Tell Me About Yourself ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Milquetoast. At least, at first. Shimokawa comes off as a tired old man with little interest in anything, let alone his job - although that second part couldn't be further from the truth. He prefers actions over words, just like an editor's favorite saying, "show, don't tell." He does take his position as editor seriously, and he doesn't mince words: in order to get the best out of every mangaka, he will point out every flaw in a script or storyboard... in great detail. He is a realist, that's all. Shimokawa does loosen up over drinks, and it's possible to get some humor out of him, if you're prepared for the most cringe-worthy dad jokes of all time. The longer he knows someone, the more affectionate he will become, although it's mostly with a friendly shoulder pat or ruffling of hair here and there. He doesn't talk about his personal life often, and only those closest to him know anything about his life outside of the office. There are little hints here and there: he buys a lot of 'cute' things, eats a lot of sweets, and he's always unavailable two weekends out of the month.
Work History ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔ Shimokawa was always a bookworm, and right out of highschool he took an internship at an editorial company, which evolved into a position as editor as the years went on. He met his now ex-wife there, and their relationship started somewhat scandalously: she was a novelist and he was her editor. Together they brought Hasumi's novels to the top of the charts. Of course, when their relationship was made public, it was deemed unacceptable by the editorial company. Shimokawa ended up leaving, and the couple enjoyed new found freedom in their relationship. Soon a baby was on the way. Shimokawa and his daughter bonded over stories and fairy tales, and while the girl was fond of her mother's storytelling, she was much more interested in picture books and manga. This was Shimokawa's first real exposure to manga, as he would often purchase it for his daughter as she got older. They bonded over it.
When Shimokawa applied to Shoujo Weekly he didn't expect to be hired. He recalled joking with his wife about doing it to get free comics for their daughter and sent in his resume. Of course Shimokawa happily accepted the position as he'd been getting a little restless as a stay at home father, and his daughter was old enough to look over herself now. He worked hard for a couple of years at the magazine with a few titles to his name, but none so famous "Gods' Game of Love," the reverse harem romantic comedy that would come to be one of Shoujo Weekly's flagship series. When Gods' Game got an anime, the whole office celebrated and treated Shimokawa to drinks. It was a nice feeling, and Shimokawa started to feel like he might be good at this job. It was similar to editing novels, but different. Exciting. He especially liked when he could brag about his mangaka partners doing well to his daughter, and bring her home some exclusive marketing material.
With the most recent reshuffling that came with AmeriTel's acquisition of the company, Shimokawa (now a successful magazine editor thanks to Gods' Game) was sent over to Shounen Spirit... where the vibe was completely different. No longer was he working on love stories and dealing with level headed female mangaka, now he was expected to handle hot blooded and perverted dudes and action series. This was well outside the scope of his experience - even when he worked in novels, he worked on drama and romance stories. And further than that, the stress of the job change fractured an already thinning marriage bond, and he and Hasumi divorced the same year. Still, he was a professional, and he focused on work. The two series he worked on in Shounen Spirit saw some modest popularity; particularly Life Supplier's Diary, a more drama and development focused story, where Shimokawa's strengths helping push the mangaka to greater heights. His second series, He*ck, was a comedic action title that never quite got the recognition other series got. Recently, both of these series came to an end, and with the way the magazine has been looking recently Shimokawa has been thinking about moving on himself. However, 'something' has kept him in the editor's office, looking over potential new series and working harder than ever...
What, you thought I'd say dangerous? Hell no, not when we've got heroes running around.
I mean sure, there are monsters and demons and natural disasters and heart disease, but I'm sure it's like that in every world! What I mean is we never face any apocalyptic threats. Prophecies of the end times, visions of demonic conquest, they're all thwarted by our beautiful and powerful Goddess, thanks to her「Heroic Selection Odyssey.」
Actually the HSO is coming up pretty soon, ain't it? Yeah, every hundred years or so she emerges from Agartha to awaken that heroic spark in people and get them on board to travel the world and help their fellow man. They say the best of these fledgling heroes goes on to stop whatever the next world-ending disaster would have been. Buuut the way I see it, the reason everyone aims for the top spot isn't for the chance to get their name in the history books. Nah, it's gotta be pure greed.
