Being truly on my own is a bit of a weird feeling. It's never really happened.

Let it never be said that sometimes extreme brevity isn't the most appropriate post, though. Everything is a tool.

As quickly as anyone else amongst the knights, Tyaethe drew her blade, though when the apparent enemy made no move to attack it dipped towards the floor. It was too late to save the fort's occupants and all that left them was the task of meting out justice--though as much as her emotions told her to strike out now and as itchy as she was to push the horse forward into battle, the mere step of raising doubts about their innocence was enough to force her to stop. Her vows wouldn't allow her to immediately brush concerns off.

Not without a direct and valid order.

Umbra had no such compunctions however, and neither did the rest of the knights, so the paladin could hardly fault her for doing the normal thing. It didn't work, which meant their mysterious aggressor was at least quick to respond to visible threats. Unfortunately, it made the diplomatic step of their current mission a lot more difficult.

"Then if you aren't responsible, put down your weapons until such time as our investigation of the fortress is complete. We cannot simply let those responsible for this slaughter go without reason," the fully-armoured knight said, "And if you will comply, I offer my protection so long as it remains necessary."

Even if her gut was telling her to stab them.
Mostly because at this stage, you'd be as good at ice magic as the actual ice magic specialist. Awkward. ;P
Already got an ice mage, too. Err... fire? Rocks? Wind? xD
Other girls came in, most likely looking for something to eat or drink... and still there was no sign of the workers? Noriko fiddled with some unidentified bread as they wandered around. What was keeping the staff so long? She wanted to get something to eat and leave before her conspicuously smart uniform could start getting attention.

Unfortunately, the distraction from any awkward social interaction was worse than the awkwardness.

Noriko ducked behind a shelf and breathed deeply. The other girls didn't go to her school and couldn't recognise her that way. The likelihood of one magical girl attending was high enough that it wouldn't be a remarkable new fact even if it was leaked to the fan community. She was a magical girl and had to step forwards in times like this.

"Ignite Heart! PIERCE AND SHATTER!"

The warmth of the transformation was familiar, starting in her chest and radiating out brilliantly as light. Hair wound itself tightly--more tightly than possible, to the point it seemed that it must have shrunk somehow. Her clothing dissolved into motes that reconfigured themselves into something more appropriate for combat--and then, Magical Girl "The Ripper" was ready to deal with this threat.

The girl took the direct path back to the Negari; Noriko grabbed the shelf and vaulted herself over it, right up to the front of the store and dangerous tentacle. Too thick to stab through in one go, but such a distinct appendage ought to have a weak point and... there: to her, a line of the brightest blue, where the 'muscle' didn't connect right as it moved to join the Negari's body proper.

Her rapid entrance was followed by a faster slash and the tentacle flapped on the ground.

"The Ripper, here to help!"
Why, why, would you seek to employ assassins as a large component of your domestic help? Whilst it might guarantee a defence against unexpected assailants, it was a glorious avenue for someone inserting their own assassin into your midst. Without simply having more money than anyone that might ever want you dead or some other means of earning loyalty from an amoral business, you were doomed in the long term.

Wondering about this family branch's apparent desire to be eventually stabbed in the back aside, there was something strange about the black haired maid's insistence that it had to have been her because they were her nails and yet continuing to claim that she didn't remember setting them up. That left one thing to check: was she ill.

The heiress stepped into the maid's reach, one hand placing itself on the girl's forehead.
Yes.
Old man! We need you! I am having to be more practical and less angry! D:
@Raineh Daze - Unless you marry into the Delacroix family/have Delacroix blood flowing through your veins, still no.

However, that sounds like the badass start to a badass fight.

Wolves are smaller than dragons. It's doable. OR ABUSE GENEALOGY.

Ahh, Nichijou...
... WOULD SUPLEXING A WOLF EARN THAT RIGHT?
Tyaethe rode at the head of the group, alongside Fanilly, and drummed her fingers against the sword in thought. The resulting metallic staccato was slightly grating but, with the large knight on an even larger horse, after a week of being fully armoured once again Tyaethe hoped that her normally intimidating visage had been restored. The deep red of today's scarf might help.

"Indrau is right that we should have expected a patrol. With how desperately the message was sent and how close we are to the capital, I would have thought the enemy would be keeping more of a watch for assistance, especially after a messenger broke through them," the paladin said, "That we haven't makes me think that we're too late or the enemy got inside and have the defensible position."

Typically, she seemed irritated by their enemy doing either rather than being right there to fight properly.
