  • Please do not post anything else here, all questions and comments should go to the OOC thread.

Character Sheet (Template Here)

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Rank:
Ethnicity/Nationality: Will allow for an ARVN translator.

Physical Description:
It's probably best to actually describe the character if you are going to rely on a picture, or you can do without the picture if you like, but definitely describe.

Skillset:
Talents one has either naturally or through education or training of some sort.

History:
Explain your character's background, from birth, to enlistment, to now. This will give me an understanding of who they are, which could mean everything if I drop a crisis down on their heads- or if I have to control them.

Equipment:
  • Weapon list here. Please make sure your choice makes sense, i.e the M1 Garand had been largely phased out by now, and members of the 1st Cavalry would be using M16 variants as their standard rifle.

Name: Anthony "Buck" Barnes
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Rank: PFC
Ethnicity/Nationality: African-American

Physical Description:

Skillset:
He attended basic training and AIT at Fort Benning and Fort Polk, Louisiana (the infamous "Tigerland") before being deployed to Vietnam. He's about a third way through his tour and has seen some combat so that he's considered a veteran. Favors the shotgun in a fight because he and Derricks had a close encounter once and his M16 jammed; he broke it over the cong's head, whereupon he learned that the M-16 was also not very suitable for close combat use.

Has a bit of mechanical skill by learning from his dad, who knew how to keep a car running and had a knack of machinery.

Serves as the assistant machinegunner for PFC Derricks, helping haul the ammo and keep the gun running.

History:
From the Bronx, his father is a cabbie and he was trying to get into CUNY (but didn't have enough money) to get in before the draft got him; as he likes to put it, "The army was there with a stage hook, waitin' for my black ass to graduate from high school."

He was drafted in late 1966 and put through Benning, then Polk, and then sent to Vietnam as part of the First Cavalry Division.

Equipment:
  • Winchester Model 1912 Shotgun, loaded with #4 buckshot (standard issue ammo in the era). Also makes a hell of a hash pipe. He made a sling out of paracord, woven extra wide and with a couple rings in it so that he can configure it to carry as a single point if necessary, which is usually how he carries it.
  • Jungle Fatigues, boots, and so forth. Threadbare looking because Vietnam is hot and humid and quickly wears down the clothing. His have some holes in them.
  • Two web belts and shotgun shell pouches formed into bandoleers. It's where he got his nickname from.
  • GI towel, extra pair of socks, foot powder and so forth. A lot of this goes in a buttpack.
  • M1956 suspenders/web gear with two canteens and other sundries.
  • Steel pot with cover, "Too Young To Vote; Ain't Too Young To Die" written on cover
  • Three M26 frags, stored in a spare canteen pouch.
  • M1942 Machete, over the shoulder.
  • E-tool, canteens, and so forth.
  • Buddhist prayer beads. Not precisely frowned upon, but not entirely considered on the up and up by more officious officers.
  • Extra ammo for the pig, spare parts for the pig.
  • Oil, rag, and brushes for weapon cleaning.
  • Tape player and a fine collection of Motown and, gold in Vietnam, James Brown's latest stuff, including the funky "Cold Sweat." Prized possession.
  • Other equipment as necessary. I'm positive I left some out.

Bobby's very skinny, just barely above the Army's minimum weight requirement. He has put on weight since carrying the Pig around has improved his upper body strength. Name: Chris Hoffman
Age: 18, born Sept. 14, 1949
Gender: Male
Rank: Private
Ethnicity/Nationality: White
Physical Description: Standing an even six feet tall, he is lanky nearly to the point of skinny but his muscles are lean and wiry. His blonde hair cut short from basic training but it is growing out. Despite his fair coloring, he tans well from the years on the beaches, his bright green eyes standing out even behind the thick Army issue glasses. He wears his father's watch and a silver ring given to him by his girlfriend.

