was going to be named after a Hindi goddess, when her mother died in childbirth, her father gave her the name Aravis to honor her mother's memory. Tyra, while an Indian name, refers to a Scandinavian God of Battle and War.

History: Aravis was born on the Isle of Bombay, territory legally given to the East India Trading Company by the King of England. The Bombay presidency had been in England's possession since 1661, and became the Company's western headquarters in 1687. By the time Aravis was barely one year old, the factory had been well established on the island, and her father remarried after her mother's death.

Her childhood was relatively pleasant, during a so-called Golden Age for the Company in Bombay. She spent her time with her good friend, Lauressa, often playing at a nearby lake. And while Lauressa enjoyed gossiping and dreaming of marriage, Aravis would snap branches off of trees and pretend they were swords. She begged her brother, Divyansh, to teach her. He taught her a few basics, before leaving with the Company on a voyage, and perishing at sea.

It was a world where women were expected to be objects and where slavery was commonplace. For the most part, Aravis was unhindered by both of those aspects. That changed when her step-mother made plans to marry Aravis off at the tender age of thirteen to a man nearly fifty years her elder. Horrified and repulsed, Aravis demanded that her father stop the marriage, but he refused. She found no help from her family or her dear friend, who was more jealous that Aravis had already found a match, and she made a plan to end her own life. She saw no other way out.

In the middle of the night, Aravis made her way to the lake she had played by as a child. Determined to fill her pockets with stones, she believed that she saw her brother's reflection in the water, asking his sister to relent. Seeing him, whether it was real or illusion, inspired an idea in Aravis. There was nothing for her in Bombay--but ships left for locations all over the world each day.

Determined to escape, she disguised herself as a boy and stowed away on a ship. The Captain of the ship eventually caught her, but failing to see past her disguise, instead gave her ten lashes for stowing away. She exchanged services in order to remain on the ship and worked hard at menial tasks, such as mending clothing or scrubbing the deck.

Aravis eventually found passage all the way to Tortuga, where she finds the means to get through the day by thievery. While she dreams of traveling and adventure, surviving to see the next day is her primary goal. She can hardly afford a place to sleep, but to her, it's worth it. The Caribbean has more to offer her than an arranged marriage in Bombay ever could.

Personality: With Harley Quinn for a mother, given how loud and outspoken the crazed woman is, Folly developed a more muted personality. The attempt on her life by the Joker only further scarred her, causing Folly to become ever the more quiet, her words hardly above a whisper. This is only partially due to that trauma, of course, with the increased silence serving as one of Folly's coping mechanisms. The event has left her mind wounded in more than one way as well, with Folly beginning to notice herself losing her grip on reality ever so slightly, driving her into a panic. On occasion, she hears voices.

But beyond all of the tragedy from that trauma, Folly is a quite talented young woman. She is incredibly creative, enjoying stories and imagining other possibilities. Whether it be math or English, Folly excels at it. She can excel at mostly anything, as long as she can keep her wits about her.

History

Folly was born in Arkham Asylum. Her mother, best known as the infamous Harley Quinn, had been handcuffed to a bed when Folly vacated the womb. Despite the pleading of the staff to give her daughter a normal name, something mundane like Lucy, Harley insisted on naming the girl Folly. One of the orderlies slapped on Jane as a middle name, in hopes of making a normal life more possible for the child. Child protective services then seized Folly, unable to determine a father. Doctors ran tests on the child, noting that her immune system was peculiar, and hypothesized it was an effect of the acid her mother had bathed in years prior.

No one in the Quinzel family wanted Folly, however. The tabloids and the papers were labeling her as the daughter of the Joker, despite a lack of evidence. Folly was thus placed in a foster home, and remained, bounced from place to place till the age of three. Only other criminals ever placed an interest in adopting the child, and with the heavy scrutiny over Folly, they never succeeded. At the age of four, her mother was released from Arkham, carrying a clean bill of health. She took back custody of Folly, and the pair of them moved to New York, living in an apartment on Coney Island. Her "aunt" Poison Ivy would drop by quite often, but Folly wasn't exposed to the criminal lifestyle many expected.

