@agentnumalolYeah there's just something about competitive games that never fails to suck the fun out of things. It stops being about the experience and becomes solely about winning and comparing yourself to other people which is a recipe for miserable feelings.

Yeah I figured Tekken was pretty crazy as most good fighting games tend to have some bizarre elements to them that make them interesting. If I remember correctly isn't there a robot android girl who can throw her head at people? Either way I think it could work if someone was passionate about playing a character from Tekken, Street Fighter, or one of the fantastic fighting games.

A character from one of those games likely wouldn't be reliant on weapons as their martial skill would be enough handle most enemies. However it'd balance out in that they'd expend more energy and require more healing, as close quarters fighting is demanding and offers greater risk of injury.

It's funny that you guys mention ranked. Competitive games always intimidate me because there is always going to be "those guys" who learn every move, the number of frames it lasts, how much super armor it provides, the recovery frames, wavedashing,

You know the whole nine yards.

Meanwhile, I always seem to grab a "low tier" character and even if I'm good at the game I tend to get wrecked whenever I play against an actual human opponent. Unless the opponent is my friends in which case the winner is decided by who owns the game in question :)

You know since they have the most experience

@glwgameplayerYeah 'professional' gamers can be pretty unbearable. There's something kind of disparaging when a person pick's apart a game and reduces it to some ugly meta or statistical abuse instead of the actual game it was intended it to be.

Playing with friends is usually the best way to go with competitive games, unless you have a friend who's a toxic braggart who doesn't respect other people's feelings.

Emphasis is on had by the way. At some point, we got tired of his cheating and house rules and stopped inviting him to sleepovers and game sessions. I should have figured he was a cheater though considering one of my earliest memories of him is when he fell down and acted hurt so he could beat us at tag

Yeah, you're thinking of Alisa. Was the second character I played against online. It was not pretty. But yeah, the more I think about it, the more I'm actually kinda tempted to play a Mishima in this. They would be quite the opposite to John Marston - east vs west, close-range vs far-range, evil vs noble. I might work on something in the spare time, I'll let you know if I get it finalized and if I'm really into it.

It's less about trying to dominate other players so much as seeing how much farther you can get with what you learn. It also makes pro play understandable and more appreciable.

I'm still a scrub, though. But hey, being bad at something is the first step to being kinda okay at it.

@Majoras End Hello there! I'm happy to hear you have an interest in the forum. Zacharie from OFF might be doable as a character, but we already have a mercantile character in the form of the RE4 Merchant. Though he's a weapons merchant and Zacharie is more a general purpose merchant if I remember correctly.

Chara, from Undertale I'm assuming, could work.

It's funny you brought up Undertale since I had a discussion with someone regarding it not too long ago. I like the idea of adding Undertale, but I'm conflicted. The characters are interesting, there are some items, and a few interesting locations. However there are a few issues.

Tonally the game is largely about the merits of mercy and taking even a single life is treated with a lot of weight in game. Lots of characters currently, Quiet, Max Payne, even John Marston who is a good man, have killed probably truckloads worth of people on their own adventures. So the roleplay as a whole, which is rather combative, would be something jarring when compared to Undertale's tone.

Then again I already added Animal Crossing so maybe I'm overthinking things.

The 'monsters' in the game are also somewhat underpowered compared to our current line up, especially considering that a very stubborn child can casually commit genocide on their entire civilization with save scum powers.

That's not to say it can't work or that I don't want to have it. If anything I think it'd be kind of neat, having these otherwise very peaceful monsters dropped into a mess of a world with humans (Splicers, Zealot Columbians, Raiders, The Legion, Mercenaries, est) who are more monstrous then the 'monsters' ever could be.

Though if overpowered characters can be balanced in this roleplay there's nothing stopping underpowered characters from getting a little push.

Also having Chara around would be...interesting. If you're going with what I believe you're going with, then having a murderous, ultra violent, psychotically determined child in a dorky looking sweater would certainly spice things up. Though if you intend to play Chara like I assume you're going to I ask that you still cooperate and work with the group a bit.

After all nothing interesting comes from applying for a largely malevolent character and immediately trying to kill off people and fuck things up. If they have bad intentions build up to it gradually so there's some intrigue and character interaction before shit hits the fan.