I mean, getting rich from adventuring? Having kingdoms indebted to you? Building your own harem of followers? Getting your deepest wish granted by the Goddess herself?
Who wouldn't fight for that?
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
And the protagonist of this story, this century's greatest hero? Why, it's...
"Me!"
"Me!"
"Me!"
"Me!"
What is this, you ask? Hey, good question, I wanna know too! What I think it is, is a casual fantasy RP with a low pressure OOC atmosphere, with several players taking the role of "heroes" of the land and all writing with the mindset that their character is the protagonist of the story.
Explore a shared setting where anyone can contribute to the world map and lore, develop evolving power paths for your character, and hopefully have fun writing a hero who gives in to their greed in order to become the best among their peers! It's my intent to also explore other facets of a hero's personality besides their drive to do good, so all characters will have a secondary, personal goal to chase besides becoming the legendary hero of their generation.
✽ Collect Hero Points (HP)
The Heroic Selection Odyssey is part life's calling and part competition. Clearing dungeons, defeating monsters, helping villagers with quests, swaying the hearts of the people to your side, and doing all kinds of good deeds will earn your character HP - Hero Points! HP is a rough measure of how strong (or more accurately, how heroic) a hero is. At the end of the HSO, the character who has the highest HP value becomes the next Legendary Hero! Taking the top spot is also a sure fire way to fulfill a character's greatest desires, so aim high! ★
✽ Player vs Player vs Environment
Playing against the GM is not the only way to gain HP. Heroes will be able to see how much HP other heroes have, which they can use to decide to avoid, team up with, or even challenge another character. To promote the most growth of the powers of her heroes, the Goddess incentivizes duels between them. Characters can steal HP from each other by defeating each other in combat, games, races, quests, or any other type of competition one can think of. Don't worry, hitting zero HP does not take anyone out of the running!
✽ Rival System
Because what is a protagonist without their rival, after all? Especially useful if a character is falling behind, declaring a rival and outperforming them nets bonus HP! The farther behind a hero is, the more bonus HP they get for beating their rival! Rivals do not have to be mutually exclusive, and they can change over time. If you're too shy to pick a fellow player as your rival, then just ask me for one! I will create an NPC rival for you to fight and bond with! Until their usefulness has passed and I cruelly throw them into the void of character development!
The vibe of this RP is intended to lean more towards lighthearted action and a fun, somewhat goofy atmosphere that follows characters with big personalities while they get stronger and stronger. However, anyone that knows me also knows that I love whump and angst, so no promises that it won't start veering into that direction if character arcs warrant it. In particular, heroes do not have to be typically heroic. A "hero" is anyone whose power was awakened by the Goddess - a scumbag of a person can become a hero, and they can commit villainous acts and chase dark desires, but only doing good deeds will give them HP... unless they end up challenging other heroes to try and steal HP from them instead.
⫸ Start with your power concept! Heroes awaken with one power.
Choose one starting power that you will have the most fun with, ideally one that doesn't overlap too much with another character's starting power. Starting powers level up with the accumulation of HP, gaining additional applications. For example, the ability to control flame might level up to include fire-based flight, or pave the way for obtaining other elemental abilities.
A character's powers don't necessarily have to reflect their past or personality, especially once they start evolving. As powers grow they might start overlapping with others, but its alright if power paths are similar, so don't worry about planning a path ahead of time. Also, at this time there is no ban on potential powers. Feel free to choose things like necromancy, time control, mental manipulation, etc. if you have a solid concept - it will start weak, and we'll work together to make it fair for everyone. Also feel free to get weird with it if you come up with something fun.
