"Sounds like a good old time with the boys my gigantic brother." Thinking to himself about the conversation they were all having. The two of them seemed very into the workings of how this place went and it made Xander feel a bit lazy. Well naturally there is strange stuff afoot here. However, with the lab I got hemmed up for in the middle eat, what could they be doing out here. Experiments? Or is that to movie script for me to think?

Looking toward the two of them he whispered, "Sounds like we can kill two birds with one stone here? Seems like that old island may have some goodies locked inside to check out. Plus, I feel anywhere that isn't in this mansion would be more ideal for star gazing? Wouldn't you say my boy?" Throwing the joke out there in hopes of spurring up some ideas.

Sasha grunted. "I think I'm tired of reading my current book. I'll visit the library tomorrow. If we want to ever see the outside world again, we first need to know where we are." With that, he stood. Sasha fixed a wrinkle in his t-shirt as he headed towards the door. He wasn't known for socializing, and too much of it would raise suspicion. "I'll be in my room."

As he headed down the hall, his mind began to wander again. Sasha had far more important reasons to wish for freedom than just missing the good ol' days. It had all started with a mission in west Africa, and a woman named Althea.

He and his men were tasked with guarding a village from group of men from a rebel militia who would have otherwise taken it over. This village was a hotspot for missionaries, and someone out there with a lot of money had a heart big enough to want to keep it safe. It wasn't the first time Sasha's unit had done this sort of thing, and it probably wouldn't be the last. They had divided up into groups that would patrol the borders of the village around the clock. Sasha remembered the distinct feeling of tension in the air, like they were walking through a mine field blindfolded. The children who ran around the village would occasionally talk to them, telling them horrific things they had seen that hardly even phased them anymore. The whole ordeal left him feeling a little sick.

He knew their time there would be stressful, and the temptation to seek comfort among the village would be strong. Sasha had warned his men time and time again to not sleep with the locals. They all knew better than to force themselves on a woman; Sasha's unit was formed by the idea of morality in this dark profession. But it wasn't uncommon for women to approach them on their own accords, looking for men they knew had money and the means to support them. Not only that, but these types of settings were often a hotspot for disease. It was unfortunate, but true.

Sasha had never thought that he would be the one to break his own rule. But to be fair, Althea wasn't a local. She was a missionary from Nigeria. She was very educated and spoke clearer English than most of Sasha's men. To Sasha, she seemed like an angel in the midst of darkness. She had come to the village as a teacher to school the children. She treated them with patient and kindness, something they often lacked in these rough times. She made sure that the food that was available was divided evenly among her students and that they got at least one meal during the day. Sasha first spoke to her when one of her students ran off into the forest, and he was tasked with finding the boy. The boy, about 8 years old, had gotten upset over news of his sister dying and ran off to hide for a while. Sasha had found him before nightfall and brought him back to safety. Him and Althea ended up spending a few hours talking about the dire situation in the country.

That had snowballed into something else. Sasha didn't confide his troubles and personal issues in his men very often. He was close enough to a few, like Amid or Bernard, to vent to them when he needed, but he was a leader. He couldn't risk appearing weak in times like these. It wasn't long before Althea became his outlet to vent to. They would sit, watching the sun go down, and he would go on and on about all the fucked up shit in his life. She usually had some input too. Being a missionary, she had seen her fair share of evil in the world. But yet she had this light to her; like a beacon. Sasha didn't know if his admiration could be considered love or not; he still wasn't quite sure. But it all came down to one night during the late fall when one of their talks lead to something more.

It had only happened that one time, but that was all it took, he guessed. The guys had already packed up and moved on, their farewells said as they left the village in the hands of a new unit coming to take over. They were actually on a break in one of their safehouses when Sasha got a very alarming phone call. He had several burn phones, mostly used to communicate with employers, but one was reserved for an emergency line that his men could use to get in touch with him. He only gave the phone number to people that he could trust with his very life. He had given Althea that number; just in case. She called him a couple months after he had left Africa, letting him know that she was pregnant.

