Childish.

She thought while she continued to eat her stew in peace. Finally after some time Mika had managed to find some peaceful place after all. The food wasn't that bad in her opinion and she had only looked up from it when she had heard the trouble stirring up. Luckily an officer had put down the ruckus with a scolding. Not particular caring for it, as she wasn't part of that group, she continued to finish her dinner. When the others started to head back to their cabin, Mika started to socialize with some girls. It wouldn't hurt to become friendly with some other girls for now. Keeping up her act until she was under the sheets, Mika thought about today.

It hadn't went that bad in her opinion. She had made some ground and probably came over as a friendly person who also enjoyed some peace now and then, most during during. Or maybe she hadn't yet established that. But there was enough time to do so. Not really fretting over it, Mika listened to the soft whispers of some girls that spoke with each other. Probably friends of each other or people who could get along on already day one. Closing her eyes, Mika decided to ignore them.

Just need to... focus on my ... goal.

The next morning, all of the trainees were awakened and instructed to move to the training grounds where there were some strange contraptions set up. There were three poles set up, their bases connecting with invisible lines to become a triangle. They reached upwards to unite. From two of the poles, there were long wires hanging and staff members behind them, holding onto ropes connected to the wires over the top.

Today was a good day for Zachary Smith. He’d be able to kick out any loser who couldn’t do it on two tries which was quite exhilarating. He remembered the time he was a part of the Trainee Corps, the one time during his military career that he’d actually worked to get where he was.
Joseph had woken up rather early, covered in sweat. He sat up and climbed down to the lower area slowly and steadily, not wanting to bother anyone. He sat outside on the porch of the cabin, watching the sunrise from behind the mountains. After what felt like minutes, one of the staff members came banging on the door. "Rise and shine! To the training grounds in 10 minutes in full uniform!"

There were some indistinct moans heard from inside. Joseph marched right back in to get the clothing they were given the day before. It was just the jacket and boots, however. At least that was what they were told to wear the day before. There were also the familiar straps used to keep the 3DMG in place. He seemed to be able to put it on quite quickly and easily, as if knowing what he was doing. Afterwards, he put on his boots and his jacket. He looked over to Jay, seeing how he was doing.

His eyes opening wide, Samuel awoke, already fully alert. The quiet murmur of people waking in the cabin had been enough to rouse him from his light sleep. Looking around, Samuel was relieved to see that the bunk beside him remained empty. He lay there, unmoving for a moment longer, simply listening to the sounds around him.

It didn’t take long for him to hear the staff member calling out for them to gather for training. Swinging down from his bunk, Samuel gathered his gear and began dressing in uniform. Staring for a long moment at the strange array of straps, he was unfamiliar with how to put them on. Samuel puzzled over it for a moment, before looking up to see how the others were doing it. A few of the trainees looked like they were in the same boat as him, but he noticed a couple of the boys who seemed to know what they were doing. Watching closely, Samuel copied their movements, moving the straps into position. When he was finished, he exited the cabin and made his way towards the training grounds.

As he lay there among his sleeping comrades, Jay was wide-awake. A light sigh escaped his lips as he closed his eyes, trying to get some shut-eye. However, he was nervous for what would come tomorrow. Hopefully, he would be able to meet his sister, after being separated from her from a whole day. He could only wonder how Noelle was holding up on her own.

Eyes flutter open as soon as Jay heard some banging and yelling. The man had said training grounds. Training. He would finally be able to use 3DMG. He sat up, stretching as his hand ruffled his bed-hair before getting dressed. He easily put on the straps used for the 3DMG, already somewhat familiarized by it from prior experience. He then looked over to Joseph, who was also fully-dressed. "Morning," he cheerfully said, grinning as he made his way out of the cabin.
Noelle found her seat, quietly eating her meal when she realized Scarlet was no where to be found. She felt an overwhelming feeling of disappointment, wondering where her new-found friend had gone to. Minutes passed and there was a food-fight in it's beginning stages. Noelle could only stare and eat, silently chuckling to herself when the little event ended as quickly as it had started. She then found herself on a bunk, surrounded by people she didn't know. Somewhat uncomfortable, she drifted off into a fitful sleep.

