What started it all started so simply...

"Come on, faster!" A young boy said as he ran alongside his brother down an alleyway. Behind them was an absolute horde of police officers that were hot on their tail. Catching up fast, but fortunately, they came across a fence and they hopped over it. The... less than capable police officers had a hard time catching up. The two boys eventually breached the streets of LA as they made it into the streets. However, it was a trap.

When they made it out the police surrounded them from all angles, and the cops they were running from came from behind. All they could see were pistols and assault rifles aimed at them - even from the sky where cops were aiming weaponry at them from copters.

"Stop right there!" A cop on a speaker said, "You're surrounded, hands on your head!"

One of the boys sighed as he slowly put his hands behind his head, however, the younger of the two had other ideas. He screamed at the top of his lungs, "Go to hell!" As the ground began to shake...

... And he was promptly shot directly through the chest.

"No!" His brother shouted as he rushed over to his brother and clutched him tightly as he bled to death. "God... damn it!" He screamed as well as the ground started shaking violently as cracks formed in the ground. An Earthquake that could be felt from hundreds of miles away began as more and more destruction ripped through California.

And that was the last time LA was in one piece.

Three months later. January 17th, 2020.

"Oi!" Yoko shook her head as she stood on top of the building that overlooked several city blocks. She slid her hands into the pockets of her green jacket. It was funny that, only a few months ago, she could recognize this very street she's looking down. Unfortunately, all she could see was destruction, death, and more. This was the border of the territory that was claimed by their survivor group... the "Gal Pals" she heard that pain in the ass Stauber calls them a few times. They owned about a couple city blocks and they stayed out of the way of the bigger gang violence that was taking over LA.

Yoko shook her head as she heard some footsteps behind her and casually turned her head around to see that it was Jack Stauber himself. She craned her neck as she looked at him in all of his douchey glory. He had a cigarette between his lips, a cocky grin, and a laser rifle was thrown over his shoulder.

"Stauber," Yoko said, "What do you want?"

"Oh hey, not even a "hello"?" Jack chuckled, "I'm not even asking for a lot, just a simple "Hey Jack" or "Yo". Sheesh... I thought the Japanese were supposed to be polite."

"I have little time for your games."

"But plenty of time to stand on the edge of a building like Batman," Jack took one puff of his cigarette. "But yeah, what are you doing up here?"

"I wanted some space for myself so I can meditate."

"Oh, cool, cool, just try not to wander off by yourself, 'kay?" Jack said as he shook his head, "Because, you gotta remember LA ain't safe anymore - well, to be honest with you, it was never safe - but there are hordes of roaming lunatics running around who'd love some Japanese food right about now."

Jack laughed as Yoko narrowed her eyes at him. How could he be so blase and serious at the same time...? Yoko was about to throw him off the building.

"Okay that was uncalled for, don't go dragon on me," Jack gave her a smug smile, "But since I'm a de facto "Gal Pal", I'd hate to see something happen to ya', squirt."

"Thank you for your concern, Stauber," Yoko said, "If you don't mind, g-"

Their conversation was interrupted by a burst of gunfire coming from not too far away.

"... Speaking of lunatics." Jack said as he kicked his rocket boots together as he put on his goggles. He floated up into the air as his jet boots activated, but then he looked at Yoko, "... I'll make sure to go extra slow for you." He jets off.

Meanwhile, marching into their territory was a group of Boyz, wearing their signature smiley masks and wielding assault rifles probably stolen from the LAPD and the National Guard. They were firing wildly into the air to get everyone's attention as they suddenly came to a stop.

"Alright, listen up!" The ringleader said, "Joyboy is getting pissed off with all of you dikes chilling on the edge of our territory and not paying tribute! So give up food, ammo, water - whatever the fuck! Fuck, I wouldn't mind if one of you came up and sucked my dick! Just pay some kinda tribute to the Boyz!"

They all chuckled as they thought it was one hilarious game.

The light coming in through the curtains is painful, but not as painful as the crack of gunshots splitting the air. Frances groans as she rolls out of bed, literally, the thump making it clear to anyone listening that she's just fallen off the edge of the mattress. Dressed in the same tank and jeans she'd been wearing when she dropped the E last night, she claws her way to the window. Pulling herself upright by the windowsill, she pulls the curtains aside and hisses at the sunlight. Shit, that had not been good E.

Squinting against the sunlight, Frances can see the group of men congregated loosely in the street. The gunshots have stopped at least, but they have still left her head ringing. She rubs her palms roughly into her eyes, clearing the sleep from them. It doesn't help, her head feels like it's splitting apart, her mouth is dry and her jaw aches. Her thoughts are at least coherent though, and she reaches down to grab the pistol from the table, then slings the shotgun belt around one shoulder. It doesn't actually have shotgun shells in it instead being half-filled with various different shaped and coloured vials. She doesn't touch this stuff unless she needs it. There's a joint on the windowsill, and she tucks that behind her ear before she leaves, lighting up a normal cigarette to take the edge off.

She snags a bottle of water from the crates in the hall. Someone had had the bright idea of stockpiling them here, since most of the water was now either gone or no longer safe to drink. It doesn't seem to have much effect on the sand in her mouth, but she downs half of it anyway, wiping her lips with the back of her hand.

The sunlight is almost brighter on the roof, and she shades her face with a hand as she approaches the edge. She's tucked the pistol into the back of her pants to let her smoke and hold the water bottle at the same time. Wiping the edge of the bottle top, she holds it out towards Yoko before taking another drag on her cigarette. "These assholes again."

There's a better view from up here, and she surveys the situation. The Boyz are in the middle of the street, not the best position for them tactically, but there are a lot of them, and they're heavily armed. "Their shit ain't even that good, I'm still hanging from that E they sold me last week."

None of the Boyz' stuff had made it into her belt, she tries to keep that stuff as pure as possible, it is hard to replace, and it is a lot easier to use her powers on the pure stuff. It's getting harder resisting it though, especially with the poor quality of the highs that seem to be on the street right now. Mainly stuff that's been cut by the Boyz to increase their profits. "Shit, I should shoot them just cause of how bad that stuff is."

In-Ah stood in front of the bathroom mirror brushing her teeth to get the stale taste of alcohol out of her mouth. There weren't as many raves happening since LA went to hell, but there were a few and they were more fun now that the cops can't be called. She should be sleep, but she's too wired to shut her eyes even though she looked like she slept in her clothes from the night before. Hair messy, makeup fucked up, her neon yellow crop top and matching tight mini skirt were rumpled, and her white faux fur coat hung around her elbows. Her head hurt from too much liquor. Shit. She spit in the sink, rinsed her mouth out, then left to go to her room down the hall. Other members were doing fuck all, as long as they didn't bother her she didn't care. If they had plans, she hoped it wasn't until later. Maybe she can attempt to get some sleep.

In-Ah closed her door and was about to flop on to her old mattress when gunfire shot out down the street, then stopped in front of their base. God fucking.

"Aaahhh!" She yelled, grabbed her crowbar just encase, and stomped out the door. She's gonna kill 'em. She stormed down the hall, down the stairs, then out the door with ten of her Puppets trailed behind her. Her hair color changed from platinum blonde to neon blue and her eyes from black to vibrate green. Yoko and Jack were in front of them, she used two Puppets to push them out the way, and the other eight to grab debris. She used her Puppets to drop rocks, drywall, whatever was laying around on top of them. She handed a free Puppet her crowbar and sent it to go to town smashing faces, chests, whatever the fuck it hit. She kept one by her side.

"Yah! Fucking GameBoy, Joystick motherfucker couldn't do this shit some other time!"

Metal spikes flew through the air, whizzing out and past and around him. He felt them impact his hide, burrowing into his scales like nails through wood. But it was dulled and distant. As if it was happening but not. The air was alive with action- raging winds redirecting and misplacing most of the shrapnel. He aimed his gun, ignoring the searing in his shoulder. He felt the gunfire more than he heard it. The subtle shock of recoil from the stock against his good shoulder. Adam was providing cover for them. They could strike back safely now.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw it- the pinpoint flash followed by an arc of electricity. Impossibly fast and equally impossible to evade. It burnt through the air, unaffected by the winds and struck Adam.

