Make it clear that you don't need him to be reading Dante tomorrow. Also suggest it would be fun if you had a private language that you could use to mock English speakers in secret.

Rene observed the by play between the Syshin and the Kalderi with concealed interest. Intelligent aliens were rare in the portions of the galaxy that humans had explored and, as a general rule, they differed so dramatically in habitat, biology and outlook that interactions between them were rarer still. An academic part of his mind recognized that there might not be many humans that had ever witnessed a discussion between two other aliens.

“Some Kalderi weave,” Kel’shaiel responded with a flattening of her mouth parts which Rene took to be a smile.

“It is a meditative practice among our people, if you can provide us with a description of what would be appropriate, it can be procured for you,” the Kalderi said with a slight bow. Fortunately for Rene his dress uniform was both appropriate and the attire dictated by Imperial custom.

“What can we expect at the ball,” Rene asked. The situation required he leave most of the talking to Solae as the trained diplomat, but it was possible to use his position and the stereotype of the bluff soldier to ask questions more directly and with more ignorant than was desired for an ambassador. Kel’shaiel’s mouth parts furrowed into what might have either been thoughtfulness or concern.

“Herios Lithyll has assumed the role of trediyal for the Duchess,” Kel’shaiel replied although neirther herios nor trediyal meant anything to Rene. Kel’shaiel obviously recognised this and backtracked.

“Herios means leader, or elder, in your tongue,” she explained, in her oddly accented galactic.

“A trediyal is one who … expresses your point of view before the other herios,” the alien went on, making subtle gestures with her hands and wings that might have conveyed a subtext if Rene had enough knowledge to decode them. He avoided glancing at Solae for more information, certain that she would fill him in later if necessary.

“So he will ...take our side?” Rene asked, puzzled as to why an alien who knew nearly nothing of them would choose to side with them with so little information. Kel’shaiel nodded expressively.

“It is the way of our people, a trediyal will speak for you, and one of the other herios will act as pendiyal, and speak against you. The other herios will make up their minds and eventually there will be concord,” Kel’shaiel expounded.

“It sounds like a trial,” Rene observed, a little apprehensive about being involved in so formal a proceeding, but the alien was shaking her head.

“Among the Kalderi there must always be concord, all decisions, even purchasing food or deciding on clothing are approached this way.”

“What if Lithyll cannont convince the other herios or they don’t come to an agreement?” Rene asked. Kel’shaiel cocked her head for a moment clearly confused by the idea.

“There must always be concord,” she said, and Rene had the impression she was stating something that was too obvious to need to be spoken aloud. Solae nodded slightly in his peripheral vison, perhaps understanding more than he did so he let the point drop.

“Is there anything else we should be aware of?” he asked the alien. She paused and looked him up and down.

“You will need to bring a sword,” Kel’shaiel said as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. Ceremonial swords were not unknown within the Stellar Empire, there was even a version of the marine dress uniform that included one, though it usually reserved for those serving on a naval vessel. Somehow though Rene got the impression that wasn’t exactly what the Kalderi meant.

“Uhhh… why will I need a sword?” he asked politely. Kel’shaiel brows furrowed slightly but she was diplomatic enough to smooth the expression out within a second or two.

“Dances, even political ones, are a part of courtship and mating ritual,” she said in an almost professorial tone. Rene shared a side long glance at Solae, and though her face was impassive, he sensed she was equally confused.

“And that requires swords because….” he prompted. Kel’shaiel turned her toothy smile toward Solae.

“Males may challenge you for the right to mate with the Duchess Solae, and projectile weapons are prohibited in such contests,” Kel’shiel explained politely.

“I see,” Rene responded dryly, so much for enjoying a simple dance.
Junebug smirked at Neil taking the cup from his hands and setting it down on the table that was bolted to the deck beside the bed. It glowed for a moment as the integral magnets inlaid into the surface fastened the cup down so it wouldn't become a missile if the ship maneuvered hard enough to beat the artificial gravity.

"Well," she said, stretching out a heel to push the door shut with a click. Reaching down she unzipped her flight suit and pulled it down baring her shoulders and breasts. The owl tattoo on her shoulder stood out in the overhead light. The slight difference in tone where her skin had grown back after her diesel burns, the puckered flesh where bullet wounds had healed. She was acutely aware of the contrast she made to Indra with her perfect skin and holostar body. It made her feel like an ugly duckling. She climbed on top of Neil pinning him to the bed with her hips.

It had been a strain, acting calm throughout the elaborate public funeral, dealing with Indra's grief and quietly negotiating her way out of government service, all the while knowing that he was floating up there in the dark. Sure, in theory he was perfectly safe, but machines and people fucked up, and she had fucked up plenty of times. Other people had died for it after-all, why not Neil. She shoved him roughly down onto the bed ignoring his wince of discomfort before leaning in and kissing him passionately.

"Let's talk about that..."

"There is an exit on the south eastern wall," Taya replied, her tone apologetic.

"Sorry there is no video I can get into down here," she added as though she had something to appologize for in not being able to obtain real time imagery from a base in which the strike team was moving through at a run.

