Hero Complex is an idea that I had to bring back an older RP in a slightly different way. The Alliance [..or was it the Allies?!] was an old RP of mine from before Guildfall that started out as an original universe spin on a government sanctioned Avengers type of team. It gradually morphed into its own thing and I'm hoping to find that spark one more time. This RP concept will also take cues from the Invincible series and maybe a pinch or two from the Watchmen depending on how you look at it, you'll see what I mean if you're still reading...

___________________________________________________

In the 90's the premiere superheroes were the Alliance. Sanctioned and funded by the United Nations the team was comprised of a humanoid cat-man from England named Leopold, a giant of a man called Megaplex, the armored Lady Liberty, as well as others. The times though... they're always changing. The Alliance had fallen apart in recent years. Constantly rotating new heroes in and out of the group, scandal with foreign organizations, and corruption when it came to the oversight from the UN eventually lead to the dissolution of the group. And then Lady Liberty was found dead due to mysterious circumstances while in her civilian identity.

After grieving for several days over his mother's passing, the Son of Liberty vowed to solve her murder. After finding a new prototype Torch weapon his mother had been developing, he reached out to several heroes affiliated with the Alliance but never got any kind of word back. He'd have to make a new Alliance. And it would have to be locally since he didn't have the same resources as his mother. Her death occurred in Liberty City, so the investigation would start there regardless of what the team turned into. Becoming a hometown hero was definitely not on Liberty Son's bingo card this summer.

Liberty City is a city of adventure and intrigue on the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina. It's design is reminiscent of a compacted NYC, however instead of five boroughs it only has four. It is home to several superhuman individuals and is formerly the home of the super-team the Amazings, as well as the recently deceased Lady Liberty.

* Liberty City is taken from the GTA series and has been slightly altered here and there for this RP.

* Rather than a Liberty statue with a coffee in her hand, the statue will resemble the male Colossus of Rhodes.

* Like Marvel's NYC, Liberty City will have several superheroes and villains operating there regularly that often interact with each other.

* The Amazings were an off-shoot of the Fantastic Four. They operated in the city from 2009 - 2022. Mister Amazing, Amazing Jane, Judy Juggernaut, Firecracker, and Kid Cosmo made up the team.

_________________________________________________________________

The general idea is to build a universe similar to how Invincible is mostly inspired by DC, we're just gonna loosely base this universe on Marvel. The RP will include heroic crossovers, fights between heroes, and team-ups leading into the eventual founding of a super team (the New Alliance) within the game. Now, that isn't saying you HAVE to join the super team. Originally in the comics the Hulk only joined the Avengers long enough to take down Loki. When looking at the building blocks of a more connected universe I look to movies and story lines like James Gunn's Superman, Civil War, the Avengers, Justice League War [the animated retelling of the new52 JL origin], Hulk vs. the Thing, Underworld Unleashed, etc. There are a lot of teams and concepts involved, but not everyone's characters will be team players or want to be. And I get that. There will always be the option to have a 'Wildcard' which is exactly what it sounds like. Can be anything and not even based on an existing archetype. Maybe you wanna create something of an amalgam of Hawkman and the Punisher and toss into the game as a vigilante w/superpowers? That can still happen.

Available Archetypes and Examples:

Advanced Techno [Ironman, Black Panther, Green Goblin]
Demi-God/Goddess [Thor, Storm, Sentry, Wonder Man]
Size Manipulator [Ant-Man, Giant Man, Wasp]
Vigilante [Punisher, Daredevil, Cloak & Dagger]
Brute [Hulk, She Hulk, Luke Cage]
Teen Hero [Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Speedball]
Cosmic Hero [Nova, Quasar, Darkhawk, Starlord]
Alien 1[Groot, Lilandra, Starfox]
Wildcard 1[Namor, Ghost Rider, Dr. Strange, Wolverine]

And yes there's also villain spots available:

Evil Genius [Justin Hammer, Norman Osborn, Dr. Octopus]
Brute Villain [Red Hulk, Abomination, Terrax]
Alien 2 [Psycho Man, Ronan the Accuser, Ultimus]
Wildcard 2 [Ultron, Nightmare, Whirlwind, Sandman]

REMEMBER!!! Characters don't have to be note for note knock-offs of existing characters. My Liberty Son is about as different from Capt. America as he can be. If enough people are interested, maybe four or five players as heroes and maybe a villain, I'll go ahead and post the CS requirements. We'd legit have enough to get this thing off the ground with just five or six people. We could keep recruiting open in case somebody comes along later with a character that fits as well. Or we can just get a full cast from jump street, whatever works. Hope to see some familiar faces! Where's everybody been hiding?!

Here's the CS template. Throughout the game we'll create supporting characters and such for our characters and the universe as a group, however players may also have the option of a secondary character down the line. Sandbox heroes and villains will also be made as we need them and can be used by anyone and everyone (I'll eventually get to write-ups for Leopold and Megaplex from the original Alliance). For now, let's just work on your Primary Characters....

Archetype:
Name:
Alias:
Age:
Powers/Skills:
Weaknesses:
Equipment:
Personality: [5 words best describing your character]
Appearance: [pic or description]
BRIEF Bio: [couple paragraphs MAX]
Storylines: [What do you have in mind for your character?]
Notes: [anything else you need to tell us?]

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

For the time being, yeah. If the roster fills up I've already got another handful to add into the mix including a 2nd spot for a vigilante, 2nd spot for an alien, as well as an additional wildcard and teen hero. I did it this way so we didn't have any two or three characters too similar. One RP years ago we somehow managed to have a total of three archers and like five vigilantes.

A squad of archer and a pack of lone wolves does sound pretty funny tbh, but I get how that'd result in a lot of stepping on each other's toes if the peeps weren't carful. Also with the whole joke situation of 5 loners all sitting in different dark corners of the room waiting to be approached

Most of them were part of a black ops type of squad within the group, we tried to make the best of it. I think the RP had like fourteen or fifteen players so eventually after dropouts the team leveled off. I saw it like how most of the Outsiders are also part of the expanded Justice League roster. IIRC one was a ninja, one was a Greek god, and I can't place the last one. Big rosters though are my jam.

_________________________________________

Archetype: Super Soldier/Patriotic
Name: Son of Liberty aka Liberty Son
Alias: Judah Marlowe
Age: 23
Powers/Skills: Two years US Army; basic training; proficient in hand to hand
Weaknesses: standard human weaknesses

Equipment:

The upgraded Torch uses electromagnetic fields to grant a protective shield and enhanced strength to whoever holds the weapon. While it's not enough to fly, SoL can also leap a great distance. Its mostly used as a mace type of weapon for close quarters, but it also acts as a solar powered light source.

Personality: Honest, Calm, Calculating, Blunt, Optimist

Appearance: [see current avatar]

BRIEF Bio:

His mom was a hero in the 90's leading up to his birth just after the new millennium hit. After he was born she was Lady Liberty for quite a few years longer. He knew his mother was a superhero around his 14th or 15th birthday, but it was kinda just something they didn't talk about. She was a successful entrepreneur and owned an apartment complex in Bayside on the far side of Broker (inspired by Brooklyn). Judah was mostly raised by his uncle Sam when his mother wasn't around. His dad was nobody his mother deemed important enough to find. A retired vet, Judah's uncle Sam (who also lived in the complex) inspired him to join the US Army for a couple of years after high school.

Judah had been going to community college on the other side of the 'Bay when his mother was found dead. After finding her latest invention (she was a bit of a tinkerer, as she had an engineering degree), Judah decided to be a hero himself and solve the crime that nobody else in the superhero world seemed to care about. With his military training, his uncle for guidance, and the weapon of his mother Judah was ready to accept his role as the Son of Liberty.

Storylines:

Sinister Foes - SoL will run through a gauntlet of street level baddies while teaming up with Liberty City heroes in the process.

A New Alliance - SoL is gonna be trying to make this a reality one hero at a time.