Everything was dull, and muted, and gray. Except for the smell. He could smell the ozone and burning flesh clear as day. He screaming something- maw wide and bellowing. His voice had always carried, demanding attention like everything else about him, but he couldn't hear his own words. A rogue spike whizzed through the air and landed true- a direct shot to the skull. Adam crumpled, his body falling limp.

He remembered the smell of blood.

Maximilian shouted, sending his Echo forward. Cindy shouted. He shouted. He couldn't hear what was said but he could see the the pain in their's words. He knew what had happened before he even saw the body.

Up above, there was a groan, followed by the screech of shredded metal. The foundation of a building had been damaged, and was giving way- bearing down on top of him.

There was a crash, and smoke, and dust. He couldn’t see or hear anything anymore.

Henry startled awake, his enormous body jolting like a compressed spring. The reinforced bed beneath him groaned under the sudden shift in weight, followed shortly by the horrible sound of contorting metal- which only set him off further. He was in Verthaven, closed off from the rest of the world. One of his closest friends had just died in front of him. The devil rose from the abyss below the city and brought nothing but destruction and blood and death and-

He haphazardly struggled out of the bed, his enormous frame collapsing in a heap on the floor. The impact of his weight shaking the furniture and other items in the room. His tail connected with his nightstand as it swept across the floor, sending a picture frame skidding across the room. He scrambled, pushing himself up and away. Thick claws gouged ugly scars into the concrete floor, and he stumbled forward, catching himself on the room’s opposite wall. Henry pressed his hands against the cool concrete. He could shatter it. Tear through it like drywall. This had to be what was left of some collapsed building. Or damaged structure. Or something. He’d get out of here and rally with the rest of the RAVEN task force. He’d get them out of this hellhole of a city. He’d-

He rested his head against the wall and breathed. He felt his whole body flex anxiously.

Verthaven was... god, eighteen years ago now. He wasn’t in danger of being killed, at least not right now. He was okay, he was okay, he was okay. Breathe.

Henry pushed away from the wall and turned around to face his damaged bed. In the low light of the room the time displayed on the clock caught his attention. Red digital letters saying ‘3:49AM’. His day hadn’t started yet, still plenty of darkness left in the sky, but he wouldn’t be sleeping any more tonight. A glint of reflected light on broken glass on the floor tore his eyes away from the screen, and his heart dropped. The picture frame.

“No... No, no, no, no-“ He said, rushing forwards and kneeling down by the comparatively tiny picture frame, as if his sudden attentiveness would undo any damage it had sustained. He picked it up and sighed when he turned it over in his hand. The glass was shattered, but thankfully the picture itself was undamaged. It was a picture of him, Lihua, Meifeng, Sonya, Trevor, Cindy, Quentin, Cass, Reed, Adam... the Task Force, back before it all happened. "The red symbolizes the valor of the patriots who fought for our freedom," the voice of some grade school teacher whose name Henry no longer remembered had whispered from the recesses of his mind as he peered out from beneath his umbrella at the rows on rows of headstones washed grey by the rain. He'd put up a small tentative hand and asked the teacher, "I thought it was for their blood?" Well-acquainted with it, even at such a tender age.

He smoothed the picture over with the pad of his thumb, impossibly gentle for someone so big. He had no tightly knit task force anymore, and this battered and broken city was not Verthaven despite the external similarities. This was LA, and he'd be getting a new partner to watch his mountain of an ass in a few hours. Despite himself, he was looking forward to that. It was... nice to not be alone. To have someone to depend on and depend on you. A partner meant they would be essentially glued together at the hips. They'd go to the same places, take the same assignments, eat, sleep, and shit at the same time... For some it was too much, but for someone so far detached from the realm of normal it was a welcome change to not have to go through it alone.

He looked at the clock again.

3:51 AM.

He sighed again. In due time.

Esmé was engrossed in a trashy romance novel when the shots rang out. Slowly inching towards the window he mirthlessly smiled as he observed the confrontation between the garishly dressed individuals from the relative safety of the rundown room he currently occupied. Usually he wouldn’t be caught dead in a flop-house such as this, but desperate times called for desperate measures. He winced as he heard one of the drug addled derelicts that he was forced to share this shack with roll out of bed. Typical delta-human junkie. As he listened to her pass he briefly considered scoping out her room for some cocaine for himself to ease his ennui, but decided against doing so while she was still alive as not to trigger the intrinsic animalistic violence that he presumed existed inside any lower class person. He heard the clamor of others jumping to action and assumed if he lived such a miserable existence as of the lot of them, he would have a death wish as well.

He audibly sighed as he ruminated on the past few months. When, the crisis hit the first few days were a haze of drug inhalation and intimate encounters; it was like a holiday in pagan Rome for Esmé and his well to do cohorts. Despite the loss of his club in the disaster, social order hadn’t collapsed yet. Though a lot of people lowered their inhibitions, he even managed have a tryst with of all people Issac Crawford; which if you travelled in Esmé circles was a huge accomplishment because supposedly the only man in Issac’s life he was intimate with was Jesus Christ. He bit his bottom lip; those were good times indeed. It was a shame that the poors had to ruin all of fun. It was natural for the lower classes to be jealous of the opulence of the rich, but the police were supposed to maintain social order when all else failed. Esmé thought the LAPD should have used more force to ensure the groveling masses returned to work and ceased rioting. Because of their incompetence he was stuck in this decaying city until his parents found a way to get him out. He was more than willing to call this American experiment a bust and return to France; the first thing he would do when he returned to his homeland would be to go to Paris and start the arduous process of rebuilding his wardrobe.

He looked around at his numerous possessions. All things considered he managed to accumulate a sizable selection of outfits living in the hovel much to the chagrin of the others. It is like they all expected him to exert himself in gathering things for communal use. As if. Why put in effort in providing for inferiors, he is indispensable while they are not. Though he learned not to verbalize such thoughts, lest he get a tongue lashing from one of these deviants. He decided to show restraint and hold his tongue with these degenerates, until the moment a better opportunity with more civilized individuals presented itself.

Being careful to keep his head low and make as little noise as possible he managed to pick out an outfit that summed up his mood as of late. Ivory Slim-Fit Tapered Wool Suit Trousers, Wyatt Suede Chelsea Boots, a 14-Karat Gold Diamond Bracelet, and a pink Cotton-Gauze T-Shirt with the phrase “Let them Eat Cake” printed on the front in white lettering. He made his way to a bathroom and changed clothes. Despite the situation clearly requiring urgency he was taking his time not only perfecting his look, but clearly stalling so others could deal with the potentially messy situation. He thought about snooping around some of the others’ rooms again. One of these lowlifes were bound to have some cocaine hidden away or coffee. Oh god, he missed a good espresso. The group needed to acquire him an espresso machine. He looked at himself in the cracked mirror for longer than is healthy and once done admiring himself wondered if it was worth the risk to go back to his room and pick out some lipstick.

6:05 AM

Elise was awake twenty-five minutes before her alarm clock. She shifted beneath the sheets and rolled onto her back. When she opened her eyes, she was greeted by a foreign ceiling. She blinked a few times before her brain could remind her that she wasn't in her apartment anymore. Home sweet home. She thought before rolling herself out of bed.

Fifteen minutes later, Elise was stepping out of the apartment and into the streets of Harbor Gateway North. She turned right and began her morning jog. It took her down a few blocks, to the left, and towards what was now the base of operations for the Federal Agency of Metahuman Affairs. After the incident, the major outpost for FAMA in LA had been the first target of many gangs. Located on the outskirts of Downtown LA, the building had suffered quite a bit of damage. The skyscraper next door was the only one to blame, besides the two deltahumans at the center of the earthquakes. As well equipped and staffed as it had been even after the incident, it hadn't lasted long.

So now Elise found herself stationed only a five minute jog away from the new in Harbor Gateway North, along with the portion of the refugees from other regions of LA that managed to get themselves to safety. She didn't even give the building a glance as she passed by. She'd see it in a few hours. Instead, she headed North towards the 105 highway. The National Guard, with the help of FAMA and any remaining police forces, had set its sight on southern LA the moment they arrived. With it's focus on the Port of Los Angeles, the Guard soon pushed it's region of operations all of the way up to the 105, over to the border of LA County and Orange County, and followed along the 105 to Hawthorne and Manhattan Beach. With this region of LA under it's protection, the Guard had access to supply shipments coming into the Port and the Long Beach Airport. Originally it's sights were set on the LAX, but of course it too had been one of the first major connections in and out of LA to fall to the chaos.