Sasha had no idea what to do. He had never had any kids; had never even considered it. He remembered holing up in one of the rooms in the house, talking to the woman who would soon be the mother of his child for hours about their plan. Althea was very clear on being a single mother. Sasha knew the social connotations that came with this, but she, understandably, didn't want a man like him hanging around her child for too long. It hurt to hear this, that she saw him as dangerous, but she was right. If anyone ever wanted to fuck him up, where would they go first? His family. To him, that had always meant a group of ragtag mercenaries who could very easily defend themselves, but now a child was added to that list.

Sasha told her that he would be okay with visiting, maybe once a month, but he wanted to be able to see his kid. He also didn't want that child anywhere near villages like the one he had been in, at least not until they were older. Althea agreed that she wouldn't go on any more trips until the child was old enough to be left with trusted family members. Then came the talk of child support. Obviously Sasha wasn't the kind of person someone thought of as being an A plus parent, but he did his best. They both came up with a budget, and Sasha was happy to wire money to Althea once a month to pay for hospital visits and childcare. He was sure to leave Amid with instructions for his finances in case Sasha ever died, so that Althea and his child would be taken care of. He imagined those instructions were being put into place right now.

All and all, it was worth the stress and worry the first time he visited. Althea gave birth to a healthy daughter, and Sasha was on the first flight to Nigeria he could catch to see her. Any regret he had was immediately gone when he saw the tiny bundle in Althea's arms. The baby girl was so small, a healthy seven pounds and two ounces. Althea already had a name: Kimmie. It was her grandmother's name. Sasha had stayed for two weeks, holing up in a local hotel and coming over to hold his daughter and try not to cry. Not many people knew what a big, weepy mess he could be, and nothing did it to him quicker than having to say goodbye to his daughter at the airport. Althea seemed to think of him as a friend more than the father of her child. She was very clear on not being interested in a romantic relationship, and Sasha was pretty okay with that. Whatever feelings he had towards her were kept locked away, knowing that his chances of ever having a normal family relationship were long gone. They probably never existed to begin with.

Kimmie would be three now, and she was just getting out of the babbling stage the last time he saw her. It had been over a year since he'd seen his daughter, and he wandered if she would even remember him if he ever got the chance to see her again. He really tried not to think about; this wasn't the kind of place to show weakness, after all. His worst fear would be the sick fucks that ran this prison finding out about the biggest chink in his armor.

Sasha sat down on the edge of his bed and picked up his book. He was too engrossed in his own thoughts to actually read it. All the talk of escape, actually collaborating with other people about it, made him think that maybe, just maybe, he would see freedom again. And with it, maybe his little girl, too. He set the book back down and sighed as he laid down on his cot.

Nancy left the conference room feeling a little light headed. It had been a long meeting with a lot of things discussed. The square eyed nurse had jabbered on about how Nancy's ideas to provide more recreational events was idiotic, a waste of resources, and who would run then anyway? The nurse who spent the afternoon lying around? Nancy was left angry and speechless. It seemed that there was sympathy on her part, though, and she hoped to talk to Dr. Greene about it privately as soon as she could. For now, though, she needed to get away from all of these people and just go spend some time unwinding. Tomorrow would be a rough day for her, she anticipated. She was not looking forward to it.

She missed certain aspects of her old life off of this island. She had a couple of people she considered friends, people she could hang out with and watch movies with in the evenings. She didn't feel like there was anyone she could invite to watch any movies with her that night. The patients she felt close to were not allowed into the housing wing for staff. She didn't think any of the nurses liked her that much to want to spend time with her- or maybe her confidence was just shot after being so publicly berated by that insufferable woman. She didn't know which it was.

As she was walking down the hallway, Dr. Brennan caught up with her. "I'm sorry about what happened in there. We'll be having a discussion with her about professional conduct." Nancy jumped. Dr. Brennan was so quiet, and she was not expecting anyone to be talking to her at this point.

"Oh. Right. Yeah. It's no big deal, I guess..." But Dr. Brennan had business in mind and didn't let Nancy finish.

"I updated the prescriptions this afternoon. They take effect in the morning. You're the prescription attendant during breakfast, aren't you? Please be sure to pay special attention to the changes, as there are several." Nancy nodded, thankfully she wasn't being asked to do anything else tonight.

"Yes, ma'am. Absolutely. I'll make sure to be particularly attentive in the morning. Thanks for letting me know."