Skillset: Chris is trained as a rifleman and a radio operator. Naturally relaxed and calm, he deals with stress fairly well and thus makes an ideal for his job.
History:
Born in San Jose, California, Chris grew up with two younger sisters and a domineering father who pushed him to play sports that he never showed an interest in, especially football. His childhood was normal and when he was 12 he started working for his dad at his hardware shop. Chris saved up enough to buy his first surfboard which his father promptly confiscated and sawed in half with the excuse that surfing was too dangerous. Furious but unable to do anything about it, Chris pretended to be cool with it but secretly began to save up and when he was 14 got a scooter. That was when he began to run away for weekends at the beach, testing out the chilly Northern Californian waters. By 16 he was skipping school to travel down to LA, surfing and camping on the beach. His father gave him the ultimatium to move out or stay home but no more running off. Having made older friends in SoCal, Chris packed his bags and left, enrolling himself in school with an aunt's address who lived in Pico Rivera. He scraped by with odd jobs in construction and selling weed, somehow managing to graduate with a C average. His summer went by in a blur of sand, surf, and acid marked by two major instances. He met his girlfriend Diana and his draft number was called. He considered moving to Canada or Mexico, as he can speak decent Spanish since his grades were shitty and he was too broke for college. His father refused to help him pay for it, citing that he had served in the Army in Europe when he was called up. Before he knew it, Chris was having his long sun bleached hair shaved off and some dude that wasn't his father screaming in his face. He made it through boot camp well enough, he was physically fit though he struggled with tactics as it was something he was never interested in. Chris tried to get in with the Corps of Engineers but when that did not work out he decided to become a radio operator. He is currently in his second month of his year tour.

Equipment:
  • M-16A1 rifle, extra magazines
  • PRC-25 field radio
  • Fatigues, boots, extra socks, bandana
  • Helmet with a peace sign drawn on one side and the words "Hang Loose!" on the other
  • 2 WP, 2 colored smoke grenades, 2 frag grenades
  • 35 millimeter camera, pack of Kools containing some handrolled 'cigarettes', zippo lighter, picture of his girlfriend in his wallet, dogtags
  • Army issue knife, C-rations, towel, canteens, machete, extra radio batteries (etc I'll fill in as I'm able to do the proper research)
  • Looted AK-47, 3 magazines

Name:Ryan Davis
Age:33
Gender:Male
Rank:E-7 / Sergeant First Class
Ethnicity/Nationality:Scotch-Irish American

Physical Description:SFC Davis stands at roughly average height, and weighs in at 190lbs. His dark brown hair is kept in a neat medium-fade, per Army uniform regulations, and when time allows he ensures that his jaw is clean-shaven in compliance with accepted military standards. Despite his rigid adherence to military uniform protocols, his blue eyes often sparkle with good humor. His has two tattoos; the 17th Infantry buffalo on his left shoulder, and his “meat tags” on the right side of his ribcage. Shrapnel scars mar his right thigh and shoulder, courtesy of his trip to Korea.

Skillset:This is Ryan’s third tour to Vietnam and his fourth combat tour in all, so he has a wealth of experience and practical knowledge to draw upon. The various leadership courses he’s attended give him a solid grasp of tactics, and his 15 years in the grunts have made him a solid marksman. His most valuable “skills” are his ability to keep a cool head under fire, and to appear confident and collected even when he isn’t sure of himself.

History:Born in 1934, Ryan was raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, hiking and hunting as soon as he could hold a rifle. High school was uneventful (thanks to a veteran father who kept him under a tight but fair rein), and he spent most of his free time in the mountain trails or riding his Harley with his dad and uncles. There was never any doubt that he’d end up in the military. His father had fought the Nazis in World War II, and when Ryan enlisted in 1952 he threw himself eagerly into the Army life. He served in the final days of Korea as a young soldier in 1953, and was involved in the hellish campaign for Pork Chop Hill with Kilo Company, 17th Infantry, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his actions during the battle. His first ‘Nam deployment came in 1963, his second in 1965. Now, as a Platoon Sergeant for the 1st Cav, he’s four months into his third tour. Ryan’s personal leadership method of “loving aggression” with his troops has led him to success so far; he treats his men fairly but accepts no half-assing, preferring to lead with a firm hand rather than the iron fist often employed by Staff NCOs.