At the age of fourteen, however, her relatively quiet life was interrupted. The Joker broke into their apartment, intent on killing her mother. Folly had been out at school, and by the time she came home, her mother had donned her old Jester costume, and informed Folly they were moving to Gotham. The Joker took an interest in Folly, attempting to train her to be a criminal.

And while they did stay in Gotham for a few months with the Joker, it was short lived. One of the Joker's schemes went awry and her mother had been landed back in Arkham. Furious and filled with rage, the Joker slit her throat, in a manner that hardly kept her alive. He left Folly to bleed out, only for the Gotham Bat to rescue her. She spent a good few weeks in Gotham City Hospital, and while her mother's instructions named Dr. Pamela Isley as her guardian, millionaire Bruce Wayne decided to take Folly in as his ward. She figured that he did it for the publicity, to improve his public image.

Folly had some issues, of course, with all of the public attention she received. Uncomfortable with the gigantic scar on her neck and unable to visit her mother, the chance to enroll at Wayne High was perfect for her. It would allow her to see her mother, but also be around other students like her. People who wouldn't care who her father may or may not have been.

History

History: Folly's parents belong to a traveling circus, though they mainly stay on the east coast of the United States. Her father, Boris, was billed as a magician, while her mother, Fiodora, was a contortionist in the sideshow. Instead of growing up with normal children and attending school, Folly was raised in the circus community. Her best friend was the son of the snake charmer, and she played with the twin daughters of one of the clowns as well. In total, there were around seven children traveling with the circus.

Folly's father wanted her to follow in his footsteps and become an illusionist as well. He woke her up at the crack of dawn each morning starting at age six, attempting to train her in his craft. It never took. She took after her mother in skill, but rather than wanting to be a contortionist, Folly dreamed of flying on the trapeze. It infuriated her father, but the acrobats of the circus began to train her, and while she wasn't even close to second string, she really took to it. By the time she was twelve, Folly had made second string, the youngest acrobat in the circus.

And while the entire circus treated each other like family, Folly's parents were not exactly the most stable. Her mother had fallen hopelessly in love with a psychotic and abusive alcoholic. She managed to keep Folly protected from it mostly, but she couldn't protect Folly entirely. Her father didn't work just for the circus--he was strong, and he sometimes hired himself out, in order to come up with extra cash. After one of those deals soured, Folly was the first thing Boris saw when he came home. He cut Folly's throat open and left her on the floor to bleed to death. It was a miracle that she survived. She was only thirteen.

It interrupted her performances, as few as they had been. The recovery was long and painful, but it only created a deep resentment for her father. Her mother took him back after a month. The police were never informed as to what exactly happened, so Boris faced no charges for attempted murder. The circus went by a policy of settling family matters within the family. It was only when Folly turned fourteen that her neck was fully healed, and that she had been cleared to once again fly on the trapeze.

Life Since We Last Saw Them

After the tragedy in Coventry at the end of 2016, Folly fled Cirque Anomaly. Everyone she cared about was dead and there was no point in trying to build something out of ash. She walked from Coventry to Salem and then hopped on the commuter rail to Boston. The charges against her had been dropped, but her experiences were slowly driving her mad. She stayed in various shelters for months, each night waking up in fits of rage. They were controllable until she moved to Cromwell House, having accepted some help from a cousin to get consistent accommodation.

Unspeakable horrors were soon to follow. Folly checked herself into Beth Israel Psychiatric Hospital, having realized the bottom she had sunk to. She was well aware of her healing factor at this point, yet it was a while until she realized that the medication simply couldn't work for her. Her system eliminated it as quickly as it was taken in. Folly ditched the hospital and went to the one place that might be able to help - Xavier's Institute. Some of the mutants there were able to stop her when the voices and the visions grew to be too much and she couldn't control herself, but she needed actual treatment. Professor Xavier recommended a psychiatric hospital where a former student of his worked, hopeful that their psychic ability would help them to treat Folly's psychosis.

