Emily smiled when Crow accepted the name Nevermore, and expressed that all of his names are his names, even The Crow. She comments with a nod, "Hm. That's an interesting way to look at names," She then speaks, "Right. The three of us haven't really introduced ourselves to you, have we?"

"My name is Emily. It's nice to meet you, Nevermore," Emily gave a smile to the Crow after giving her introduction.

She then speaks, "We should probably get out of here. We're practically the only ones left in this cafe!"

With that, she heads out of the cafe with the Crow.

The fourth day of Christmas dawned on New York. And as the final preparations for day four of Luka's Twelve Days of Christmas Parties were being made, Luka himself decided to pass his time between now and the start of the party by seeing to an important matter. That matter being Emily Sanderson and her belief that Luka was a frat boy. Luka had no intention of letting that stand. And events with Ashley the day prior had given Luka the perfect piece of evidence to shatter that belief. After all, none of those faux Greco cavemen could have been capable of handling Ashley's family drama as swiftly and as efficiently as Luka had. And once Emily was made aware of this, she would no doubt immediately come to realize that her first impression of Luka had been erroneous and would subsequently heap upon him all the praise and validation that he truly deserved.

And so, after a quick search on social media and a limo ride through College Country, Luka found himself standing in front of a building known simply as 'the Dorms'. According to his findings, this place would be where Luka would most likely run into Emily at this time of day. And so it was that Luka looked about him for any sign or indication of where it was that Emily could be.

For Luka, a quick search on Social Media would yield...not many results. He would find that Emily doesn't have a single profile on any of the popular social media websites. The closest he could find in a cursory search when it came to anything about Emily was on the school's student portal website, where the students can use the forums.

There...he would find a little more than where he could find her at a specific time....

One might think that life would become a lot better after receiving a power to literally write out what happens next, right?

Unfortunately, that simply isn't the case. Life continued on as normal for Emily during the time after that incident...and that meant continuing to bear the consequences of her perceived crime. For the entire break, Emily had doubled down on her work in her classes, all to avoid possible expulsion. If any of her assignments required her to post in the Forums on the Student Portal Website, she would quickly write her post, and then log off before she could read any possible harassing posts from Mallory or her cronies.

Considering what had happened with how she gained her Eidolon, she also decided to try and do any research and investigation she can on the mysterious organization, EDEN, Santana, the creature, anything she could think of for a lead on what to do, in order to uphold her end of the deal. Unfortunately, it felt like she got nowhere and almost ended up falling down Internet Rabbit Holes.

Both of these tasks left her with little time to actually write a story to her heart's content and to her mind's imagination.

Yesterday, her parents even called her to scream at her for plagiarizing Mallory. Considering Mallory was her childhood friend...it was only natural that her parents believed her. Emily and Mallory were like sisters once upon a time. Her protests and attempts to explain herself practically fell on deaf ears. After the screaming session was done, she was warned to do better in her studies and to not waste time writing stories anymore. It wouldn't be until after that, she realized a more embarrassing fact:

Ashley Whitlock heard all of it!

Emily couldn't say anything to her roommate; She could only leave the room completely mortified and spend the rest of the day at the school's library until late at night, when she was sure Ashley would be asleep.

For the entire weekend, Emily dealt with a flurry of thoughts that came with comprehending the unreal situation of gaining this strange power, and most of them were terrible. It got to the point where it felt like focusing on homework, studying, and researching was a relief, because focusing on that quieted her mind at least for a little bit.

Running had a similar effect! Focusing on her pace, her breathing, her stride, and the scenery around her helped. It used to be that running was a good method to get inspiration for her stories, along with listening to music. Now, it serves as a way to relieve the stress she felt. It's part of her normal morning routine, provided there weren't any morning classes on schedule.

...What she didn't expect to see this morning was Luka standing in front of the Dorms. Recalling that his power had a certain radius that could affect people, she stopped a fair distance away from him, hoping that he wouldn't use his Eidolon. After a moment of catching her breath, she asks him confused, "Why are you here?"

She then realizes something, and she asks him, "Is there another 'Incident' we need to handle?" She was being careful not to mention the Eidolons or the organization. She didn't want anyone watching to realize that they were the mysterious trio who got in Ray's way at the diner.

