"Come on, Gramps! Isn't there anything to do around here?" A boy asks his grandfather, with whom he's staying while his parents are out of town. "Just how old-school can you get? You don't have a TV, no computer, nothing! What do you even do all day?"

"Now now, quiet down sonny, you've made it very clear you don't enjoy model trains last time you were here, and you know I can't take care of a pokémon anymore. Like I've told you back then, if you're bored you should read a book! ...Sheesh, I'm lucky I've already retired. How can you make a living as an author when the only thing youths care about nowadays is their silly computers?" The grandfather sighs.

"You were an author, gramps? You wrote books? But I've never once seen a book with your name on it!" The boy looked somewhat confused at the sudden revelation, but his grandfather simply smiles at the conclusion. While it was true that his books hadn't been best-sellers, back in the day it had earned him enough money to make a living... Times were different, back then, but perhaps he could preserve just a little bit of those times through his grandson. Smiling faintly, the grandfather reaches into a cabinet at the back of the room and retrieves a dull-looking book with a monotonous, tan cover. On the front it reads; "Arotura: An immoral tale," in curly black letters.

"Curious aren't we? Alright then, I'll read it to you."

Chapter 1
Unlikely Encounter

This story begins on a cold evening like any other. A young woman in clothes far too light for the weather warms her hand by a bonfire, waiting for a large piece of meat to finish roasting. Beside her sits her only companion; a Scyther, impatiently gnawing at another chunk of meat, this one raw. The woods were honestly the last place she'd have chosen to spend the night, but dusk had already fallen and night would soon follow, leaving her with little other choice. As she waited for the meat, she quieted her breathing and focused on the forest's ambient sounds.

She could hear the crackling of the fire, the soft noises of her pokémon eating, the rustling of leaves and even the sound of flowing water in the distance. It was a peaceful kind of quiet, and though she preferred this silence over the racket and the pressure of her old life, being alone like this every night was taking its toll on her. How long had it been since she'd fled Yaewong? Since she last went to sleep covered in bruises? Years now, and in that time she'd done things she wasn't proud of... Life moved on though, ready or not.

"We should go to town again tomorrow, Kaijin, our stockpile is completely empty..."

The girl's voice pierced the silence like a knife, despite how she kept her voice down. The Scyther, in response, merely shot her a bored look before it continued eating, eliciting an exhausted groan from the girl. Her Scyther being a pain do deal with was nothing new sadly, but at the very least it pulled through when she needed it. With a slight pout, the girl stood up, walked around the sloppily made spit gently moved it away from the fire, then carefully plucked at the meat where she hoped wasn't too warm.

The sensation of heat burning on her fingertips formed a sharp contrast to the cold, piercing winds blowing through the forest. She almost burned her tongue as she quickly blew on the strip of meat and put it in her mouth, but when she did she discovered all over again how just how nice warm food could be. Her pout was quickly replaced with the slight traces of a smile as she continued to pull strips of meat from the roast. Tonight she had good food, a bonfire to warm herself by and she even had some water left. The only thing missing was company, but even without any this night was better than average already.

Adrian And Carrie

A cold night made colder by his companion wasn't anything new to Adrian. Being on the run for around 3 months now left him always looking behind him, however since leaving Yaewong he has found life quieted down. Not quiet enough to bore a man, as survival is always a luming game, yet quiet enough to understand what happened. He knew he did the right thing, saving lies and ready to expose the dirtiness of Leno Koi, yet he felt as if he could have done something else. Maybe he could have kept his mouth shut, if he did he might have been able to become a general himself. Yet right now this wasn't one of those times to think about this. He was hungry and cold, Carrie has been looking around for him and has came back with some great news, there is someone nearby, they were getting close to the fire they saw a few minutes ago. Hopefully they are friendly Adrian is too tired to want to fight, if he had to he would kill them, but he doesn't really want blood on his hands right now. He just wants to get out of the cold.

