"What did I misssssssssssssss?"

-Salbjörg of the Deep

While the others reflected or did whatever it was they did, Salbjörg decided to make an appearance. She walked down the hall, completely ignored Zoppy, and found her way into the main kill room where it looked like a bomb had went off. Fortunately, many of the corpses had been devoured or were inside the pit where she didn’t have to look at them. Maybe having some vermin crawling around wasn’t entirely a bad thing. Yes, after today, she would need to re-evaluate her score for rats.

She gave the Oracle a respectful bow before ignoring everyone else and marching up to Kleine. After taking note of her worried state, she looked at the ghost, suspecting whatever happened had to be his fault. He was in charge of defenses while everyone else was out, at least she remembered. Given the chest was open, it was clear what the problem was.

Salbjörg emptied the contents of the priest’s brown bag into the the chest before pulling up a whiteboard that read “Fixed it.”

Zogi sputtered, gasped, lungs still heaving from the strain and stress of a truly violent struggle. The dagger was slick with blood; his own hands shook from the disturbing sensation of trying to stab through bone. In the end, the shrine did do its job, beheading every single one of the fledgling adventurers.

But that was the trouble with it, no? They would come back soon. They would come back again. And they would do so, having now known what more to expect from the dungeon.

"YEAH, BOYS! THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! STOKE UP THE FLAMES, FELLAS, WE EATING GOOD TONIGHT!"

He chased away existential dread with exuberation instead.

It wasn’t until the body hit the floor, sans head, that the Kobold, Ent, and Naga Worker realized that the dwarf they had been laying into with righteous fury was dead. Even after that the Kobold stabbed it a few more times for good measure, while the others glanced to the side where the other adventurers had been, wary of retaliation for this death.

When they saw only more headless corpses, they breathed a sigh of relief, and when Zogi burst into a victory cheer they were the ones to join in. The ent drumming on its wooden chest with its great fists, the Kobold yipping with delight and the Naga giving Zoppy a tight squeeze of a hug before chanting ‘meat meat meat!” in anticipation of the feast that they’d be having tonight.

It was this raucous celebration that informed the Oracle that things had come to an end, because it was still trying to recover from its double discombobulation. It withdrew its head from its sky high view and back into the corridor its body was in.

This helped with its sense of position a lot, and so by the time the others were reviewing the battle it had enough of its senses together to join them.

It was in agreement with the whole watch idea, adding that “Our faithful servants must be spared from such a duty, tired as they were from their time under the hateful sun”

“Yes, those wretched invaders will know our tricks now, so we must swiftly expand our defenses once more with the boons we have gained from their demise!” It also agreed with Schnupfen before approaching the guillotine shrine and laying a hand upon it.

“You have done well, o sacred executioner, but I fear you shall not take them by surprise again” it said with quiet reverence. On top of being, well, a shrine, it also had the highest killcount out of anything in the dungeon and it was entirely questionable if they would have succeeded without it.

The Oracle held its hand for a long moment, before withdrawing it and returning to its bombast as it declared “Still, if they have learned to fear you, then we must take advantage of that fear! They will cower beyond your reach, where we may strike from afar, and then they will rush through in a panic, where they shall blunder into your fellows!”

Of course, they’d need more traps for that, and so the Oracle prepared to head into the dungeon core to start rolling for resources once again.

In a certain Reality Plenum, on a certain World With No Name, in a certain treehouse tavern in the midst of a certain Wandering Woods, on the night of the Tri-Lunar Convergence, a certain moth feykin oracle, her totally ordinary and unremarkable freelance photographer companion, and various other narratively unimportant patrons were still being regaled by the stories and songs of…

“And now, my dear friends,” Balthazar announced. “I believe it is time for the audience participation portion of tonight’s entertainment. Not to worry, I won’t be asking for anyone to come join me on stage for some song and dance,” he reassured with a croaking chuckle, while holding up a webbed hand. “Although if anyone does wish to do so, I certainly won’t prevent them! But, no, what I refer to is providing some assistance with my next tale. You see, I am often asked how I choose which of my many exciting adventures to entertain a particular gathering with, what inspires a particular tale. The answer very much depends. Often, the atmosphere and ambiance of the venue itself serves to inform me of the most suitable story to share, yet, on other special occasions, I allow a lucky listener to provide the theme for my next recounting. As I’m sure you may have deduced, this is one of those special times. Thus, I shall now choose from among you someone who seems to be a particularly interesting individual, someone to serve as a beacon, which shall reveal what topic I shall tell you of next. Perhaps the young lady with the camera? What might your name be, miss?”

“It’s Kate,” the girl in question replied with a small grin as she shared a glance with her companion. “Kate Carson.”

“Well, Miss Kate, if it’s not too much trouble, could you tell us what brings you here this fair evening, and what your plans might be once you depart?” The frog bard inquired.

“I’m just enjoyin’ a meal with my pal Morowa before we head out to do some… exotic animal photography,” Kate replied, putting her arm around her moth-like companion.

“Ah, so an excursion into the wilderness to seek a beast most illusive?” Balthazar asked, a gleam of interest shining in his bulbous eyes.

“Somethin’ like that,” Kate confirmed, her grin broadening.

“Yes, that should do quite nicely!” Balthazar declared. “For I, too, once participated in a hunt most perilous, for a beast most fearsome indeed. And, like Miss Kate, we also sought to capture this creature, rather than slay it,” the frog bard went on. “Although our methods were considerably more complex, and thus, considerably more challenging, than simply snapping a picture…”

“And so our tale draws to a close,” Balthazar concluded. “Peace and tranquility once again descended on Sporehaven and its surroundings, while an unwelcome visitor was returned to his own world, hopefully taking a new outlook on life with him. As for the further adventures of a certain elf and goblin, well…” he paused, a playful twinkle gleaming in a bulbous eye. “That, as they say, is another story…”
