Largely, Nathaniel’s history has gained him a lot of respect. If the Coalition were headed by any other member, most people agree that the group would be looked upon even less favorably. Once a star athlete in high school, Nathaniel immediately enlisted in the US Military after graduation, despite offers from top colleges. He was focused on what he could to make the world a better place, and felt the military was the best option for this. He returned home at age 24, after being quietly awarded the Navy Cross, the US Military’s second highest award, for extreme heroism in the face of impossible danger.

Despite the accolade that the Navy Cross is, Nathaniel’s time in the Marines is largely classified. Particularly of note, is the mystery of what he did to obtain the Cross, and why he was almost immediately honorably discharged afterward. While his team was pinned down under fire from all angles, the young man’s power manifested, and he used them to save the surviving members of his squadron.

After this, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and sent home. The specifics of what happened were never shared by Nathan nor the men he worked with, and the military has no idea how they survived, only that they did and the entire team credited it toward Nathan, who requested the discharge. Due to the classified nature of the mission he was participating in, most of his adventures are kept under wraps.

Due to his football player history, and his time in the military, Nathan is looked on fondly by most of the older people in the city. Children love him for his personality, and… he’s a living super hero.

It helps that he’s good looking, too.

The Sentinel has shown comprehensive control over all forms of magnetism and utilizes this control to manipulate ferrous metals and achieve a variety of effects:

• Magnetic force-fields: Able to protect himself with an electromagnetic force-field that he can expand to large areas; the larger the area the more strain it puts on him. He is able to use these force fields to trap enemies and levitate objects in the air.
• Magnetic armor: the fibers in his uniform, engineered by team member Austin Daley, are metallic in nature. As a result, he can reinforce them with magnetic fields, making his clothing more like armor and near bulletproof.
• Magnetic flight: Nathaniel is capable of sustaining flight for very long distances and at varying speeds, by interlacing with magnetic field lines in his immediate surroundings.
• Magnetic rays: The ability to shoot powerful rays and electromagnetic pulses. These can destroy both magnetic and non-magnetic objects, and is his main attack against other humans — other than just dropping large metal objects on them, or flinging bullets at them.
• Metal/matter manipulation: Nathaniel can manipulate metal at near the atomic level, making it take different forms. He is capable of indirectly some non-metallic objects via metal ores they may contain. This causes a great strain on him, and he tends to stick with magnetism.

There is no questioning that he is a powerful Enhanced; easily in the upper echelons, his main weakness is quite frankly himself. His powers cause great strain to him, and has led him to work hard to maintain physical form; and if his body is weakened, so too are his powers. Additionally, moving larger objects pushes him to his limits, and he often immediately collapses after pushing his limits. Through training, he aspires every day to improve and grow stronger. The weaker his body is, the less he is able to access certain portions of his powers; it becomes more and more of a strain to, for example, manipulate and maintain his force-fields, and if he collapses from exhaustion, so to do the fields he was maintaining.

C O M B A T
While his close quarters combat skills are nothing to sneeze at, due to his years of service in the military, where Nathaniel really shines is when the elements are with him. When metal is within his ever-growing range, his power ceiling disappears, and his ability to fight increases tenfold. He prefers not to use lethal force, or even damaging force, and instead has a method of pinning enemies down so they can’t escape, tying them away with metal knots made from pipes.

Cal has always been the heart and soul of his surroundings. When he was a child he found a way to laugh with the simplest of toys, a way to turn the smallest of events into the grandest of stories. He was imaginative and superbly friendly, a child who's personality shone through and made his parents and their friends ooze with delight about the little comedian in the family.

In high school, Cal found his niche with the artists of the school, writing for the school paper and submitting his own creative musings to the papers artist's corner. He was always rather popular around school, known as the class clown, as well as the kid to go to when you were feeling down. He was a friend to all, an enemy to none, and he liked it that way.

The the upper middle class suburbanite community that his family belonged to was charmed by Cal. The McDaniel's little writer was a charmer, that much was for certain. Adults thought he was a responsible young man, with good morals and a bright future, and the youth of the community thought of him as a fun loving adventurer, and the best babysitter around. Cal was always in high demand around the neighborhood, something his parents always praised him for.