"Wonderful. And please, take it easy tonight. I heard you weren't feeling well. If you need any kind of medical attention, please let me know. Chronic pain has been a major part of my studies and career. I'd be happy to help you, if I can." Dr. Brennan smiled one of her dazzling smiles.

Nancy smiled in return. It was a little humiliating that everyone knew when she was having a pain episode, but the offer to help her was so kind. She'd be willing to do almost anything to make the pain go away.

"Thank you."

"Of course. Make sure you come see me next time it flares up. I don't want to hear that you didn't."

"Yes, ma'am. Have a good night." Dr. Brennan walked off, confident that a nurse wouldn't be selected for any experiments- not until she was ready for them to be, anyway. Nancy went off in the other direction, feeling strange about the conversation she just had with Dr. Brennan. There was definitely something wrong with the offer to help her with her back pain, and it felt... gut wrenching, somehow. She definitely needed to watch something funny tonight. Maybe she'd watch The Blues Brothers. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, Carrie Fischer- there was never any chance that movie wasn't going to be a comedy. As she walked down the halls, she wondered- did she dare invite someone to watch it with her? Her eyes scanned the faces she passed, trying to find anyone who she might want to spend the evening with and get away with it.

"See you later!" Elizabeth waved to Casey, watching as her friend walked away in the other direction towards her room. Along the way, she thought about what Josh had told her, how he wasn't allowed to hand any of her belongings over to her. She didn't intend on getting the poor kid in trouble, but she had to come up with a way to get her hands on that necklace.

As she started brainstorming, she noticed Nancy walking towards her looking somewhat upset.

"Hey, is everything okay?" she asked.

For some reason, Elizabeth grew a bit worried about the nurse. She hoped her condition hadn't worsened, but who in the world could tell what this place did to someone, whether patient or employee.

So I guess old Sasha was right huh? This place did stink to high heaven. How could something like this get approved by higher ups without even a shred of evidence being released to the public? Lord knows the right "liberal" people would have destroyed this place long ago if they would have found out. I guess it is an inside job for us then, huh? as Xander's mind trailed off he noticed Elizabeth and Nancy together from afar.

"Not one, but two gorgeous woman chit chatting it up in the hall? What a lucky day for a "mentally unstable" man such as myself! Unless the drugs have finally taken hold and you two aren't actually here. Which is okay because that just means my mind has gotten really good at this whole 'imagination' thing." As he joking around his arms stretched upward with a yawn. It seemed a lot of the staff had met up for one of their 'pow wows'. Turning to Nancy, "Y'all get the coordination done for the homecoming dance or something?"

Nancy was about to answer Elizabeth before Xander spoke first. She smiled, then laughed, shaking off some of the worry that had built up over the meeting.

"There was a horrible fight over the color palette of the decorations. We really need to pick campus colors so we can settle thing stuff peacefully." She answered, perhaps a little too much of her contention for the square-eyed nurse coming into her voice. She didn't understand how someone she didn't even know the name of got to be such a pain in her neck. Nancy turned back to Elizabeth.

"I'm fine. There's always one person you butt heads with, you know? Just putting up with mine." Nancy tried to laugh it off, but the laugh came out as mirthless and half-hearted. The truth was, that was only half of the story. Dr. Brennan had put her off far more than she had realized at first. Nancy could not talk about the doctors that way, though, especially not to patients. If she was the only nurse patients seemed to trust, like Joshua said, she would have to be very careful what she said to them. Anything said in passing could end up coming back to bite her in the ass.

"But! My day is finally at an end, and I'm going back to my rooms to watch The Blues Brothers." Nancy wondered if there were cameras in the staff wing... there probably were. She was nervous to say anything, but these two she could actually see herself just wanting to spend time with.

What should she do? Invite them back and break very explicit rules? Grab a laptop and watch a movie in the rec room, where others would undoubtedly join and she would be in charge of while off of the clock? Invite herself into one of their rooms to watch it? She didn't want to be on anymore. She just wanted to relax and stop being a nurse for a couple of hours. She tried to go over what would be an acceptable route... and with her proposal for additional recreational activities, the second option would be the best. She hoped not many patients would wander in.

"If you like, I can grab my laptop and we can watch the movie in the rec room. It's got two of the best Saturday Night Live actors in it. You might even be able to learn something from them, Xander." She added playfully.

