If you are bound to the ground and don't have a high speed movement skill, or some way to destroy the ground to move, then the ground kind bind you, it can lift up from beneath you and throw you around, it can crush you, it can cut you, it can turn you into pieces by slashing you to bits.
His argument is logical, it makes sense. There could certainly be exceptions, there almost always are, but that doesn't make the general statement any less true, does it? No, it does not.