By the time the man had yelled out to wake the trainees, Noelle was already awake. Immediately, she shot up from her bed, filled with exuberance. Finally, she would be able to do something she was more familiar with. She began to put on her uniform and then came across some straps for the 3DMG. It took her a while, but she had finally managed to place it in the correct position. Before long, she was skipping out of the cabin, eager to see brother.

Mika slowly opened her eyes. She wasn't really in a good mood. Last night she hadn't been able to sleep that well. Either due that her neighbors decided to talk for some time or because she was anxious for some real training. Either way, when they were told to get up, Mika first yawned and looked around her. Getting out of her bed, she kept her lips sealed. Only a friendly smile and nod to those who wished her a good morning or asked if she was looking forward to the training. Of course I am, you stupid cows. I can't wait until I can leave you all eating dirt while I am tasting freedom. Were her thoughts as she got dressed in her uniform. Wondering if she would get a clean one if this one would become quite dirty, Mika decided to put her focus on what would be their first training.

Heading out of the cabin, she was wondering what their training would be. A drill? Maybe some self defense skill? In either way, she was just eager to get something to be done. Certainly if it was self defense, cause Mika deemed herself capable of handling herself in a scuffle. At least that was with the other orphan children, often fighting mean and dirty. Hopefully the instructors wouldn't look down on such behavior during combat training. Else Mika had to think of something.

The morning was as hectic as the day before. Viktor was up long before first light, lazily dressing himself, preparing that day's daytime meal, and so forth. Today was evaluation and basic training. As Viktor passed by the other officers, he gave each one a friendly smile and a "Good morning" or "Ready for today?". The other officers grumbled or ignored Viktor, hardly any of them very fond of his cheery demeanor. Viktor shrugged his shoulders and continued towards the 3DMG simulation structures; the broad wooden poles towering over the grounds. Viktor smiled, the sight of the frame made him reminisce of the good days, granted that he was a complete failure at first. A few other officers came in behind him, as they were also handlers for the equipment and cables. They were all from the Survey Corps, but not from the same squad as Viktor, since none of them even bothered to acknowledge his presence. "Yikes, tough crowd." Thought Viktor, cleaning of his monocle on his shirt. He would hopefully be of more assistance than these dead beats at least, and possibly more forgiving than Zachary; but not so much as to baby the cadets. Viktor stood attention, eyes straight forward, legs apart, and hands behind his back, ready for the evaluation to begin.

"This is the elimination process to see who's capable of using the 3DMG. You will be strapped onto these contraptions and be raised from the ground. Your job is to stay upright, got it? Step forward when your name is called," announced one of the garrison members working there. Each officer in front of the training contraption called out a name.

"Isra Aceline! Jay Ahn! Noelle Ahn! Samuel Drake! Joseph Dumoulin!"

Hearing his name being announced, Joseph stepped to the centre of the contraption. The man handed him the dangling strips like every officer there did to the other recruits. The boy quickly attached it to the side of his waist. Once everyone was ready, the man who'd made the first announcement nodded towards the instructors, who pulled on a rope slowly yet steadily raising them from the ground. Joseph relaxed his upper body and balanced his lower, floating steadily and somewhat easily. He didn't seem stressed or worried at all, not even focusing. He looked over to the others to see how they were doing.

Noelle exhaled once she heard her name called. She was nervous, almost frightened at the thought of failing. Her brother was also going to be judged along with her. What if she got kicked out in front of him? Jay would certainly hate her. She needed to be there for him! Noelle contemplated on running away, until another boy with a notable scar on his face went up first. Curious, she watched him for a bit before catching sight of a familiar face as well. Jay was second to get to the device and was soon strapped onto the machine. The two rose fairly well, both steady and without an inkling of fear in their eyes.