The treatment helped - yet it was not effective. It only managed to keep her from becoming worse. She didn't get better. Those frustrations were expressed in letters to Marygold, her good friend from her time at the institute. When the weeks out of date newspapers were delivered to the facility and Folly learned of the attack on X-Mansion, she broke out of the facility and went to find her friends. She wanted to help them and knew that if she stayed at the facility, O.M.E.N. would come for her too.

For the past ten years, she has been fighting with the X-Men, the Brotherhood, and whatever mutants remain. Beast had managed to synthesize a drug to treat her psychosis, allowing her to remain stable. The drug is based off of Wolverine's DNA, but the valiant fighter perished two years ago. They were not able to recover his body and the remaining material is all used up. There's no medication left to keep her violent and mad tendencies in check. But she's one of the best fighters left - they need her. She's the only one who can take a bullet and shake it off.

As often as she can, she wears the beaten brown coat pictured in the photo, partnered with various weapons. On Earth, it seems to attract a bit of attention, so she swaps in her coat and traditional pirate gear for a billowing white shirt, capris, and firm shoes. The hat, of course, is mandatory. And let's not forget the hook instead of a left hand. It's rather charming, really.

The difference between good and evil doesn't bother her, as she follows her own moral compass in order to determine right from wrong. However, Harlianne doesn't wish ill on the world. She isn't out for the pain of others. She's merely doing whatever it takes to survive, using her resourcefulness to solve any problem that comes across her. • O N C E U P O N A T I M E

To understand the story of Harlianne Hook, it is necessary to see how she came to be...The daughter of the sailors in the Royal Navy, Harlianne was orphaned. Her parents were sailing the Seven Seas on a long journey, giving birth to her along the way. They named her Harlianne James, after her mother's sister Harley and her father's sister Anne. When Harlianne was only three years old, catastrophe struck the ship. Boarded by pirates, her parents drew their last breaths in the ensuing conflict. The only child on board, Harlianne hid herself away inside of a barrel. The pirates looted all of the promising cargo, the barrel included, and abandoned the ship.

It was later, when they noticed someone had been stealing rations, that the pirates realized they had a stowaway. It was Harlianne, the daughter of Captain James and his wife. Rather than being cruel to her, the crew took a liking to the small child, seeing a pirate in the making. Too small to do more than grasp a hook, they endearingly nicknamed the child Harlianne Hook. The Captain of the ship adopted her, raising her to become a pirate.

She got her sea legs before she even walked on land, traveling the seven seas and seeing all of the wonderful sights and sounds. Her father and his crew taught her everything they knew, from fighting to aiming a pistol to steering a ship. They taught her how to determine a mark, how to navigate the seas, and how to use instruments such as a sexant. The sea and the Jolly Roger were her life, everything that she ever cared about. For the most part, Harlianne lived like a pirate, able to do whatever she wanted.

By the time Harlianne was thirteen years old, the young girl -- known as James Hook to those who would inquire, as sexism was still rampant in the Seven Seas -- had established a reputation for herself. Partially in order to keep this running joke going and to honor her birth parents, Harlianne shifted the surname James into her middle name, becoming Harlianne Jamie Hook. The running gag gave the crew of the Jolly Roger a fair deal of amusement. She went with the rest of the crew on their various jobs, helping to do whatever it was they were up to at the moment.

It was when Harlianne turned seventeen that her adoptive father was caught by the Royal Navy, after attempting to pull of a heist. He hanged in England, leaving the Jolly Roger to Harlianne. Taking control, she became known as Captain Hook. She ventured across the Seven Seas, doing her very best, and pulling off a number of heists. One of these, however, was rather unfortunate for the girl.

She had been stealing a bag of pixie dust from a witch, hoping to sell it for a pretty price at the nearest market. Rather than getting away scot free, the witch caught her. Amused by her name, the witch cut off Harlianne's left hand, replacing it with a hook. And in a sickening ritual, the witch cursed her. Whenever crocodiles were nearby her, they would pursue her relentlessly for the rest of her life.

It's hard not to develop a large fear of crocodiles like that.