Every character's power comes from their Heroic Awakening. World magic and racial traits are very minor. Being connected to the bloodline of past heroes can give a character other weak inherited traits, but only insofar that they might be a little tougher, swim a little faster, or be a little more tolerant of the cold than your average joe, but they hardly give anyone an edge over fellow heroes.
Oh, I almost forgot! Make sure to give your power a proper name/title!
⫸ Give in to your greed! Choose your character's desire.
Heroic Awakening does not just result the emergence of powers in people. Without exception, every Heroic Awakening also sparks an intense desire deep in each new hero's heart. It can be noble or wicked, specific or vague, something they've already been working towards, something they never knew they wanted before, or something they've tried to deny about themselves. Whatever their desire is, it now sits at the front of their thoughts. It would help to choose something they cannot easily obtain. Becoming the top hero in the HSO might just be the quickest way to get it, so make sure your character has at least some drive to compete. That is kinda the whole point of the game, after all. Selfishly go for the goal!
⫸ Now let's see what we're working with physically. Age, gender, race...
Heroic Awakening is triggered by the Goddess' ascent to the world above, and only then. This means that when it happens, heroes awaken at whatever stage of life they're in, young or old. There isn't any age minimum or maximum besides being a little reasonable when creating your character. However, I'm not against pitches for Super Infant or Great Battle Granny. The Goddess also does not discriminate based on gender, sex, or race. The jury's still out on whether or not she direct chooses who awakens in the first place or if it's completely random, given there are so many who awaken during each Odyssey cycle.
This is a fantasy world! Feel free to go with something other than human. As of now there is no official list of race options, so pick whatever you like or come up with something new and we'll incorporate it into the (minimal) world lore.
Awakening does not change the awakened's appearance, save for one thing: a symbol will appear in the center of each new hero's forehead. Called the Goddess Eye, this mark is said to be the way that she sees everything her heroes achieve in order to reward them. It also enables each hero to get a rough estimate of their comrades' and rivals' HP. The basic mark is red-orange and simple, but if you're so inclined feel free to go with another interpretation. It's not that unusual for heroes to have Goddess Eyes of different shapes and colors, even with many detailed parts, though all are vaguely recognizable as eyes.

When you're finished, write your character concept down in a character sheet! It can be as simple or as fancy as you want! You can also include as much extra information as you want, just be sure to include everything from the creation guide. Here's a super basic sheet with the minimum required information!

_________________ "Huh?" Ames blinked, looking between herself and all the other party members present. Just as Raime said, the only people that had that creepy old man's talismans equipped were herself and Amulak - and the mage was leveling at a much slower rate than the rest of them with just one talisman. Ames had been wearing two. She look at the slips of paper she'd left with her shoes, and after putting those back on she felt an impulse to stomp on the things.
"Really? This whole time it was due to these stupid things?" Ames huffed, barely suppressing said impulse. She couldn't even complain that it was a scam, because they did help. The stat increase had been great. And... well, it was her own fault for equipping two. Her face flushed slightly in embarrassment. It had been her own fault this whole time!
Ames watched Amulak peel his talisman off, and she scooped her own up off the grass and pocketed them. "Yeah, thanks Raime," she sighed. "At this point I'm just kind of tired. I need like, a mental recharge..." The warrior tucked a thumb under her chin, expression morphing into a thoughtful one. "Let's get everyone back together before more grinding. And maybe I'll re-think my class or... or at least get a sword or something. We kinda got thrashed, I'm surprised that thing gave up so easily."
Ames didn't know if she would really swap classes or not, but without the famed gothic lolita MMO healer around, it would be nice for someone to pick that up. Healing was magic, and she did want to wield some kind of magic after all. Regardless of any combat thoughts, the redhead was serious about a bath. A shower at the very least. If possible maybe I'll peddle these talismans too. Sell them for a loss I guess... if Kriz logs back in I'll just repay him the silver.