After joining the Coalition and being thrust into the spotlight, Cal's high energy and confident attitude brought him plenty of admirers, and he became a well known public figure. He seems to appeal most to the youth of the city, which makes a good deal of sense, seeing as how he is the youngest member of the team. However, there are a few older citizens who see Cal as reckless, and view him as a child who's stumbled in way over his head, rather than a powerful hero who's more than earned his spot at the table.

Cal finds that his powers are best suited to close up or mid range combat. While he has a few ranged abilities, his most hard hitting abilities are the ones that he can only execute when he's getting up close and personal. There's the added bonus of Cal getting much more of a thrill from being up in the thick of it.



C O M B A T
In combat, Cal is graceful and agile, moving around constantly, rarely giving his opponent a chance to get a hit in. Where as in his normal life he can be unfocused and erratic, in combat his adversaries have the unfortunate gift of his undivided attention. He becomes almost a different person when he's fighting, rarely letting up until the fight is won. While his thin frame would indicate a physical weakness, Cal hit's just as hard as the rest of his team, maybe even harder at times, when he knows he's being underestimated.

Cal is taller than your average guy, standing at about 6'0 ft, with a slim frame, the build of a runner. Shaggy, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes give him a conventionally attractive look, though he'll never believe you if you comment on his appearance. His mouth seems to always be upturned in an ever present smirk, one that makes him look much younger than his nineteen years.

When out on a mission, Cal is fitted in a black, reinforced bodysuit, one that won't necessarily stop a bullet in it's tracks, but it'll sure as shit slow it down, with the added bonus of keeping Cal light on his feet. Combat boots are a staple, as are a black mask that covers his eyes, nose, and cheeks, wrapping around to protect some of the jaw.

In his everyday life, Cal dresses more or less like one of those artsy fartsy kids that hang out at museums and talk about the deep meaning behind John Green. Large rounded glasses and anorak jackets, baseball hats with strange slogans on them like "Heck" or "Film's Not Dead", black, ratty, high top Converse, and jeans that are rolled up at the cuff. Hipstery, would be the unscientific term, which is suiting since there isn't much about Cal that is scientific.

Before the awakening of his Enhanced abilities, Austin was the type of guy that you would pass by in the streets without even noticing. His physical appearance was average at best, and he lacked any semblance of social skills or natural charisma. The only saving grace that he had was his keen intellect.

Growing up in a poverty-stricken area of Detroit, young Austin fought the status quo by diving into books and studies rather than gaining ‘street smarts’ like his troubled peers. After scoring a few points shy of a perfect score on the SAT - the wording on that question was ambiguous - Austin had his ticket out of the slums. With a score that high, he could have went anywhere, even the Ivy League’s made him offers.

Despite what most would consider the alluring temptation to leave Detroit behind and never look back, Austin stayed local. He accepted a full ride scholarship at the University of Michigan, where he has spent the better part of the past 9 years earning a bachelor’s, a master’s, and finally a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering.

Austin was 22 years old when his powers overcame him for the first time. As it turns out, even super geniuses get stressed out about their graduate-level research failures, and stress is the number one trigger for Enhanced emergence. After taking almost a year off and traveling to remote areas of the world to practice and study his newfound abilities, Austin returned to continue his education.

Eventually, Austin confided in his best friend, Serenity Lavi, and he was surprised to learn that she too was… unique. They found others like them in time, including Ren’s now-fiance, Nathaniel. Together, under Nate’s leadership, the Coalition was born.

On the surface, Austin doesn’t seem like the ideal candidate for a super hero. He isn’t overly confident, nor strong, nor dashingly handsome. The public, however, has found a certain level of charm and relatability in his awkwardness and dorky ‘boy-next-door’ looks. Inner-city kids look up to him as a role model of how you can overcome bullying and the struggles of poverty by focusing, working hard, and staying true to yourself. Doc is mostly known as the brain of the group, his doctoral research on laser technology was deemed useful for the Coalition and, as such, was funded by the government these past few years.

Between his studies, fighting crime, saving the city, and endlessly researching and tinkering with new tech in the Watchtower’s state of the art lab, most people assume that the man never sleeps. That much is true, he doesn’t really, there is far too much to be learned and done, especially now.