However, that didn't stop Harlianne. She continued her voyages and her travels, getting rather good at spotting crocs and shooting them with her pistol. From time to time, she'd find herself in Neverland, plagued by a pesky brat named Peter Pan. Harlianne wasn't a villain, to be clear -- he merely just would get in her way, interrupting her pirate lifestyle.

Of course, among her travels on the Seven Seas, Harlianne inadvertently rescued a group of hostages. They had been attempting to flee Bellegarde and were taken prisoner. Harlianne just happened to be looting the boat they were on, allowing the hostages to go free. They wrote a song about her, about her heroics and kind attitude.

It still puzzles her.

• A N E W C H A P T E R

For some odd reason, Harlianne was among those privileged few who were able to travel to Earth. She suspects that the irritating chanty about her heroics has something to do with it. Fortunately, though, Mystvale does have some waters nearby, and Harlianne tends to head over them to sail as much as she can. Lake Washington is her favorite, of course.

However, she's also a bit self conscious, surrounded by knights and queens and, well, heroes. She doesn't see herself as being one of them, causing a bit of isolation. That and they seem to be rather irritated if she ever steals their property. The legends of the world were rather amusing as well, seemingly picking up on the long running gag that she was a man, and not, in fact a woman.

Oh well. At least she was free--free to find a way back to the Jolly Roger and to the Seven Seas, a place she truly called home.

History

Family History: Her father was a English Navy officer who came from a long line of military men. His father before him had been a commodore and his brother was a member of the armed forces, stationed in Virginia, one of the English colonies in North America. Her mother was the daughter of Christopher Monck, the Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica from 1687-1688. He was the Duke of Albemarle and with no other surviving children, her mother, Lady Elizabeth Arabella Catherine Monck, became the Duchess of Albemarle in 1688.

Behind Your Name: Harlianne's name was her mother's creation. Her first name is to honor Lady Elizabeth's childhood friend who died of yellow fever, Anne Harley. While Anne means Favor or Grace, Harley means From the Hare's Meadow. Her first middle name, Elizabeth, is after her mother. It means God of Plenty. Her second middle name, Winnifred, is after her father's mother, and means Reconciled or Blessed.

History Harlianne James was born in Port Royal during its English occupancy, when five forts defended the port. Two years later in 1692, a massive Earthquake struck Port Royal, practically decimating the settlement. The disaster was speculated to be brought on by the wrath of God, perhaps as punishment for only outlawing piracy in the colony in 1687. Either way, Harlianne's parents perished as part of the settlement collapsed into the sea. The young girl survived by a miracle, as her nurse had stashed her away on a boat, allowing her to survive as the island partially collapsed.

Her small vessel, of course, meant she was alone for a full day. Pirates had come to loot the wreckage of Port Royal, and instead, they found the young girl in a boat, all alone. Her family crest was on her clothing, allowing the pirates to identify the infant by her Christian name. They took the child in, initially intending to hold her for ransom, but realized that her small size could be advantageous. Not only would the English government consent to sending in regular payments to ensure the wellbeing of the young Duchess of Albemarle, but a small kid would be good for thievery, crawling into spots that others couldn't.

She grew up aboard pirate vessels, getting her sea legs properly before she could really talk. The crew became her family and raised her as best as they could, teaching her the tricks of the trade, and ensuring that she'd never go hungry. It was an incredibly different upbringing than what her parents imagined for her. By the time she made it to adulthood, she was sailing under Calico Jack, working with famous pirates such as Anne Bonny. Unlike most of society, pirates didn't care what was between your legs--her sex didn't hold her back.

Two months ago, Harlianne acquired a vessel all of her own, and named it the Bellona. She has been branded physically as a pirate, with most English officers knowing her as Mad Eyes, and clueless as to her parentage. At any rate, she's aiming to make a name for herself as a captain, starting with completing the run for Mr. Alucard.

History

The Reason You Chose The Side You Did: Jaina didn't neccessarily choose a side, but she didn't protest when one was selected for her. She grew up in a family that supported the Empire, with her siblings laying down their lives for it in service. Her twin brother was an Emperor's Hand. If anything, she lived in a house filled with Imperial propaganda. After her brother pulled some strings to get her out of the asylum, it was easiest for him to simply insert her into the Imperial war machine with her skills. It'd allow him to keep an eye on her. And given that Jaina doesn't really care about the Empire-Republic conflict, she hardly protested.