A loud splash drew the Cadet's attention from the living ship. He spotted Sakura overboard, along with various safety devices thrown down to help her climb back onto the ship. Or "shippy," I guess, he thought, letting his thoughts wander off as they often did once it was clear that the girl wasn't in danger. Water logged maybe, but otherwise she seemed alright, thankfully. Ace Cadet chuckled along with Sakura and Bowser Jr., although the latter's tone made it seem he was more laughing at her, not with her, but regardless between her spill and Shippy's debut, it was a nice distraction from the bleak plan the hooded figure tried laying out for them. Though speaking of that plan, the hunter's mind was brought back to it when he quickly turned away from Sakura when she stripped off her uniform, even though she had a training outfit underneath. It was only polite, right? Facing the sea once again, the Cadet squinted ahead at the dark swirling path of sea a little ways off.
"Y'think that's the place the woman was talking about?" asked to no one in particular. He searched the waves for any hint of a fin or shadow, any clue at all about exactly what kinds of monsters they would be dealing with. Piscine Wyverns? Leviathans? Carapaceons? Or something like a big fish, or weirder? All he could see from the ship's bow was fog for the most part. Cadet dragged his eyes over the waves around the area too, but likewise didn't spot anything of interest until he was looking straight down over the rail into the water below. The flash of scales sparkled in his eyes. Many scales. A school of a fish?
Brineybeard confirmed that yes, the sea was teeming with fish in this area. Lucky day indeed!
"Captain!" Cadet exclaimed, leaving his spot by the rail and running up to the man, clapping the pirate on his shoulders with both of his hands. The hunter's face clearly expressed his excitement. "We can use your rods? Gargwawesome! Thank you!"
The Cadet hurried over to the case the captain indicated, eagerly removing the equipment from it. The took a few, intending to hand them out to the others aboard. Truthfully, the Cadet wasn't the best fisherman, but he wasn't the worst either! And fish were so useful! Their scales, organs, and bones could be turned into a variety of things, not to mention their worth as food. It would be interesting to see what kind of fish lived in an ocean like this.
Ace Cadet made his way down the line, offering a fishing rod to everyone: Geralt, Isabelle, Link, Cuphead, and Hat Kid. Although Sakura was busy with a martial arts routine and pointing out a battle on a nearby ship that the Cadet hadn't even noticed until now, he nonetheless offered her one as well. "Here, if you want!" he said, to each person. On his way to the pair of Koopas, Kamek suggested a wager for the area boss' spirit.
"Oho, interesting," Ace Cadet said with a grin. "I'm up for it! Biggest, coolest, and most-est fish?" He glanced at Bowser Jr. struggling with the spear and handed off a rod to Kamek in case the boy decided to change his mind, or if they laid down any rules which was the next thing the hunter asked about. "Are you thinking a fishing free-for-all? 'Cause I might have an advantage if we don't stick to fishing rods," he laughed.
To demonstrate, he strode over to the rail once more and switched his slinger from grappling mode to net mode. That piscine researcher would give me such a scolding for this, Cadet thought to himself. He reached his arm over the water, taking aim at a large group of fish. Once the school was close enough he activated the slinger and the net attachment shot out into the water with the same force it used to haul heavy hunters up steep cliffs. When the cable was reeled in and the hunter lifted the net onto the deck, there were several squirming fish inside of it.

New Power: Dark Magic. Primrose's aptitude for dark magic has returned to her. She can cast wide range waves of dark magic to damage multiple enemies at once with her Night Ode spell, or concentrate her magic into a more powerful single target spell: Moonlight Waltz. ***
Settled back in her seat, Primrose listened to the others talk. She had no recommendations to offer Sectonia, so she kept quiet. Sure, Primrose had some reads on most of the people in the Alcamoth, but they were all mostly the same: heroic types. There were precious few that the dancer had gotten to know beyond a passing conversation in a hallway. It was interesting to hear some opinions about the people she'd been spending her time with though. Even more interesting though was the queen's delegation. That man, Vandham, explained most of it before the three teams left, but a lot of it went over Primrose's head even if the whole concept intrigued her. In another life if she'd grown up to be the noblewoman she was meant to be, perhaps she would have enjoyed retaining knights and sending them on quests. Instead she was here, in another desert, listening to an colorful insect queen give instructions to a little flying pig with a bright ball coming out of it's head.