Ever since the incident with Mallory, Emily never left her journal alone anywhere. She has her journal...her Eidolon, Scheherazade, with her on her person. Granted, Emily did have to put the journal and pen in a small pack in order to make sure that it didn't get ruined with her sweat.

"No incidents to worry about today, but there is something else that needs handling." Luka said. "Namely, the fact that when we first met, you had the impudence, the audacity, the unmitigated gall to describe me - Me! Luka Durand! - as a frat boy!" The sound of several people gasping in shock could be heard then, though where it came from could not be discerned. "Needless to say, I have no intention of letting this stand. So tell me, Emily Sanderson... Could a mere frat boy muster the necessary clout to clear away all the obstructions put in place by Ashley's father to prevent Ashley from changing her surname? I think not! Do you know who could though? ME! That's who! And that is exactly what I've done!" Luka threw his arms out wide to either side of him then. His eyes closed, his nose lifted haughtily to the sky, and a satisfied grin adorned his face as he prepared to receive his praise. "What do you think of that, eh?" Luka asked arrogantly. "Do you still think I'm just some frat boy now?"

Ashley would look at her wallet and see that it is nearly empty, while she already had her tuition and her part of the rent covered for the foreseeable future she still needed to get some hustles if she wanted to keep food in her stomach. Being Professor Rudolph's student aide can only pay her so much and she had limits on the hours she put in.

And as for that man, well she would rather starve than touch that bank account.

She find herself walking across Mario's, it seems that the restaurant is now back in normal business after that incident. She wonders if that Agency could take her as an intern or something, certainly an option she should keep in the back pocket.

...

There is also that thing with Emily, she is half tempted to break their agreement and see why the hell is she on a shouting match early in the morning but not yet. Maybe if she got directly involved she would barge in but unless she made the initiative she won't comment or intervene.

Emily could only raise an eyebrow when Luka brought up the fact that she had described him as a frat boy. She could immediately tell that the sounds of people gasping was from his Eidolon. She listens to Luka continue speaking, telling her of how he helped Ashley (which brought more suspicion to him), and how he expected her to immediately change her mind about him.

Words...could not express her feelings about the absurdity of this moment right now. She had to restrain herself from rubbing her face and potentially getting sweat in her eyes. She honestly felt secondhand embarrassment from how Luka was behaving, but she doubted he felt any embarrassment right now.

After a beat of silence while Luka was in his pose, expecting praise to be lobbed to him, Emily finally speaks! Her tone is deadpan in disbelief,

"...You mean...to tell me...that you came all the way here, helped my roommate so that she is in a position of being indebted to you, just so you can tell me, only one person out of the entire world's population, that you are not a frat boy?"

This guy needs a reality check....

She soon answers him, clearly not impressed, "Yes. You are still a frat boy,"

She sighs and she brings out her phone out of the bag with her journal and pen inside, which had been tracking her run, and proceeds to inform him after bringing up the dictionary entry, "Oxford Dictionary: A frat boy is a young man who behaves in a boisterous or foolish manner considered typical of members of some college fraternities,"

She then puts the phone away and she asks him seriously, "How many parties have you gone to this week? This month? You've already boasted of connections and wealth, but what skills do you bring to the table? What exactly do you want to do in your life as a career? What are your aspirations?"

"...You mean...to tell me...that you came all the way here, helped my roommate so that she is in a position of being indebted to you, just so you can tell me, only one person out of the entire world's population, that you are not a frat boy?" Emily said.

"Correctamundo!" Luka happily supplied, still waiting for that praise he was expecting.

"Yes. You are still a frat boy,"

A vine boom and another, even more shocked round of gasping immediately followed Emily's pronouncement as Luka looked at her again, his face having shifted from eager anticipation of praise to dumfounded confusion. "...Come again?" Luka asked as he watched Emily pull out her phone and look something up on it.

"Oxford Dictionary:" Emily stated. "A frat boy is a young man who behaves in a boisterous or foolish manner considered typical of members of some college fraternities,"

"...W-Weal my bois-uh. ...Well my boisterous foolishness is on a far larger scale than what could be considered typical o-" Was all Luka had time to say before Emily cut in.