Doctor Faze has mastered control over phase changes. He is able to use his powers to change any substance, including himself, into any other state of matter. The four states of matter under his domain are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Shifting between these states, fazing as Austin has dorkily coined it, often involves an intense burst or loss of heat in the surrounding area, depending on the direction of change. Fusion, vaporization, sublimation, and ionization all use heat. Freezing, condensing, deposition, and deionization all produce heat. The magnitude of the environmental temperature change directly correlates to the amount of matter undergoing the phase change.

• Air Solidification: The ability to manipulate pressure in the air enough to solidify it. The level of air solidity can be anywhere from loose jelly to metallic hardness, depending on how much energy is put into it. This application of Doc’s abilities serves as a good source of shielding and barrier against attacks for the Coalition.
• Constructs Creation: The ability to form solid weapons, tools, and many other objects from surrounding liquid or gas. These constructs are lifeless, but able to function as well as a naturally made version of the construct would. Sometimes technology fails you, it’s advantageous to be able to improvise mid-fight.
• Intangibility: The ability to pass through solid objects. Doc can temporarily shift a solid barrier to liquid or gaseous state in order to move his solid form through it. This is especially useful for getting into locked/secure locations, or as a quick escape from a dangerous situation.
• Non-corporeal Form: The ability to transform into a bodiless being. In his gaseous state, Doctor Faze is nearly untouchable, and invulnerable to most physical attacks. Energy based assaults, especially spark or flame, is incredibly effective against this form. It turns out that a concentrated cloud of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen gas is highly combustible, who knew?
• Partial Invisibility: The ability to render oneself almost unseen. In gaseous form, Doc is practically invisible to the naked eye. If a person is supernaturally perceptive, very familiar with his powers, or in a harshly lit environment, Austin may appear as a slight blurry patch in the air, but nothing more. In most situations, this ability functions as well as genuine invisibility.
• Flight: The ability to fly, that’s pretty self explanatory. When in gaseous form, Doctor Faze can essential fly. Gaseous human is less dense than liquid or solid human, and most gases float freely. Doc often mimics teleportation by subliming, flying in his mostly invisible gaseous state, and then depositing in a new location. Gaseous flight is much faster than traveling in solid form.
• Plasma State: The ability to shift one’s body into plasma - fully ionized gas of low density. As positive ions and electrons move in this state, electrical currents and magnetic fields are generated. Doc’s plasma state was the hardest to unleash and control, and it is the most offensive ability in his power kit. Depending on the material he passes through in plasma state, electrical damage can be dealt, fires can be started, and metal can bend. Any ability that can be done in gaseous form can also be done in plasma form.

In addition to his Enhanced abilities, Doctor Faze also incorporates his hand-crafted technology into combat. Secured to each of his wrists are two high power lasers of his own design - the pride and joy of his graduate research. The extremely concentrated beam of light that they produce is so hot that it sears through flesh and bone, and can melt most metals. While these lasers and his plasma state are potentially lethal offenses, Doc hardly ever uses them. Austin is not a naturally combative person and, conveniently enough, his primarily defensive abilities reflect that. Because of his docile and altruistic nature, Doc functions mainly as a party support. Solidified air shields protect both himself and allies from projectile attacks. Construct creation is a handy skill when the squad finds themselves in a sticky situation. Gaseous form packs with it a whole torrent of non-lethal utility in combat.

For a man whose dorkiness knows no bounds, Doctor Faze often calls out his phase changes mid-battle, as if he is an anime protagonist using his ultimate move. Who said fighting crime had to be boring? When your life suddenly becomes a real world comic book, you might as well own it! As for morality, Doctor Faze fully believes that it is not necessary to kill, or even physically harm the bad guys sometimes, you just need to stop them. If violence can be avoided, he'd much prefer that route. That being said, if one of his allies’ lives were put in danger, he would not hesitate to activate his lasers and snuff out the threat… at least, he likes to think he would be heroic enough to do that.

In his everyday life - the one that doesn’t involve super suits - Austin looks appropriately dweeby for a scientist that gets little to no rest at all. Somewhat unkempt, his jawline is perpetually shadowed with stubble, and his chin-length hair only sees a proper barber’s chair once every few years. Unkempt is not to say unclean, as Austin showers daily, he isn’t that kind of nerd, at least he hasn’t been since middle school. Strikingly handsome blue eyes are made less-so by the commonly sported dark circles beneath them, at least his teeth are straight and white! His clothing style borders the line between ‘geeky professional’ and ‘my-mom-still-dresses-me’, which really aren’t all that different, to be honest. That is to say, Austin is normally spotted wearing a button-down or polo shirt and khaki pants, or nerdy screen tees and jeans if he is feeling particularly lazy. When working in the lab, a classic white lab coat tops these garments most of the time.