"Any one you walk away from," Junebug replied and headed towards the carrot that appeared on her helmet visor, pushing through the thick foliage to reach an armored doorway that formed part of the wall. It slid sideways at her touch and cool filtered air rushed into the tropical enclosure. The trio stepped hastily through into a hallway.

"Turn right the panic room is just around the corner," Taya instructed but Junebug was already moving towards the sound of rushing feet she turned the corner to see a man matching the description from the mission holo rushing towards her, eyes wide with panic. He tried to stop, tripped and pitched onto his face with a painful sounding crack. Junebug leveled her rifle at him as he scrambled to his feet raising his hands. She wondered what sort of filter Gregorious had used to make the man look dangerous. In the flesh he appeared to be a timid academic.

"Please," he begged, "this isn't what you think!" Junebug sighed.

"Yes, that is patently fucking obvious," she observed, then gave the fellow a regretful look.

"However, a deal is a deal."

"Wait! N.." Junebug shot Pradec through the breast bone, droping him to the floor. She said something in the strange hissing tongue of the hex then stepped forward and looked down at the body so that her helmet sensors had a good view of the scientist before putting a second round into his head.

"Well I guess that takes care of that," Neil said, his voice betraying no emotion.

"Neil watch your..." Junebug started to shout and then Neil's world exploded in a flash of white fire.

"He should be waking up," a voice sounded on the edge of Neil's consciousness. His eyes cracked open to find himself locked into the medical computer on the Highlander. Sayeeda breathed a sigh of relief to see him coming to. She wasn't wearing her armor, but was instead in her usual combination of a t-shirt and cam pants.

"Was I hit?" Neil asked, noticing that his head was covered in some sort of sticky gel like substance. Junebug looked embarassed.

"Ummm... in a manner of speaking," she admitted. Neil gave her a strange look before the world seemed to go monochrome for a second and Junebug flinched in the familiar discomfort of RIP entry.

"Wait what? Are we running?" Neil asked, struggling against the restraints of the machine. Junebug laid a comforting hand on his head.

"Give it a minute, the machine has to finish re-oxygenating your blood," she said apologetically. Neil glared at her.

"Ok, explain what the fuck is going on," he demanded. Junebug cleared her throat.

"Well it was technically part of the contract that you marry Indra," she explained. Contracts were very important to mercenaries and Junebug had never gone back on one.

"So I had Saxon hit you over the head while your back was turned," she explained, as though this cleared everything up.

"Right..." Neil prompted.

"I had my sensors pointed at Pradec so I didn't record but when I turned around it looked like, from the video feed, like you had been shot," she explained.

"Saxon carried you out of there and we set off a couple of charges to level the place so there was no chance of anyone finding a body. Taya doctored the feed from my helmet so you had no life signs when we turned it over to Gregorious," she went on.

"So why is my blood being reoxygentated?" he pressed.

"Ummm... well I couldn't risk them searching or scanning the Highlander and finding you so, I put you in one of the stasis pods and shot you into space," she admitted. Neil could only stare.

"We picked you up right after your funeral," she added as though that made it all better.

"We should go and deploy the garrisons," she advised, stepping over the praetorian. She paused to reach down and pluck a pistol from the guards belt then thoughtfully replaced it with the one she had taken from the dead Vuldrock earlier. That would certainly confuse the man when he woke up but she doubted it would be his major concern. The Duke would be furious that his orders had been countermanded, but at least the city might survive. Orion could, after the fact, claim he was just following his instructions to defeat the pagans, though it was a think excuse at best.

The hall outside the library was empty for the moment but Annika wasn't sure which way to go to get out of the labyrinthine complex.

"This way," Ragnar declared decisively, gesturing down the hallway. Lacking better options Orion and Annika followed till they came to a small door. Although it probably wasn't locked Ragnar opened it with a kick that splintered its hinges and lead them through into a dark spiraling staircase. They raced down the stairs and as they descended the smell of roasting meat and industrial refigeration came up to greet them.

The reached the bottom and passed through a set of doors into a large kitchen in which cooks and their assistants were slaving over a hundred different meals. There was enough shouting and noise that at first they didn't notice the presence of strangers. Ragnar marched determinedly towards what looked to be loading doors at the far end of the vast kitchen. A small man, puffed up with his own importance stepped inforont of the Vuldrock.

"And just who do you think you are to..." the man whined cutting off abruptly as Ragnar swatted him with a mighty fist sending him spinning to the ground.

"How dare you speak to the Duke's representative like that!" Annika demanded in a furious voice. There was a moment of startled silence but then they were through the doors and out onto a loading bay where a large open backed truck was finishing a delivery. The low wall of the palace was visible in the distance as was a post with armed guards, though they didn't yet appear to be on alert.
There is a continuum. I don't even know what Naturo(sp) is so I wouldn't be comfortable writing in it. Similarly in some cases the setting is more set dressing than an integral part of the story. I can write a love story in 19th century Tahiti without needing to be an expert.