"Yeah, Xander, you ought to pay close attention," Elizabeth chimed in, giving him a playful nudge and a wink. "Obviously I'm in..." she continued, turning back to Nancy, "...as long as Dr. Greene can't find a reason to show up in the room and cut our little party short."

Elizabeth wasn't just trying to keep herself out of trouble, but she was looking out for Nancy as well. She knew the nurse was a good person, not allowing the likes of this place to influence her morals for the worse. If she could help just one person hold on to their humanity, then she would do everything in her power make it happen.

"Now all we need is a nice bottle of wine and this will be the best movie date I've had in years."

Xander gave a nice laugh at that accompanying it with a pat on Elizabeth's shoulder, "Well if you haven't hear around the campfire, old Nancy here is quite the swooner. I tell ya her 'wine and dine' game is above and beyond." Hearing Dr. Greene's name always made Xander shudder. The good Doc was the mad scientist of old black and white films, it would seem. Gives you all the wrong feelings at the right times when you think about him.

Giving a normal Xander grin he responded, "I am always good to learn a new thing or two in the comedy world. Help keep me up to date with all the people, ya know? So no one can say that I am getting "Bland" or "Annoying". Pff, what do they know right?"

"Well, I can't guarantee that Dr. Greene won't arrive, but I doubt he will. You two go to the recreation room and I'll be back with the movie and my laptop." She turned and started off down the hallway toward the staff wing. It felt like it took far too long to get there, but perhaps that was because she had had such a long day. When she finally reached her rooms, she wanted to lie down. Instead, she changed out of her scrubs and into lounge clothes- yoga pants and a baggy t-shirt from a concert she saw while in college. She didn't care if this was allowed or not. She was off duty, so she didn't need to be in the scrubs.

The staff rooms were minimal, but still far more than the patient rooms. Staff rooms included a small living area, a kitchenette, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Her kitchenette was filled with not-so-good-for-you foods (most meals were gotten from the main cafeteria), including microwave popcorn. Nancy popped a couple of bags, grabbed some water bottles, and a package of cookies. She would really need to go off the island to get supplies at some point. She hadn't left the island since she started, so she wasn't sure how this would work... but staff had to be able to go off the island sometimes. Right?

She started back, carrying her things in a bag. The smell of popcorn was strong to begin with, but she had popped it in her rooms so as not to attract to many other patients once she got back to the patient halls. She hoped it would work.

He watched as Nancy left then turned to Lizzy. "Well I better go slip into something more comfortable myself." Xander said as he made a quick turn around spinning on his heels to face back at Liz. "What do you think of my lounge wear? I think it shows a bit of 'I'm very relaxed yet approachable'." Leaving his arms outstretched as if showing off the wonder that was his asylum outfit.

In all honesty he couldn't have been more excited to get some relaxation with two other sane people in this asylum. It was a real treat that Nancy was going out on a limb being this relaxed around us. He felt as though he didn't want to put her in harms way as he believed Elizabeth felt. No decent person would shake the limb of someone going outstretched for a fruit. Even if the person that would shake the hardest was the person who owned the whole forest.

"Hm, I'm not quite sure how I feel about it," Elizabeth replied, faking a British accent and narrowing her eyes to appear as if she was analyzing Xander's attire, "I mean, you're wearing last year's trend so if people think you don't care about yourself, then they might believe you don't care about them at all."

She couldn't help but chuckle at her own comment, the realization that she had to go to such great lengths to find a little entertainment in the hospital made her shake her head.

"Recreation room it is, then. Now if only we could get our hands on some alcohol..."

Nancy made it to the recreation room with her popcorn, movie and laptop in tow, and somehow seemed to have escaped the notice of most of the other patients. She knocked on the room of Sasha as she passed, thinking it would be a nice way to thank him for him help earlier, but it looked like he was sleeping... she couldn't be sure. To be on the safe side she half whispered,

"Movie in the recreation room!", and then moved on. She was looking forward to spending some time with people, something she had really needed. She hadn't realized how much.

Once there, she saw Xander and Elizabeth waiting for her.

"Made it! And with some treats." She set the food down on the table and proceeded with getting her laptop set up.

