The Wolves of the Mediterranean

This game is set mainly in and around the Mediterranean Sea in an alternative version of 1920 where there was no World War 1, instead there is a cold war of sorts. Britain, France, Portugal, Greece and Russia are in a close alliance as are Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, Rumania and Bulgaria. Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland are all officially neutral however their sympathy lies heavily with Britain and their allies. Serbia, Montenegro and Albania are under pressure from their neighbours to join the alliance with Germany however they have yet to do so; Scandinavia, Denmark in particular, is under similar pressure. Spain is currently neutral, having recently changed from a monarchy into a republic. Italy is under pressure from both sides to join alliances due to their strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean. Bi-winged sea planes and zeppelins filled with pirates, bounty hunters, soldiers, gangs and slavers rule the skies while the waters are frequented by large liner ships usually transporting goods or slaves between the countries of the Mediterranean. Long distance passenger travel is usually conducted by large zeppelins. Slaves, slavery having never been abolished, are the most valuable commodity in this area of the world and people pay high prices for healthy slaves and the Mediterranean is the place where most of the slave trade exists making it a highly sought after area by the powers of Europe.

The World

Technology
The technology of the world isn’t much different from the 1920 of reality. Weaponry is typically bolt action rifles and revolvers/hand guns for foot soldiers. Machine guns are used on planes and zeppelins, some larger zeppelins may have anti-aircraft flak cannons. Most ships have anti-aircraft weaponry in order to protect them from piracy. Planes are all bi-winged or occasionally tri-winged and the development of monoplanes is still in its infancy with only a few prototypes existing. Most planes found in the Mediterranean area have large floats attached to allow them to land on water as well as land, these are especially popular among pirates as well as naval air forces. Large flying ships with three banks of tri-wings are used by Italy as passenger liners and travel between South America and Europe, transporting the rich on luxury trips.

Zeppelins are used both by militaries and civilian bodies. Militaries often use them as escorts for convoys as due to their large size the can be equipped with heavier weaponry and can also carry small fighter planes attached to them which can provide a quick defence force in case of attack. They are also used as civilian transports, in a similar fashion to the Italian air liners and are a common sight above Europe.

The Wolves of the Mediterranean
The Wolves of the Mediterranean were a gang of pirates who operated 8 years prior to the beginning of the story. They recruited the best fighter aces in Europe at the time and launched several raids and heists during their 3 year existence. They were founded by Wolfgang Gotz and Arturo Vargas; who had recently returned to Europe having volunteered for the Austro-Hungarian air force during their war in South America. They had both gained reputations as being excellent fighter pilots and after the war they found themselves with no skills except piloting and so they turned said skills to piracy. Wolfgang Gotz had been taken prisoner by the Portuguese armed forces, and had been sold into slavery. He was freed by Arturo Vargas from the gold mine where he had been put to work, the experience gave him a deep hatred and resentment for the institution of slavery as well as the governments who carried it out. Part of the reason the Wolves had become so famous was the practice of raiding slave ships and freeing the slaves on board.

The Wolves were considered by most of the European powers as criminals and were actively hunted by militaries and bounty hunters alike. The gang operated for 3 years and caused so much financial damage that Italy called all the European leaders together to a summit in which it was decided that a task force would be set up to hunt and destroy the Wolves once and for all. This task force was made up of international pilots who operated under the Italian Air Force. Although this made their lives harder, the Wolves survived for another year before deciding to go their separate ways, retire and change their identities, all of them had made enough money to live comfortably wherever they chose. They were hunted for another 2 years before the Italian government disbanded the task force they had set up to find them and it was largely accepted that the Wolves of the Mediterranean were no more. They are still wanted criminals but there is no active operation to locate and arrest them as in the wake of their disbandment other pirate gangs stepped in to take their place.

Our Characters
My character will be Wolfgang Gotz, one of the founding members of the Wolves of the Mediterranean. He will have been living peacefully until his family are killed and he turns back to a life of piracy to get revenge on the men who killed them. Your characters will either be previous members of the Wolves, remember it has been 8 years since they disbanded so they would be in their early 30s or at least their late 20s, or else they will be notable pilots who my character accepts into the group. There would have to be a reason that my character accepts new people so they would have to have some kind of specialist skill that makes them stand out from all the other pirates. The other founding member of the Wolves, Arturo Vargas will be the antagonist of this story, he’s joined the Italian Air Force and is in charge of an anti-piracy air squad using his knowledge of pirate tactics and safe havens to devastating effect.

Standing at a rather unimposing 5’09”, Lucian is hardly athletic but nevertheless in commendable physical condition thanks to a long history of having both an active

Welp, there she is, my character. I hope you like her and that the wing walking thing isn't too out there. I don't know how realistic you were aiming for but I don't intend for her to be a ninja or anything, just thought of the whole idea being popular in the twenties and kinda ran with it.

