It wasn't luck. She doesn't realize it, but she did know what she had to do. And no one intervened the assassin. He just did something then left her alone since there was a opening.And she hasn't exactly gotten much of a chance to show what she can do. She is just assumed to be useless. :p

She wouldn't need protection if she was a good fighter. It's much easier for a single person to get across Japan than an entourage. Thus, she can be made into a better fighter, which makes things easier for all concerned. >.>

There is a difference between 'luck out and stop the bear' and 'have a good chance of surviving a good assassin long enough that someone else can intervene'. Also she keeps going into danger, so being able to do something in it other than hope for the best is a nice start. :p

Then she was gone, back through the trees and soon enough returned to her game. If the princess was going to be killed by that thing, it would have happened already; there was no sense in searching a dark forest for her.