Elise soon came to a stop on the top of the tallest hill in Athens. She looked out over the intersection of the 105 and the 110, and pulled a pair of binoculars from her jacket's pocket as she caught her breath. Looking through the instrument, she found herself peering at the largest North station of the Guard. This intersection was key to their operation, too. The 110 offered direct access to Downtown Los Angeles, with only a fifteen minute drive through hostile districts to get there. As battered as downtown LA was, it was still a valuable asset. Why, you might ask? Well, to put it simply, it was home to the epicenter of the Los Angeles Metro. If the Guard could get it's hands on it, it could travel through the ~500 square miles of LA with ease.

As great of an idea as it seemed, Elise thought that it was a lost cause. While the Guard managed to get the green line running again along with half of the blue line, to protect each line of the LA Metro would spread it's forces too thin. Even with FAMA's agents and the police, it wouldn't be enough to hold it. Why waste time focusing on the metro, when they could continue to advance north until all of LA was under it's protection? Why stop at the 105? Eli certainly didn't let it stop her. In the few assignments that Eli was given since the earthquakes, she'd made it all of the way to the looted and burnt neighborhoods of Beverly Hills and back without much interference. If the Guard really was LA's knight in shining armor, wouldn't they just keep fighting their way North?

It was too early for these kind of thoughts. Eli had other things to think about, at the moment. With a frown, she pocketed the nocs once more before turning back. This time she ran to keep herself focused on the area around her instead of in her head. There was too much to think about now. She just wanted a few minutes of peace before her troubles and LA's troubles took control of her mind. She made it back to her apartment in ten minutes, and only let her thoughts run loose while she showered off the sweat.

8:00 AM

Back outside of FAMA's new headquarters, Elise took a breath to focus herself before she made her way inside. She entered the building and stepped right into the short security screening line. Before she passed through the metal detector, Elise removed her FAMA issued handgun and placed it in the bin along with her cell. Which, surprisingly, had lasted her through the incident and over the past few months. She flashed her badge as she stepped through, and gathered her possessions before she headed towards her division's offices.

Today she would be meeting her new partner, Henry J. Olin. As her first official partner in weeks, Elise was excited to be paired with such an experienced agent. The guy had been an agent of RAVEN, had operated as a special ops agent in the infamous Operation Desert Shield, and she'd even read that he was one of the few survivors of Verthaven and emerged a decorated war hero in his file. He was quite popular among the students of the FAMA training academy, so this was a huge sign that Eli was getting somewhere in the organization. With Henry as her partner, there was no way that she'd be sent on small, serum bust errands again. Even the guy's description was enough to convince her that she was being taken more seriously. The other agents would definitely back off now that she was being partnered with a nine foot tall, deltahuman with the weight of a semi. She was basically being partnered with the Hulk, but in lizard form. Even with his massive stature, Eli had a lot of respect for him because of his record alone.

This was a huge opportunity for Elise to learn from an expert, and she was ready to advance in her training just by going on missions with him. She entered the office area with her chin held high, and headed straight for her new base of operations to meet with Henry. Well, base of operations as in, their own fairly large office with two desks and computers attached. It was a formal way to meet each other, but the space would be where Eli and maybe even Henry did most of her investigations before they would take their operations to the streets.

Without wasting any time, Eli already set herself down at her desk and began to pull up the files that interested her most. If Henry agreed with her, they could set out within the same day to get started. She kept herself busy like this until her new partner finally arrived. As soon as he approached, Elise stood to her feet and stepped towards him. She surprisingly found it easy to ignore his size, and cleared her throat so that her voice would be clear as she reached a hand out towards him.

"Agent Olin, it's very nice to meet you. I'm not sure if you're one to drop the formalities, but you can just call me Wessex." She smiled up at the giant man, and resisted the urge to word vomit every detail of his past operations and how impressed she was by him. She wasn't one to immediately admit her respect for someone, but it was incredibly tempting to do so to the infamous Dragonfly. Instead, she chose to greet him like she would with any other agent. A human approach would make it much easier to gain respect from Olin, in her opinion. The guy was probably tired of being reminded of his past. Now she just had to wait for his reaction, and hope that their partnership would blossom.

"Well, there goes talking our way out of this."

Jack says as Yoo In-Ah just went ham and used her weird puppets to attack the group. Which would have been fine and dandy... but she was attacking them all by herself. Jack shook his head as he brandished his shield and flew in.

The Boyz let out an absolute hellfire of gunfire and shots as they were assaulted by the weird ghost puppet things. Many of them were taken out (some by friendly fire), but unfortunately, the Boyz aren't super good at this aiming thing. And many of the bullets went into the surrounding area... and people.

Yoko, on the other hand, stayed on the roof, but she got down on her belly. It was the best idea she had right now. She felt a stray bullet hitting the edge of the rooftop as it fell apart. "Shit!" She hissed as her heart started racing... oh please no, not right now. She grabbed her chest as she took deep breaths. The last thing she wanted to do was change. All while she's trying to stay alive this junkie is trying to get her to hold her bottle. What was she? Some kinda servant? She narrowed her eyes at the crazy bitch - she wasn't sure if that was an American thing, but she was not interested in hearing about her drug problem.

"Oi, junkie!" Yoko shouted, "Get dow-"

Yoko let out a roar as her skin started to shift to be a greyish brown color... she punched the ground as she writhed around in pain. Her arms were extending into wings, her feet were growing claws, and a tail began to force its way from the back of her pants. Blood dripped from where the changes were forcibly made... as horns formed on her head.

"God damn it!" Yoko said in a monstrous voice as her clothes were being ripped apart.

Meanwhile, in the fight... a dark green stream of electricity came from a nearby window and went into the center of the group of the Boyz and caused an explosive growth of plant life. From flowers to trees to other things. However, vines wrapped around their legs as the "Gal Pals" were given the perfect opening to attack them.

"What the fuck?!" One of the Boyz shouted, drowned out by the bullets.

The electricity stopped coming in shortly after, as bullets came from the same window with surprising precision.

All from the help of Nakala Phillips. She sighed at Yoo In-Ah's recklessness... she knows the drill; consort with the rest of the Deltahumans to form a plan before they do anything. However, she decided to rush out there and attack them anyway. Whatever. Nakala would deal with her later, they had to end this soon as possible before anyone gets hurt. However, the Boyz were in a terrible position tactically... out in the open surrounded by places they can get shot at from but can't properly return fire to.

Which Nakala herself was taking advantage of by shooting them one by one with her pistol.

Frankie dives to the ground a moment after the Asian girl. Clearly the hangover hasn't done much for her reaction speed. She swears at the sudden cold sensation across the side of her pants. Surely she hasn't..?

She glances down, relieved to see that the wetness in her jeans is from the spilled water bottle, not any lack of self-control on her part. Her mind is torn away from that quickly however, as Yoko starts to twist, writhe and roar like an animal in pain. The cause of that pain grows swiftly more evident as her body begins to change shape. Frances backs away, scrambling awkwardly over the rough surface of the roof until her back hits the wall at the edge. She stares in panic at Yoko, then ducks, swearing loudly as a barrage of bullets tears through the parapet above her head.

Right now Yoko is going to have to look after herself. Frankie has brought her pistol, but it won't be much good from here, not with the amount of firepower the Boyz have brought with them. Instead she fumbles at the shotgun belt, eventually pulling out a small clear plastic vial filled with a white powder. As carefully as she can she taps a line out onto the back of her hand.

The ridiculousness of this flashes through her mind for a brief moment, and she has to suppress the chuckle to stop herself from blowing away a line of the purest cocaine she has. She's pretty sure everyone already thinks she's a crazy junkie, this is not going to help that situation. Too late now anyway. Lowering her head to the back of her hand, she snorts the white powder, feeling the rush almost immediately.