"How many parties have you gone to this week? This month?" She asked. "You've already boasted of your connections and wealth, but what skills do you bring to the table? What exactly do you want to do in your life as a career? What are your aspirations?"

Luka blinked in confusion for a moment, he clearly hadn't been prepared for Emily to react like this. He was quick to find his footing again and begin to answer Emily's questions though. "I have hosted three parties this week. And have hosted a total of eight this month so far. I'll have hosted twelve parties by the end of the month and I'll have hosted five parties more by the fifth of January." Luka boasted. "As for skills, I've got more dashing good looks and charismatic charm than I know what to do with, a green belt in Chun Kuk Do, all the planning skills necessary to organize 24 different parties in a month, and am an undisputed master of the Indy Ploy.* When it comes to what I want to do for a career, jobs are for the 99%. So long as I don't get sent to prison or spark a massive scandal, my trust fund will ensure I need never work a day of my life. And aspirations?"

Luka snickered as that last word left his mouth, as if he found the very concept of aspiring for something to be the most hilarious joke he could think of. Were she paying attention to his face though, Emily might notice that Luka's smile no longer reached his eyes. "Aspirations are for idiots." He declared. "They're a whole lot of hard work for something that will mean absolutely nothing in the end. A hundred years from now, I and everyone I know will be dead, and no one will remember anything I've ever done. And if I had been swallowed whole by an alligator as a child, the world today would be almost entirely the same. The only reason I do anything at all is because my Id can't stand sitting around doing nothing all day and my Superego simply cannot countenance me not being the center of attention."

*The next time Emily looked at the palm of her left hand, she would find a post-it note stuck there with the words 'Also, my Eidolon can warp reality.' written on it.

Emily was glad that she asked her questions when she did, because hearing Luka start to voice his defense almost caused her to laugh.

"Was Luka's defense really going to be an equivalent to 'I'm louder and dumber than the typical Frat Boy!'?" She couldn't help but briefly wonder to herself.

Regardless, she does listen as Luka answers her questions. When he mentioned the number of parties he hosted, her eyebrows rose. She felt tired just hearing that he hosts that many parties. But that also proved her point about him being a Frat Boy. Seventeen parties total for the Christmas and New Year...!

She listens quietly and intently as he lists his skills; His charisma and skills in martial arts that were developed by an actor weren't as promising as his organization skills and his ability to improvise. However, the fact that he is keen on using the Indy Ploy is concerning, especially considering their situation now, where they will need plan things out effectively to survive. At this point, she would have to hope that Luka doesn't get them killed.

Then came Luka's answer about aspirations. She has been paying attention to his expressions, and she sees how his smile didn't reach his eyes. His answer gave voice to her darker thoughts when it came to aspirations. She isn't sure whether she is understanding how he feels, or if she's just projecting her own emotions onto his answer, but either way she drew the same conclusion from that answer:

He was trying to give up on his hopes and dreams! Because something horrible happened when he tried to pursue them!

Before she could even answer in agreement, she felt a different part of herself make its appearance in her own mind and emotions. It felt like a fire within her heart!

No...that's not right! This sort of thing is why I want to become a writer...! Stories encouraged me to keep trying, to keep going in my life! I want my stories to be that light for others too...!

She sighed through her nose, as she thought over her answer to Luka. Her expression had significantly softened as she listened to his words about how nothing would change if he died when he was a child. Her voice is less judgmental and more pensive as she simply states, "I see..."

She looks around at the Christmas decorations, and she recalls a favorite factoid. She hoped that bringing it up would change the discussion to a more lighthearted topic for a brief moment, while still being relevant. A small smile crosses her face as she speaks, "You know...there's evidence that the contrary is possible. It's all around us right now," She nods towards the Christmas decorations all around them.

She figured he wouldn't understand what she meant, so she informs him,

"Did you know that Christmas used to be a minor holiday that not many people celebrated? That changed after Charles Dickens wrote 'A Christmas Carol'. That particular story has not only caused the holiday to become popular, but it also became a cultural force that changed the world for the better. And guess what? That story was published in 1843. That's more than 100 years ago, and we still remember the author's name and that story,"

She isn't sure if that fact would impress Luka as it impressed her, so she decided to keep it brief. She sighed, "...Sorry for the tangent. But do you understand what I'm saying? Consider me a Jacob Marley at this moment...