Amelia Marshall: Mother. Age 50. A hardworking waitress and mother of three who was dealt a far more terrible hand in life than anyone deserves. The widow remarried at age 35 after falling pregnant with her youngest.
Richard Marshall: Step-father. Age 53. A chef and manager at the restaurant that Amelia worked at for over a decade. He treats Amelia well and has a good relationship with all of her children.
Jeremy Daley: Brother. Age 30. A recovering drug addict and living proof of how growing up in poverty can negatively impact you forever. His relationship with Austin has always been strained, but may improve now that he is turning his life around with a baby on the way.
Callie Marshall: Half-sister. Age 15. A rebellious young artist with a taste for loud music and bad boyfriends. She means the world to Austin and he prays that her ‘free spirit’ doesn’t result in her having a bun in the oven before graduation.

Serenity Lavi: Best Friend. Age 26. Ren and Austin met he was only seven years old. She looked so frightened and confused by the world around her that he couldn’t help but try to make her feel better. As classmates and residents of the same neighborhood, they grew up together and grew even closer as the years went on.
Benjamin ‘Benny’ McGregor: Close Friend. Age 28. Austin met Benny in undergrad. They shared similar hobbies, namely favorite video games and a major in engineering. Even though life has taken them in different directions, they try to keep in contact by playing online games at least once a month.

Samaira was always something of a troubled person even before her dramatic change, but before everything and especially before that video, her troubles were at least written off as stress related. It was always because of her family, or so she would claim whenever she had the boon of patient-doctor confidentiality, but at some point being picked up from police stations with a busted lip and the faint trace of alcohol on the breath people start to wonder if it's a cry for help. Not that really anyone could help since Samaira was staunchly opposed to such a thing. Her problems were her own, or that of her parents and their strict views and upbringings. Samaira couldn't do this. Samaira had to do that. It was, as always, the rebellious youth refusing to grow up. Samaira didn't see the appeal in traditions, and the hammer swung hard in the other direction. And with it came her reputation.

In terms she was once told by her father after one of Samaira's first incidents, she was already coming to the game with a loaded deck. Not everyone was keen on the Varma family even with their contributions to the community. Old prejudices and older habits meant Samaira had to be better than what people expected. Of course, not everyone was against the Varma's, but to Samaira it always felt like she was being held under an impossibly large microscope. Her family wanted her to act one way, society another, and not once did it seem like she could do anything other than play along. She was that, for a time, the quiet but unassuming girl, out of sight, out of mind. That wasn't her.

Samaira started small enough, taking things that didn't belong to her from stores. Candy. Soda. Snacks. The harmless stuff. Petty theft was still theft, however, and after getting caught the first time she realized a sad truth. It was the only time her parents seemed to care about her. Not her reputation and by extension theirs, but her actual well being. So of course that was just enough justification for Samaira to keep doing it. To keep getting taken in, intentionally violating curfews and making herself out to be a negative source. Samaira craved what she didn't have: familial attention and bonding and, yes, even love.

Her reputation leveled out as she reached her twenties. The should've been valedictorian of her high school went on to not go to college. Her time spent in the back of police cars and underage drinking caught up with her in her early twenties and finding employment to support her was difficult, if nothing else. Her parents didn't want to support someone that threw away her life so what could she do? As Samaira became an adult, she started feeling more and more isolated and shunned. By her parents. By her lack of true friends. By her lack of love.

She wasn't quite sure when it happened, but after the change she felt even more shunned, isolated, and feared. People already didn't like her because of her youth of getting into thefts and trouble, and now she was even more different, and not just because of her ancestry and skin color. At least when she had a skin color it was easy to point to that as a reason for being shunned...now she no longer had that.

It was fortunate, then, that the Coalition entered her life. Even though among them she still felt like an outcast...at least it gave her something positive for a change. People do stupid things in their youth, Samaira especially, and the change had to have been karma coming to bite at her; and the Coalition her way of earning trust back in the eyes of those above and around.