Equipment:
  • M16A1 with spare magazines
  • Colt M1911 .45 pistol, often issued to machine gunners and medics, and standard issue for Staff NCOs and Officers.
  • US Army Gerber Mark II fighting knife
  • Standard troop fair (rations, towel, canteens, etc.) and his helmet (unadorned, per Army regulation
  • 3 M26 Fragmentation Grenades
  • Map and compass with map pens, and a notebook containing his “Platoon Sgt Cheat Sheets” for calling artillery, air support, and the like.
  • A picture of his wife and two daughters, carried inside his helmet.
  • One of his younger brother’s spare dog tags, worn on the tag chain next to his own. His brother is a Marine, currently deployed near Da Nang.
  • A piece of shrapnel about 2 inches across, kept as a good-luck charm from Korea.
  • Several cans of Copenhagen. Sometimes he thinks it's the only thing keeping him from choking out his more unruly men.

Name: Elijah Dodgers
Nicknames: Dodge
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Rank: Cpl
Ethnicity/Nationality: Caucasian/American

Physical Description:
Standing 5'9" with brown hair and green eyes, Eli is of average but sturdy build. With outdoor life in the semi-arid desert of the Texas Panhandle being the norm until the Nam, he is well tanned, and in good shape. Basic has hardened his frame.

Skillset:
Eli has a couple tours under his belt at least, giving him some familiarity with the VC, the jungle, and operation of his weapon systems. He as proven to be capable under fire, and has demonstrated leadership capabilities among his peers. As such he has recently been minted as a Corporal and given charge of a few others.
With a youth spent outdoors, a gun in hand, hunting, exploring, and being in dangerous country sometimes, has attributed to his survival in the jungles of Viet Nam.
M16 Expert
M203 Qualified
Land Navigation Qualified
Army hand to hand

History:
Elijah was born in Borger Texas in 1945. His father was Dale Dodgers, a WWII vet. His mother was Helen who was the daughter of a displaced farmer from the dust bowl. Dale spent most of his time working the oilfield and carbon black after returning home from military to provide for his wife and son. Eli attended public schooling in Borger. He gained a few friends, and even had a girlfriend, Regina Warren. For a time, Regina was all he was about, and intended to marry the girl until the Draft came along.

His dad taught him to shoot and Elijah took to hunting and fishing with his grandfather and father (When he had the time). During his school years, he was a typical kid of the day, when he wasn't parked next to the radio or TV, he would sometimes venture down to Electric City, the small township that had sprung up around the steam-based powerplant that had been erected to power the Phillips-Chevron Refinery as well as the oilfield drilling locations in the area when his dad was a boy. By the time he was old enough to go to Electric City, it had been all but abandoned. Exploring old houses and structures was a fun activity, and occasionally he found something nifty while he was there. More than once he'd found a rattlesnake there, but he'd learned how to handle them, and was always careful about such things.

Something of a loner because of this, as mentioned before he had only a few friends, maybe enough to count on one hand. But those that he had were good ones. Occasionally he would spend time with his cousins, of whom he had several, which between his friends and family allowed him to be decently well-rounded and instilled the value of family. He still maintains a sense of independence and self-reliance.

It was during the last year or so of high school he took an interest in Regina Warren, a dark-haired girl with blue eyes who'd grown up in the same town. At first she turned him down, but with charm and persistence she finally decided he was serious, or at least seriously interested in her. The two started seeing each other outside of school, a little at first, but then more so, even going out on dates.

By this time, Eli's mother had become a working woman at the local J.C. Penny's. Better that than the alternative, as inflation soared. Being well old enough to take care of himself, Eli was left to his own devices much of the time, especially with his father becoming increasingly absent from his life, spending more time at the local watering holes after work, and often stumbling home drunk. This meant it was much harder for his parental unit to wrangle in his 'extracurricular' activities. This gave him something of a badboy vibe, which Gina was drown to, and Eli probably didn't do much to dispel it.