"I hope it's ok, but I knocked on Sahsa's door to let him know. He helped me out earlier today and I felt like I should repay him. I'm not sure if he was asleep or not, though... so he may or may not show up." Nancy grabbed a handful of popcorn and plopped down in the center of the couch she had aimed the screen at.

"Ready, you two?" She asked with a smile, her fingering hovering over the 'Play' button.

Sasha lifted his head at the sound of someone knocking at his door. The plucky young nurse's voice came through from the other side. Sasha stared at the closed door in a bit of disbelief. A movie? Really? Those idiots were going to get busted so hard. He was pretty sure this sort of thing was frowned on here.

He dropped his head back down and stared at the ceiling for a few more minutes.

Then again, he didn't really have anything better to do, did he. Sasha sighed as he stood and strode towards his door. He had a feeling that he was going to regret this.

He walked down the hall to the recreation room and was met by the sight of a few other patients and Nancy nesting down to start a movie. He silently walked in and found a folding chair to pull up. He turned it around and sat in it backwards so that he could rest his arms and chin on the back.

Xander plopped down, arms falling behind the couch, "I was born ready you wild and crazy kids." This was the life I tell ya. Locked behind prison bars at all times, now sitting next to the few people in this asylum that kept him sane. Xander truly felt comfortable for the first time in a while. His brain was just focused on the movie, nothing could shake him right now. To get lost in a story was the way to go now a days.

He thought about the random songs he would sing to help him remember the good times. Sitting at the mess hall while deployed for one. Sometimes days would be so bland that the only thing you could talk about was the other person's meal. That was enough though. Just to keep it as fresh as you could. Learning random instruments with friends, sounding awful, but having a "jam" session of sorts. The little things is what made the person, as it were.

Not just that though, but the company you kept. What Xander brought to the table, or what he had hoped, was relief of sorts from the mundane. Relief from your mind at times. All he cared about was the insanity that was building up within most of us. Hell maybe even some of the staff started to get bitten by the fever. He tossed a couple of sweat treats in his mouth as he would gaze back at the door every now and again. He would be damned if someone would come in and ruin this much needed relaxation time for the group. He would be good and damned if someone did that.

Nancy smiled when she saw Sasha walk into the recreation room. He had been awake, after all. She waved, but didn't speak. He seemed to want to be silent and she wanted to respect that. When Xander settled onto the couch next to her, she hid a smile with a handful of popcorn.

A piece fell down her shirt... of course. She finished crunching the handful that hadn't tried to escape and reached in to retrieve the renegade kernel and tossed it onto the table. She hoped no one noticed.

The music was fantastic. She couldn't help but sing along when some of the songs started. When "Shake Your Tail Feathers" came on, she sang the whole song while doing a goofy dance akin to the dance being done on the cars in the movie. She wasn't loud, but she couldn't not sing to that song.

"Come on! You have to know the song!" She said to everyone when she saw them not singing to it.

Elizabeth was enjoying the movie. Not one she would think about seeing if it were up to her, but since Nancy had brought it down, she was glad she had been given a chance to watch it. No one else was saying much, and for a good reason. Elizabeth would grab a handful of popcorn every so often, glad to have a snack past dinnertime that didn't require sneaking it around past the guards. Just then, Nancy decided to start singing one of the songs from the movie. Elizabeth stared at her for a moment, softly bobbing her head to the catchy tune until she couldn't help but laugh.

"Alright, you got me!" She kicked off her shoes, then stood on the table opposite to where the laptop had been placed. Undoing her ponytail, Elizabeth started dancing as if she was in some carnival and not the break room of a secluded hospital. She didn't show any restraint aside from the making sure she didn't take a wrong step and fell off the table. The broken bones wouldn't be fun to explain to anyone currently not in the room.

Once the song was over, Elizabeth took a bow with a smile. She went back to her seat to put her shoes on again, a bit of relief flowing through her that no one had walked in at the wrong moment.

Slow clapping began from Xander as he smiled, "Such a performance, only I would enjoy attempting to out do you two!" he said with a laugh as he settled back into his chair, "My old muscles are sore though, and this thing with my voice, yea, it is super serious. Hard to explain, but hey if that thing with my voice didn't exist you all would surely be impressed."