Jay caught sight of Noelle, raising his hand to give a small wave and a dashing grin before looking at the boy next to him. A small gesture that gave Noelle confidence. She went up to the device and took the straps, attaching them to their respective spots. She closed her eyes, her legs feeling like jelly and her stomach doing turn-overs. Before long, she rose as well, only trembling slightly during the ascent.

"Oh yea, she's my sister," Jay said to Joseph, pointing at Noelle. "Joseph, this is Noelle. Noelle this is Joseph."

Noelle opened one eye to glance at the two boys before shutting it, desperately trying to maintain her concentration. Gods! Why was her brother trying to strike up a conversation during their test?

This was getting interesting, Mika thought. She had followed the others to see what kind of training would be given. And with her name not being called, Mika just stood near the front rows to see how it would go. Placing her hands on her back, she eyed several of those who had to step forward. Recognizing one of the girls she had met on the first day, Mika pondered if she should cheer for the girl. She had looked shy and maybe easy to manipulate to think well of her. Not that Mika was sure if she could have much use of Noelle, but one ally was better than another enemy.

Placing her hands eventually near her mouth, to hopefully increase her the volume of her voice, Mika shouted towards Noelle. ''Go Noelle!'' Waving for a moment, Mika hoped that the other girl could see her. Whipping up a smile on her lips, Mika would examine how everybody would do this training until it was her turn. Maybe she could pick up on how one had to perform in order to not fail this test. That and knowing who she should befriend in order to get advise on how to improve herself if she wouldn't be good at it.

Stepping forwards without a shred of emotion on his face, Samuel walked towards the instructors and allowed them to hook him into the contraption and begin raising him up. As he was lifted from the earth, Samuel realized that his balance was off and he began swinging back and forth ever so slightly. Not wanting to become off balance, he adjusted himself, trying to match the relaxed position that two of the other boys were already in. It took him some time to get it right, but Samuel managed to stop himself from swinging, and hung there motionlessly.

His mind was already working fast to try and figure out what the purpose of this training was going to be. In some way they were going to have to prove that they could use the 3DMG's, but so far none of the instructor's had even bothered to give the slightest of hints as to how the equipment worked. Glancing down at the strange looking contraption, Samuel wanted to see if he could puzzle it out himself, hoping that when the time came, he would not end up looking like a fool in front of everyone. Not that he cared about what they thought, but he also wanted to be able to simply remain in the background, and if he ended up failing spectacularly, then everyone would notice him.

Continuing to examine the equipment, Samuel was pulled ever higher by the instructors...

Joseph leaned forward, pushing his legs the same way, pressuring the straps to keep balanced. He looked over to the girl Jay had pointed out to and saw that she was unresponsive. He then recalibrated himself and straightened his back. "Maybe we should let her concentrate," he said, chuckling. "You're doing pretty well though!"

Jay grinned, shrugging slightly as he continued to keep his balance. "I think she's better as this whole 3DMG thing than me," he proudly said. "She just needs to be more confident in herself." Noelle grumbled at what her brother said, somewhat displeased. To her, it was quite the opposite; Jay had a lot more bravado and was fearless. Nevertheless, the girl started to loosen up. She stopped trembling and opened her eyes.

"Oh." Was all she could mutter out. It wasn't that bad actually. She was doing well, like Joseph had said and the instructors didn't make any moves to throw her out. "Ah, manners!" she thought, turning her head slightly to Joseph. "It's very nice to meet you. Thanks for putting up with Jay," Noelle said, her lips tugging into a small smile.

Joseph almost laughed at Noelle's last comment about Jay. "Likewise," he said with a smile, suppressing the amused visage in order to avoid trouble with the officers. "Looks like we're all gonna pa--" Just as he was about to finish his sentence, the boy stumbled, now lying sideways. He'd quickly kicked his legs to make sure he wouldn't go further down. He took a quick breath and pushed his upper body back up. "--pass."

