Howdy 👋🏽 I’ve been playing D&D for about 5 years and RPing pbp for almost a decade. I’m looking for a group that either knows or is willing to learn D&D 5e rules. I’m more than happy to teach people willing to learn and I have access to many official adventure modules as well as being comfortable creating my own setting and plot, whatever genre the group is interested in. I’m looking for people that are willing to post multiple times a week and I’m not stringent on grammar, formatting, etc. What I care about is a willingness to roleplay and nothing more. Once I find a group of 3-5 players er could determine what genre/tone people are hoping to RP (thought my preference is gothic horror)

I'll throw my hat in the ring. I'm currently in two 5e campaigns; one with 2014 rules, the other with 2024 rules. I'm not the best on the rules, but I know enough to get by. What I don't know, I can look up. I have several character ideas, but I'll wait for more info on the campaign setting before I decide on who I'd like to go with.

I will admite to a polite interest. Not huge on gothic horror myself but I can accommodate.

Interested, provided it's a D&D 2014 5e game.

Gonna watch for plot.
I've been a dm for a decade now, am currently running curse of strahd, the crooked moon and a homebrew also in a couple campaigns as well, from one that is a homebrewed system to the essence system.

While I've never blended literate roleplay with any campaigns (normally it's voice chat over roll20 or discord)

I can't make a decision until I see the plot, but gothic horror is my cup of tea.

Played D&D 5e like once or twice, but I'm not against cracking the rulebook open again

Presuming it's a 2014 5e campaign - or 3/3.5 - I would be interested.

For some reason I wasn’t getting notifications for this. Hi y’all 👋🏽 I would be using primarily 2024 updated rules for 5e, but I’d allow 2014 character options if they haven’t been given a 2024 update

As far as adventure, I was thinking either Curse of Strahd (gothic horror and an adventure I’ve run nearly a dozen groups through) or Tomb of Annihilation (think Indiana Jones plus dinosaurs), whichever gets more interest.

@CajunRobinHood Well, I'll have to bow out, then. I A.) don't have access to the rules for D&D 5.5 and B.) purposefully don't have access because I don't like the changes they made to the system from original 5e.

Best of luck, and let me know if you decide to go with a different edition.

@CajunRobinHood I will have to bow out as well, because of the same reasons.

Best of luck and I wish you Happy Gaming! ^_^

I am quite curious why there’s so much aversion to the updated rules. Nothing drastic changed, it’s mainly making definitions and descriptions more clear. Not trying to change y’all’s mind about playing, just trying to understand a mindset I keep coming across online but not with in-person players.

I'm certain there are plenty of players who have moral or otherwise personal objections to the system. I would be lying if I said I didn't have a few of those, myself.

That said, even if those issues did not exist, the issues I have with the mechanics alone would be sufficient to convince me not to change to 5.5 D&D.

For me, the changes they made for 2025 fall into two camps; The changes I don't like, and the few changes that could have easily been an errata.
For example; I was never a big fan of the inspiration mechanic. It felt too arbitrary. In 5.0 D&D, you could basically ignore it, because it was barely mentioned. 5.5e makes it basically a mandatory part of the game, with feats and racial abilities that reference it. They also did not make it less arbitrary.
I do not like the addition of the special abilities for weapons; They generally don't seem to add enough to justify making combat go even slower.
I'm not against the idea of players getting a free feat at first level, but instead of just making that an optional rule - maybe including a list of suggested feats to choose from - they chose to tie them to the character's backstory. Instead of just fixing the background features mechanic, they tossed it out the window and made character backgrounds even less unique.

Be sure, this list in not exhaustive.

If these were just individual mechanics I didn't care for in an otherwise good, but unique, edition of Dungeons and Dragons I would consider trying it out. However, they're not; They're changes I don't care for to a version of the game I already liked. There's no incentive for me to invest time and money into learning 5.5e, because it's not different enough to justify making the change, with the little that is different being almost exclusively things I don't like.

1) It's exactly because of the lack of drastic changes that the updated rules feel like a completely unnecessary reinvention of the wheel. The changes to the rules also throw confusion to those who have already memorized the rules for 2014 D&D 5e. If WotC is going to make a new D&D system, why don't they go all the way to make D&D 6e, instead of butchering 5e when it's already great? Not to mention, players already have their home-brew rules to help with 5e if any table feels like something is lacking.

2) I really do not like how they changed the Classes' Level Ups by making everyone choose their subclass at Level 3. They completely betrayed their own logic on how the classes work in a game mechanics and narrative sense all for the sake of standardization.

Having the clerics, warlocks, sorcerers choose who their patron, deity's domain, and their bloodline magic at third level makes no sense. Sure, it could work in a narrative where said characters don't know, but that narrative can still be achieved with the classes' subclasses being chosen at Level 1. By making the characters choose at Level 3, they've essentially pigeon-holed those characters into that particular narrative.

3) This reinvention of the wheel feels more like an arbitrary cash grab after a series of mess-ups on WotC/Hasbro's part. Not to mention, I still haven't forgotten how they tried to revoke the OGL. The links to videos about said incident are still in my signature. I am not willing to reward them for their behavior leading up to the creation of 2024 Rules.