Also, I kept it vague but if someone wants to be the character that she was partnered with before getting her own plane and/or the one who taught her to fly, that would be cool. Also, if you agree with it, Danko, I'll edit the sentence about her being able to keep the plane she hijacked to specify that it was Wolfgang who let her do so.

I'm also open to removing the part where Madelief ever got a plane and having her remain a support gunner and wing walking sharp shooter.

Also, I thought that perhaps Madelief's uncle could have been involved somehow with what happened to Wolfgang's family? Maybe he's working out who the Wolves are and has blackmailed Madelief into doing...something.
I dunno, just an idea.

Soooo, yeah, that's that.

I really like Madelief, you really hit the nail on the head with the sense of adventure I'd like them to all share, that's why the Wolves worked together so well, they were all adventurous. Just one quick note, World War 1 hasn't happened in this world as of yet. The only wars that have happened in recent memory are colonial uprisings or the war between Portugal and Austria-Hungary over Spain's former colonies.

Other than that it's perfect, I don't think the wing walking and shooting is too outlandish. The Wolves were all exceptional people after all. I'm fine with Wolfgang being the one who allowed Madelief to keep her plane, he can also be the one who taught her to fly if you like and if nobody else wants to fill that role. I think using her uncle as a potential protagonist would be good, we can see where we can fit him in as the story unfolds.

I've not heard back from our fourth player so I may post a quick interest check over in the Advanced section to find another player to round the numbers out a bit, I'll give him until this evening to make an appearance before doing so. Looking forward to your CS gowia.

Oh wonderful! I'm so glad you like her since I really struggled with getting her history down in the beginning.

Yes, I sort of felt like I got the 'feel' you were going for in the atmosphere of the Rp and tried to make a character that would fit that, its hard to describe but I'm glad you think I got it right. I took quite a bit of inspiration from the way you wrote your character and the world building you've got going on, really encouraged me to kick up the detail. I'm also happy that the wingwalking thing worked out, I thought a weird talent like that would get her noticed, especially if she was already in the public eye as a performer.

Oh, yes of course, somehow I must have confused the European crackdown on the Wolves and piracy in general with the cold war...though that still wouldn't fit timeline wise. Oh well, I must have just messed up, I've edited it now so that Madelief's uncle just suddenly shut the Kriesz's out and inexplicably stopped providing them with money. I have a few ideas for why but I figured that'd be best kept as a story development for later on in the Rp.

I've also edited it to specify that Wolfgang allowed her to keep her plane, does the wording work for you? I intentionally wrote it from Madelief's perspective so its more her interpretation of events but if you had a specific reasoning as to why Wolfgang would allow her to keep the plane, I'd put that in.

I haven't specified who taught her to fly yet, since you've both offered and I've made it to imply that she just sort of learned from everyone. Though I can see Gowia is shaping up his character to be the type that would take on a trainee pilot. I think there could be some interesting interactions there if Erik were to be viewed as something of a father figure during the first run of the Wolves, because obviously Madelief would be subconsciously open to that, having been away from her father for half of her life, but also conflicted if at times she felt like she was replacing him or something and that could carry on now that he's dead. Just brainstorming here.

I have a character concept in mind for a character who was a part of an all female Brazilian pilot's corp that handled the transport of planes to free up male pilots for front line fighting. I imagine her to have been one of the best pilots on the continent. This talent was recognized, and the government started sending her on secret missions. When her participation was discovered by the public, the government claimed that she was acting independently and grounded her, relocating her to guard duty at an isolated gold mine as punishment.

There, I imagined that she could have met Wolfgang. Maybe they could have formed a friendship of some sort, with him making her realize just how awful slavery is. Perhaps she could have aided with his escape. After that, I imagine her either being captured and nearly executed for her participation, before she escaped and joined the Wolves. This relationship is just an idea, though. My other idea was her quitting as soon as her government denied her coming into contact with the group some other way.

Does this character sound good to you, Danko? If not, I can totally think up something else. I just love this whole RP concept, and would really like to take part.

Gowia, your character looks good so far. It looks like he'll fit in with the others well, I'm looking forward to learning more about his history.

DancePants, I'm fine with the changes you've made. I'd probably say that Wolfgang would let her keep the plane because she had earned it by taking it in such a fashion, but I don't mind you writing it from Madelief's point of view so you can keep it as is. I'm also fine with you having Gowia's character having taught Medelief to fly.

Hi there AmazinglyVivid, I like your character idea. I liked your initial idea that her and Wolfgang meet when he was in South America, she could have accompanied him and Arturo Vargas back to Europe and joined up with them again after they form the Wolves. I'd be glad to have you on board if you want to go ahead and post a CS.

Yup, I'm perfectly happy with how Gowia did Frederik and Madelief's backstory bit and I've edited mine to be in line with it. I really like the character a lot, too!

I also edited the why behind Wolgang allowing her to keep the plane, since I thought that it'd be better to give a more truthful representation of Wolfgang's general attitude rather than throwing out completely unsubstantiated guesses from Madelief's point of view.