The two siblings stared at Joseph as he lost his balance, lying sideways. Jay sputtered something incomprehensible whilst Noelle's eyes slid to the instructors. The mean one had a wicken grin on his face as he opened his mouth to scream out 'fail', but Joseph managed to regain his balance, pushing himself up with force. Jay rolled his eyes, a sigh of relief escaping his lips. "Thank goodness," he breathed out. Noelle just grinned. "Since we all pass," she began. "Can we get off this thing?" She made a point to stare at the instructors.

The three instructors shared a look and sighed. The one who lifted Jay spoke with a kind tone. "Chief Zachary gets to decide," he said. "Though you seem to be doing fine. You just have to wait until he says you're good to go."

Joseph huffed upon hearing this. "Chief Zachary... The guy from yesterday," he muttered. He turned to Jay and Noelle after glancing at the military policeman who was observing them with an almost sadistic look on his face. There was no way that guy would start before people fell over. "What made you two join the military? Other than, you know, wanting to get the hell out of your city."

He couldn't help but let out a soft groan of digust when his instructor had mentioned that Chief Zachary had the final say. All three of the trainees had their eyes on the Chief. Jay had a rebellious look on his face while Noelle had an expectant but otherwise calm face. The siblings were prepared to hear a 'pass' from the stern man, however, they got a question to answer. Jay pursed his lips before answering first.

"I'm going to join the Scouting Legion," he clearly said, determination flaring in his eyes. "I'm going to open the outside world and free humanity."

Noelle glanced over at Jay, feeling a glimmer of pride for her brother as she looked back at the Chief.

Joseph heaved a sigh as he heard Jay's explanation. "I know, I know," he said. "That's not what I'm asking. What made you guys--" His attention turned to the void created where the Chief was standing. "Let's continue later. I don't want to give that guy an excuse."

Zachary Smith was already scanning through the recruits, failing the ones who were upside down with a maniacal smile on his face.

He scanned through the successful recruits and nodded at their instructors with slight amusement. The instructors lowered Samuel, Joseph, Jay and Noelle, informing that they were good to go.

"Next batch! Mika Smyth! Susan Borne! Darek Myst! Felipe Abar! Erin Fulbart! Mikael Daeryn! Alexander Éan! Thomas Erhart!"

It had been quite strange when he returned here for the second time. His second time as a trainee. The Military police hadn't offered him much of an alternative, but considering the circumstances they had let him off quite lightly. Sadly, due to the fact that his last time as a trainee he had dropped out to return home after two long years of training, he had to do it all over again. From the start. The first day he had been too melancholic to do anything but think of the friends he had made during those years, and of the reasons he had come here. Peter... That fucking bastard... If he just hadn't... That stupid boy should've listened to him when it wasn't too late. Now Ralph, Elliot and Eline were dead, their parents traumatized for life, and Nicole stuck with them. Peter had also joined the military, but in another trainee camp, while Nicole had remained with their parents, as promised by the MP. Yes, he had gotten off lightly. Murder and desertion, both crimes for which he could easily hang, and instead both were officially declared void, in exchange for servie to the nation. And here he was again.

The next day started with the basic ability tests, to see if one was able at all to become a soldier. When he was raised into the sky it took not a moment to get used to being suspended by wires again, and he felt his confidence gather again. There was no need to let his past influence his actions here. He had learned to love being a soldier, and to take pride in his skills, and all that he would have to do was forget about his family left in ruins. His last act as the protective older brother was to sacrifice his future as a free man and become a soldier to ensure their safety, aswell as to give Peter a new future, away from the family he had hurt so much. He had done enough. Now it was time for himself to shine. Balancing on the wires with obvious ease as if he was born into them, he sent the instructors a pleased look as even they blinked twice as if they could not believe their eyes. "Trainee Thomas Erhart, you passed." The man said sheepishly, upon which Thomas descended and walked back to the row with a pleased smirk. He saw several looks of admiration and jealousy alike, and one or two of indifference or disgust, and he enjoyed that. Let them writhe in their frustration, while I show them how it's done.

