Are you going for something themed after the Silence from Doctor Who? That's the first impression I get anyways.

Nope; I don't even watch Dr. Who, actually. Though I have heard of them. I think. They're the ones you forget about if you look away, right?

Anyway, it's probably the whole mouthless thing they have going on. The Silence don't have mouths, right? Or at least not very visible ones.

Another big tech for the Neo-Sovs is cloning-it's the reason they have such a big population, for a colonial power. Indeed, clones, vatgrowns, outnumber naturalborns by a huge margin.

I will leave the ways cloning technology was abused by the AI mentioned in my last post to your imaginations.

For now.

Hurray for cloning! It's really the best way to go about things; no feed to fuss over all the messy details of going natural. And you can choose who gets to have kids! That way the poor don't just keeping making more, smaller poor people.

Now it's day and night the irons clang, and like poor galley slaves
We toil and toil, and when we die, must fill dishonored graves
But some dark night, when everything is silent in the town
I'll shoot those tyrants one and all, I'll gun the flogger down
I'll give the land a little shock, remember what I say,
And they'll yet regret they've sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay.

Now we just need some space Chinese who practice "socialism with galactic characteristics".

<Snipped quote by ClocktowerEchos>I actually expect that kind of reaction from the Federation.
Human factions being out there is weird but when even alien races copy their ancient and way outdated cultural norms they would question whether they took too much drugs and actually they are just dreaming about some weirdly cliche sci-fi world.

Also sneer at nations which still resort to barbaristic measures like violence and war (which the Federation totally does but they found more PC sounding terms and convoluted methods to do that) and discriminate based on appearance when to them a random Q-Med can change looks within a hour flat.

Overall I feel my Federation might even manage to be more alien than most extraterrestrial factions in there.

I think I have the most alien human civilization.

A brief overview of the Neo-Soviets.

They're built from four basic colony-states-each with a differing culture.

You've got the so-called core colonies-the ones that went all in on communism, and built their entire identity around it. These poor SOBs had the misfortune to be the first ruled by the pain-slave using aristocrats and their AI friend.

Then you've got what I'll be calling the Hivers-cybernetic colonists, adopting themselves to a harsh, arctic environment. Based out of massive, sprawling cities built around geothermal vents-or "human hives" if you will.

Then you have the Confederates-a loose group of miners, and rough and tumble types settled on a string of questionably habitable, resource-rich worlds. These guys love their hardsuits.

Finally, you've got the genetically engineered super soldiers I mentioned, originally a US marine unit, co-opted and brutally modified by the AI, these guys look human, but they're a shit ton deadlier and their genetic code could, charitably, be called "fucked".

The CentralGov has to make all of these groups get along like good communists.

....

....

The Premier could also be called "chief cat herder".

There is of course only one political party in the Neo-Soviet.

.....

......

The fact it is actually several dozen political parties pretending to be one political party is irrelevant.

They call their parties "delegations".

This makes it totally different.

....

Like many governments, polite lies make up a fair portion of their governing structure.

Neo-Sov in a nutshell:

"We know the meaning of BDSM! Bolsheviks, Domination, Stalin and Masochism!"

Then you've got what I'll be calling the Hivers-cybernetic colonists, adopting themselves to a harsh, arctic environment. Based out of massive, sprawling cities built around geothermal vents-or "human hives" if you will.

"We're techno-barbarian eskimo dwarves! :D"

Then you have the Confederates-a loose group of miners, and rough and tumble types settled on a string of questionably habitable, resource-rich worlds. These guys love their hardsuits.

"Mhmmmmmmmmm... look at dat hardsuit Johnny, doncha wanna just blow your molten alloys all over dat thang?"

Finally, you've got the genetically engineered super soldiers I mentioned, originally a US marine unit, co-opted and brutally modified by the AI, these guys look human, but they're a shit ton deadlier and their genetic code could, charitably, be called "fucked".

Then let us honor the memory of the furry space communist with fitting music that I propose be the athemn of the Neo-Sovs.

....More fitting then I'd like to admit.

To lay it all out:

The comment Key made about the Neo-Sov's being LARPers who liked red would sting. Partially because it's true, to an extent. Their adaptation of communism sprang from a weird conservative streak, considering just how far the AI and the "aristocrats" went. While communism is often represented as the wave of the future-the Neo-Sov's adopted it during their revolution as a way of harkening back to the past in a sense. In a sense it was *very* reactionary. They're terrified of the new horizons space travel, technology, the like, represents, because they've seen it abused horribly before.

Hence the adaptation of communism-and their insistence on trying to mirror the old soviet system despite the reality not really being like it at all. They're trying to use the past-the USSR, as a shield against what they view as the terrifying possibilities of the present.

The Romans and the Feddies really freak them out, understandably.

...

So.

Yes. Alot of contradictions that make Yakaty Sax somewhat fitting.

@Ophidian Not going to lie, I honestly thought that the Neo-Sovs were basically the Imperium of Man only with communism instead of religion.

And here's another equally fitting national anthem!

Oh, they're not that oppressive. Or willing to kill their own citizens. There's just....alot of quiet desperation to them. But I understand the confusion.

They're sort of inspired, partially, by the purity faction in Beyond Earth. Clinging to the past because the present has kicked them around but good, often with the technology someone said would be a salvation. Seeing other factions running around with tech they've seen abused, they know can be abused, in horrible ways...

Well.

I'd start to polish my artillery pieces too.

...

And I'm saving that link.