Shaking her head, she widens her eyes as the coke kicks her system into overdrive. It's one of the better abilities she has, at least she stays mostly in control, albeit wired as fuck on this stuff. She realises things have only gotten worse while she gets high, so she should probably start doing something useful before they start thinking that she's nothing more than a crack addled junkie. Cupping both hands, she conjures white fire into them, gathering as much as she can before turning and standing above the parapet.

Flattening her hands out she pushes the flames towards the biggest gathering she can see, a group now divided by a sudden outburst of plant life amongst them. The twin streams almost reach them. Almost.

The centre of the street goes off like a bomb, the shockwave blowing Frankie off her feet. She lands hard the air rushing out of her. Stunned, she lies there for a second before eventually managing to roll to her hands and knees. In a strange echo of earlier that morning she crawls to the wall, using it to haul herself to her feet. The centre of the street is now a blackened scorch mark, with several very dead members of the Boyz lying charred and unmoving the flames. Most of the plants are alight as well, as well as a good deal of the surrounding buildings where the fire has managed to find purchase. Frankie stares at her hands in disbelief at their apparent power. "What the fuck?"

She dives to the ground again as a bullet flies so close it could have given her a haircut. Clearly the explosion didn't get all of them.

Esmé suddenly found himself ungracefully positioned on the floor of the bathroom; his ringing ears and pounding head told him that there was some sort of explosion. Oh, God these bloodthirsty morons are going to get him killed. “Typical Americans, always looking to make every single confrontation into the Alamo. It is like they never heard of gracefully making an exit.” Esmé muttered under his breath as he shakily rose to his feet.

He felt relatively unharmed, but upon closer inspection much to his horror he chipped a nail on his left hand. “Merde Merde Merde”, he swore in anger.

Where was he going to find a skilled beauty technician in these trying times. This was truly the most grievous injury received in this conflict for sure. Savages, the lot of them. The thought of the bunch of barbarians killing each other outside over some petty disagreement that they could barely comprehend only slightly improved his ever-souring disposition. Now would certainly be an ideal time to slip away before the rival gang of brutes associated him with these delta-human dummies. He secretly stashed away a Comme des Garçons overnight bag just for occasions such as this. He swore to himself he would only take the essentials, but who was he kidding everything he owned could be considered essential. It would be a heartbreaking process to sift through his numerous possessions again and only keep what he could comfortably carry in his luxury overnight bag. Esmé vowed to burn what clothes he couldn’t carry as to protect them from the less fashionable. He was sure even God couldn’t tolerate the unfashionable and there was a special spot in damnation saved for them.

Before he could slink to his woefully dismal quarters and start the tedious process of packing. He felt a tinge of morbid curiosity coupled with the uneasy feeling regarding what the group of degenerates would do him if he was caught deserting in a time of conflict. He peeked his head out the bathroom and once assured of his safety made his way down the hall. He peered in the rooms he passed guaranteeing that they were indeed empty. He pauses when he gets to near a room that looks like it has certainly seen better days. Looked like it was torched and bullet riddled, probably one of those ingrates’ meth lab exploded. Now which of those dullards occupied this room. He crouches down outside the charred entrance to the room ready to run back to safety a moments notice.

“Umm…Mademoiselle…Uh…Plant Person…Vine Vixen…Weed Wretch…Hollyhock Harlot…no, let me guess your name is probably something pedestrian like Rose. Ha! How droll. Well, anyways regardless of your uninspiring name I am just ensuring that your dea…okay. Just checking your condition before I escap...help the others. If you’re not dying and need assistance, make some kind of noise. No, no sweetie I am not an angel just your bett…teammate. Well, ‘teammate’ probably elicits a stronger connotation then we have, I would say ‘associate’ is a better word in this case. If you think that your current situation would make me ill fellow associate, please also indicate that. Like I do not handle hideous deformities well. I mean, to be perfectly honest I normally find your fashion sense and looks to be a peg or two above absolutely revolting but compared to the rest of the reprobates that populate this establishment you are stunning. You don’t hold a candle to me, but then again who does. What I am saying darling is when you put in the effort you certainly look decent. I consider myself a bleeding heart when it comes charity cases such as yours, so if you want you could certainly hit me up for some fashion tips if you’re not dead that is. Shame, we can’t do anything about the height, though it could be a hidden strength in the right hands. Oh, listen to me prattle on. You’re probably dead though. Here I am talking to a corpse or a soon to be corpse and wasting all my good advice. C'est la vie. If it is any condolence my nail was chipped earlier, I find our two regrettable situations to be comparable. Well not really.”

His day had started early, as had his homework. Elise Wessex. Female, twenty four years old. Local to LA, lost her family in a break-in. Here profile had ink to it, more than a normal agent who had been in the game as long as she had been.

Throughout his time in FAMA, and RAVEN before it, and the Academy even further down the line he had studied the trees- all the valuable skills that he had needed to survive this long, but his experience had allowed him to see the forest. He had pulled up every file with her name in it that he had access to. And, if keyword 'Wessex' was to be assumed involved in everything recorded, she had a lot of ink in her ledger. That meant she had been involved in a great deal, and that a good amount of attention had been afforded to her. He could ascertain undercover missions since the day she started- that's where the scrubbing began. It was difficult to say exactly what she had been doing, but he could make an educated guess. She couldn't have joined FAMA prior to eighteen, so...

Henry flipped back to her age again. Twenty four, right.

So 2014, maybe 2013 depending on when her birthday was and how zealous she was. He thought back to those years- middle eastern conflict, the war on drugs... Perhaps she had participated in some way in one of those? Henry perused her history again, and seeing no vaccine or medical history suggesting she had left the country, wrote participation in the middle east out. She was... likely too young, and obviously to high value to have been placed in such a dangerous location so early on. So that left domestic affairs. Drug busts, trafficking interception, maybe delta crystal or serum trade disruption. He could work with that.

Her ability was audio-sensory in detail. She had it since she was young. Deltahuman involved double-homicide break-in. Yikes. A part of Henry was very glad he was fortunate enough to still have his whole family still with him. His mother and father were in their sixties now, enjoying their twilight years in easy peace while their children went and saved the world in their own ways. His sisters were older than him by two and three years each. One was a chiropractor with her own practice. The other had married a funeral director and had taken on half the responsibility of that family business. Both with families and responsibilities he couldn't quite identify with, which was a good thing. He had started young, and he lived a dangerous life for a long time. He had nearly died more than a few times. Being in that position was no way to have a family. All of this, ignoring the obvious tells that it wasn't in the cards

His parents love him because they're his parents and its... its their duty. But who could really like what he was? His sisters loved him, bless their hearts they did, but they didn't talk about him when they talked about the family. He wasn't invited to family gatherings like the rest of the family. He had terrified their spouses, and he had never met his nieces and nephews. And... well, he couldn't blame them for it. And and if he found someone that at least halfway tolerated him, and she sees him, he knows. She's going to stare at him, at his gargantuan frame and teeth and scales and claws and think crap. She's going to be so disappointed. She's going to wish he was someone else.

And... and he can deal with that. If he ever found someone, he can deal with her disappointment. He's used to people being uncomfortable around him, even if they never say it out loud. But he can't go looking for it. He can't keep actively trying to find someone who's going to at least initially wish he were someone else.

So he gave up. He hasn't given up, because he still vaguely hopes that he'll be with someone one day, but he gave up because he doesn't believe he'll ever find her. And he's okay with that.

Really, he is.

Henry looks at the time. 0800.

He sighs, shuts his stupid computer, tosses the papers onto his damaged bed, and gets ready for work.

She had been on her feet in an instant as soon as he had opened the door and ducked under its frame to enter the room. He could hear her heart rate from down the hall. She was a tiny thing, slightly taller than most women he had met but lithe. Suited up she probably weighed no more than a hundred a forty soaking wet. He towered over her, peering down and over his barrel chest- so wide you could probably rest a gallon jug in the divot between his collar bone and shoulder. But she did not buckle under his gaze. She wasn't scared of him. Despite himself, he smiled down at her, revealing the tips of teeth larger than her fingers. She didn't even realize it, he could see, but he saw it in the way her spine straitened at a challenge, the way she hadn't even needed to make an effort to look him directly in the eyes- to match his predatory gaze. He saw it in the total change in mannerisms the moment you put her in her element, in the time it took him to open the door to her approach.