History: Jaina was the youngest child of the Sarbye family, with several older siblings, as well as a twin brother, Jacen. Growing up on Courscant, their parents tended to support the Empire, with Jacen and Jaina's older siblings all eventually joining the Imperial forces in one way or another. The twins enjoyed a relative life of luxury, until stormtroopers arrived at their home. Jacen was force sensitive and would be trained as an Emperor's Hand. Due to the relative influence of the family, Jacen would be able to remain and live at home, being trained during the workday.

It was then that Jaina's life took a sharp turn for the worst. Her brother, fascinated by the abilities he was learning to control, used his twin sister as practice. He had a particular interest in seeing if he could cure her of her mundane-ness, and trigger powers in her as well. It never succeeded, as she wasn't force sensitive. Instead, the repeated delving into her mind caused Jaina to lose her grip on reality. By the time their parents realized what Jacen did to Jaina, it was far too late. The shy girl became twisted, losing a grip on the notion of life and death. They became just words to her. She never seemed to grow upset or angry anymore, constantly laughing and smiling, giving Jaina the name the Joker.

Of course, craziness doesn't contain itself easily. She left the house eventually, heading for the capital city, for reasons even Jaina didn't understand. While there, Jaina managed to get a slight grip on her sanity -- but even then, it wasn't much. Getting caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, Jaina eventually found that her specific skill set had certain uses. For a variety of reasons that changed with her each and every whim, she ended up working as a Bounty Hunter, finding undesirables in society. Her career only furthered her dementia, culminating in her arrest when she hijacked and crashed a transport shuttle in order to get her mark. Due to her family's wealth, she had a top notch attorney, and was sent to an asylum.

Her brother completed his training as an Emperor's Hand, and perhaps out of pity, managed to retrieve Jaina from the asylum. He fixed her up with a position within the Empire, working as a Bounty Hunter once more. Jaina's lack of fear and understanding made her an asset in terms of keeping things secret, as well as tracking down some of the more nefarious targets. However, each week Jaina must attend a session with a doctor, otherwise, she'll be sent back to the asylum. It's the deal Jacen had to make to get her out of there.

History

The Basics: Jaina was the youngest child of the Sarbye family, with several older siblings, as well as a twin brother, Jacen. They were a military family primarily, with every family member going into some form of service. They had sisters in the navy, brothers in the army, and a sister in the air force. It was family tradition. But the twins, neither of them wanted to join the military. They went through JROTC like the rest of the family, but when it came time for graduation, Jacen turned down an offer to become a Navy Nuke and went to Harvard to study neuroscience. Jaina, meanwhile, vanished.

She had run off and joined a primarily Russian circus. Sweet and a little bit shy, the circus helped to coax her out of her shell. And while it didn't happen overnight, she eventually made it as a first string acrobat, performing for crowds (primarily of small children) as they traveled the continental United States. The circus became her family, but a second string acrobat was jealous of Jaina's success. They loosened the riggings during her act, intending to humiliate Jaina and cause her to lose her spot--but the safety net hadn't been tested in years. When Jaina crashed into it, it broke, and she fell.

While she survived, she sustained brain damage at the young age of twenty eight. Her brother, now a doctor in experimental neuropsychology, tried his best to take care of his sister. He administered electroshock therapy to her, in order to help her regain what she had lost--and he was successful. Too successful. The brain damage was vanquished, her sanity along with it.

She now resides in Justice Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Her actions had culminated in a charge of second degree murder, though she was acquitted due to a mistrial. They couldn't put her in prison, but it was clear her sanity wasn't there--and so, it was the asylum for her.

History

Your First Walker Encounter: Édouard was at the World of Coca-Cola Museum, enjoying himself and struggling to read the signs. He had been trying to get someone to translate for him, not realizing he had been bothering other tourists and not employees. Eventually, someone did him the kindness to come over to him, but he noticed there was something...wrong...with the man. The man lunged at Édouard, attempting to bite him, only for Édouard's bodyguard to shove at the walker. The walker fell over the safety rails and landed in a large vat of Coca-Cola syrup.

