I'm going to leave this here. It's super unfinished and subject to a lot of change. The only thing here is really 'Policy', but even that may change.

Actually, Polybius states that energy weapons are more the norm for the more advanced nations.

Does that contradict what I have?

It doesn't though it doesn't say what sort of tech they're using, so you should mention it at least once that they're using energy weapons.

@LucidnonsenseAs my main race are plasma based lifeforms which can enhance plasma-based systems, I'll use particle beams, directed plasma, fusion warheads, and maybe anti-matter warheads. My smallest ship will just have it's hydro-floric acid digestive substance, though.

Arent Laser weapons generally considered energy weapons? Plasma tends to be called an energy weapon too.

Laser could maybe qualify as an energy weapon, but plasma are just super-heated gasses so I don't think that plasma would work as an energy weapon per se.

Just my opinion here, but anti-matter would be very OP even in the smallest of quantities and it's VERY difficult to obtain it, so I would imagine only the richest factions could employ the use of it.

Is it OP? Antimatter has the drawback of containment, A nuke doesnt want to explode, damaging a nuke tends to disable it, not cause it to undergo a nuclear reaction. on the otherhand, you disable the containment on an Amat bomb and it can have destructive consequences. Compared to some other widespread sci-fi techs, creation of antimatter doesnt seem that inconcievable. Now, it is probably a bit more expensive than a nuke anyway.

The fact that's you can find large amounts of natural and usable anti-matter only near black holes and neutron stars which does make them hard to extract from said places. And not only that, the matter of actually containing them and placing them in a weapon or a bomb. These two combined would make it very expensive. And since a single microdrop(microscopic drop) of antimatter(can't remember where I saw it) can power the entire energy needs of New York City for an entire day. Imagine a large quantity of anti-matter shoved in a bomb and you got an OP weapon.

Technically most weapons are energy weapons, they deliver energy to a target in order to cause damage. The means the energy is transferred might be bullets or lasers

But that's only technically, not in practice. I think energy here are probably lasers or something of the sort.

What else would you define as an energy weapon

I don't think there exists a term for what I view energy to be other than that light blue superheated mass of... well, energy. I think we should just stick to lasers for now, or until Polybius explains it to us.

Why does it matter so much what plasma is called? It's all semantics and not at all important to the narrative.

Consistency I suppose, so that it is fairly clear what the advantages and disadvantages in combat are

That doesn't matter, though, since battles will be decided by the participants. If I decide it benefits the narrative for you to beat me, it doesn't matter what kind of weapons you have. What matters is that somehow you'll defeat me and it'll further the story somehow.

Exactly. As I gather, what sort of weaponry is employed is essentially a cosmetic factor. The only specification on the matter I see among the guidelines is that energy weapons are more expensive to produce, and presumably more destructive, than, I suppose, kinetic ones. As such, debating the merits of energy, plasma or whatever other weapons would amount to arguing over whether it is better to fire green or blue beams, which does not strike me as a particularly insidious point of contention.

@Claw2k1143 kilotons of explosive force per gram you annihilate with an equal ammount of matter, or 180 terra joules of energy. It could be harvested from stars (our own sun produces tonnes per year, it is just instantly annihilated.) but it would be difficult to get In large quantities.

Also, we manufacture positrons on earth present day, but can't store enough to do much more that cat scans and minor experiments with it. With plasma based life forms that live in stars, though, in might be possible to harvest and store it quickly enough for some minor uses, like a few hundred ships having a few dozen missiles.

@Oraculumin most sci fi, blue weapons are the good guys, green neutral, and red bad. That's true in star trek and star wars.