Just before graduation, his father wound up running his car off the bridge of the Canadian River on Highway 136, after traveling down it the opposite way in a drunken stupor. The car dropped a couple stories below and crashed into the river. Unable to free himself, his father drowned, leaving his mother a widow. A month later the Draft came through, and pulled him away from his mom and Gina.

At first Eli resented the military and the draft pulling him away from his little life in Borger, sometimes it was the thought of home that kept him going, as well as the letters back and forth. Basic training kept him pretty busy, and was a distraction needed. After that he attended training at Fort Benning for training regarding the new 11th Air Assault Division. Serving with the 11th, he gained several tours, but wasn't entirely happy about the 11th being rolled over into 1st Cavalry Divsion (Air Mobile) but since then not a whole lot has changed

Equipment:
  • M79 grenade launcher - "Thumper" - 5 grenades, 3 smoke
  • M16A1 (w/ brass deflecter, newer model), "Rebecca" - 3 extra magazines (1 mag empty)
  • Colt 1911, 4 extra mags (one loaded in weapon)
  • M1942 machete, scout carry (small of back)
  • Gerber Mk II fighting knife
  • Jungle fatigues, boots, boonie hat, OD Bandana,
  • Canteen, e-tool, poncho, 50' 550 paracord, FAK, other soldier sunderies

Name: Daniel "Danny/Danno" Pope
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Rank: Sergeant
Ethnicity/Nationality: Caucasian-American

Physical Description:

Daniel stands 6'2" and weighs in at about 195 lbs. His time in the military has given him quite a hard and toned frame as a result, which can be seen here. As a result of the sun that constantly beats down on Vietnam, Daniel has tanned slightly despite his ethnicity's stereotype of not tanning very easily.

Skillset: Danny is capable of keeping a cool head in times of extreme stress, able to dictate orders rationally if needed to. He also has experience in recognizing NVA/VC strategies and being able to figure out a way to counter them if he needs to. He is trained as a rifleman.

History:
Daniel Pope was born in San Francisco, California on April 17th, 1939 to a nurse and a soon-to-be World War 2 veteran, who would be fighting against the Japanese during the Allied Powers' island-hopping stint. He had one older sister, and a younger brother that would come along within some time. After his dad came home from the war, he had a relatively normal upbringing, definitely filled with stories about his time in the war. As a result, Danny had been really particular towards the military. His dad was his hero growing up, and pretty much inspired his conscription into the military.

As soon as he graduated high school, he immediately enlisted into the Army, where he was sent to boot camp. His enlistment allowed him some time in between for him to get acquainted with the military setting, base life and whatnot. Being on a base was also where he would meet his wife, Marie Thompson in 1960. With her, he would have a daughter born in 1961. However, in 1963 he received a letter that pretty much told him he would be going to Vietnam. The timing of the letter was rather unfortunate, as he had a second daughter along the way, but he knew his duty as a soldier. He had served two tours previously before coming to the 1st Cavalry, bringing along his expertise and familiarity with the operation of the Vietcong and NVA.

Equipment:
  • M16A1 Assault Rifle
  • Colt M1911A1
  • M1942 Machete
  • Gerber MkII Combat Knife
  • Standard-Issue Army Fatigues, Boots, Load Bearer, and Helmet
  • Backpack with god knows what inside.
  • Picture of his wife and two daughters as a personal effect
  • Fingerless gloves just in case he sweat too much for him to hold his gun properly

Skillset: Hammond having been going to college to become a surgeon before enlisting voluntarily didn't have enough practical experience to get into one of the field hospitals below the front lines, it did however allow him to become a very good field medic. Not as calm as he'd like to be in a firefight, he shines when he is preforming his duties as a medic.

History: Hammond war born December 7th 1946, growing up was normal as it could be, barring the strict studies his father whom was a professor of History made sure he kept his grades as high as possible. His loving mother giving him much support he needed. While his father was not the nicest man, never showing much affection other than a nod and a pat on the back. His mother was Hammond's backbone. His supporter.