History Before Outbreak: Édouard enjoyed a relatively comfortable life in Southeastern France, living not too far from Italy. His parents were involved in la mafia française, trafficking all sorts of illicit goods. The youngest in the family with two older sisters, Édouard enjoyed all of the riches from the trade. He was given his own bodyguard and was taken care of by a household of servants and staff. The lifestyle he enjoyed earned him the nickname Joli Garçon, meaning Pretty Boy.

Édouard wasn't truly cut out for organized crime. Preferring parties and fine clothing to threats and underground networking, his parents groomed his sisters for running the business, and doted on leur petit prince. After protesting being taken to school, his parents gave in and allowed him to have private tutors. These tutors hardly stood up for themselves, only teaching Édouard subjects that he was interested in. Consequently, while he became fluent in Italian, he never learned to speak English.

His diva phase shifted into a bit of a rebellious one by the time he was 17, with Édouard getting multiple tattoos and piercings. He shunned the more flamboyant pleasures and began to dress comme un gothique. Hoping that they would be able to redirect his attention towards the family business, his parents began to make arrangements to send him to college to learn business. Those skills, they hoped, would help him eventually take over, much to his sisters' annoyance.

And while he did attend college, he mostly went there for experiences. He attempted to drop out on several occasions, only to be found learning how to "swashbuckle" in Cyprus. Frustrating his parents to no end, Édouard threw away a small fortune on unneeded items, such as buying a car, only to "lose it" the next day. From this, he became leur panier percé, known in English as a spendthrift.

At age twenty, Édouard told his parents he was going to America to find himself that summer. They gave a very weak protest, but he went off anyways. On his tour, he picked up very basic English, such as: "Toilet. Girl. Hungry. Where? Fuck off. Those few words and more helped him get around the country, along with his bodyguard and a guide book, written in French. Eventually, Édouard found himself in Georgia, and decided to spend his day at the World of Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta.

History Since Outbreak: Félix, his bodyguard, is the only reason Édouard has managed to survive. Félix had taken a romantic interest in the boy, safeguarding him from harm as much as he could. For a while, Édouard explored a relationship with him, eventually ending it when he realized that he was not, in fact, gay. However, every so often, his experimental mood comes over him once again. When he was traveling with Félix, this became a special sort of hell for his bodyguard.

The pair of them fled the Coca-Cola Museum after the encounter, running to the penthouse suite that Édouard had rented. Félix wanted to run, but Édouard had become accustomed to a certain standard of living, and turned his nose up at the idea of leaving the suite. He insisted that anything they needed to survive could be found at the very top, and instructed Félix to barricade all of the entrances. For a few months, this method seemed to be working--until Édouard let a walker into the apartment, assuming it was the cleaning lady.

Needless to say, after escaping that situation miraculously, Félix managed to convince Édouard to leave the penthouse. The pair of them packed up everything they had and went inside of Édouard convertible, always having the roof up, much to Édouard's dismay. The pair of them lived in that car for the next three years, with Félix taking them to small towns and teaching (with some success) Édouard how to survive without a butler. Édouard picked up some various skills, gradually becoming more independent, and learning to fend for himself.

The pair were in Georgia when Félix and Édouard attempted to raid a REI type of store for more supplies. While inside, walkers surrounded Félix, and Édouard ran in cowardice, leaving Félix to die. Ever since, Édouard has been struggling to survive without his bodyguard, lamenting his fate and all of the so-called "wrongs" that have been done to him. Fortunately, he remembered the basics of how to get by--though Édouard recognizes that if he doesn't find other people soon, he'd likely end up dead within a few more months.

History

Family History: Édouard's family is involved in organized crime, with the public appearance of being gentlemen in the gentry. They own vast amounts of property and enjoy a good deal of wealth, mostly derived from the drug trade. His father and mother had each been raised in the business. He has two older sisters, both of them ruthless and cunning, and hoping to gain control of La Fraternité du Sang. Their only obstacle is Édouard.