Welcome, Vivid! Your character sounds really interesting! Can't wait to see her full bio.

Here it is, then! I hope it's fine. Let me know if there are any noticeable contradictions against our established canon, and please forgive me any spelling/grammar mistakes you happen to find, as I am quite tired at the moment. I'll be giving it a read over tomorrow so I can properly edit it.

Your character looks good to me AmazinglyVivid, I just wanted to clarify. Was the slave who was derogatory to your character supposed to be Wolfgang or was that a different person? It wasn't 100% clear.

I did notice a few grammar mistakes but those are easily fixed and don't detract from what I think is an interesting character.

I'm likely not going to be active on here for the rest of the day so if I don't reply for a while don't think I'm ignoring you. I'm going to start work on an intro post soon and I'll compile everyone's characters into the original post next to my own. After that we can get this game rolling.

I just got to point this out:

Slaves, slavery having never been abolished, are the most valuable commodity in this area of the world and people pay high prices for healthy slaves and the Mediterranean is the place where most of the slave trade exists making it a highly sought after area by the powers of Europe.

Unless something really fucking wild happened in Europe, the slave trade should still be very much dead by this point in history. I highly doubt a lack of a Great War would have changed public opinion to re-legalize slavery after it was abolished in the 1700's.

Hell, by the time of Napoleon slavery would have been totally abolished throughout Europe, with the exception of the Ottoman Empire which abolished the practice in the Empire later in the 1880's. And there would have been a big enough European-styled political movement in the Empire (Young Turks) to keep slavery abolished (though shooting Armenians would still be in good taste).

For the rest of Europe, it would have been by the time this RP opens a lush two-hundred years of human trafficking being illegal. The political culture - shaped since the Enlightenment of the 1700's when abolition became a hot item - would very much frown on the concept of slavery and having slaves would be very much frowned upon.

It just seems crazy that out of the blue slavery would be a thing when the western powers get to sit on their African wealth. Sure the conditions would not have been optimal for labor (like the Congo Free State, which would have been abolished by the Belgian parliament and turned into the Belgian Congo), but there would have been rights at least. Otherwise, the only other "slave trader" nation that I could see existing would be the Turks. But they'd hardly have anyone around them to enslave but the local Kurdish and Armenian minority or criminals, and that's not much of an international market.

The United Kingdom has also been fairly aggressive politically and militarily in abolishing slavery throughout its reach since 1820. Given its rule of Gibraltr and Malta, it would have the naval bases need to enforce its say and assist other local Great Powers - like the Kingdom of Italy - in keeping the slaves Abolished. And the British Navy isn't exactly something that would go away.

Simply put, the slave trade in the European world - and for the most part beyond - would be dead.

While I thank you for your input please keep in mind this is a fictional version of our world. In this world slavery in Europe was never abolished, the relevant policies by the different countries you have mentioned never came into being. The institution of slavery in this world isn't out of the blue, it's been there for a long time and was never dead. The main changes in slavery throughout history in this world are the peoples who are being enslaved.

Plus this is a setting for an adventure story, I'm not a historian, nor am I a sociologist or expert on slavery. Just a history enthusiast who wants to create an adventure story that I can enjoy with some like minded people.

I still creates plot-holes big enough to sail the British Navy through. And the existence of the British Empire as it exists and Austria-Hungary to be around would suggest that in some way the European Enlightenment came to being, and with it the crash-course for abolitionism in Europe.

You simply can not keep a system like slavery running in a world of growing national and social consciousness. When Empires span across half the world and have in their borders so many different cultural ideologies it'll inevitably introduce ideas of pluralism in society and religion. If the system didn't break when it did on the real time-line, it would have sooner or later. The French Revolution would have seen to that and the Age of Liberalism.

I frankly can not find a lamp-shade big enough to hide the fact.

And slavery only really benefits a certain type of economy, namely the agricultural estate-holding economy. In societies who have industrialized - as would have happened in much of Europe by this point - the work of machines and industrial organization would have lessened the cost of labor enough making slavery a moot point. And no pay for work more dangerous than swinging a sickle in a field of wheat tends to make people angrier. Just ask czarist Russia.

Again, thanks for you input. You're clearly knowledgable on the subject. But frankly I'm totally fine with this world not making perfect sense to history buffs out there. I'm happy to accept the existence of magic, dragons and all manner of other things in fictional stories so I can live with anachronistic or historically incorrect institutions existing in this one . If you don't like the setting that's fine, you don't have to join this roleplay I'm certainly not forcing you. In fact I'm happy with the amount of players we have already and they seem to be able to accept the setting for what it is so that's enough for me.

I'd rather not fill the OOC with discussion that hasn't really got much bearing on the roleplay itself given that you don't seem to be interested in creating a character and joining in, so if you'd like to add anything else you're welcome to PM me rather than continue posting here. If not, good luck with your own creative works.