You are a Frat Boy now, but you can change for the better. Wealth, Appearances, even your physical and mental capabilities will fade in time if you do nothing,"

....Why am I even saying all of this? Why am I trying to help him? He may not even listen to me...

One would think a near death experience, a sudden increase in sentience and acquiring of literal superpowers would drastically alter the Crow's daily routine... and it had, though perhaps not as much as one might believe.

In the day or so since fleeing the scene of the destroyed Mario's, the Crow had been surveying their territory only slighter closer than usual, keeping an eye out for any weird activity that may resemble what they had experienced with their new comrades. They'd even spread word to some of the other crows about the man who's phone the Crow had stolen in case he returned to the area, though with a warning not to directly engage, merely observe. In a time that no longer existed, that man had been responsible for the Crow and his comrades' death, and while it seemed that such a thing may have been unintended, the Crow was not about to risk another birds' life. They didn't need that on their conscience...

Conscience, huh? Yes, it seemed the Crow had one of those now, or at least that's what they assumed this new feeling of weight each of their individual thoughts had was. The sense that, from now on, every decision they made might have wider spread consequences that what they intended. That everything they did was not part of something much larger than they could even comprehend with their increased awareness. It was thrilling, but also incredibly disconcerting, and they weren't exactly sure how to deal with it. So they didn't. They pushed the thoughts down as far as they could and decided that, should they continue for too long, they would ask one of their human allies for insight. Perhaps they would be able to make sense of these new thought and feelings in a way that Crow was unable.

Speaking of his human allies, the Crow hadn't seen much of them in the past couple of days. He assumed they had their own human concerns to attend to. However, on the fourth day of Christmas, when the Crow caught sight of Ashley on his territory, he decided it was best to check in with her. Of the three humans he'd spoken to, Ashley was the one he knew the least, but from what he had seen of her, she seemed quite astute and level-headed. He landed on top of a car close to her, pausing for a moment to clear the inside of his left wing before addressing her. "Good day, Ashley," he said. He glanced over at Mario's. "Am I to assume your surveying the area in which we had our brush with death? Fear not, for I have informed the other crows of the man who attacked us, and they will be keeping an eye out for him and any other shenanigans that mat happen in the area."

The Crow had yet to grasp the idea of small talk, it seemed.

"You know...there's evidence that the contrary is possible, all around us right now," Emily said with a nod towards the Christmas decor surrounding them.

"Is there?" Luka said as he looked to the decorations. His smile tensing up as he wondered if Emily was about to ask if he'd like to take a moment to talk about their lord and savior Jesus Christ.

"Did you know that Christmas used to be a minor holiday that not many people celebrated? That all changed after Charles Dickens wrote 'A Christmas Carol'." Emily continued, proving Luka wrong in his assumption to his great relief. "His hard work in writing that story has not only caused the holiday to become popular, but it also became a cultural force that changed the world for the better. And guess what? That story was published in 1843. That's more than 100 years ago, and we still remember the author's name and that story,"

"...I suppose we do." Luka said as the relief on his face gave way to something unreadable.

"...Sorry for the tangent. I'll finish by saying this: Consider me a Jacob Marley: You are a Frat Boy now, but you can change for the better."

For a moment, the smile reached Luka's eyes again, as something akin to a nostalgic sort of fondness rose to the surface of that inscrutable expression...

"Wealth, Appearances, even your physical and mental capabilities will fade in time if you don't take action,"

...Only to be overtaken by a pained wince mixed with of the look of someone who had remembered something bad after having briefly forgotten it.

A moment later, a sad smile settled onto Luka's face and a mirthless chuckle shook itself free of him. "You say that as if taking action would do anything other than delay the inevitable." Came Luka's reply. "...But I think I've wallowed in enough nihilism for one day." Luka straightened up then, all negativity driven from his face through sheer force of will. "As you have asked, so too shall you be asked in turn. What skills do you bring to the table? What exactly do you want to do in your life as a career? What are your aspirations?"