And yet, Samaira sometimes feels just the same as she did as a child. Unsure. Alone. And very, very afraid.

Spectra's Power, in the easiest term of the word, is Light and Color Manipulation. In more complicated terms she can refract and reflect and focus the variety of colors in the spectrum of light. Ever since her powers came to light (pun intended) along with the Change that turned her from Samaira into Spectra, her body itself has become almost ethereal, as if she was a living being made of light itself. As such her body gives off color and effectively makes her like a mood ring, though her more active abilities are not tied to emotions as her body is. With the abilities she has she can control the direction of her light emissions, their frequency (or color), and intensity. Though not physically the strongest in terms of ability, Spectra has discovered quite a few uses for her unique brand of ability. Uses such as (but not limited to):

Photon Blasts: The staple ability if ever there was one, Spectra uses her light and color to produce what are effectively energy beams. They can be any color but no one color is stronger than the other, it's mostly for effect. The photon blasts are like hard light constructs in a way, in that though it might seem like shooting a beam of light, it's actually a physical thing and not just some minor annoyance. Spectra can technically emit photon waves from anywhere on her body but she uses her hands as that gives her more accurate control. She can fire a sustained beam but it exhausts her, and should she use her body to become a bright beam of blinding photon energy, the strain could well be fatal.

Holographic Projection: By shifting light particles, Spectra can effectively create holograms of herself in order to distract. Theoretically she could project OTHERS but she hasn't exactly tried this in the field.

Flashbang: Using her lights in ways other than her primary attacking method, Spectra can, of course, blind someone temporarily (or permanently if she lost control or was particularly malicious) with light and color. Imagine shining a flashlight directly into your eyes. Now imagine it was even brighter than that.

Flight: More of a hover, really. It's amazing what the manipulation of light energy can do to a body.

Hard Light Body: Spectra's body might not have, well...human qualities anymore but it does have certain advantages. Namely that she can't be blinded herself by light and she's a lot lighter in terms of weight and mass. That said because of the nature of her ability, she does need at least a light source to be at all effective making her greatest weakness...well...the darkness. And her body, which is almost glass in appearance, is pretty fragile which makes her a light glass cannon of sorts.

C O M B A T
Spectra is not a close quarters fighter by any means. She is, however, useful in setting up diversions and traps with her holographs and blinding flashes. When things do get to the action phase, and they always do, she's better used as a ranged fighter, offering support with her photon blasts. She can throw a punch but given the nature of her body she prefers not to do a lot of physical attacks of that sort. She's trying to master the art of light warping - that is being able to warp to any light source - but her powers seem geared differently.

Before there was Spectra there was Samaira and Samaira had long, raven black hair and frequent dark eye makeup to give her a smokey sort of look about her. Samaira was above average in height, about five eight or so, and had a healthy, albeit slightly thick, figure. Of course, that Samaira no longer exists. Now she is Spectra and her body is, well, different. Her hair is more like those color changing strands on fake Christmas wreaths and her body is like glass, except people can't see their reflection in her. Spectra no longer possesses a normal body, instead being a being that, while certainly humanoid in shape, seems to be more ethereal in appearance. Gone is the epidermis, replaced instead by a sort of...crystalline shape. Where once there was skin there is now a translucent form, a form that takes in and changes color like a fiber optic holiday tree. The features present on a human exist. Spectra has fingers and toes, a physical 'body' that is just...crystalline. Her eyes change along with the color of her body, but there are no pupils or irises. Just glowing sockets serving as eyes. For the sake of those around her, Spectra wears clothing, though she prefers to wear items such as robes...things that she can drape over herself.

Ever since Ethan took on the mantle of "Taurus", he's pretty much been the least marketable member of the team. He's grumpy, and the trigger for his power makes him effective, but very very dangerous. The "Coalition Critics" have constantly used Ethan as a prime example of their arguments. Honestly, Ethan wouldn't blame them either. Getting angry is what he does, and to reach the strength he needs for a job, he needs to get angrier. The power and the rage feeds each other, and it makes Ethan scary to the public. It's more fact than opinion that Tarus is dangerous on the field, however it has been documented of him stopping rubble falling on civilians or using his strength for protection rather than full on offence.