As Adrian came close to smelling the fire, he knew he was close enough for them to hear him, he called out, "Hello, I don't mean any harm I'm here to just see who made that fire and ask if I can warm up". As Adrian steps out into the open for them to see him, he has his armor on and some basic clothing under it. He still looked like an intimidating force nonetheless with his size and stature, as he look towards them he quickly finds a woman sitting there with a large piece of meat, and light clothing for this weather, and a Syther chewing at some meat. His hands are open to view and he even raises his left hand and places it on the tree next to him so they can see his hand is away from his blade.

Carrie is hiding around 5 yards away, looking at Adrian's back making sure nothing sneaks up on him. She is also there as she doesn't really want to meet anyone as she is afraid they will try and hurt her as she is a Haunter. She does however creeps closer every once in a while because she can smell the meat and is getting more anxious wanting to eat something.

Dante & Crackers

“Its freaking cold outside” Dante exclaims as he rubbed his hands together. “I can’t believe We let someone steal our blanket” as he looks at Crackers to his left. Crackers looks a little disappointed in himself as he was on watch as Dante was getting some food in the market. “Nothing we can now though right? Might as well eat and keep walking, we’ll find someplace warm.” Dante grabs himself some jerky and crackers and shares them with Crackers.

The sun has fully set, Dante and Crackers are now basically walking in the dark with only the moonlight to guide them. “Well I don’t know if we are going to find some warmth tonig-” at that moment Crackers starts heading into the woods after seeing the fire. “Well nevermind, good job Crackers.” Dante pulls ahead and tells Crackers to hold up for a minute as he takes a look ahead. He sees a Scyther and a girl sitting by the fire and a man at the treeline. Dante thinks Well they seem like they both seem like they can kick my butt if they tried. With that Dante steps out of the treeline and somewhat loudly asks to make sure they can both hear him clearly ”Excuse me, but do you have room at that fire for two more?” At that time Shelgon has also broken the treeline and has wobbled up to Dante staring intensely at that meat.

Jirai
-&-
Saidon

An upheld hand. A small, ambiguous gesture - but all that was needed for the Druddigon to slow its gait to a halt. The hooded figure that made the gesture lowered her hand to the quiver at her side, before slowly drawing an arrow from the half-dozen or so left over. The hand brought the arrow up to notching position, resting above the grip as the hunter maneuvered ever so slowly to acquire a better angle.

Short, rough grunts almost couldn't be heard from ahead, accompanied by ever-so-soft rustling. The arrow settled more rigidly into place as the hunter gripped its shaft and raised the weapon, rapidly but smoothly increasing the tension of the string as it was pulled back. If one were to look at the scene they could swear it were a moving art piece, as neither the hunter nor the bow made so much as a squeak.

But all was interrupted by a sound some distance away, further into the woodland.

The hunter's head swiftly turned towards the sound at the same time the waiting Druddigon emitted a soft grunt of warning - which earned a fit of rustling in response from ahead. Sure enough, a lone Sawsbuck bounded deeper into the foliage, its antlers bobbing up and down as it fled. The hunter still held the bow tightly drawn as she scanned the vegetation and the woods beyond it for movement.

She lowered the bow as she rose from her squat and reconvened with the Druddigon. They looked at each other as if to communicate without actually speaking. Normally, Jirai would not even consider such a risk to be worth the thought. The call was obviously human - or something trying to sound like one. But something in her gut, perhaps, influenced her. She nodded to the winged creature beside her and patted his shoulder with a leather-clad palm before turning back into the woods.

There couldn't be too much of a risk, right? At worst, some bandits could spot her and she could just sprint away. Couldn't hurt to check it out..
---

Another call as she drew closer, this time easily recognizable as a voice. Potentially a different one from the first.

A conversation carries some distance in the silence of the woods - seemingly even further at night.