The BATTER for example has been played very well by @Eventua. He/it works with the group, but still maintains their original rather dangerous intent. So far it seems hinted the Batter could one day turn on the group, but that just might be me reading into it too much. Regardless it's done rather well and is a good example of how to handle things.

@agentnumalol They do contract each other pretty strongly. I don't know Mishima's character well enough to say for certain but I think he and Marston would be good antithesis's to each other. So yeah just throw me a message if you're serious about making him and I'll be all ears.

When you put competitive play like that it seems much more understandable. I guess it's just some competitive players take things too seriously or just have a foul attitude about things with characters like that.

And yes. Being bad is the first step to eventually being good if you work hard and continue to do it.

Basically this. Like, I don't have quite the dedication to git gud at fighting games the same way I do other genres that encourage close examination and stylish application of the mechanics like beat 'em ups (doing a full S-rank run of DMC4 at the moment) and stealth games, but I do spend a fair amount of time playing around in training rooms trying to figure out the properties of all these moves and how to link them together on the fly. And I think the idea of competitive communities are pretty rad, with a bunch of players going over the mechanics and systems of a game they're passionate about with a fine-toothed comb and putting any claims of "depth" to the test as they climb that skill curve and better both their understanding of the game and their skills as players. And then they all meet in these big tournaments and put everything they've learned to the test against one another. And then you see these games really open up, with games that might be played as simple button mashers at a low level turning into this fast-paced minute-long package of strategy and epic mind games where everyone's carefully gauging their actions and making these calculated gambits based on how their opponents might respond.

But yeah, I love watching tournaments and seeing people have fun as well as seeing what creative new tech I might glean from them. I kinda hate this whole "competitive players ruin the fun/hate on you for not playing the game right" stereotype because I never see this from them or the communities and instead always see stuff like this discussion where you have people going on about how engaging in the metagame and learning how the mechanics work is somehow demeaning it as a game or something and it kinda rubs me the wrong way, you know? Like damn, let people play the game how they want to.

It's kinda hard to explain. I think most people have the most fun playing a game where their skill is near the same level. I'm a scrub and I always try and fight based on my gut instincts instead of concrete knowledge based on the specifics of a game's mechanics. Because of this I don't like really competitive players that much because playing a game with them is pretty rough, and playing online I tend to find very hardcore players that completely wreck me.

Basically, the competitive teams have the most fun playing with other competitive teams

Part of that is my fault though. I could learn the ins and outs of the game to improve myself but I tend to play games pretty casually. I just sit down, load up a video or TV show, and start playing a game at the same time

@lavulman@glwgameplayerI guess I'm operating largely off my own personal experience with competitive players which as not been anywhere close to find. The ones I met were always toxic, vain, rude, arrogant, and were obsessed with 'meta' to the point of throwing a hissy fit if anyone tried something that wasn't min-maxed garbage or played a character who 'sucked'.

I'm sure there's a positive side to competitive play and plenty of nice people out there involved in it, I just simply haven't met any.

Edit: ALSO if anyone tries to read Chara's mind all they'll likely hear is this on repeat

Also sorry that Snake is being anti social right now. It's just that quietly sneaking away seemed like what Snake would do when faced with unfamiliar faces. Especially because he can't call his support team to ask who is a friend and who is an enemy

Besides he'll end up at 2Fort one way or another

Right now I'm just giving Frozen some time to post with Kerrigan and Red a chance to post for Max Payne. In the mean time I have a question for all of you:

Are there any particular places you folks would like to see in game? I have a big ol' list of locations I roll from when people are exploring and the like. However it takes some time to make the maps and preparing them ahead of time runs the risk of wasted effort, since they might not get rolled up for quite a while if at all.

However if there were a few locations I had some popular consensus on that I could fudge the rolls for, it would allow me to get started now while I have tree time to ensure the maps all look nice and pretty.

So let me know if you have any preferences.

Oddworld has plenty of great ones, especially from Abe's Exoddus - Bonewerks, the Slig Barracks, or any of the areas in the necropolis are also interesting and varied.

I was thinking of somewhere spooky. Seeing our characters handle a horde from L4D's airport or solving puzzles in Spencer Mansion sounds real dope (Disclaimer: I have never played the early RE's, just 4, 5, and 7).
