[OOC] Star Trek : The Journey Continues

It has been over 30 years since the USS Enterprise started its voyage of discovery. Starfleet has made some improvements since then in their starships, and lately have been sending out more scouting ships than ever before. Science vessels have also been in high demand, since Starfleet believes in learning about the newly discovered uninhabited planets. Soon, they created a new class of starships, one in which is small and great for scouting, but also is equipped with scientific equipment and the personnel to operate it. The new Nova class has taken off and you are on board one of the very first ones.

The crew of 78 people is full of qualified officers from Starfleet. From Engineers to Scientists, it is full of interesting people. Welcome aboard the USS Tricyion.

Alright, obviously since this is a Starship, it needs a crew. Down below is a list of positions that are needed to make this ship operate. There might be some problems though, with figuring out what rank everyone on the ship is. Aside from the Captain position (I'm playing Captain so that the RP can continue on effectively), every rank is going to be randomized. Before you create your character, I need you to tell me what general position you would like your character to be in, I'll use a list and a random number generator to figure out what rank you are to make it fair for everyone, instead of having everyone call positions. Since that does tend to get confusing after a while.

There is also another little something I'm adding in here. Since this takes place 30 years after the Original Series, you are allowed to have your character related to someone from the original crew. Before you create your character, tell me which person it is so I can make a note of it. I'll only allow up to 2 characters being related to the same person, and you have to take about it with the other person. This is on a first come first served basis.

Unfun Part: Rules

1. You may have heard most GM's saying "GM's word is law..."blah blah blah. Well, All I ask is that you guys listen if I try to tell you something important. Especially if I tag you in a post.

2. Please let me know if you are going to be gone for a few days or something via PM. That way if something major ends up happening (like your Chief Engineer and the ship nearly blows up or something) I can work around it.

3. At least once every two weeks is when I'm posting. If everyone has a post in before that, it will be updated sooner. IF YOU DO NOT POST WITHIN THIS TIME LIMIT I will kick you out of the RP since I want to keep things moving and I know RL gets in the way sometimes. That is why it is 2 weeks instead of the usual 1, and why I am stressing so heavily of please let me know if you are going to be gone.

4. I'm going to ask for 2 paragraphs per post, and be as thorough as you can. Let me know if you can only get one good paragraph. If you tell me, than I'll be fine with it.

5. Have fun with this. Unlike a lot of people, I grew up watching a lot of Star Trek with my dad owning every series that they made of it on DVD. I hope that you all enjoy it!

P.S. I edited the timeline a little, technically the Nova class wasn't created until 2370, and I'm technically having it around in 2295.

This has my interest though I will admit I have a very limited knowledge of star trek. I am aware however that they did have a wide variety of sci fi stuff and alien races, so would be allowed to make our own races?

Rachel was born into the Hellas Planitia Arcology a sealed city of 6.7 million built into a large impact crater and base to the starship manufacturing facilities of the red planet.

Her parents were engineers who both worked in the orbital assembly yards her mother is currently head of a cruiser development project and her father Head of Engineering Mars Academy.

A Fleet brat Rachel was trained from an early age to be a Star Fleet Officer by association. Then possessing a natural ability in Engineering her fate was sealed; she would be a Chief Engineer.

Her's was a good Childhood and she thrived in the Fleet school system becoming her City's Cadet Admirald by age 15.

Then entering the Academy at age 17 Rachel drove her fellow cadets mad by maintaining a perfect gpa without effort she eventually graduated top of her engineering class.

Her first fleet assignment was to the USS Gettysburg a Constellation class cruiser where she became second in command in Engineering by her fifth year.

Her second assignment was to the Mars Command Academy where she completed an advanced program before being assigned to the USS Lexington where she served as CE till it was placed in refitting program one year ago.

If she becomes a chief engineer, then she'ld be up on the bridge a lot. BlueSky wants a lead engineer figure since that is a position that a ship can't do without.

@BlueSky44 Is it true, the current year is 2315? I was doing the math to see exactly how my character is related to Nuyota Uhura from the original series (TOS). (Commander) Nyota Uhura was born January 19, 2233. That would make her 82 years old if she were still alive in 2315. For her to have a 27 year old son serving in Starfleet means she was 55 when he was born. Although, it is not impossible, just highly improbable. It would be more reasonable to make her my character's grandmother. But if you set the clock back about 25 years to 2290, it would still be after the time of TOS, but old enough for the canon characters to have had children old enough to be our character's ages.

One thing I wanna remind people about: Given our time period, the standard Starfeet uniform would be that of the movies II and onwards, not those of the original TV show.

Thank you for pointing this out, I accidently crunched my numbers based on when the Enterprise was destroyed instead of when the original series started.

That is mostly right, but actually those uniforms were also used in the first movie, just a slight variation of them.

Also, if you were Chief Security Officer, you'd be a Lieutenant (The Lieutenant Commander rank is generally for the doctor or chief engineer, but you can get promoted). Also, technically it would be Security Chief/Tactical Officer, whichever you would prefer to be officially called (I just looked this up to be sure I had my information right).

Also, everyone keep in mind that you can make two characters if you want to and think you can handle. I myself might make one more if need be.

Thank you very much for that clarification. Now Nuyota Uhura is only 62 and I could make my character 29. She would have had him at age 33. That would have given her plenty of time to serve aboard the Enterprise and have children later on in life.

A head of any department, given the position title of "Chief" is authorized to be a Lieutenant Commander (O4). You can place someone two grades below in a position if you have a deficiency of personnel and promote into the proper grade. Therefore, you could have a Lieutenant Junior Grade (O2) serving as a Chief of some department and then promote the officer to Lieutenant (O3) after they have completed some pre-specified time in grade requirement. This assumes you have no Lieutenants or Lieutenant Commanders available. Then promote the officer to Lieutenant Commander after another predesignated time in grade requirement. The only Commanders (O5) aboard ship should be the First Officer and maybe the Chief Medical Officer. The Second Officer, who is undoubtedly serving in some other capacity at Tactical, Security or Engineering would also be a Lieutenant Commander (O4). Pardon me, I lived this chit too long. I spent 21 years in the US Army, have been reading Military History for over 40 years and a fan of Star Trek much longer.

That I do know, but it also depends on which position it is. (Thank you for your service by the way, been meaning to say that for a little while now)

Also, it would be normal Lieutenant, I never said Junior Grade.

Believe it or not, Chekov was an Ensign, but was also the Navigator, many people also forget that many other characters who have held the Security Chief position in the Star Trek universe were not Lieutenant Commanders (Chekov is actually one of those who was also a Ensign with that position).

Here is my reference point Security Chief (Just using this position as an example since it is the one in question).

Only one of the people on this list started off as a Lieutenant Commander, and that was Tuvok from Voyager.

I did my research on this before I said anything about what rank everyone was. Also, since the crew only consists of 78 people and is small, I doubt they would have a Lieutenant Commander for every Chief position.

I understand what you are saying, and I value your opinion, it's just that I put a lot of research into this before I put the interest check up. From what class ship would be a not normally done one, to what ranks each position could be.

I also understand that you've been a fan of Star Trek for a while, I wasn't born until around Next Gen's run, but I was raised watching every series. I try to live up to the knowledge, and I'm doing my research so that I do this correctly. This is also only the second RP I am running, the first one didn't do so well, so I'm just really trying to get this going, and so it actually will continue running.

Now that I'm done with my small rant (I apologize for that), our crew needs another alien, so I'm going to go make an Andorian science officer (going to be an ensign in case anyone cares)

My character is obviously human. My favorite ST race is Klingon. That might be inappropriate given the time frame. I could do a second character, once I finish the first one.