Progressing through his school years, Hammond excelled at every subject and upon graduating was sent to College to become what he always felt he wanted to be, a doctor. Hearing the constant news of the conflict in Vietnam, he grew restless. While he did not want to go to shoot or to serve his country rather help those that were wounded in the fight he kept to his studies hoping he'd graduate in time to do something about it.

Getting impatient, months before his 21st birthday he enlisted. Not telling his parents that he had dropped out of college until he wrote to them just after basic. Per finishing his training, he made sure to let them know he had medical training at least somewhat through his studies. But realized shortly after that he did not have enough time in a hospital to qualify for a spot behind the lines in a hospital. But took him instead as a field medic.

He has been in Vietnam for four months, gaining some credit to his skills as a Medic on the field while not used to the jungles he has a duty to try to save the lives of every man he can.

Name: James Fletcher
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Rank: Private
Ethnicity/Nationality: White

Physical Description: James is an Average 5'8, while skinny and not imposing in the slightest in his military outfit his jet black hair and dark green eyes could still be seen. His skin is pale, his family's british roots not helping with the fact he preferred the library to the fields. Clean shaven, and hair cut just the way uncle sam wants it.

Skillset: James while not the best shot; or strongest is a quite talented pilot being swooped up after basic testing high, he fit right in with the other flyers. He can keep relatively calm under fire when he is behind the controls of a Helicopter, But is out of his element on the ground.

History: James was born February 27th, 1948 in Raleigh, North Carolina. His father served in the 82nd Airborne division during the second world war and while he was a veteran he never talked about what had happened during his time serving. James grew up an ordinary life; though his father pressed him to keep up with studies, that academics were the most important thing to his future. His father never told James anything about the war, even when pressed and begged he would simply say that was then and this was now and ask him to drop the subject.

His first big milestone came at 10 when his father bought him a model plane, spurring in his son a fascination with flying airplanes and taking into the air. This love of flight kept with him spurring his urge to go into Aeronautics and the grow to want to be a pilot. He graduated high school with flying colors, top marks. And though his want to go to college was strong. His family could not afford the luxury nor the money to send him to flight school. Name: Harold "Hal" Cho
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Rank: Private First Class
Ethnicity/Nationality: Korean American

Physical Description:

Hal is a wiry guy with sharp, bright almond-shaped brown eyes, smooth, lightly olive toned skin, prominent cheekbones, and a small nose. He stands at 5'8", which while around average for his ethnicity, is likely shorter than most of the white and black soldiers in his unit. His wavy black hair is kept loosely combed within regs and sticks up in places, though his facial hair appears to be growing rather stubbly. Faded acne scars dot his cheeks. Hal speaks with a nondescript middle-class accent, his voice itself is surprisingly deep and has good enunciation. When he laughs, his whole face scrunches up with mirth. He looks much younger than his 19 years and smells faintly of cheap deodorant when he's not stinking of jungle rot.

Skillset:
Hal shot Marksman with the M14 in basic training, much to his own surprise. Thanks to his parents' insistence on speaking Korean at home, he has a working fluency in the language, should it ever become useful. He has no other relevant outstanding talents aside from the infantry combat skills pounded into his head at Fort Benning. He fills a rifleman role in his squad. By and large, he's a scared kid caught up in an ugly war. This is his first tour to Vietnam.

History:
Christened Harold but having taken a liking to "Hal," Harold Cho grew up in Koreatown Los Angeles, the youngest of two children. His parents, refugees of the Japanese annexation of Korea, came to America before the Great War, as children. They lost everything, but eventually scrabbled together a livelihood serving Korean-Mexican fusion food out of a roving trailer.

Hal's childhood wasn't all roses and merry-go-rounds, but it wasn't half bad, either. His clothes rarely fit, and his parents were on the road every day, but that only meant more freedom to explore the city with his friends. There was so much to see, so much to do. It was the 50s, and it was a great time to be a kid. Living near downtown Los Angeles, Hal mingled with people from all walks of life, from the up-and-coming to the homeless. Shades of every color could be found in his circle of friends, but not by design. That's just how it was. They found common ground in their love of comic books, cars, good food, and girls.