Forming back in the line he intercepted part of an ongoing conversation and decided to join in. "So you were thinking about the Survey Corps eh?"

Joseph turned to the new voice. He studied the well built figure quickly, flashing a friendly yet forged smile. "Yes, yes," he said, sighing. While he didn't know what kind of a person this guy was, it was quite possible that he was just another one of the degenerative asses who just wanted to get into the MP and was just there to make fun of people who want to join the Survey Corps. He glanced over at Jay, expecting another speech about how he was going to change the world, help humanity.
Zachary noticed the ex-recruit get ready to rejoin the military. He wasn't about to allow a mutt like him reach the top 10 and kick out a potential MP member from the division. There was quite a bit of potential that had to be... pointed in the right direction. After several more groups, the ones who didn't have the potential were weeded out. It was once again free time for the recruits.
One of the ex-Survey Corpsmen had distributed the 3DMG earlier after the explanation of its function during the third day. It was the first time they were actually taken to practice with the gear. They were brought to the edge of the forest with the tall trees. "Alright, trainees! Listen up," yelled the soldier. "You will be performing some basic manoeuvres. There are some checkpoints set for you and there will be instructors waiting around the forest to check your levels. You all know how to work the gear. First row, into the forest and second, follow close."
Joseph looked around, seeing that most people were holding both of the grips the same way, upright. He was used to keeping one reversed. The boy smiled as this was the first time he'd get to use the gear in a few weeks. He looked around once more, spotting Jay but quickly boosted himself after seeing the others move as well, getting some distance between himself and the others.

Thomas Erhart - Forest

As days passed and he got used to the daily rythm of the army again, he couldn't help but smile at the slow progress of the new recruits. It was both nostalgic and funny to see them struggle with excercises he had once struggled with, and could now perform with relative ease. And so they arrived at the very first 3dmg excercise, a clumsy struggle throgh the local forest that always ended in a dozen of bruises and painful accidents, none too serious, but all certainly hilarious. He himself found himself in the first row, and quickly got moving throughthe forest. His previous experience was a devastating asset in clearing this excericise without any trouble, even though he had never completed his training. At this point he might not be as good as a real soldier, but he was easily better than all of these guys combined. Once the assistant gave the green sign, he grinned at his fellow trainees.

"Let's not keep them waiting, right?" He said, and bursted off.

Days passed after the first test and the following days were filled with training. Of course, Jay went through them using all of his strength and kept bugging Joseph about 'saving the world' and such. Eventually, he found himself tired - a tired of waiting tired. While he wasn't exactly the best using 3DMG or other fighting skills, Jay thought he was more than prepared enough to face the titans. Noelle would just sigh at her brother, quietly wondering if he had hit his head when he was a baby. The girl would follow her brother everywhere, silently tagging along with him and Joseph. She would occasionally greet Alice and talk to her about some other topics and would wander around the girl's barracks looking for Scarlet. Eventually, after three days, Noelle gave up on looking for Scarlet.

Today, the recruits were sent at the edge of the forest, with their 3DMG gear on. The instructor yelled at a few commands, and off they went. Joseph and the boy from before rushed head along, with Jay hot on their heels. Eventually, he lost sight of Joseph and somehow knew Noelle was just a few meters behind him. He heard a faint crash, but didn't stop to look or help. Instead, he increased his speed, quickly catching up to the first row people.
Like that, Noelle hadn't looked where she was going, gracefully slamming into a tree limb. The wood snapped on impact, and she fell. Out of the corner of her eye, Jay had already surged on ahead. Noelle couldn't help but chuckle a bit, before turning mid-air and continued on as if she hadn't just crashed. As she continued moving, her right shoulder and chest slightly burned, but she ignored the pain. A couple of bruises wouldn't kill her.

