@Zeroth Thanks for all the extra information! I've been thinking about it more, and I feel like my character concept is really coming together now. I'll get a sheet together when the OOC goes up.
@Zeroth I think that works pretty well as an outline for magic. With the comparison to math, knowing a lot of different very powerful spells shouldn't be possible. It should take some specialization to understand a higher tier spell.
Are there any magic relics or ruins? I'm not asking you to spoil the story, of course. But one of my ideas was about a researcher who was assigned by the academy to study a magical relic (perhaps a rod or puzzle box), but who failed to comprehend its secrets in time to make any difference.
It's definitely possible to do a similar sort of thing with formulae and knowledge instead, but I thought I'd see what you think.
Sarah was still breathing hard. The fight was coming to a close, but her heart-rate was still going wild. 'I know I really pushed myself against those soldiers, but I should have plenty of-' she tried to rise to her feet, and was unsuccessful. The world swooned and sparkled, and the strength left her legs, leaving her on the ground again. 'I guess not...' Perhaps overusing the partial transformation had strained her limited human physiology.
The power rangers were all gathering around her now. They were her ostensibly her targets, and she had planned for more than one scenario in which this meeting ended in an exchange of blows. But just then, gasping on the ground, it didn't look like she'd be able to mount any defense, in the worst case. In fact, she was growing increasingly faint - would she even get the chance to speak with them?
She suddenly lurched up again, grabbing onto Ven for stability. "Forget about the velcons! What did you people do to him?" she asked in a shaky voice. "What did you do with my brother?!" But with that outburst, the light seemed to leave her eyes, and she slumped back to the ground, unconscious. The great black claw shriveled back down into a pale human arm, leaving Sarah looking rather defenseless. A pretty gnarly bruise was visible beneath her t-shirt, too. She had been brave before, but it seemed that the fearsome conflict had taken its toll on her. All around, the park was in partial ruins, too, and the sound of police sirens still wailed in the distance.
Posting interest. I always have a good time with action and fantasy writing. The reversion genre hasn’t been a huge point of interest for me in the past, but the themes of important memories and second chances seems really promising.
I like magic, but don’t need it to get interested. I’m just weighing some options. Perhaps a bumbling sorcerer’s apprentice in the first life, or a failed military commander? I also like the idea of a big personal tragedy that they’ll try to avert this time, like loss of a partner or friend. I mean, of course everyone died in the end; this would have been a smaller, earlier incident that scarred the character’s psyche.
General Knowledge Success (rolled 11) An old memory comes back to the surface for Joséphine. She remembers hearing about Loudon before, when she was still a child. It was one of those big family get-togethers, and she was terribly bored at the time. She had listened to one of her aunts tell a strange story to a bunch of adults at another table. The woman was talking about a mother or grandmother of the family, and how she had at one time carried the reputation of a witch. It was untrue, of course, and was probably brought about by more or less understandable eccentricities. "But people still remember the trouble we stirred up during the Loudon affair." That's what her aunt had said. This elicited a round of laughter from her friends, but the young Joséphine did not understand. How odd that she only remembered that now.

The night proved to be more eventful than the group of inheritors would have wanted, but somehow they made it through till morning. Naturally, they were less inclined to relax at the hotel grounds after the unpleasant occurrences, so they made their way to Monsieur Herbachet's office early.
Even before you turn the street corner you can hear the sound of an insistent knocking and someone complaining. Approaching more closely the weathered building, it appeared to be Sœur Valérie - the darkly clad woman from yesterday. "Monsieur? Monsieur! What is the meaning of this, Monsieur?" she knocked loudly on the door again. It was strange to see a woman like her making such a scene. Indeed, a bystander or two had gathered to watch. Then again, the office had been very inviting before - why would the notary have locked out his honored guest?
Stranger still, the plaque with his name that had marked the doorway before was now gone. Taking note of your presence, sister Valérie gives it a rest and addresses you. "It's a case of fraud after all. Isn't that what it looks like? And after making me stay in that hovel last night- I'm furious!" This was quickly turning into a real scandal. But there would be no easy solutions.