The hunter once again took a stalking stance, staying low and on the balls of her feet as she carefully prodded the treeline with her presence. She could see the outlines of three figures - two likely human and one more spherical in stature - at the edge of what was seemingly a clearing of some sort, if not a small one. And then a fourth, accompanied by a fifth, in the clearing itself.

It seemed at least the one figure with the roundish Pokemon was unknown to the others, based on their inquiry.

This could get ugly, quickly.

Jirai decided to simply watch those present, as from her concealment in the woods it would be quite difficult for anyone to acquire the knowledge of her presence. And if they somehow did, well...she still had her bow in hand.

Haruhana Aoi & Kaijin

"Hahhh?" A long, drawn out, almost whiny exclamation came from the girl, ignoring the growling of her Scyther. There was of course the saying "be careful what you wish for," but for it to be quite so effective was astonishing. Adrian wasn't exactly the company she'd envisioned either, even more so given that he seemed to be without a pokémon partner, which could only mean that it was hiding somewhere nearby. No one in their right mind would go into the woods at night alone, and this point was quickly reinforced when Dante showed up with Crackers, leaving Aoi not with one, but with two squatters. Letting out an irritated groan, she rose to her feet and pointed a thumb over her shoulder to her Scyther.

"You try anything funny and Kaijin here won't hesitate to kill." Sure enough, Kaijin snarled in what was probably agreement... Really, with the hostility it was showing so blatantly, it wasn't hard to imagine the Scyther attacking even if they didn't try anything. Seeming sort of displeased regardless, the girl turned her attention back to the steaming hot roast and concluded; "Still, I don't own this forest, so I can't really kick you out, in which case you might as well fill up some of this empty space... For starters, why don't you give me your names? I'm Haruhana Aoi, although I doubt you'll have heard of me."

It was hard to tell if that really was approval, but while she still seemed a little bit on-edge, at the very least Aoi wasn't hostile... Well, not very hostile. As she resumed picking at the roast, Aoi's glance kept switching between Adrian and Dante, waiting to see who'd speak up first, yet seemingly unaware of Jirai lurking in the shadows. On the other hand, she was very aware of Crackers' pleading eyes focused on the meat. She certainly wouldn't recommend trying to take Scyther's food though, and she wasn't sure she wanted to share her own roast either... Depending on how well Dante had tamed his Shelgon, things could get ugly fast.

Adrian And Carrie

Adrian stiffened up slightly as he saw another come out and made their presence known. Adrian immediately calmed himself as he realized he had nothing to worry about this person. He seemed less than harmful and his Shelgon looks to be just a small adorable ball as it seemed to be harmless by its nature but he can't let his gaurd down with those ideas as they are out here and that could mean they would have something to do or running from so they can't be all harmless. The Scyther looks like it wants to fight, Adrian didn't want one, he knew if he had to he would have a good chance however since Carrie had great time when dealing with bug types and could always rely on the fact she has the advantage in the wood in a fight. But this isn't about combat this is about just trying to catch his breath so he didn't want to give off the wrong idea.

As Haruhana seemed to gave her name his hair on the back of his neck raised, he heard that name before when he was in towns heading out of Yaewong, one of a girl who killed her adoptive father before vanishing. Adrian knew this was a bad idea, but he did want to rest, so he took the opportunity with a, "Well I think I will take up this space", as he sat down near the fire and sighed out as he continued, "My name is Adrian Corwin and this is...", as he gestured to his left and looked as he realized Carrie wasn't with him. He snapped his finger twice and said, "Carrie they aren't gonna hurt you so you can come out".

When he says this a moment passes until a Haunter slowly pokes its head from behind a tree as it looks to be a smallish Haunter with a scared face and eyes. She starts to stare at everyone and hide behind Adrian poking out every once in a while to look at everyone again. Adrith continues as he says, "This is Carrie and she is quite shy as you can see". Adrian puts his hand on Carrie as he begins to pet her, it seems to work as she slowly calms down as he looks towards the other man and sees who he is and what his name is.