She was no stranger to such things such as him, she who had spent a lifetime perfecting an act of meekness to conceal unexpected strength. And though it was the best he'd ever seen, hers was still an act. She was too young to been pushed to the abyss yet, and he hoped she never would.

"Agent Olin, it's very nice to meet you. I'm not sure if you're one to drop the formalities, but you can just call me Wessex."

Oh, he liked this one.

Henry laughed, deep and booming. Like a speaker at a concert the depth of the bass in his tone enough to hear and feel. He smiled at her, genuinely this time. He appreciated her effort to treat him as normal, so he might as well act the part. His eyes flashed to the papers and back to Elise and he shook his head. "Well, Agent Wessex, as much as I'd enjoy to sit down, I believe on learning on the job." he said, deciding not to comment on the fact that the seats in the room would not support his weight. He had... found that out the hard way. He turned, wheeling around on his heel and opened the door he had just come from, and held it for the younger agent.

"We can get to know each other while saving the world, yeah? Go suit up. There's people dying out there."

Mason could hear his heart pound; his chest rose and fell mechanically. Keep the feather in the center, he thought to himself as he controlled his aspirations. A gunshot rang uncomfortably nearby; he flinched and tightened his fists until his nails bit. He shrunk further away from the nearest window when he heard voices outside. They were just a bit too far for Mason to make out what they were saying, but it was safe to assume they were members of the Boyz. He’d seen them before, which was to be expected given how many areas they’ve taken over, but he’d never had to deal with them personally. And now, the chances of such an encounter had never been higher, and he was alone.

It had been about 3 weeks since he was separated from his only friend and ally in L.A., a wide-eyed, good natured young professional named Leo - a former coworker and fellow Deltahuman. The two had stayed past work hours on the day of the Incident, and were the only ones left at the office when the first earthquake had begun. Mason often thought back to that day whenever he had a moment to breathe; when Leo was out on lookout and the only thing he could hear was the faint singing of birds in the distance, he closed his eyes.

Glass had shattered in the adjacent room and its chilling clangs sent Mason into a panic right before he was able to register the floor violently shaking beneath them. His body moved on its own; he grabbed Leo and dove under the nearest desk before a shelf was about to fall on them. He shielded his friend with his body as he held his breath. The shelf struck the table as its contents - books, hardware, and framed photos of his team - spilled out and smashed onto the ground, shortly followed by the computers that sat atop their desks just moments ago, all before his eyes. Leo had been shouting but he couldn’t hear him, his mind was completely overwhelmed as the world around them fell apart. His chest tightened. His vision had begun to blur.

It was only once his friend gave him a hard smack that he was able to regain his senses, and realize that he’d been suffocating him the entire time. Leo glared at him jokingly, and almost let out a laugh, but another intense tremor - worse than the last - erupted and his expression instantly dropped. Mason stared at the floor, examining its design as a distraction as he attempted to stabilize his heart rate and clear his head. He turned to Leo after he had calmed down a bit and upon seeing his fearful eyes, his thoughts finally began to focus. Leo was a year older than him, but he looked and acted like his junior, and often reminded him of his younger siblings.

Right. Whatever happened next, he had to protect him and ensure that they’d both survive. There was never another option.

Thankfully, their office’s building had a strong foundation, so they came out unharmed. The two had stuck together since the Incident. Leo wasn’t nearly as shrewd as Mason, but he was an optimist, and very earnest, which made him the perfect companion for Mason - and his sanity. Leo would often remind Mason about how his actions saved them both on the day of the Incident, in which he’d only be able to respond with a flustered chuckle. He appreciated the sentiments, but was never fully convinced. That moment he completely dissociated weighed in his mind; if something had happened within that frame of time, he wouldn’t have been able to act. Yeah, it was pretty dumb to think this way - harmful even. He knew that much, yet the feeling was still there.

The two had been forced to face many other dangers since then. On the outset, Mason was quick to adapt to the anarchic world but, in truth, he barely held himself together. He knew it. He knew that his ability to cope with his emotions was awful. He knew he could - and should - have gone to his only friend for support, and now he was gone. With only his thoughts left to accompany him for the past few weeks, he felt as if he was about to lose his mind, but of course, he couldn’t.

If he gave up and let himself get killed, it was good as abandoning his closest friend - who could still be out there - and of course, his siblings. They’ve lost enough, and he made a promise that he’d always be there if they needed him, even if he was far away. “Heh, only if I don’t get my dumb ass killed,” he had joked to alleviate the cloying sappiness of it, but now it just sounded like a self-inflicted death flag to him.

An intense barrage of gunfire in the distance sent him back to the present. The increase of activity may have been provoked by the people the Boyz had been attacking, but now was not the time to check - not if he didn’t want to risk getting shot by a stray shell. He listened to his pulse, and allowed it to take over his thoughts as he focused on his breathing; the feather floated gently in the center of his imaginary vision. His sister, Elisa, was the one who taught him that trick; he had promised to walk her down the aisle one day. His mind began to clear and soon, all that remained was “survive for them”.

Thankfully, the Boyz seem to be focused on whoever this area belongs to. He didn’t intend to wander into another gang/group’s territory, but it seemed that he may have to deal with them as well. Just then, the door behind him gently creaked open a sliver. His heart skipped a beat.

This was probably Nakala's point exactly.

If In-Ah or whatever her name didn't rush in - and they could had come up with a plan - there wouldn't be a fireball leading straight to Nakala. She saw the white fireball in the corner of her eye and her heart raced as she desperately tried to dodge but the fireball spread in the oxygen-rich environment. She loudly shrieked as she was burned but fortunately... she was still alive. Conscious too. However, every inch of her skin burned as her hair was on fire. She, out of reflex, rolled around on the ground until all the fire on her was out. She groaned as she coughed over and over again, lying on the ground.

Then this dumbass started talking.

And talking.

And talking.

And kept fucking talking.

Nakala's fingers curled into a fist as all was going through her mind was Esme's untimely death. Which was going to be at her hands because if she was going to go down; she was going to pull this feminine jackass down to hell with her. She pushed herself up to her knees and looked at Esme... before she lunged at him with her hands outstretched to wrap her hands around his fucking neck.

She could still hear the Boyz shooting outside.

The Boyz erupted into fucking flames.

Jack had no clue what happened there! He was just hovering above them with his jet boots on and covered his face when the explosion went down... and he could only grin at the carnage! This was Jack's kinda party - better than getting bitched at by Nakala and the rest of the Gal Pals. However, the fireball didn't kill all of them. Which was perfect... as the Boyz were scrambling to get the hell out of there. While shooting as they left.

Jack aimed his laser rifle at one of them and fired a laser beam directly through his eye. He screamed as he fell to his knees, clutching his eye.

"Sorry for the impromptu laser eye surgery!" Jack shouted his one-liner, "But this place is under the protection of Jack Fucking Stauber! Make sure you tell Joyboy and his Dragons that!"

Esmé was shocked, mostly by her rather gruesome appearance rather than extent of her injuries. He thought he specifically told the Herb Hooker to verbally tell him of any disfigurements before letting him gaze upon her. He was about to chastise her about it, but that is when she lunged at him. Caught up formulating further critiques of her unsightly countenance Esmé had no time to offer up a proper defense. He was certainly surprised to say the least.

As he felt her hands wrap around his neck Esmé felt revulsion at the fact that a woman was touching him, worse yet a woman with such filthy hands. He always presumed that cleaning under one’s fingernails was a given, but the depravity was the underclass apparently knew no bounds. And the less he thought about her open wounds oozing in his general vicinity the better. Oh, god did the filthy degenerate want him intimately. He knew he was rather irresistible, but he was way out of her league. He would have let out a scream if he was not being strangled.

He attempted to struggle against her grip, but it was unsuccessful, a pathetic display really. She had him pinned down and there was little he could do. As he slowly lost the will to fight back as the oxygen depleted, he felt a righteous frustration. How dare this plebeian insect dare attack him. He was her rightful better, she should be in awe of his majesty. Well, at least he would make a beautiful corpse on such a nice day. The birds were chirping and the Sun was shining in through the hole in the wall. Sun…Light. Oh, right he had powers.

