The House of Alfarling is an old house, having ruled Salt Spire for many generations. The oldest tales of the spire speaks of a fleet that arrived at the island before the Ninefold was created, and that fleet was led by Alfar, their namesake and greatest hero. He navigated the Kraken Sea, guided by the north star. From then on, Alfar and his descendants have made Salt Spire their home, surrounded by seas with strong currents and a tendency for fierce storms. Fish and salt were always plentiful on the spire, but other commodities only became plentiful once the people of the Spire took to raiding and piracy. Even once the Spire became a part of the Ninefold, these practices did not seize, and there have always been times when the other holds levied accusations of piracy against their own vessels by Salt Spire. The truth of such accusations varied over the years, but even now there is no doubt that the black and silver banners of House Alfarling can strike fear into the captains of merchant and military vessels alike. House Alfarling maintains that the Kraken Sea is their territory, just as much as the island of Salt Spire itself.
The island of Salt Spire is a barren place, rocky and windswept. It is inhospitable, even to those that make it their home. The island is dominated by a series of fells, between which the population is concentrated in a few protected valleys. The grassy hillsides are dominated by sheep and goats, and trees remain small and weather-beaten. The coasts are likewise ragged, often characterised by sheer cliffs, though where valley meets sea there are protected harbours. Between these, there are protected places in between cliffs, where fjords cut deep. Many ships use these to protect themselves from storms and remain safe from the sea, but they demand knowledge of currents and winds to be wholly safe. The Kraken Sea at large is dangerous to navigate, where winds swiftly change and the currents are unpredictable. This has spawned many tales of sea monsters that have taken the ships that never returned. More likely however, is that any ship lost was smashed against rocks by a storm or taken by boarding underneath banners of black and silver. House Alfarling’s power was never born out of trade, let alone the wealth of sheep and salt, rather power came from the knowledge and control of the Kraken Sea, and the many sailors that manned their ships.
This windswept spire and the storm prone seas that surrounds it have formed the people and live on island and sea. Above all, it has made the people and their rulers practical. After all, everyone is equal before the storm. Everyone must play their part on a ship that dares the storm, if they are to make it out alive. This means that responsibility and competency are the core values of the Spire, that the people live by. Sacrifice means nothing to a storm, but words are binding so long as they hold a purpose. The winds a fickle, but House Alfarling is not like the wind, nor are they like the storm. They are certain, they are the crew of a ship that would dare current, wind, and storm. Lord Beorthmaer has ruled the Spire for decades. He is a seasoned Lord, and once rowdy in his youth, this has given way to becoming diligent ruler and skilled tactician. Proud and stubborn, he was the first to raise his banners in support of King Leoric in response to the rebellion, and he was the last to abandon King Leoric and fold in Rowan’s favour. Oaths publicly spoken were not changed by the direction of fickle winds but only abandoned after Rowan secured an alliance with the Phorian Coast, and Leoric’s days as king were obviously numbered, and unable hold up his part of the feudal relationship. The fleet of Salt Spire withdrew in good order, allowing the Phorian fleet free access without battle. Only once Leoric was defeated did Beorthmear engage in negotiations to swear a new oath of fealty to a new king, and in these events preserving both his fleet and the perception that he followed his oath to its practical end. Beorthmear’s wife, Lady Inga, is his senior by several years and shares her husband’s practicality, even though hers is far less constrained by convention and perception. She remains utterly devoted to her children, and would commit any deed, however bloody, to secure their future. Beorthmaer has always been the public face of House Alfarling, attempting to maintain their perception and legacy, whereas Inga has always been his shadow. |