Dante & Crackers

Having now seen Adrian take a seat next to Haruhana and her Scyhther, Dante feels a little bit more comfortable with joining. As he is about to start walking over he sees Adrian call over to someone called Carrie. Dante decides it would be best to wait to see who Carrie was. As Carrie appeared to be a Haunter, Dante let his guard down again and walked began to walk over. The Scyther looked pissed as hell so I need to make sure I don’t aggravate it. I would like my to remain the way it is by morning so I honestly shouldn’t piss off anyone here. Crackers is walking behind me in a waddle. I end up taking a seat and making sure Crackers is further away from scyther then I am.

“My name is Dante and this is my friend Crackers. We were leaving one of the towns nearby and it was getting late when Crackers saw your fire. So we thought we would head over and hope that we would have somewhere warm to sleep.” Crackers intense gaze upon the meat slowly falters into sleepy eyes as the warmth of the fire puts him to sleep. Dante pets Crackers for a bit until he knows he is fully asleep.“ Crackers had always been an energetic guy ever since he came out of his egg so nice everyonce awhile to seem just sleep. So as thanks for lending me your fire, I have some food left from that town”, Dante pulls out some bread, crackers, and a little bit of mustard, “Take some if you like”

Haruhana Aoi & Kaijin

"Keep it. I've got my own food and I honestly don't trust either of you."

Despite her cold words toward Dante's offer, Aoi watched curiously as Adrian beckoned his pokémon closer. It looked odd, to say at the least, but Dante's pokémon didn't look any less strange to her. Quite frankly, she'd never seen any pokémon quite like Carrie or Crackers before, but they did seem like they would be a lot easier to handle than Kaijin. Perhaps it was the absence of any sharp blades on their limbs, or perhaps it was simply because Carrie and Crackers actually seemed to be pretty docile. Either way, it made Aoi a little jealous, seeing Adrian and Dante be able to get along with their pokémon like that.

"So there's pokémon like that too..." Aoi muttered, mostly to herself. She plucked another bit of meat from her roast and stuffed it into her mouth, only to realize a moment later that she hadn't actually introduced her own pokémon yet, unless she were to count her earlier warning. Taking her time finishing the piece of roast she'd put into her mouth, Aoi eventually swallowed and got around to introducing her pokémon.

"Kaijin here is very fond of his personal space. He can be a bit mean, but so long as you just leave him be, he shouldn't bother you." Theoretically, anyway. If Kaijin for whatever reason decided he didn't like your face in particular, there would be little Aoi could do to stop him. Probably best not to mention that though, given that she'd rather not put her two "visitors" on edge when she couldn't very well go somewhere anymore, at this time. With that realization came a question though; why had Adrian and Dante been out in the wilds so late?

"...By the way, how come you guys are all the way out here at a time like this? Are you headed somewhere?"

Xavier and Blue

The night was silent, not a sound was made save the gentle shuffling of feet on grass as Xavi- CRRROOOOONNCH

... And just like that the silence was broken. Xavier looked back at Blue, the Kirlia grinning innocently through a mouthful of the berry she had just bitten into... Apparantly it was very crunchy. Xavier sighed and rolled his eyes as he continued walking, the Kirlia speeding up to a slight jog to keep up, although with Blue it looked more like a prance or skip. These were the moments Blue enjoyed, the silence, nobody around but her and her Xavier. Xavier however, was preoccupied with something else entirely, a fact that Blue was very aware of, hence her trying to distract him. It had been several days, or really nearly two weeks since their last group fell apart. As it turns out, raiding the nest of a Charizard is not the best idea. Xavier and Blue escaped rather easily thanks to Blue insisting on them running. Now they were alone, with next to no money and with dwindling supplies.