As his bullshit left his mouth he looked back to see Sasha. The stories that man holds beneath that exterior would be fascinating. Military tied these people together and those that remained normally silent truly had a reason to be. He felt for the man as his mind wandered back to the screen. All Xander could hope for was that Sasha's mind would be given a brief break by the movie at hand. No need to be lost at sea all your life. Am I right?

Sasha was barely watching the movie, to be honest. He hadn't quite lived in America long enough to appreciate the cultural nods and references, and the plot seemed a bit odd. Then again, he had never really been much of a TV watcher growing up, either. His childhood home had been rather sparse. He lived in a lower class side of Kazan, and his father wasn't exactly parent of the year. They had only had one TV, and his father spent most of his time in front of it.

Occasionally, the dead eyed man that Sasha called a father would have his old pals over. They would drink, watch sports, and sometimes play poker. There wasn't much room in that mix for the lanky, timid child he had been. Sasha would spend most of his time in his room, reading books he'd stolen from the library. All he could thank his father for was keeping food in the refrigerator, mostly leftover take out, and keeping the heat on in the winter. Even then, sometimes dear ol' dad didn't come through.

Sasha wasn't even all that bitter about the general mess that was his childhood home. Not the days when he went to bed without eating, or the nights he shivered under an old, musty blanket. Hell, even the occasional drunken arguments that usually ended with him getting his ass beat didn't leave him quite so cold hearted towards his father as did the lack of concern over his cries for help. As a boy, Sasha had struggled to keep his grades up. A struggle he faced alone because his father was about as helpful as a sack of bricks. He was often bullied by other kids at his school, mostly because he wore old clothes that were usually ill fitted. The one instance that left the worst scar on his heart was when one of his father's friends come stumbling into his bedroom one night, drunk as hell and obviously bored with the game on TV. Sasha couldn't quite remember, but he thought he had been about seven or eight at the time. The man had crawled into his creaky old bed, which had seemed strange at the time because it was clearly too small for an adult. The things that followed had made the young boy very uncomfortable, and the slurred 'don't tell your dad' hadn't made it any better.

Sasha did eventually tell his father about a year later, only to have the incident brushed off because either his father genuinely didn't care, or he just didn't believe him.

That had, most likely, been what eventually prompted Sasha's rebellious teenager years. As a lanky, too-tall-for-his-own-body teen, Sasha had found comfort in drugs and alcohol. He never did anything real hard, but he could easily roll a joint by the age of fifteen, and he could proudly chug a whole glass of vodka without puking. In fact, by the time he had reached his late teens, he was a borderline alcoholic. He had given up on school, spent most of his time in the shadiest places he could find, and only came home about three times a week.

It would have seemed like he was on a fast and steady road to a young death. The only thing that saved him from the inevitable was joining the military. Sasha was still not quite sure why he did it, but the main reason he could think of was to get away from the hellhole he called a home. He had barely been eighteen when he realized his life was going nowhere. The first time he applied to join, he was denied due to his alcohol addiction. When he quite cold turkey, it had been absolute hell. The withdrawal had been a cold, hard wake up call to the young man, and after that, he was sure to never become reliant on any kind of drug again.

The next year, he was sober and able to join the army. His smart mouth got him in more than a little trouble. His nasty attitude eventually turned into something productive. The stubbornness that had once caused him to defy orders turned into determination. The brazen boldness that he used to challenge the meanest of drill sergeants turned into the guts it took to put other's lives before his. Once he learned to use the skills he had for his advantage, he began to succeed.

The military offered more than just a way out. It offered him the education he failed to receive. Sasha found out that he was, indeed, a very intelligent young man. All he needed was to be given half a chance. He also found out what a real family felt like. The men he worked with and served with day to day became closer to him than anyone he had ever known. He had enjoyed it, until his first deployment came.

After getting a real taste of what really happened across the border, Sasha found that he couldn't stomach it. He couldn't take orders that kept him up at night, guilt eating away at him. He figured he needed to be the one calling the shots, so that he could let his conscience decide what he would and wouldn't do. That was the whole reason he went into the private field. Three other men from his platoon had followed him, forming the bare bones of his old team.

Sasha had gone glassy eyed, no longer paying the movie any attention. He was drawn out of this by the sound of singing and upbeat music.