Mika sighed. Rubbing the left side of her neck, she wasn't in the best mood. Though she kept acting nice to others, she still had fresh memories of the 3DMG training. In her first try she had found it both exciting as scary. Only by probably a sheer amount of luck had she managed to pass it. Though she hadn't heard anything that was bad with her performance, Mika had been close on the verge of puking and screaming. What kind of crazy scientist had ever developed something like that? She would be sooner killed by that damn 3DMG gear than that she would be crushed, eaten or any other way killed by a titan. Not really a comforting thought, but Mika couldn't really take it as anything positive.

The only good news was that she had passed. Together with others that had passed, Mika kept trying to increase people that seemed to be useful for later. Though she kept her socializing at a minimum. It would become too troublesome or worse if somebody would start questioning why she was trying to befriend so many people. With still keeping in touch with Noelle, Mika decided that she would sooner or later try to gain some connection with a better student. If she could find somebody who could teach her how to use that darn 3DMG gear better, she would have a better chance of gaining the success she wanted for her goal. Though she knew it was silly to keep thinking and looking that far away in the future, it was also the only thing that kept her motivated to keep on going.

During the next few trainings that followed, Mika managed to become better. Not that great, but just average. Which was for now good enough for her. For all she cared, everybody that wanted could go to the MP and become some fat pigs that would defend the king. And those who wished to join the Survey Corps being nom'ed by titans. Her wish for true freedom was all that she cared for. Only her goal and getting better was the most important!
Stay focused...Focused! Mika thought. She bite her lower lip as she directed the right hook into a thick branch. Using the gas to speed herself up, Mika kept her legs ready as she would prepare to make the turn. Squinting her eyes, she managed to time her action. With a movement, she planted her feet at the bask of the tree, kicking herself off the tree while giving more gas, to maneuver in a faster way while turning. Releasing the hook, she would direct herself in a faster way forward. Maybe this isn't so bad as it first wa-

''Oef!'' Mika had calculated her turn not that great. With the fast speed, she felt how a few branches hit her right shoulder. It wasn't that painful, but she was surprised and had almost crashed against a tree. Managing to direct the left hook into another tree to her left, she managed to correct herself to stay in the path she wanted to fly. Though she wanted to rub the painful spot, Mika tried to focus again. If I ever find the developer of this hell thing, I will...

After he had finished the first test with the 3DMG, Samuel knew he wanted to get back in one as soon as possible. He wasn't afraid of heights like some kids were; as a matter of fact growing up that trait had been incredibly helpful when he and his brother had needed to make a quick getaway after stealing food or clothes from the street vendors. Samuel had learned very quickly how to navigate and maneuver through the district, often times climbing high up onto the roofs in order to move more freely.

The fact that this device would allow him to maneuver to any height with ease was a very attractive idea to him. He knew that it would take quite some time to get used to the way the 3DMG worked, and for once he found that he was excited about the prospect of learning. Reluctantly he took off the gear and gave it back to the trainer. His thoughts immediately travelled back to what he would do when he was in the gear next,
The next few days, Samuel followed the same routine, spending as much of his time as possible alone, and using every opportunity that he could to examine and observe the 3DMG system in use. The time they spent in the classroom learning about how the device worked helped Samuel's understanding significantly. He was excited about the prospect of getting to use the 3DMG again, but on the outside he appeared just as apathetic as always.

Each time he got to put the gear on, Samuel tried to learn something new. He discovered fairly quickly that he had a knack for maneuvering with the 3DMG. He kept this hidden as much as he could from the other recruits and the trainers. Samuel wanted to remain anonymous for as long as possible, but any chance that he could he refined his ability to move around with the equipment.

And then the day came when they were going to be able to take the 3DMG's and use them to navigate through the forest. For the first time in as long as he could remember, Samuel was excited for the future, even if it was only going to be temporary.
"Second Row! Move out!" The instructor bellowed out to the remaining recruits. Standing amongst the recruits in the second row, Samuel needed no further warning. Launching both of his hooks into a high branch, he applied just enough gas to get him moving with some speed as he reeled in the lines. Entering the forest, Samuel detached both of his hooks and allowed his momentum to carry him forwards a ways. Spotting another nearby tree, Samuel launched his right hook into it and shifted his weight so that he swung around the tree with speed. Withdrawing his hook he continued moving through the forest, following close behind the first row.