Hal's parents pushed him to excel in both school and life. "You can be more than us," his dad often snapped at him while drunk. As Hal grew older, he shouldered more responsibility. He only went out on Friday nights, he stopped smoking pot, did his homewok on time. He did his parents' taxes, he got his driver's license, he went steady with Ellie from history class. Milestones came and went. A gig delivering papers for the LA Times provided him with a steady income, most of which he gave to his parents for rent and bills. Hal was a busy guy, juggling to various degrees of success his studies, friends, job, and a budding relationship. He focused on living his here-and-now. Rumblings of an ongoing conflict in Southeast Asia were heard, but not registered.

The first letter in the mail, an order to report for armed forces physical examination, was concerning. And little by little, rumors got around. Vern from last year's class got drafted, did you hear? Will says he's gonna run away to Canada. Do you remember Ted? He got killed in Vietnam.

It was a Sunday morning, but already warm and bright. Three days ago, Hal had graduated from high school with honors. He was UCLA-bound to study... well, he wasn't sure what he wanted to study, but whatever he committed to, he was determined to do his parents proud. He woke up, not for church or anything; he wasn't very religious. Wondered what Ellie was up to. Walked out the front door yawning, barefoot, to the mailbox. And his heart dropped.

Once at the kitchen table, he opened the envelope.

The President of the United States,
To HAROLD CHO:
Greeting: You are hereby ordered for induction into the Armed Forces of the United States...

Hal turned 19 in US Army basic training.

Equipment:
  • All standard issue Army equipment. Dogtags, taped together. New utilities, still green and starchy. Jungle boots, still black and shiny, with extra laces. Web gear. Rucksack. Flak vest. Helmet with cloth cover. Hal probably keeps too much shit in the band, including a can opener, bottle of bug repellant, and field dressing. He's crudely drawn a smiley face on the front of it.
  • M16A1 service rifle. Hal's taken advice from the salts and kept its magazines loaded two rounds short.
  • Additional armament: M7 bayonet. Fragmentation grenades. Claymore mine. Extra belt of ammo for the M60.
  • Other miscellaneous gear. Flashlight, water purification tablets, blanket, matches, etc. Whatever else the platoon needs him to carry.
  • Green towel draped around neck.
  • Extra socks, extra canteen.
  • Several meals' worth of C ration pound cake and peaches. A bag full of C ration cigarette packs.
  • A sheaf of letters and photographs in envelopes. A leatherbound journal.

Name: James Smyth
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Rank: Second Leuitent (I am not new to the site but I will play it as a new guy.)
Ethnicity/Nationality: Caucasian/English

Physical Description:
6' 3" with 12 stone. Short brown hair with blue eyes. He has multiple thin cuts along his lower cheek. White pale skin. He look like he is just off the boat to fight. Unlike the rest of the platoon he has no muscle definition and mearly just skin and bones. Thin would be the best words to describe him. Has eyes that dart around looking for something. Put simply, your run of the mill toff.

Skillset: Can run a mile in a couple of minutes. He has basic training as per usual, has a degree in human biology and advaced mathamatics, shame they are rather useless. A real sharpshooter with a rifle, be that a M1, M14 or and M16. Over all lacks the skills that many other men in the platoon have gained.

History:
((I doubt il be able to make the big huge posts everyone else has, ill try though))
James Smyth was born 1944 in Oxfordshire to the parents of Charles Smyth - A professor at the local university and to Jayne Smyth - A BBC producer. He was christened at St Terisas.

James has a great childhood, granted it was dull at times due to the fact that he had to attend dinner party and rotary events, which is a real bore for a four year old. He did well during school, well as well as he could do.

When he was eighteen years old he started university, he was one of the lucky few who got to join Oxford. While there he studied human biology and advanced mathematics. By the time he had left he was vying for a fight, he enlisted in the officers corp and after finishing basic training went to america to fight.

Equipment:
- Colt Commander with 2 clips
- M14 Rifle with 5 clips
- Officers Uniform
- Picked up one of the dead soldiers helmets
- Bayonet Knife