Focusing on the bizarre amused Primrose, and a smirk grew on her face the longer she thought about it. However once Fox joined them on the bus again, she wiped the smile away and instead fixed the furry man with an expectant look, raising one of her eye brows as she did so. A silent bid for information. He was the only one that spoke with the strange woman after all. Midna mirrored her curiosity - but the rest of the group was more enthralled with the giant mechanical animal. Once the group got moving again in a new direction, Primrose once again gazed out of the window, trying to get a better look at the thing as they approached it.
What an adventurous group, the dancer mused to herself. Frankly she would have steered clear of that thing and continued on toward the mountain if she were in charge... then again, her previous companions came to mind as they so often did, and she could easily see Tressa and Cyrus trying to convince everyone else to investigate such a strange contraption. Face with that kind of enthusiasm, Primrose might have caved.
Once the cat car drew closer to the beast, it was clear just how massive it truly was. Who could have built something like this? Primrose pressed her hand against the glass, watching the machine walk, then look towards them, then start building electricity... Oh, no.
Primrose turned away swiftly, her hands flying up to cover her head as the lightning crashed down nearby and rocked the car even harder than the erratic driving did. When the group had put some distance between themselves and the beast, Primrose caught her breath and looked back at it. Panther asked if they should try and tackle the thing while Midna (apparently in favor of attacking it) let loose a flurry of what Primrose could only guess were expletives.
"...that's strange," Primrose said after a few moments of watching the false camel continue moving on. "It's not chasing after us. It only attacked when we got close."
She turned her eyes back to her new companions within the car. "If it were alive that would be normal for an animal, but it is a construct. I would wager it's protecting something."
Something inside of itself the dancer guessed, considering there didn't seem to be any real landmarks nearby the machine. "...or someone," Primrose continued, "See the buildings on it's back? Perhaps it houses someone who controls it."
Of course, that was all just a hypothesis. After speaking her mind, Primrose looked towards the shining mountain and the leviathan that circled it. Would it be worth it to investigate this machine further, or just continue toward the mountain? If the creature was guarding some treasure, would that even be helpful?
"...who's to say the sun even sets here?" Primrose said, glancing at Midna before continuing, "I am of the mind that we should go on to the mountain, but if you all believe it would be worth it to have a look inside that creature... I would think our flying friends have the best chance of disrupting that lightning bolt." Primrose sat back in her seat, casually smoothing the fabric of her dancer's outfit. "And unless that camel has a thing for brunettes, I don't think I will be much help unless we get onto it," she finished with a small shrug. It was true, battling giant mechanical monsters was just a little bit outside of her experience.
No-nonsense editor was my character concept too, though I was thinking an older man. Maybe a senior editor? Of course, I also have a mangaka in mind too. I'll work on both concepts and submit whichever one will fit better with the rest of the cast.
Thank you for the continued interest! Most of the OOC is done, final edits should be coming soon, so keep watching this thread. I should have it posted this week.
Awesome. Honestly I haven't been able to shake the couple of character ideas I've had for this, so I'd be glad to join in if you'll have me!

Hello! I'm Yankee.
I'm usually down for pretty much anything: action, adventure, romance, horror, taboo, comedy, smut, gore, slice-of-life, etc.
I like cute, fun stories just as much as dark, gross, traumatic stories. I love fluff and whump in equal measure (well... maybe whump a lil more)
I enjoy creating original characters for RP, but I get as much enjoyment writing as canon characters in fandom-based games!
On that note I like [abbr=including manga]comic books[/abbr], [abbr=including anime]cartoons[/abbr], and videogames. I'm also very into cosplay and art!
I am a very slow writer, so my preferred posting pace is once per week or less. I usually post on weekends.
I like to have fun while writing, so I prefer relaxed partners who don't take things too seriously.