Behind Your Name: Édouard is a family name, meaning Wealthy Guardian.On his father's side, the eldest son was always named Édouard by tradition. His middle name, Gautier, is in honor of his mother's deceased brother and means Powerful Ruler. Neither of these descriptions are rather fitting for him, unfortunately.

History: Édouard enjoyed a relatively comfortable life in Southeastern France, living not too far from Italy. His parents were involved in la mafia française, trafficking all sorts of illicit goods. The youngest in the family with two older sisters, Édouard enjoyed all of the riches from the trade. He was given his own bodyguard and was taken care of by a household of servants and staff. The lifestyle he enjoyed earned him the nickname Joli Garçon, meaning Pretty Boy.

Édouard wasn't truly cut out for organized crime. Preferring parties and fine clothing to threats and underground networking, his parents groomed his sisters for running the business, and doted on leur petit prince instead. His parents tried in vain to educate him with private tutors, but those tutors hardly stood up for themselves and only taught Édouard subjects that he was interested in. Consequently, while he became fluent in Italian, he never learned to speak English.

His pampered life of luxury lent itself into a rebellious phase by the time he was 17, with Édouard getting multiple tattoos and piercings, in addition to his La Fraternité du Sang tattoo. He started to ask comme un gothique and his parents took this change positively, hoping to direct his attention towards the family business. They assigned him a small chapter to look over in Paris, hoping to groom him into taking over one day, much to his sisters' annoyance.

And while he did go to Paris, he fell in with another sort. He hired a man to teach him how to "swashbuckle" and threw away a small fortune on unneeded pleasures, as well as potentially fathering several illegitimate children. By the time he was twenty years old, Édouard was out of control and his parents were blind to it. His oldest sister, Alisanne, devised a plan. There were rumors of a flask containing ultimate power out in the Bermuda Triangle, and her little brother had always enjoyed the sea. She persuaded their parents to send Édouard to collect it and they agreed.

Why are you playing Sword Art Online? Kyasarin was crippled in an accident just before she moved from Japan to the United States. Confined to a wheel chair, Kyasarin struggled initially with English, and soon became the easy target at her new school. Playing Sword Art Online gave her a chance to escape from a life of torment, and another chance at being able to not just walk, but run. It gave her back her legs and a fresh start. As soon as she heard about the game, she was dying to try it, and her parents thought it wouldn't be too bad of an idea.

Life Prior to Playing Sword Art Online:
Kyasarin was born to Fukuzawa Ayumi and Sayuki Hiro. The two young lovers were budding and promising; Ayumi was the heiress to a major corporation and Hiro was a prominent animator. They only had two children: Kyasarin and Naegi. Naegi was the eldest by ten years, and was an overprotective brother from the very start. Naegi and Kyasarin grew up as the best of friends, playing in their gorgeous hometown of Nara, Japan.

Once Kyarasin was seven years old, however, her maternal grandfather passed away and Ayumi inherited his company. Given that the board was based in the United States, the family was uprooted to California, in order to be closer to the Silicon Valley. Prior to leaving, Kyasarin went with some of her friends into a few of the nearby temples, and they pretended they were powerful mages. It attracted the attention of a less than stable passerby, and it evolved into an actual fight. Kyasarin shoved the foe into the base of a grandiose statue, only to have it fall on her, crushing her legs. The bones were entirely shattered, and while she wasn't paralyzed, the bones were never able to properly heal.

Kyasarin was flown to California in a wheelchair. Arriving, the adjustment period was already challenging, due to the language barrier. Her education in English had been subpar at best, causing her to be isolated from her new peers. And given that she was stuck in a wheelchair, they quickly singled her out as a target. Her brother faced similar isolation, hiding in his room, and causing that relationship to end. Before he had even moved out for college, Kyasarin had already been living like an only child.

Her parents tried to do their best by her, taking her to various specialists in hope of finding someone who could fix her legs, but nothing would work. Not even the most expensive of procedures had any hope of giving her back the ability to walk. She spent her days holed up in her room, watching anime and reading manga, at least enjoying that it was something she could understand. Eventually, she would watch other shows on Netflix, learning English quickly from them.

