Maybe a deal went bad and someone's out to get 'em.
Or maybe it's just the monotony of everyday life that's gonna kill em first.
Either way no matter the background these people got one thing in common,
they never had a choice...
You see the black called to em, to the very essence of their soul,

Once you got it in your bones it never ever truly goes away. It's not an easy life but it is 'life'. It's the closest thing you will ever find to how life was meant to be... Free.

BEGINNINGS

For one reason or another fate has brought you here. Prophet, the sixth planet in the Georgia system. Word has traveled that a silent wealthy sponsor is looking for a crew to man his private ship. A lot of personal freedoms and choice has been promised with the offer. It almost sounds too good to be true...

@Dark LightSo to answer your question I think the reason he left probably has to do with so sort of operation during the war where he was asked to commit some sort of awful atrocity. As a result his faith in the alliance faltered and he left.

Also I like the financial struggles of firefly but don't want to be bogged down by coin counting so I am thing using a system roughly like modern D20
As a crew you will have two financial ratings. Plat's & Cred's.
1= broke poor, to 5= wealthy extravagant.
You will be paid for jobs on this scale too.

If you have an average rating of three and you are buying simple to average supplies and doing just the necessary repairs and maintenance your score will not drop for a few weeks. An average job will supplement your funds and allow you to keep going.
Without a job they will drop,
I'll warn you in advance before doing so.
Even with a score of three you can still splash out and by something with a value of 5 but this will drop your score.
Alternatively you can live below your means and your funds will last much longer. (But will your spirits?)

Once the gameplay starts it shouldn't feel too table-topy.
But like a 'good' table top I want the pre-game and in-game choices to matter.
I won't bend with the stats. Personally I need that to know who is the strongest and actually can kick down that door, ect ect.
I normally prefer fallouts SPECIAL for more detail.

Skills we could get rid of the scores and just say major/minor.

Lastly money. Like I said I want it to be an issue but coin counting will be a diabolical pain! (We can do it if everyone wants.)
I like wealth level.
I'll find a better way to describe it in game instead of 1 to 5
I'm also going to restrict some posh planets if you don't have a high enough credit rating. The amount of money you have just determines your class and lifestyle you can live.

Biography:

Born in a lowly family, his wits and intelligence kept him in school with good grades. His brother introduced him in suspicious circles where he started to work with drugs and creating them. He kept the habit all the way through high school and university. His grades were good when it came to chemistry. He could have gotten an excellent position in pharmaceutical or chemical company if his history with drugs hadn't been revealed on blood tests. Unable to get a proper job, he wandered to outer rim where he started to create drugs and illegal medicine that he sold.

Recent events:

His drug- and medicine making has made him unwanted among his rivals. It seems some of his merchandise was sabotaged, but his reputation got a blow. Incident put a small bounty over his head.

Other important notes: University accesses were halted but prior to freezing his account he succeeded in downloading illegally several sets of articles and books.

Distinguishable features:Doc is tall and for some reason unnaturally healthy; No one’s ever seen her sick and she gets by on 4-5 hours a day. She eats feast to famine and has no effect from it swearing it’s because she sets foot on the nasty ground as little as possible.

Her choice of clothing is always brief sometimes only boxers and a sports bra

Karen White was born aboard a Liner named the Legend of Mercy which was run by a crew consortium of which both her parents were members and it is for that reason she always answers that she doesn’t have a home world just a home. Raised aboard a ship she could have become a pilot, engineer or purser but instead she formed a friendship with the ship’s Doctor and became his Helper because he couldn’t refer to her as a nurse because she had no formal schooling. She would have thrived and perhaps even been sent to school at one of the big medical tech schools if the war hadn’t broken out and while on Athena the Purple Bellies killed because he had been treating the wounds of two men while hostage to their friends. (I can’t see more than that being known about this event in her life unless people ask)

It was Doctor Wilson’s death that turned Karen into a Browncoat because she had been there as well and watched the whole thing. She had traveled out to a recruiting station she’d caught wind of and offered herself up as an Infantryman but the recruiters asked her a few questions about her skills and what she’d been up to till she fell on their lap and when they discovered that she was a medical helper they immediately sent her to a sort of school that trained combat medics. Naturally the absurd nature of the Verse decided they were taking too long and shortened the training by throwing several nasty battles at the Browncoat forces that chewed up the previous graduates quickly because the Purple Bellies had targeted them almost as much as the had anyone in command. The initial rush of students for this profession quickly trickled off due to the two factors of most Medics having very short lifespans and the caliber of troop intelligence declining because the smart people had already decided to lay low and just hope to survive the war as a neutral.

Karen was forced into more and more technical roles because of a rapidly growing shortage of trained doctors to do the job till eventually she was the closest thing her unit had to a Doc and they were grateful to have her. Even lacking any formal schooling Karen was known to keep most of her patient's breathing if they still had most of their parts and even if they didn’t. (This is all anyone really knows about her service because she doesn’t speak of it to anyone or maintain contact with anyone she may have served with)

Karen was one of the lucky ones when the war ended because she was still breathing and as a primary medic considered no threat to the Alliance who never even took her into the holding camps that they took the others into basically throwing her out on the street with nowhere to go.

Like all those others who’d been on the wrong side she was forced to do whatever was required to survive and had to resort to becoming a Quack Doc who practiced medicine on people that couldn’t afford a real doctor

• Doc loves to keep in shape by doing dances in her medbay that people pay good money to see in most ports and she has been known to do exotic dancing to make some spare if the money is right
• Doc collects all sorts of books on medicine and reads them as if they were romance novels ( Curled up on the gurney in panties a T-shirt and smoking something
• She never talks about the war, about the people she knew, where she was or if she ever saw action
• She will holster a handgun and can if needed use it but she never practices though she has never show either an interest or aversion to weapons.

• Prudes, Dudes, Rudes; you know the animals of society
• She hates rain; says she’d only live in a desert where water minded it’s business and stayed on the ground
• People who want to exalt the war

Flaws

• No sense of Decency; Doc thinks people worry too much about what a person is wearing or not wearing. Of course she doesn’t run around exposing her naughty bits.

Karen is strange I know and some of you might think she's touched; seen too much but if you stay around her you'd find it's how she grew up....she's the medical version of Kylie with a touch of the weird.

She'd need the Mechanic's help from time to time hammering and cutting down things to make surgical tools; oh and lock your fine tool tool chest things there tend to walk. If you catch her at it she calls it scrounging not stealing.

Doc won’t pick up anything over 20 pounds unless it is a needed piece of medical gear; You want a strong back she isn’t in that profession.

Raised on a Starship all her life Doc has to be lured off the ship because she doesn’t trust the sanitation of the ground bound. Also because of her upbringing she doesn't care about privacy considering it an odd request
