The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio

I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly.
I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists.
I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...

I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.

I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.

I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time.
I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.

Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.

Everyone remembers that day, whether you were at work, at school, at home or on vacation, you heard the news soon enough.
Our first contact with aliens; the skies splitting open high above Tokyo and hordes of unknown aircraft coming through. Swarms of them, alien in their looks and unearthly, sweeping through the air and strafing and bombing the buildings and anything that looked like a defence. It was only after that it was found out they'd taken hundreds of captives.
The battles in the months following drove them back, on land and in the air, and eventually, years after, Humanity had long enough to take a breather - and draw up their plans to go through the hole in space to follow the invaders back.

Now, we've established our first base on the other side, the result of massive multi-national airlifts through the 'Isolation Zone' a hundred miles around the Hole in the Sky over Toyko, and the Joint Expeditionary Force is ready to take the battle to the unknown invaders - and to discover as much about them and their world as possible on the other side...

Inspired in part by GATE, Ace Combat and Yukikaze, as well as my love for alien invasion sci-fi where military technology isn't useless, and my massive love of fighter aircraft, I've decided it's time to get back into running something on here.

The game will take place with the players as pilots in a squadron of the Joint Expeditionary Forces, stationed at the new joint base complex on the alien world on the other side of the Hole in the Sky.
The pilots will be from a multitude of countries - though will have been chosen because they can co-operate and are good at their jobs,- but will be working together. They fly a variety of aircraft from their home countries, though will tend towards multi-role craft to better enable them to work together.
The aircraft and technology in general will be modern-day/very-near-future based, though some reverse-engineered alien technology creeping in as things progress as part of the plot, especially as more is discovered about the aliens and their society, technology and origins - much like in Stargate SG-1, how the humans ended up with their own alien-derived tech and equipment.

There will be a lot of other plot elements that come up as we go too, as I intend to a have a full story as we go, and a lot of other cool ideas about the alien world. For example, if you have seen GATE, it will be similar in that it has its' own races, societies and denizens that are subjugated by the aliens, and many of them will become allies and have an important part to play in overthrowing the aliens as well.

In terms of the mechanics, I am looking to keep the group quite small, and things fairly simple. It isn't essential that you know everyhing about fighter jets, or especially every tiny technical detail. In fact, I would prefer to keep things semi-realistic, but quite light on the technical side - however, I would say that at least a functional knowledge of some terminology and understanding on how fighter aircraft and their weapons, as well as the military, works or operates is kind of essential to a degree. However, there is luckily the internet to help, and I am also more than willing to offer assistance where it is needed. All of that can be gone into more though once I get some people who are interested.

Before I inevitably get people asking as well; no you cannot play ground crew, ground combatants, non-combatants, bad guys or anything that isn't a fighter pilot for the Joint Expeditionary Forces. The game is about fighter pilots, flying modern (i.e. in service or recently in service) aircraft.

Non-real aircraft, like Ace Combat's 'super planes' or something cool you found on DeviantArt won't be in this game.
The squadron the players will be part of will also not be the 'superstar' squadron - in fact, I kind of like the idea that they're just a run-of-the-mill, average squadron that keeps getting involved in things over their paygrade by sheer luck and circumstance. Not the worst, not the best, and certainly not bad... but somehow, luck keeps finding them.
So, some of the more fancy aircraft - like your F-22's, T-50's and F-35's - will be reserved for those super-squadrons, and you're likely to have a bit more of a variety of aircraft. And then it gives everyone something to work towards, too.

There will, however, be some cool super-tech around, as the game is set in a near-future setting, and a timeline that diverged from ours around the early-2000's too. There may be some unusual weapons options for your aircraft on some missions, and mentions of weapons tech that was only ever at the prototype stage in our world making it into production, as well as other cool and unusual things that have come to pass - not to mention the aliens' own technology.

Whatever else, if any of this sounds like it could be interesting to you as a game and a story - which, after all, will be the main focus - please let me know. I'm looking for a group of no more than six, and probably a minimum of four to get started (the Expeditionary Force has small squadrons!)
Appearance:

Name: Silverwind

Species: Pegasus Pony

Age category: Young Adult (i.e. early 20's)

Gender: Male

Cutie Mark: See image above; represents his uncanny sense of direction.