However, nothing could be done about her social isolation.

Life Since Playing Sword Art Online: Being selected as a beta tester due to her parents' combined connections, Kyasarin used Sword Art Online as an escape. Her tough and callous demeanor she developed to protect herself from the ruthlessness of the kids at school translated over into the game, but with the ability to use her legs (virtually), it became more confidence. She relished her chances to log-in and play the game, constantly running from area to area, learning new skills. Realizing early on it was best to specialize almost in a mode of combat, Kyasarin started learning to incorporate her sword moves with the acrobatics she had quickly picked up. It was a second chance for her--she wasn't going to waste it.

Personality: To understand all about him, you need only be in the presence of his private collection of books. Any questions you ask about them or claims to be familiar are instantly brushed off, with him turning to the role of the teacher, whether or not you want to be his student. It is a bit demeaning, but he hardly expects much of anyone, especially when it comes to his specialized knowledge. He also would likely make a series of ever the more dramatic threats, as he doesn't trust anyone at all. Any damage to his books would be the end of the world, and as far as he's aware, letting anyone be unattended with one is inviting some sort of catastrophe. As much as he loves humanity, he dislikes and shows a lot of disdain for actual humans. He craves and celebrates each thought penned by societies old and current, but actual human interaction is a puzzle for him.

Of course, his social awkwardness can be incredibly amusing, though he wouldn't understand why. He tends to somehow put his foot in his mouth in an adorable manner, almost naive and innocent. His humor comes from his lack of awareness about it, and since many people don't tend to bother him, he hasn't had the chance to realize it. Anyone able to have an engaging discussion on a text with him is likely to receive his admiration, as he doesn't expect much of people--he hardly trusts his father, for example, to remember how to breathe. To him, he's playing the Sims, and everyone else is useless and in need of his help. He's a bit of a narcissist for it, but he has good intentions. History

Life Before The Apocalypse Howard was born to Benedict and Josefina Brighton. Benedict had been a missionary in his youth and met Josefina through his work, bringing her back with him to the United States. The pair of them married and settled down to a quiet life in Altsoba, Washington, where Benedict worked as a school guidance counselor, having ended his previous career. Five years later, Josefina gave birth to their first and only child, naming him Howard after Benedict's father and Lucas after Josefina's father.

Howard grew up in a house filled with the relics and souvenirs from Benedict and Josefina's travels. They amazed him to no end, inspiring him to look into other cultures. It caused him to quickly become discontent with the small town of Altsoba, as the most diverse thing in town was the various types of cows. He dreamt of studying in Spain, Portugal, China, Iran...And in hopes of being able to achieve this, Howard studied as hard as he could in school, taking as many social studies courses as he could in order to secure a scholarship. The other students in school bullied him greatly for this, beating him up after class, so Howard began to study boxing in an effort to defend himself.

While he was not awarded a scholarship, he was able to attend NYU for college, calling the city of New York his home for the next four years. He majored in archaeology, allowing him to be shipped off to various countries for his studies, and experience new cultures. Upon realizing cultures were what fascinated him, Howard attended Columbia University for his masters, studying anthropology. He focused on the development of cultures and their myths, of the stories they told their children to frighten them at night.

Howard graduated from Columbia with honors and spent the next few years traveling the world, working for various companies, and living his dream. However, when his parents were killed in a car crash, he had to return to Altsoba in order to settle his parents' affairs. He ended up moving into his childhood home and struggled to find more job opportunities, settling to teach at a community college and attempt to turn his hobby of collecting rare texts into something of a business.

Life Leading Up To the Apocalypse // What Brings You to Altsoba Despite hating it in Altsoba, Howard hasn't managed to leave after moving back in a few years ago. There aren't any jobs available elsewhere, and as much as he hates it there, he needs to be able to afford food. However, the rumors of the apocalypse were the best thing to ever happen to the town, in his opinion. All of the mythos of the end of the world had been recorded in every society he ever studied, and the prospect of getting a front row seat at the show excited him to no end.

Of course, that was if the entire apocalypse thing was real--he wasn't too convinced that it was.
