Better late than never!

@Sugar and Spite @Moon Child @SalemFlame Getting in right under the wire. I haven't been feeling well over the past few days, so it was a bit tense for a while.

Steve reacted a half-second slower than Shimazu, momentarily startled by the figure’s sudden appearance. It wasn’t the result of slow reflexes or a lack of focus, but rather his inability to detect the new arrival. His powers had failed him in this instance, and it baffled him as to why.

Was it the being’s affinity for controlling the shadows? Or something far more complicated?

Whatever the case, he couldn’t dwell on it now.

Steve thrust the thought from his mind and immediately adjusted once Shimazu stepped forward. It was important that he not challenge his positioning; he trusted the man and would fall in line to allow him to intervene. Afterall, he had already dealt with this mysterious being. His knowledge would be far more valuable in this case. And so, he shifted to his right to cover the old man’s flank, his hand resting near his holster as a precaution.

“Easy,” Steve uttered, his voice firm to project his authority. He kept Ashley and Julia in his peripheral vision to ensure that they remained safe. “Nobody move… nobody rush him. We’re not making any sudden movements.”

The detective’s eyes locked with the man in the shadows, noting that he appeared more human in nature, a departure from the monster he had initially envisioned. It was a gentle reminder not to judge or form preconceived notions about his suspects. He needed to remain impartial and follow the facts.

“You picked one hell of a time to ask for a conversation,” Steve continued in a low tone. “So, here’s how this goes.” He nodded toward Shimazu without taking his eyes from the shadow being. “He asked you a simple question. You stay exactly where you are, hands up and palms out… no tricks or disappearing acts, and you answer him.”

The detective paused and canted his head, scrutinizing the man.

“Go on… who are you?”

I'm there!

The character sheets have been coming in pretty rapidly. I do still have a loose deadline of Jan 27th for all character sheets though, so I wouldn't sweat it *that* much.

anyway.

I'm cool with the character concept. Waylon is old, and his children are estranged, so it makes sense for him to have some sort of apprentice. I'm not sure about the living on property thing, as I was only planning for it to really be the church and the graveyard. We could compromise with perhaps the old grave keepers shack? I doubt it's anything fancy at all though, and probably needs a lot of TLC that may or may not have already been done - I'll leave that one up to you. I'm imagining one of those places that you look at like 'damn, it's free, but is it worth it?' Dunno if that makes sense. But ye, the concept checks out.

Yup, that makes total sense! I can also make the change to the caretaker's shack in the cemetery. In a lot of ways, I think it makes more sense that way. It could also be a running thing with my character wanting to get out of there... lol!

Anyway, thank you for your feedback! I'll go ahead and get started on the CS.

Wow, this is moving fast!

I wanted to pop in and run my character concept by you before moving ahead with fleshing out the CS.

@Sugar and Spite, I saw that your character's father (Waylon Shaw) is the preacher of the Baptist church. I was toying with the idea of a youth pastor who works alongside Shaw – he sees him as a sort of mentor or father figure in his life (I'm assuming he wouldn't know about the abuse). He is also tasked with conducting funerals and providing counseling sessions for anyone in need of those services. He lives on the church property, perhaps in the former church secretary's house or something like that. I envision it as more of a shack than anything elaborate. Would something like that work?
Throwing in my interest. I would love to participate!

Steve rocked back on his heels and absorbed the last of their comments in silence, his jaw working subtly as he tried to piece together the complex mosaic of details they had given him. Shadow manipulation. Gang interference through an orchestrated attack by the Blue Dragons. A targeted abduction. He had jotted it all down in his notebook; it helped him process things, in addition to providing him with a reference point. From his initial assessment, he deduced that none of it was routine. However, the consistency in their narratives confirmed that they were likely not hiding anything from him. They had also been cooperative when he had asked them to stay. He had to give them credit for that.

“Alright,” he said finally, his tone easing. “As far as I can tell, you’ve all been straightforward with me, and I’m not going to make any of you relive this twice. You’re not suspects, and you’re not being detained. I think I have everything I need.”

His gaze shifted briefly to Sarah, noting her restlessness. She hadn’t relaxed once since he arrived on the scene, which would’ve been suspicious in itself, but he could only presume she wanted to help her friend. He couldn’t fault her for that. In fact, it was admirable.

“If you need air, water… whatever helps,” he canted his head toward Sarah and offered a thin smile, “take it. Just stay relatively close, so I know you’re alright.”

Steve turned to Shimazu next, nodding to offer his respect to the old man. “Your assessment of the suspect is noted,” he stated firmly, tapping the end of his pen against the pages of his notepad. “If this individual is acting under coercion, or something akin to possession, I’ll make sure to include that addendum to the APB; that it warrants caution. The last thing I need is some rookie charging a potentially compromised meta and making a hostage situation worse.”

A knowing smile touched his lips, almost as if he expected the other man to understand his predicament. They shared a mutual bond in the sense that Mr. Shimazu used to serve as a law enforcement officer for the PCPD. That was all the respect he needed.

He held the old man’s gaze a moment longer before turning to regard Julia. “And you, Ms. Kray,” he spoke in a more somber tone, “you did the right thing turning over the goggles. I’m not interested in dragging you backward over mistakes you’ve already paid for. Once I pull the footage, they go straight back to you. You have my word.”

Straightening, Steve issued a sigh and tucked the notepad into his breast pocket before addressing the group as a whole. “From here, the rest is on me. I’ll file the initial report, escalate the abduction up the chain, and get the APB out with the shadow-ability advisory attached. I’ll also have a tech run a cross-reference on Blue Dragon activity in the area. There might be a connection, or it could just be a case of lousy timing, but either way, I’m going to include it. Better safe than sorry.”

His gaze drifted toward one of the darker corners of the diner, a hint of unease flickering over his features.

“I also want to ensure we’re not dealing with more than one shadow being… or walker,” he continued with more caution. “If someone targeted Madelyne Crane specifically, there’s a reason… and we’re going to find it.”

A warm smile touched his lips as he returned his attention to the group. “You’ve all done more than enough today. Just sit tight for a few more minutes, and then you’re free to head out.”
Looking great! I'll be working on submitting a character this week.