Using his little remaining strength. He focused on an area between his face and his attacker's. It was his last chance before he suffocated. Manipulating the light would temporarily blind them both and hopefully she would let go of his neck in shock. And if that failed at least he could die not seeing her haunting visage. He smirked as the light between them erupted like a silent flash bang.

A cool breeze that wafted through a bullet hole in a window had found its way to Hana’s resting place, waking her as her body shivered in response. There was a blue fleece blanket piled on the ground by the couch where Hana slept, probably having fallen there during the night. No wonder I’m so goddamn cold, Hana cursed to herself as she picked up the rag and wrapped herself in it. She sighed, placing her hands by her temples, as if massaging away pain. With her eyes closed, Hana desperately grabbed for the remnants of sleep that hadn’t quite left her body yet. There’s that feeling everyone gets - you know, when you abruptly wake up from a good dream, and you close your eyes again in hopes of resuming it, stubbornly refusing to let reality interrupt the moment. Right now, Hana was stubborn - in her dreams were visions, escapes into the past, the mundanities that Hana regretted taking for granted. She could remember what happened the day LA turned upside down - it started like any other.

~

Hana had a homemade iced americano in hand, like usual, as she read through the notifications that had piled up on her phone from the night and morning before. Her latest instagram post has amassed a measly 754 likes over two days - a stark decline from the one previous to it. She knitted her eyebrows in frustration. Her followers had now idea how long it took her to meticulously lay out her jewelry, perfume bottles, and flowers on a marble vanity to get the perfect shot. Well, whatever, Hana sighed in defeat, wiping the condensation from the iced drink on her pyjama pants before proceeding to delete the post.

It was a little past 2 PM, from what Hana could remember, when she arrived to the lecture hall with about 200 other students. The professor was setting up for class at the podium while the students engaged in mindless drivel. Then, a small tremor interrupted the atmosphere. A general air of confusion spread as the ground continued to shake, freezing everyone in the room. It felt like the calm before the storm - everyone looked at one another, in silence, save for the clattering pens and Starbucks tumblers that rolled off the many tables. By the time the quaking had grown in severity, it was already a little too late. The fluorescent lights on the ceiling began breaking off from its hinges, and streams of plaster and dust flowed freely down on the students, who frantically bolted to the exits of the auditorium.

The crowds around the sole two exits grew increasingly violent as anxiety and fear overruled rational thought. Hana trembled at the thought of getting trampled to death or being crushed by falling debris, but she mustered enough courage to push through the horde. Outside the lecture building, the hysteria was worse. People dashed left and right to find shelter from the crumbling infrastructure, though the shaking of the ground threw many off balance as they rushed about. Hana was utterly lost in the panic - she ran, but had no clear destination, only following where others seemed to be going. She remembered the pounding of her own heartbeat more vividly than whatever thoughts swam through her head during all of this, but she eventually found herself sitting with a bunch of students on a large grassy patch of campus. The next thing Hana knew, she was spending her days and nights in a makeshift relief shelter at the university.

Then, a little under three months later, Hana found herself with the GalPals (as Jack called them). She only joined the group recently, a few days ago, since the college campus began running out of supplies. Groups of college students began branching out to look for food, water, and other necessities elsewhere, and Hana had initially left with some friends too. As much as she wanted to stay with familiar faces, the chaos, strife, and destruction in the city raised tensions and distrust between gangs and groups. Some were vehemently anti-deltahuman, and had managed to get their hands on delta-point energy detectors to scan new members coming into their settlement. Hana didn’t see any other option aside from leaving her friends if she didn't want to out herself as a harbinger of carnage, or so some humans viewed it, and thus slipped away from them one night.

~

Before Hana could get up on her own, the thunderous sound of gunfire did it for her. She erupted from her seated position with a jolt, taking a second to remember to breathe. Loud shouting followed the gunfire. Hana couldn’t quite make out what they were saying, but it appeared to be coming from the north face of the building. The room she currently resided in had windows facing north, allowing her to hear much of the havoc.

“Ahh,” a nervous noise came from Hana as her body fell victim to panic and chills. She shook her hands for a quick second, as if attempting to rid her appendages of the weakness and numbness that took over them. She kept the blanket wrapped around her as she escaped the north-facing room, to search for a place to hide far away from the violence. It sounded like members of the GalPals joined in on the fight, but Hana had no intention of getting herself killed.

Hana’s hasty feet had carried her to a room as far south as she could go within the building. She didn’t think twice about entering the room, quickly bursting through and slamming the door behind her. That’s when Hana realized, much to her shock, that she wasn’t alone.

“Uh. H-hi,” Hana wrapped the blue blanket around her more tightly, hiding a part of her face behind the fabric. The man that stood in front of her was slightly intimidating. He towered over her in height, covered in tattoos and piercings. Despite his stature, he looked as shocked as Hana was, and seemed to be hiding from the gunfire as well. “Are you...part of the Gal-” Hana stopped herself from saying the awkward title, “I mean, are you with the group that lives here?”

&
Henry Olin

Henry J. Olin was standing right in front of her, and no matter how hard she tried, Elise felt small. Like she was a kid again, staring up at her father. Still, she showed no signs of feeling this way. She kept herself tall, and when he smiled with a sharp and toothy mouth, Eli didn’t even look at the large incisors. He could probably rip someone’s arm off with those. She felt his laugh deep inside of her chest, as if it shook her bones. It took up the entire room. In her peripherals she saw a few of their colleagues raise their heads and do a double take at the sight. It must have been amusing to see Elise look so small, even though her personality was bigger than all of their own combined.

She noticed him glance at the desks, but she could tell right away that he wasn’t the office type. That was good. It was a relief that her new partner wasn’t going to just sit around like some of her past babysitters had done. Henry turned and opened the door to the office, and Eli only gave the files sitting on her computer a second of thought before she metaphorically threw them out of the window.

"We can get to know each other while saving the world, yeah? Go suit up. There's people dying out there."

Eli grinned. His words brought out every ounce of energy she’d wasted within these walls when her old partners decided to sit around and research instead of getting their hands dirty. Of every time she’d been told to stand down when she could have acted and saved lives. Finally, someone who gets it!

”Yes, sir, she said with a nod, and didn’t waste a moment more as she proceeded past the giant man. ”I’ll meet you out front in ten minutes.”

It really only took her five minutes to change. The excitement of her first patrol with Agent Olin took over her actions as she quickly suited up in the staff locker room. She even allowed herself a moment to release the excitement in a muffled squeal before she took a deep breath and returned to her usual reserved mannerisms. She normally didn’t like feeling like a happy little girl, but the moments came and went and she allowed her inner child to return behind closed doors. But now wasn’t the time to act in such a way. She wanted to impress her new partner, and she needed to take this seriously. This was the moment she’d been waiting for at FAMA. If she could prove herself to Henry J. Olin, she could prove herself to the entire organization. It wasn’t so much about pride and rewards. It was more about showing that if she was given enough support, she could make a meaningful impact on the lives of deltahumans and humans alike. That was the goal here, really.

She emerged into the light of day with a determined look on her face. While most field agents preferred a heavier approach to their protection, Eli chose to wear lighter gear so that she’d have more mobility and speed in an altercation. She dressed in the usual light green cargo pants, black t-shirt, and light combat boots. On her right thigh she wore a black holster for her gun, and she wore a utility belt with a flashlight, a fixed blade combat knife, and taser gun around her waist. She also sported a midweight bulletproof vest, tied her hair up in a ponytail, and placed a plain black cap over it. The only indication that she was FAMA was the badge displayed on the left breast of her vest. Someone could easily mistake her for a policewoman, if they didn’t look close enough. While she usually preferred her undercover look, today she voted for the formal garb so that she would fit in next to her giant FAMA partner. To be honest, it was going to be hard to blend in with the crowd next to him anyways.