As Luka listened to her speak, Emily took stock of his reactions. She saw the relief when he heard that she was talking about Charles Dickens, and how his relief gave way to something unreadable. She spotted the smile reaching his eyes when she told him that he can change for the better.

Annnnd there it goes! She blew it by giving him the hard facts. She mentally swore at herself when she saw that.

"You say that as if taking action would do anything other than delay the inevitable." Came his answer.

To that, she simply shrugged and she answers him, "Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But I'm sure your Superego and Id can agree that the inevitable is not an excuse to just give up; To just lay down and die,"

All four of us took that deal to come back to life after all...

"...But I think I've wallowed in enough nihilism for one day." Just like that, the nihilism versus hope conversation abruptly came to an end.

Her eyebrow rose up when Luka turned the questions back to her. Considering that the both of them literally just met the other day, Emily didn't feel comfortable telling him everything about herself. Her body even tensed at the thought, especially remembering how her childhood friend of all people had betrayed her. Besides, was her aspiration really not obvious?

But then, she realized something that influenced how she could go about her answer. She laughs a bit, before she begins, "Luka...this whole conversation started because you came here to boast and change my mind about you being a frat boy,"

She crosses her arms and gives a smile, and she suggests before he can take her previous statement as an outright refusal to answer, "Tell you what: I'll give you an answer for each of the questions, every time I see you've changed from being a frat boy,"

She finishes, "For now, I'll give you one of my skills as an answer, in return for today's conversation,"

She then proceeds to answer his question, "I can run five miles without stopping at a pace of about nine and a half minutes per mile. Of course, considering what happened the other day, I'm working on my pace and my sprints, just in case,"

"Good day, Ashley," he said. He glanced over at Mario's. "Am I to assume your surveying the area in which we had our brush with death? Ashley's thoughts snapped back to reality as she try to find the source of the voice her eyes would soon on the Crow's and a sigh of relief escaped her mouth, she is getting a bit more paranoid these days.

And perhaps she should really be.

"Nevermore right? That is actually a good call, I don't how we're going to take advantage of that but information is always a good thing to have." she addressed the Crow with Emily's given name, she must admit that it was far better than Corvid, the name she planned to bestow. It appears that literature is a good source of names for pets.

"I'm not really scouting per se, more like searching for some side hustle." she admitted to the Crow as raised her old phone to pretend that she is taking a call before nodding to Nevermore. He probably didn't have a concept of money and paid labor as a crow.

"How's the first days of being sentient treating you, I could give some advice but your case is novel in my perspective."

Maybe someone from the Organization would give him a better advice but the topics they could discuss are quite few.

Luka quirked an eyebrow at Emily's unwillingness to answer the same questions she asked him. That was all he did in response though. Considering what he had dug up while looking for her, Luka wasn't all the surprised to learn that Emily had trust issues. He was mildly offended that she thought he'd need her life story if he wanted to bring a dagger to her back, but he didn't let that show either.

"Six miles an hour for fifty minutes is pretty impressive already. I look forward to seeing how that improves." Luka offered his compliments. "Either way, after all that running out in all this Winter weather, you must be as cold as you are exhausted... As luck would have it though, I know this nice little place not too far from here that does some delicious hot cocoa. Might I interest you in a little pre-workout drink? My treat, of course."

Emily noticed the quirked eyebrow, but she was relieved that Luka didn't press further. She relaxed a bit when he decided to respond to the answer she gave him instead of saying anything about her decision. After he gave his compliments, she smiled once again and gave a soft, "Thanks," in response. It's clear that she appreciated the fact that he acknowledged her efforts.

When he mentioned that it was cold and she must be exhausted, she noticed that she was indeed tired, and she was starting to get cold again. She hadn't been so cold while she was running, but standing still was a completely different matter!

Then he offered to treat her to hot cocoa at a little place not too far from here. At first she figured he might be talking about Mario's. But, she remembered the things that she wanted to accomplish today. She answered him sincerely, "I really do appreciate the offer, Luka. But, I do have a lot of work I need to take care of today. No rest for the wicked after all. Plus, I bet there's some party-related matters you'd want to get to as well, huh? Maybe we can have that cocoa next time,"

"Plus...I don't want to become someone who takes advantage of him," Emily’s thoughts crept in after she gave her refusal.