The trainees all slowly moved forward, a few of them crashing into the ground once every few seconds. Joseph was moving rather quickly, a smile of glee painted on his face. I missed this... He swung under a branch, letting go of his body for a moment, flipping backwards with the hook detached from the branch. He shot the other hook forward, continuing the swinging motion.
The officers overlooked the trainee's initial performances, noting the details of their skills. There were some uncannily skilled new recruits. As they kept moving forward, the trainees continued practicing with the gear slowly. As the hours progressed, they were brought out of the forest once more, retrieving the 3D gear. The trainees were once more sent to the "classroom" to learn about the titans rather than the 3DMG like the had the days earlier.
There was a figure drawn on the chalkboard looking away, the nape of its neck circled. The instructor crossed his arms and turned to the seated trainees. "... which is why humanity has been struggling against such mindless enemies. Not simply because of their strength, size and speed but also because of their uncanny regenerative abilities that know no limits."
One of the trainees uttered a few words. "So they're invincible," stupefied the boy said.
"Not exactly," said the instructor. He pointed at the encircled area behind the figure drawn on the wall. "This part of the titan is responsible of the regeneration of its body. When you cut it off, but only when you cut it off, can you kill the titan. That's why the gear has two swords, so that you can tear it from the body entirely. To learn how to do that, once you've become more proficient with the 3D gear, you will be training with titan dummies in the forest...."
After the lesson was finished, Joseph looked at his notes one more time to see what they should be expecting.
"
3-year military acceptance training

  • Hand-to-hand combat

  • Climbing

  • Varied team exercises

  • 3DMG proficiency

  • Maintenance of 3DMG

  • Strategy courses
"

"More about titans.... 3DMG theory of use..." Sighing, the boy put his notebook away, making his way towards the cabins along with the rest of the group.

Thomas Erhart and Joseph Dumoulin

A collab by Sketcher and Roran

As the days morphed into weeks that seamlessly streamed past his consciousness he fell back into the old training rythmn. Thanks to his two years experience though, he shone at every simple excercise the instructors threw at him, and his confidence as a soldier kept growing. His duty of protecting his family was over. Now he would look farther, and protect all of mankind. Despite the instructors trying to break his confidence, any challenge thrown at him was overcome, if not at first, it was eventually, and he earned the jealousy aswell as admiration of the other trainees. And he didn't mind that at all.

It was about a month into the training program when he met Joseph Dumoulin, during the hand-to-hand combat training. Thomas, having grown up beating people up, having had this entire training session before and gratefully used it in practice already, was looking forwards to defeating this young man in front of him. He didn't look out of shape, not that anyone still looked out of shape right now, but this guy looked as if he was taking the training as serious as Thomas himself.

"Hi, my name's Thomas." He said, awaiting the guy to charge him with the knife.

Joseph was paired up with the one guy who had passed him in 3DMG, as he had remarked. He was holding the wooden knife lightly as he faced the trainee introducing himself as "Thomas". "Pleasure," he simply said, looking at his opponent with menacing eyes. He wasn't really annoyed by Thomas himself and nor was he trying to be rude. He was mostly bothered by the fact that this guy might just be able to throw him on the ground. "Joseph Dumoulin," the boy introduced himself before spinning the wooden knife in his palm quickly and gripping it once more, lunging at his opponent with the knife close to his own stomach and his other hand put forward.

Thomas snak a little bit throuh his knees as the other person attacked, and noticed that the other guy was doing the smart thing. If you were attacking an unarmed person with a knife you had to do so furiously and so that he would have little chance to grab your knife. As Joseph's hand went for his collar he grabbed it with his right hand and redirected it to pass over his own shoulder while he stepped diagonally forwards himself, using his left foot as a sweeping branch to knock his opponent on his face.