Henry smiled down at her as she approached- he was more heavily armed, albeit that came as a necessity for his stature. He wore a thick, class IV plated ballistic armor vest over his torso, shoulder, and thighs, with thinner class three armor plating over his legs, arms, and tail- all connected to one another by several layers of kevlar. All things considered, no scales were visible beyond the tips of his fingers, toes, tail, and head- which was mostly exposed from upper neck upwards as he had chosen to forego any more unnecessary protection. All things considered he was over-prepared, but a part of him always churned at the thought of stepping out of the safezone and into the city. Never enough to stop him, but enough to bring him back to Verthaven for just a fleeting moment. Enough to remind him of what was lost.

So he had stuck with his preparations- as a creature more suited to heavy assault, he carried a firearm that was representative of such. It was an odd weapon- specially designed for one his size. It appeared to be a scale up P90, too large for easy usage by a standard man but large enough to be comfortably used by one such as himself. Compact- or at least as compact as a gun could be for one his size, lightweight with a mostly polymer and plastic design, ambidextrous in case of emergency usage for someone else, and most importantly it fired the standard 5.56mm ammunition that was standard for most common assault rifles rather than the P90’s specially made 5.7mm. His vest contained most of the standard equipment- a heavy duty flashlight, handcuffs, three spare magazines… but no knives, batons, tasers, or mace that would normally be found in an officer’s possession.

Mostly because, well, he didn’t need them.

“You’re fast.” Henry said simply, recognizing the woman’s impressive ability to suit up. It had taken him almost a decade to master that art- and that was with ample practice. “Here, catch.” he continued, not missing a beat as he tossed her a small object- for her that was. It seemed impossibly small in his gigantic hands.

Eli picked up on the toss the moment he began to raise his arm, and effortlessly caught what could only be described as his pitch. Despite its size, with Henry’s bulk behind it, it traveled closer to the speed of a softball player’s underhand than it did an easy toss between friends. He was testing her reflexes. Eli smirked at the challenge. He had tossed her car keys. ”Where to, boss?”

”Dunno.” Henry said easily. ”I was thinking we would go through downtown.”

It was a simple phrase, but the area they were in was a low activity safe zone where order had, for the most part, been established. The way of life that had been around before the earthquake has long since disappeared, but there was safety and security in the area that had forced looting and gang activity to low or nonexistent levels. If the city had any sort of faction system, this was one of the areas where government organization was strongest.

Henry was suggesting they travel to a yellow zone, bordering red. Granted, it suited his narrative of going to help people, but it was dangerous all the same. People died there. Men, women, children, officers, FAMA agents… things happened. There was a constant, ever looming sense of danger (and in Henry’s case, dread) that loomed over those areas. Perhaps this was some other test- he had scales like kevlar so he wanted to see if she had nerves of steel. Perhaps he wanted to see that resolve. Perhaps there was no sense of danger to him- she could believe it, bullets were more like paintballs than anything else to him. He led her over to a convoy truck, large and bulky as it was. Grit and rubber and steel warped in ways far tougher than any civilian vehicle. It was a deep green, not quite urban camouflage but far from an attention grabbing color- although the size alone might turn some heads. Normally these vehicles were used to transport a task force- ten to a dozen men at a time or more. ”Have a truck driving license?” He questioned, looking down at his partner with an easy grin.

”You know, I’ve been meaning to get one of those. It’s just that every time I signed up for the classes, they were full.” She swung open the driver’s side door, and climbed up into the rig. ”It’s never stopped me before.” She gave Henry a cheeky grin. ”I doubt it’s necessary now.”

With that said, she shut the door and easily got the engine rumbling before rolling the window down. ”Hop on in, agent! Next stop: downtown LA.” With that said she faced forwards, and began to adjust the mirrors in the rig. The last person to drive it must have been at least half Henry’s size, and it gave her a moment to think about Henry’s destination.

While Eli was happy that one of her partners finally wanted to patrol downtown, Eli couldn’t help but feel a little anxious. First day on the job, and he’s taking me to the second most dangerous section of LA. He doesn’t have a death wish, does he? She pressed her lips together. No. He just wanted to get to an area where the two of them would make a difference. We certainly aren’t wasting time to get to the nitty, gritty side of this job.

Eventually, Elise felt the weight of the truck shift towards the back as Henry climbed in. She chuckled, and hoped that the rig could still do 60+ mph with such a large load inside, or that Henry was a fast runner. She lifted her right hand towards the back wall and tapped on the sliding panel that could offer Henry a view into the cabin and to the road ahead. ”All set back there?” She shifted the rig into gear, and took an easy start in case Henry was getting comfortable in the back while she waited for his response. Let’s survey the 110. I want to see the National Guard’s reaction to Henry in the back when we pull through their access gate

There was some rustling around as the giant moved, shifting the truck’s weight towards the front- and then suddenly half of Henry’s enormous head took up the empty space behind the sliding panel. He was, as funny as it was to imagine, quite excited looking- almost like a dog being taken for a car ride and excited to peak its head out the window. He pulled away and gave the woman a thumbs up, signalling that he was all set in the back.

They went north- passing through the access gate and quite literally flooring the poor sap who had to peek under the truck’s covers. The color had drained from his skin seeing a literal juggernaut sitting pretty in the back, but he had laughed it off when the other Guardsmen let him in on the joke. Apparently this wasn’t Henry’s first time scaring a few people at this particular stop and the jolly white giant had earned a bit of a reputation as a pseudo-boogieman of sorts- albeit far less nefarious. They continued onwards, periodically making a stop on the highway so Henry could either take a leak or move obstacles off of the highway to allow their particularly large convoy truck to move through with no issues. It had been quite a sight to see the lizard dig his talons into the sheet metal of a trailer and, with some struggle, single handedly pull an entire semi truck off the highway and into the median. He had been boarding the transport truck again when he froze.

”I hear gunfire.” he said. His voice was even but it carried an edge to it that she hadn’t heard before. It cut through all the background noise of the world around them- dicing straight through the churning of the diesel engine. His voice carried like he was right in her ear, despite being a dozen feet away at the tail of the truck. ”Do you hear it?”

“No. Where is it?”

”You can tap into my sensory abilities, right?” he said, ignoring her initial question. The truck shifted, as he stepped out and away from the truck and walked over to the window of her door. He was so tall that even with the additional height of the truck she couldn’t see his face. He seemed to know this, either by reading her mind or more likely through experience, and easily dropped to one knee so she could speak to his face. She had never been this close to him before- she could discern every individual black and white scale and his eyes… god, they had to be the size of baseballs. She could see his teeth now too, as he spoke. Three rows, like a shark’s. They had to be over three inches long each. This was a person once, she realized. Warped and twisted into some combination of man and beast, but he had been just a normal human. He didn’t seem to notice her momentary fascination, or if he did, he didn’t care.

”You’ll be doing it a lot. Now’s as good a time as any to get used to it.”

Elise nodded in response, and immediately set to focusing on Henry’s mind. While she’d only given using his senses to her advantage once, it was nothing like she’d expected. A second after she stared into his large eyes, she could suddenly hear within a block radius of their location. Her eyes widened, and her brain struggled for a moment to process it before it felt comfortable. Willing to go further, Eli allowed herself to latch onto every sensation in Henry’s body. ”What does it feel like to be a nine foot tall saurosapien?” You might ask? Eli could see colors that she’d never seen before- seeing heat rather than just feeling it. She could see her own red, blue, and yellow form sitting before him. She could even see her legs through the door of the truck, though it was muted by the metal. She could taste the air- the salty breeze that still drifted over LA from the Pacific. She could hear gunfire as if it was happening in the next lane over. If it was nighttime, Eli was sure that she’d be able to see everything around them even on the darkest night. It felt like she was in a world without shadows.

”This is… wow.” She grinned at him. ”You’re fantastic.”

Suddenly, the two of them could hear more bullets ricocheting off of walls. Eli’s smile faded, and she gave him a look of determination. ”I know an exit we can take up the road that will bring us right to it. Let’s go.”

Henry nodded, a wide grin creeping its way across his face. ”God, it is so nice to have someone around who can finally feel it too. Lead the way.” he said, his voice giving way to his excitement at Elise’s ability to discern the direction like he could. In his joy he raised his hand and smacked the side of the door- leaving a large, knuckle sized dent in the car’s frame. Elise just about jumped out of her skin, and Henry visibly winced at his fuckup.