A few minutes later, a different man would open the door. He was a large person with overgrown black hair and a shabby suit. "Why are you causing such a din on my doorstep?!" he demanded. There was a moment of confusion, but Valérie explained that there was an urgent need to see the notary in office.
"Herbachet? You won't find him here anymore. His moving crew kept me up half the night." Seeing the bystanders and the general distress of the group, he briefly invited everyone in. The crowded, dim office from yesterday was unrecognizable now. Everything was gone - the man's desk, his bookshelves, tables, and even that distinctive large rug had all vanished. The room was barren.
"The gentleman only rented the room for a month. His term had come to an end," the burly fellow explained.
"Oh, but that's unconscionable! He had unfinished business with us - we really must see him."
The man had calmed down now, and he did seem somewhat sympathetic to her situation. "Well, he only left for the railway station this morning. You might be able to catch him if you hurry," he suggested with a shrug.
Shared glances were had all around - it was clear what had to be done. "Let's talk while we walk. I don't intend to let that funny little man squirm out of this."

The railway station was located to the east, just outside of town - so everyone headed there in a hurry, discussing what to do and say when they found Herbachet. The distinctive low, mechanical rumble of train engines grew louder as they progressed, and soon the large industrial building cut into view ahead. But just as they reached the edge of the city, something unbelievable happened. An unnatural terror overcame everyone in the group, ripping away their petty thoughts of retribution and throwing them in extremis.
There is a sharp pain at your chest, and suddenly the strained pumping of blood is all you can hear. The morning light turns dazzlingly sharp and you feel awfully ill, unable to even put one foot in front of the other. What in the world was going on?- a heart attack?! There was no obvious cause, but you really feel that you may be about to die on the spot. Finally the dread seems to pass, and the world slowly comes back into it's usual focus.
Valérie was trying to pick herself up off the ground, choking and coughing. "Daphne... oh, Daphne..." she mumbled. Nobody was quite themselves until they'd had a moment to recover. There seemed to be no lasting injury, but as soon as you try to head to the railway station again, the intense discomfort resumes. You are exactly at the historical perimeter of Loudon, where a great stone wall once encircled the town. Even after centuries, pieces of it are in ruins nearby. You don't understand why, but this ancient landmark acts as a real barrier to you now. You won't be able to pass it without serious risk.
The catholic woman was clearly very shaken by all this. "I've never felt something like that before. I don't understand this. What should we do?"
I'm very happy to have your interest. I am still looking for more, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I've only really prepared for one more main role, but I could potentially work in additional characters if I really like them.
I've not actually seen the film, but thanks for the reference - that may be a great piece to look into for additional inspiration.
I recently started an occult horror game here. Currently it's myself and three other players, but we could use one more person in the mix. My first advertisement was a bit overwhelming, so I'm just going to keep things simple here.
The setting for the game is 1901 France, in a town called Loudon. Loudon is famed for a series of high profile possessions that took place in the 1600s, leading to a series of witch trials which would see a bishop named Urbain Grandier burned at the stake. But our characters have been invited to town due to an unexpected inheritance dispute. Things are not as they seem in Loudon, however, and they will have to struggle to keep their lives - not to mention their souls - intact.
I've adapted the story from an old french adventure book that I translated. According to the book's directions, I do a tarot drawing for each character than can affect his stats. We also will use an occasional die roll to resolve tricky situations, but roleplaying is the primary focus.
This is a strongly occult game. It makes use of traditional ideas about witchcraft for its magic system, and draws heavily from Christian and sometimes pagan folklore. You can expect demons, witches, ghosts, etc alongside the radical new technologies and social transformations of the fin de siecle.
I definitely think it would be better to have one thread with all rolls than have multiple threads for one RP, that seems a bit pointless to me
I agree. However, Roleplayerguild does not seem to offer that functionality. I've decided to open a discord server for us to do rolls in. Feel free to join and roll there instead. I'll also accept the on-site method of dice rolling if someone prefers that.
I don't have any controls for permissions, so I assume that is the case. I guess I should have each of you make a dice thread and link it to me. I may still make some rolls for you in public or private as appropriate.