Who Killed Lady Liberty - Who benefited from her death? Why are the active members of the old Alliance remaining silent?

Notes: He's basically a more street level Capt. America type of character with a touch of DC's Stargirl. It always killed me Cap had street level powers but was a global hero because of his status in the military and the Avengers.

Archetype: Teen Hero
Name: Elijah “Eli” Reyes
Alias: Spellbound
Age: 17
Powers/Skills:

  • Spellcasting: Eli casts magic by speaking his intent aloud. His spells are small scale but powerful… when he’s focused. When his emotions spiral, the magic often misfires or backfires. He must believe what he says, or it fizzles. The spell’s effect depends on the emotional clarity behind it. When he’s calm, his magic works. When he’s panicking, things get messy.
  • Lightning: Lightning was the first magic he ever cast. He can produce short, bursts of electricity to stun or knock back enemies, but it’s hard to aim or regulate.
  • Levitation: He hasn’t quite gotten the hang of flying yet. He can float or hover. Has no fine control yet. Sometimes crashes.
  • Mystic Empathy: Eli can feel intense emotions radiating from people around him. In high-stress moments, he may channel those emotions magically without meaning to.
  • Beginner Spellwork & Ritual Knowledge: Taught by his abuela, Eli knows basic protective magic, spiritual cleansing rituals, and cultural spellwork rooted in Afro-Caribbean tradition.

Weaknesses:
  • Emotional Instability: Strong feelings = unstable casting. Spells fizzle or overload if he’s not centered.
  • Vocal Dependency: If he can’t speak, he can’t cast.
  • Inexperience: He’s smart, but new to the whole magic thing. Easily outmaneuvered in combat or magical mind games.
  • Magical Fatigue: Overuse leads to headaches, dizziness, nosebleeds—or full-on magical burnout.

Equipment:
  • Aubela’s enchanted pendant: Contains protective energy and helps him channel spells.
  • His grimoire: Its a composition notebook where he writes spell notes lol (And doodles, lots of doodles.)

Personality: Earnest, Awkward, Empathetic, Brave, Insecure

Appearance: A 17 year old Afro-Latino teen with warm brown skin, coiled black hair in a soft fade, and expressive dark brown eyes. He’s often seen with a nervous smile, hands fidgeting with his pendant. His costume is a modern navy-blue cloak-hoodie hybrid adorned with glowing runes, paired with jeans, and high-top sneakers. He wears glasses. He always looks like he’s about to say “sorry” or give you a hug.

BRIEF Bio: Eli is a gay, Afro-Puerto Rican teen born and raised in Liberty City’s Westport neighborhood. After his father disappeared and his mother struggled with addiction, he was raised by his abuela, a spiritual woman who believed deeply in old-world magic and traditions. Eli grew up surrounded by candles, prayers, and stories, but never believed he had any magic himself.

Being gay, in a rough neighborhood was difficult. One day, after years of bullying, Eli lashed out in fear and accidentally struck a classmate with lightning. Terrified, he told his abuela everything… and she just smiled and said, “Mijo, it’s waking up. Just like I knew it would.”

He always idolized superheroes, especially Lady Liberty. so her death really hit him hard. After that, Eli decided to step into the role of hero himself. He not really trained, or confident, but he just may be what Liberty City needs.

Storylines:
  • Learning to control his magic, and learning about where it came from.
  • Dealing with guilt from hurting his bully, and fear of potentially hurting others.
  • His parents potentially coming back into his life.
  • Building trust and friendship with other heroes. Maybe finding a love interest.
  • Getting pulled into magical drama way over his head.
  • Figuring out what kind of hero he wants to be

Notes: He is a cinnamon roll. Treat him kindly.
Bilingual. Often speaks Spanglish when he’s flustered. He casts some spells in Spanish.
Gay magic boy loosely inspired by Wiccan

Should I have gone without the mind-screwy aspect of her power? Yes. Does it give her the vibe of a gimmick villein of the week feel? Also yes.
