@Mercenary Lord, The High Island could crush all of his rivals in seconds, the High Electric could vaporise them, the High Venom could unleash a horrid, genetically targeted rotting sickness, and the High Prescient would see it coming from a year off at least. Mutually Assured Destruction keeps them all in check. They all like ruling, and they're all smart enough to know a showdown wouldn't leave much left to rule.

Darwin is famous for coming up with Natural Selection and all that.
It's considered Natural Selection for someone to do something incredibly stupid and get severely hurt / killed from it. Thus not being able to pass along their genes, which is what Natural Selection is all about. The Brightest / Strongest survive. The Weak / Stupid (generally) die and thus those poor genes stay out of the gene pool for passing on to descendants.