Occupation:
Silverwind currently works as an explorer and scout for the Royal Equestrian Cartography Corps. In short, he flies high, far, and wide, charting the lands of Equestria - and beyond - to scout information, draw sketches and gather information for the Equestrian government in order to establish where resources are, what creatures and people live in different places, dangerous or inhospitable terrain features, and so on. Sometimes his role takes him over already known areas to explore in more detail things already found, or finding new routes after events like earthquakes or other changes to the landscape.
He loves the thrill of exploration and the potential danger it takes him into, although he frequently causes headaches for his superior, the unicorn named Compass Rose, by getting himself in trouble with locals and involved in things that, honestly speaking, should have nothing to do with mapping, exploring, or surveying...

Other:
Silverwind is bold and reckless, but good at heart. He can be cocky and a little arrogant at times, but can keep a level head for the most part, especially when things get serious or people are in danger. He wanted to be a Wonderbolt, but failed the entrance exam after losing his temper and acting recklessly, which lead to putting other ponies in danger.
Spitfire - whom he admired and had something of a crush on - punished him for his bad behaviour, and he was forced to leave the academy. Although, what he frequently fails to remember is that she also told him he had a lot of potential, and his heart was in the right place, even if his head wasn't.
Since then he has used his time in the RECC to learn how to be a better flier and to work on disciplining himself and working on his occasionally volatile temper, and his lack of self-control.
Silverwind was born and grew up in Mareford, a settlement in the Western regions of Equestria, high in the forested hills and mountains. He loved being out in the wild, and soaring between hills and through valleys. He has always had a sense of adventure and wanderlust that persists into his adult years, but even as a young, gangly, and mischevious colt with a twinkle in his eye, he would always find his way home, which resulted in his getting a cutie mark that displayed his innate knack for direction.
I'll get my CS up later today, after I get home from work.
I will be playing my OC, a Pegasus who is a scout and explorer, he works for the Equestrian Cartographic Agency, after he failed the entry program for the Wonderbolts for being too impulsive and reckless.
I'd be up for it. I love me some poners, and I have my OC ready too.
If this is still live and going, I'd be very interested. There aren't enough (or, really, any) decent aviation RPs on the Guild as it is, and this one has got me interested.

I've got a few ideas for a character; I was thinking maybe an American pilot from the south, flying possibly a Grumman Tigercat, a Corsair or a P-51. I'll have to do some research to decide which though.
Too much logistical thinking for me. >.>

Yep. Saw the title and the opening post and was interested; sounded a bit like the backstory to Macross which definitely got me interested. Then all the realism-wank got going and that was me out.
Ajay was surprised by the commanding officers' informality. Back where and Amita hailed from, officers tended to be aloof, formal and very impersonal with their orders and manner; at least the ones that weren't enlisted, anyway. And he'd had very little experience with those, what with being a pilot and all. While it was vicious rumours and libellous to the highest order, much of the back-room gossip from the pilots and other personnel leaned toward the fact that most officers in commander positions in the armed forces had got their positions through connections, wealth, favours or blackmail, rather than deserved promotions.
Of course, it wasn't his place to think about such things.
Instead, he gave a brief glance over their commander-to-be instead. He seemed friendly, which was... surprising! Not unwelcome, but surprising. He glanced at Amita, who was looking around at the other pilots, trying to be discreet about it, but her interest and curiosty about their new comrades was hard to disguise, as was the interest on her face. For his part, the older pilot leant back in his chair a little, and tried to put his mind at ease; he was eager to hear more about what would come next.
Sorry for not getting a post up yet; my weekend was very busy and I've been a little ill with toothache since then. It hasn't really left me feeling like I can do much other than stare blankly at walls.
I'll try and get something up soon - I have medication now, so hopefully it'll kick in and I'll start feeling a bit more motivated.
I'll get one up before the weekend, most likely. Probably Friday, as I'll have more time then.

Thank you. I guess I'm just too auto critical sometimes. But just as the saying goes, "Better safe than sorry".

I thought my post was pretty awful too; I think we all (roleplayers, I mean) tend to criticise or analyse our own posts a lot, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I thought your post was fine too.