Seeing the hand pass towards his collar, Joseph quickly reached his free hand to push the hand away but before he knew it, the boy found himself on the ground. Feeling some pain radiating from his face, Joseph continued to clutch the knife, looking more irritated than before.

Offering his hand to the guy on the ground who now wore a nigh venomous look on his face, he burst into laughter. "Hey, I've done this before. Keep up the good work!" He encouraged the younger kid and got him up his feet again.

Joseph took the hand and got up. "What do you mean you've done this before?" he asked curiously. While they had done this training a few times during the passing weeks, putting himself aside from the others, it was like Thomas was suggesting that he had more experience with the exercise itself. Joseph turned the knife in his hand, grabbing it by the wooden blade and holding the handle out towards Thomas.

Suddenly he cursed his large mouth and shrugged. "I grew up in a ... rough place." He replied, trying not to sound as if he had murdered a criminal gang leader, and several of his thugs, not even three months ago, using the same skills he was using now. He accepted the dagger and took some distance, ready to attack. "Anyways, my turn to be the starving orphan trying to kill you for food."

Yes. Joseph was a good kid.
He could brightly remember how annoying the climbing courses were as he felt his fingernail bend under the weight of his body, as he blindly searched for a place to support his right foot with. Oof, there it was. Continuing up the cliff, keeping in mind the 'three out of four' principle, he dared glancing below him, where the rest of his group of trainees was way behind. Except Joseph ofcourse, slowly catching up to him now he paused. "That damn brat." He mused, and started climbing up again. Always three support points and one arm or leg looking for a new support. Repeating the principle as he climbed in his head as a sort of mantra, he reached the top.

Carefully climbing up with the rope tied around his waist and up to the top of the rock cliff. He kept his eyes on Thomas and he stopped moving for the few moments they locked eyes. He went on to climb quicker, getting some cuts on his legs from grinding on to the rocks while doing so, still careful not to fall.
The team excercises were one of his favorite parts. He had always been the leader of his gang of brothers and sisters, and leading this bunch of trainees, all younger than him, made him think of the good old days in the streets of Trost. It only helped that due to his skill, however much cheated, unbeknownst to the other recruits, gave him a natural air of competence that the others gladly followed.
He grinned in an almost mean fashion as he swirled around the trees fluently as ever, ignoring the occasional branch whipping into his face, as he sped ahead of the other recruits in the obstacle parcour. Swinging around a thick tree he found himself encountered with a large and treaturously hard cushion quickly moving his way, which he managed to avoid smoothly by reeling out his wire and lowering altitude. Glancing behind him he saw the first movements of the trainees catching up as he dawdled, when one of the instructors cut his wire. spinning in the air at a high speed he managed to land his second hook and regain control over his flight in the nick of time, and continued the last few dozens of meters towards the exit, proudly awaiting the other trainees as he gave the instrutor an accomplished look. He'd probably regret that.

For Joseph, trees were tricky. He was used to long buildings and small streets to navigate. Though this wasn't that different, he could still feel the difference of speed between the two areas. There were some rare titan dummies hidden behind the trees that would spin around just as the area came into the trainees' sights. He noticed a familiar figure in the distance. What the... He clenched his teeth and made two quick sharp turns around two paralleled trees, around the tree Thomas was on, looking at him, bewildered. Seeing how he was waiting, Joseph decided to stick to the tree, resting his back against it.
Ofcourse, then there were the courses. He switched between an attitude of 'know-it-all' and utter and complete disinterest as he attended class after class, all of which he had done already. He knew everything about how to fight titans, how to maintain and repair his 3DMG, what history there was of mankind, how to operate cannons... Depending on the subject and teacher, he either slept or answered nearly every question he posed, much to the annoyance of some teachers and pupils alike.
teaing from the rather nice stew that was served in the cafetaria in the evening he jgnored most of the ruckus going on around him as the trainees arrived to get their own plate of food and make an awful lot of teenage squabling for a supposedly disciplined regiment of soldiers. He had as usually arrived first, and found himself alone on his table, with others filling up fast.