Shortly after that thought passes through her mind, that familiar thunderstruck feeling hits Emily: She had an idea!

“Wait a minute…Wealth…” Emily speaks lowly at first. Luka can easily see the gears within her mind turn rapidly as her eyes widen. She suddenly states to Luka, still staring at him, “Of course! Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!”

Immediately realizing the possible confusion, she speaks to clarify, “I have an idea on how we can uphold our end of that deal, but I will need to speak with Ashley before I can get into further details with you and Nevermore. You’re not only a frat boy, but you’ve proven to be a muse as well today!”

She then starts to hurry towards the dorm as she bids Luka, “I’ll talk to you later, Luka!”

"Ah, I see Emily told you the new name she gave me," the Crow said. "I suppose if you find that easier to refer to me as, you may call me that as well." He puffed his chest out when Ashley praised him for his foresight on gathering information. He had no idea what she meant when she mentioned searching for a 'side-hustle' but he didn't want to ruin his moment of pride by revealing gaps in his knowledge so he merely nodded in what he hoped looked like a knowing way.

"Most excellent," he said, only to hesitate when she asked about his newly attained sentience. "Oh. That." His posture deflated ever so slightly as he considered what to say. "It's been... well, it's not been that different. I suppose I'm taking more note of you humans and your routines, and I have better insight into the conversations I overhear." He tried to stand up a little straighter. "It's been most illuminating..." Despite his best efforts, his voice betrayed a uncertainty.

Ashley nodded at the Crow's words although it is clear to her that said sentience is giving Crow few problems. Maybe she could lend a hand...

"I assume that it also puzzled you at times." she noted, not asked to the Crow. "Human societies tend to be very complicated and ceremonial after all."

Her voice is laced with a bit of cynism. Ashley is a human studying history and even she can't help but perplexed at times after all.

"Don't be afraid to ask me any questions you have, I'll do my best to answer." she offered to the Crow as she sat on a nearby bench. Wait that laundry shop has a Help Wanted on the window.

That could wait, helping Nevermore goes first.

"I suppose there is and I suppose we can." Luka said in response to Emily's words. He could tell getting her to actually have that cocoa with him would be a challenge though. She had that not wanting to take advantage of the rich dude look about her.

“Wait a minute…Wealth…” Emily spoke up then.

"Wealth?" Luka asked in confusion.

“Of course! Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!” Emily exclaimed in realization.

"Think of what sooner?" A now thoroughly out of the loop Luka asked.

“I have an idea on how we can uphold our end of that deal, but I will need to speak with Ashley before I can get into further details with you and Nevermore. You’re not only a frat boy, but you’ve proven to be a muse as well today!” Emily explained before dashing off to do who knows what. “I’ll talk to you later, Luka!”

Luka waved weakly after her, stunned by the abrupt turn and ending the conversation took. After a moment, Luka hummed thoughtfully to himself. "A muse?" Luka murmured as the fondly nostalgic smile returned to his face. "...I suppose I'll take what I can get. For now, at least."

When Ashley sat down on a nearby bench, the Crow quickly fluttered his way down next to her. He pecked as the wooden seat as he tried to think what to say. "I mean, I suppose it's not all the different," he eventually said. "We crows have our own ceremonies and rituals and ways of doing things. We have our codes and etiquette. But with humans it seems so much more..." He paused, trying to think of the right word. "Well, just more. It's all so intricate, complicated. I have no idea how you humans are able to coexist as well as you do." He raised his head to Ashley. "You, Emily and that other human were able to come together to avert a horrible crisis, and get that man who almost killed us to leave without any further violence. Yet you're all so different, and I feel there were things about how that whole situation was handled that I can't quite... grasp. It all feels very beyond me, and until now, things that were beyond me never bothered me." "You do realize that the other guy's name is Luka right?" Ashley asked, aware that some sort of beef is happening between the two. She won't be stepping into that mess anytime soon but she would be grateful if they keep it under control.

"Admittedly I'm curious at the customs and etiquette you're referring, it's not everyday you could get a primary source for that topic." Ashley spoke to Nevermore as he continued speaking. She wouldn't miss Nevermore's implication but feel a little lost on how she could help.