To the team, some of them know that Ethan does mean well but it's hard for him to shake the feeling that not only everyone is scared of him, they hate him. It's what makes him a bit of a grump around the base, and often is the voice of cynicism of the group. He provides a truthful yet bleak outlook and opinion to those who might seek it, although they probably have no reason too. The man of honesty to others and to himself. He's often seen working out and training more often than not. Although, what else can Ethan provide apart from his pure strength and determination?

SUPER STRENGTH, HEALING FACTOR

Ever heard of the Hulk? Yeah. That. Except Ethan doesn't go huge and green when he gets angry. That's the short version of it.

Ethan's power is the ability of Super-Strength. He has some degree of this all the time, but it really shines when he gets angry. Taurus's strength stems from how angry he is. The more rage he builds up, the more strength he gains. It's a rather vicious cycle that Ethan has to keep in check 24/7. The actual limit on this is unknown, but one fact is. Ethan is susceptible to losing control and this allows the beast inside come out to play, which was only seen once before the mysterious stranger that killed the Mayor showed up. This event also lead to Ethan temporarily losing control. Ethan can usually bring himself back, but sometimes it will take the other members of the Coalition to bring him back, maybe even by force. This is known as his "Blood Rage." Ethan's veins visibly bulge when he uses his strength, and are very pronounced in his rage. At the same time, the veins have a red glow to them, but the glow is at it's brightest in Ethan's eyes, which would be entirely engulfed in a crimson glow when he's in his Blood Rage. His body also enlarges a little bit, making him bigger and bulkier in rage too.

His cells are also remarkably strong and somehow are way faster at working than a normal human. They visibly stitch back wounds together and knit broken bones back to shape. Although sometimes long term injuries aren't as instant as a small cut or something similar to that. Sometimes he has to focus the healing to react to multiple wounds at once or a heavier wound, meaning he can't really do much in the meantime. Also it isn't known whether or not the healing factor could go as far as growing back a limb, for example.

Skills & Techniques-

• Rubble Toss- Ethan will tear off a piece of building or concrete to throw at a target from great distances.
• Seismic Stomp- Ethan creates a shockwave with a mighty stomp that can throw enemies around him up into the air.
• Incredible Jump- While Ethan can't fly, the dude has got mad hops. Winding up his legs, Ethan can leap great distances and land with a considerable impact.

C O M B A T
Ethan enjoys fighting, probably a lot more than most of the Coalition. After all, it's what he's good at. He has no qualms in showing off his strength, often charging or marching straight towards the enemies head on. His punches are slow and heavy, a massive slugger in terms of his hand-to-hand style. Force over finesse for sure. However, he does have a responsibility he wants to uphold, something Nathan drills into Ethan constantly. Don't let yourself stoop down to their level, or how are you better? While he tries not to use lethal force, it's obvious that Ethan wouldn't shy away if that has to become an option, but only if he's sure he can let loose without hurting innocents.

Ethan stands at an impressive 6' 4" and weighs 265 lbs. His superhero costume was especially made by Austin to expand seamlessly to Ethan's size, and is incredibly durable. A sleek grey and black sleeveless suit made out of a tough nanofiber material that uses carbon bonding to keep it knit together. The suit has the insignia of a bull proudly displayed on the chest, something Ethan is quite happy about.

Out of hours, Ethan usually wears very simple things that are comfortable. Workout clothes include sweatpants and vests, and his "business-casual" is simply a t-shirt and jeans. Formal wear is never usually on the agenda but if you have to you might be able to get him to wear a shirt and tie, although it would be like giving a cat a bath. Outside, he usually wears a hoodie to hide his face. Although being recognised is nice, for Ethan it's a whole different ballgame. If he's recognised, people usually cross the street or try and confront him if they're one of those assholes.

Ethan grew up in an orphanage, having had both his parents die when he was just a baby. Ethan was adopted into a home with no semblance of care or love for a child. A 'father' who was drunk off his ass more often than not and a 'mother' who preferred to whore herself out for drugs behind her husband's back than raising a child. It made him wonder why they even adopted in the first place. The father seemed to resent Ethan more often than not. His attitude at school and penchant for getting into fights meant that he was no favourite among the students or the teachers either. The only people he's ever truly cared about is the Team and the people they've been charged to protect, even if some of them don't care back.