Xavier flinched slightly as an emotion rose to the surface that did not entirely belong to him. Worry, a sense of helplessness, genuine curiosity, a startling change from his current melancholy. He could not help but smile, a mixture of the Kirlia's effect on him, and the sheer thought of Blue worrying for him. "Do not worry Blue, it is a passing feeling I assure you. We will find our way, as we always have." More prodding at his mind, images and memories from Blue's point of view. Xavier kneeling in front of yet another stranger, Xavier driven to his knees by a pokemon, by a human, by those he had otherwise trusted. "I... you know me Blue, I... I can't..." An image, a request, Blue clinging even tighter to his leg. "Blue... I will try, for you." Blue hopped in response, joy at the simple admission that Xavier would try, and for them no less.

Xavier grinned as he looked down at Blue, now actively skipping circles around him, a little pirouette with each bite of the berry she still held. Xavier admittedly had no idea how he might fulfill Blue's request. 'Be your own master...' He thought of those words, a translation of the mishmash of ideas, images and memories blue often projected onto him, something he had admittedly become quite good at deciphering. He let the thought linger a moment longer as he looked up to a light in the distance, a campfire of sorts if he were to guess. "Eyes up Blue, people, or perhaps a pokemon setting things ablaze." Blue nodded, half listening as Xavier began straightening his clothing, rolling his shoulders as he tightened the strap that held his blade to his back.

Adrian And Carrie

Dante huh? Strange name defiantly not one Adrian would have heard regularly, well the same is for Adrian as well. His mother was from Venirirn and he got his name from her and his father did not mind, strangely. But that doesn't matter, Dante and Crackers, look innocuous to say the least, yet Adrian didn't trust that idea no one finds themselves out in the woods at night with just their Pokemon, looking as if running on nothing but fumes of food. Everyone here is probably running from something Haruhana is running from the village where she murdered her adoptive father, Adrian is running from being executed for treason, now the question is what is Dante running from.

Those thoughts can wait though as Haruhana asked them a question of why they here. Adrian has never liked to lie, but right now it is important to as he doesn't know how either would react to his answer. He can't trust either enough to really stay here with that information in their head as they could take the reason the wrong way, so he decided to give the place he wants to travel to, "I myself, am traveling to Adasto. I wish to visit the city my mother was born in".

There wasn't much body to that answer but it would be good enough to give a reason why he is here. It would explain his area and based on how close they are to the city it would be relatively easy to escape with this answer. Especially his name allows him to sneak away with it almost without any real concern.

Dante & Crackers

"Thank you for informing me that Kaijin is a fan of personal space. I'll make sure Crackers knows to not try and make friends with Kaijin. Crackers can sometimes be a little bit overeager to make friends." Dante is still petting Cracker making sure he stays asleep. "We just came from the city that way", Dante points in the general direction he came from, "I had just finished up an odd job before we left and I decided with the more cash in hand I should get some stuff before we head of to the next city." Dante takes a sigh, "Well it was suppose to be that but during the very first bit someone robbed us off our more expensive supplies. I was too excited to finally get some meat and some snacks that I didn't pay attention to the part of town we were in. Honestly I also thought no one would dare be so bold to steal from a dragon type Pokemon. But they were and Crackers here was distracted by some kids playing with a ball so what can you do?. I guess now the question is where after you heading?"

Dante realized he needs to be on the honest side here with the people he is presence of. Dante doesn't fight face to face to often and when he does he usually has a few tricks planned. He can't really start poisoning his blade in front of them now can he. He also feels like they aren't looking to kill him so there's no harm.

Crackers is dreaming of flying through the sky with Dante on him. They're eating meat as they soar. Crackers is slashing the clouds in 2. It's a wonderful dream.

Haruhana Aoi & Kaijin

"You're kidding me? A big guy like you getting robbed? ...You should probably be a bit more careful, then. Not to be a pain about it, but your 'dragon' isn't very intimidating, especially not with a name like Crackers."

Not to be a pain about it, she'd said, but the shit-eating grin on her face as she put another strip of meat into her mouth was a clear indicator that Dante's earlier misfortune was nothing if not amusing, to her. Still, maybe she ought to give him a little advice on shoo-ing off the wrong kinds of people? Kaijin was a great repellent for just about anything that moved. Its name wasn't exactly encouraging either, and likely for those exact reasons she rarely had any troubles like getting robbed, herself. When she'd swallowed the meat, Aoi's expression turned serious and she looked Dante in the eyes.

"Security is sort of lax around the border towns, so you ought to be wary of thieves at all times. The guards are too busy staring across the river to properly enforce the law, it's like a cruel joke. Intimidation's probably your best bet to avoid getting robbed, no one wants to mess with a pokémon called 'Shredder,' 'Monster' or 'Predator."

Quite frankly, the same was true for Aoi; her Scyther was vicious and the name she'd given him was partially to remind herself of that fact. Luckily, Kaijin seemed to have dozed off by now, allowing her to continue giving her 'sagely' advice. "And you, Adrian was it? I'm not sure what you hope to find there, but isn't Adasto where Venirin's king rules? You picked a fine time to go there, with the war going on and whatnot... Then again, I suppose simply wandering around like I do isn't any better as a plan."

Xavier and Blue

Xavier had been correct with his first guess, and lucky that the second was not true. Xavier stood silently at the edge of the clearing, the light barely enough to reach him, though more than enough to illuminate his rather bright color scheme of whites and greys. He was not hiding so much as he was simply not approaching, the disconcertingly empty, calculating gaze that all too often made children cry being the only emotion adorning his face. Blue however, had a very different approach upon seeing all the other people and pokemon. There was only one way in her mind at least to show who the boss was around here, and for some reason it involved skipping aggressively into the clearing and immediately tripping over a fallen branch and planting herself face-first into the dirt, then again that might not have been the plan.

Xavier sighed as his expression softened, taking a few steps in the direction of the now silently bawling Kirlia. As self assured as the pokemon was, she was also extremely proud and fairly vain, and was easily upset by her little shows of dominance failing, events that happened all too often. "Come now Blue, you are no baby, you brought that upon yourself... enough with the crying." The kirlia responded with a sniffle and a huff, scooping up the berry seed pit she had dropped during her fall and throwing it at the branch she tripped over, as if to accuse it of something before sliding up to hide behind Xavier and mend her wounded pride, brushing dirt out of her fur. "I apologize for bothering you, I had originally planned to move past your group, but the little display you witnessed has reminded me that Blue needs her rest, as do I." He spoke to nobody in particular as he scanned the contents of the clearing, taking note of the pokemon with little more than a glance.

Adrian listened to Dante's story and chuckled slightly as he didn't realize how out of it Dante was from Adrian's idea of a person who would normally be caught out in the wilderness with nothing: not a sell sword, not a convict, not even wandering bandit. All Dante gives off is a small air of a vagabond and a fool who finds himself in the company of other and it seems like a nice breath of fresh air. Yet this air vanished as Haruhana seemed to give some 'advice' to Dante on how to keep those sorts of people away.

Yet as she continued it came to Adrian as she seemed to have brought up a decent point that it was this lands King's palace and it would be a less than ideal place to go, especially in wartime, but what else would he do? Travel more and have live just viewing the world like that. He couldn't go back to a his land, word would have gotten around, and if he was found Adrian would just be executed. He sighed out as he took the idea and internalized it as he would need to figure out what he would do later as a strange sound came from Adrian's right.

He looked over to find a small (blue?) Kirlia lifting itself out of the dirt and running behind a large man. He had bright hair and a strange attire of grey and white. Seeming almost as a ghost just walked over and began talking to them. Adrian listened to him speak and waved his hand as he said, "You're fine I don't mind it, but I can't speak for these two". As Adrian gestures towards the other two he is sitting with.

Carrie begins to slowly float behind Adrian as a new person and his Pokemon appeared and she doesn't wish to really be seen by them.