”I-” he began, but stopped himself. ”Back of the truck. Right. Sorry.”

He scampered back in a flurry of scales and military grade protection gear- the only indication that he was ready being the sudden lurches of the truck as the suspension compensated for the sudden weight.

Eli just laughed it off and shook her head as she shifted the rig into gear. For the sake of safe driving, she let go of the ability to see heat. It would prove useful at night, but for now it was too much to handle. The pair continued on, both listening to the far away but seemingly close sounds of a battle between rivals. It was obvious that they were about to be in the midst of a fight between two gangs. What was odd about it was that there only seemed to be gunfire from one side, but as the two neared the point among the streets of South Park they could hear the voices from the opposite. The truck stopped a quarter of a mile away, blocked by a pileup of rusting cars. Elise immediately hopped out of the truck, and walked up to the closest car. She pulled her handgun from it’s holster and turned to look at her partner. ”Lead the way, Olin.”

In-Ah ducked behind the broken wall of the building that used to be next door when the Boyz shot off bullets. A most of her lil' sluggers were destroyed by bullets, but four, three out there and the one she kept with her. Through their eyes she saw the idiots shooting themselves up. Fucking asshole came here to cause trouble, but they weren't shit. Green lightning shot out of the window, she pulled her hand back, pulling her lil' sluggers to her just in time for plants to shoot up out of the ground and grab the Boyz. Fuck. She looked up at the window it came out of and saw Nakala. She's in deep shit when this over. She forgot, plan first, then attack. Well, can't do shit about it now. What's done is done, but it isn't all bad. She stood, ready to go out again when the street suddenly exploded.

"What the fuck was that!" She curled into a ball on the ground and used her lil' sluggers to protect her from falling debris. The explosion sounded like the day of the earthquake where a gas main exploded and took out several blocks. She got trapped under cement, but dug her way out with her lil' sluggers. She hoped that doesn't happen again. She's not claustrophobic, but if she gets buried again it might be a new phobia.

The sound of motorcycles revving away from them. She set a lil' slugger out to watch them drive away. Not a single left behind. Good. It brought back her crowbar, then she stood up, dusted off the rock and dirt. Great. Her outfit's fucked. That's fine. She has dozens more like it. She set away her lil' sluggers, then crept back the gang's building, but she didn't enter the way she came out. Instead, she want around the side to where her window was four floors up, and floated up to the second floor. too bad she couldn't go any further. She grabbed onto the sill on top of the window and stood on the lower one, then floated up another two floors to her window. She opened it and slipped inside. If she needs to avoid Nakala as long as a possible. She wasn't in the mood for another bitching and maybe she can attempt to get some sleep. She flopped onto her bed and closed her eyes. This time nothing interrupted her sleep. Good.

Cesar's bag is stuffed with as much medical equipment as he could find. Having raided at least one empty hospital, and taking as much as he could from a field hospital he was pretty much a walking pharmacy at this point. It was helpful, he could trade a lot of the pills, and had already had at least one woman hovering around as if she was going to ask for something. The dark-haired woman with needle marks on her arms hadn't, but he'd made a note to keep an eye on her in future. Definitely someone with a problem.

She's nowhere to be seen right now, presumably out and fighting the Boyz. She might look like a junkie, but she also looks like she could kick his ass in a heartbeat. Most of the women here look like they could actually. Not that it's that surprising. Cesar has never considered himself a particularly tough guy, he's short, and he's never been in a fight that he's won.

Then something explodes. Cesar's in the corridor, so he avoids the worst of it, but he still ducks instinctively. He won't be the only one, the tinkle of shattered glass fills the building, and worse, as people scream and try to move away from the violence. He can only hope, as he scrambles up the stairs, that no one on his side got hit.

That hope is immediately dashed as a flash of light grabs his attention from a door. Nakala's room, but her lightning is red, not white. Running to the door way, he skids to a stop before going through. It could be one of the Boyz' Deltas, or it could just be a blown bulb. Carefully, wary that he might be about to have his head blown off, Cesar peeks around the door.

The vicious Deltahuman he is convinced is lying in wait absolutely fails to blow his head off. Or exist. The room is scorched black, particularly around the window. His nose wrinkles, the room is filled with the scent of burnt hair and charred flesh. Not that he has time to think about that as his eyes are drawn to the two people scrabbling on the floor.

The poncy blonde French guy is clearly the worse off of the two. Cesar can't say he'd have been doing much better if Nakala had her hands around her throat. "What the fuck?"

At the same time, Nakala is still on fire. Literally. Dropping his bag Cesar rips off his hoodie, intending to use it to put out the flames and hopefully help him pull Nakala off Esmé. Right as he pushes the hoodie over her head to try and extinguish her hair his world goes white.

"Fuck!" He staggers back, hitting the doorframe hard as he blinks. He's blind. What the hell has gone in here? Leaning against the door, he's relieved as his vision slowly starts to return.

”Lead the way, Olin.”

Henry smiled, and turned to the pileup of cars, surveying the shrapnel for a moment.

"Ah, this'll do."

The giant stepped towards what appeared to be a white utility van of some sort. It was white, as they always were, and windowless as it never carried passengers. Inside it housed various pieces of electrical equipment and other supplies. Perhaps a cable company car at one point? Didn't matter. Henry dug his claws into the chassis of the vehicle, where the door met the steel support bar, and with an almighty heave, tore the vehicle open like it was a tin can- destroying the locking mechanism holding the door in place. He brought his claws down the support strut further, creating a tear wide enough for him to reach his arm in. He felt around for a solid spot and dug in once more- this time on the inside of the van's door. He stepped back and pulled out, tearing the van's door off it's sliding mechanism in one fluid motion.

"What do you think, Captain America enough?" He said hummed, pulling the makeshift shield close to his chest and striking a patriotic pose for Elise's benefit. He smiled and shook his head. "You need cover, and I'll plant this down wherever you need it."

He motioned over his shoulder with his head, and then turned to the sounds of gunfire and commotion. The walk was... relatively quick all things considered. Stealth wasn't exactly high on the priority list since, all things considered whoever was in the scuffle would be more focused on one another than they would be on any other arriving parties. As they approached the intersection where all the gunfire was coming from- Henry broke the mirror off a car with his free hand and planted his enormous frame against the wall. Around this corner they'd be facing down whatever was going on in the street. He reached out and held the mirror out, angling it in such a way that he could see at least some of the potential combatants. His eyes widened.

"Watch out!" he said, wheeling around to Elise, who was just behind him and instinctively threw the makeshift shield down and held it in front of her. Ten to a dozen motorcycles roared past them only a few second later- the roar of their engines having been masked by the shouting and gunfire. With his partner mostly defended, he brought knelt down and brought his enormous arm up in an effort to protect his face from the potential peppering of gunfire that never came. His heart was in his throat for a moment. He smelt burnt flesh and blood and he was in Verthaven again. Did one of them have abilities that went through his shield? Was Elise hurt? No, no, no. Not again. He pulled the shield away with wild eyes, tossing the car door a yard or two away effortlessly.

Elise was alright. She was alright.

"Oh thank god." Henry said, his whole body sagging some against the wall. She wasn't hurt. They had a job to do. Right. "Sorry. About that."

Henry turned to face the retreating bikers and sighed. They wouldn't catch them. Not on foot, and they'd be long gone by the time they got back to the car. Interestingly enough the smell of burnt flesh and death was still in the area. They weren't out of the woods yet. He cleared his throat and gave Elise and uneasy smile, and stomped down on the edge of the car door- flipping it up and back into his hand like it was a skateboard. "I'll head in first. If anyone's trigger happy, they'll go for me first. You should be able to maneuver around freely with them focused on me. Use my senses if you need them."

He turned, breathed, and moved- not waiting for her to protest. He didn't tell her that he always went in first because he'd much rather it be him that takes the one way trip than anyone else.

Henry surveyed the street. There were a few corpses- some had been badly burnt. One had been shot through the skull- a burn injury that was precise and focused. He hadn't seen any other injury type that even remotely resembled laser damage. It was like someone took a massive hole puncher and punched out a pocket of flesh from the man's skull. He shivered, but it was clear that for the most part the skirmish had ended with the retreat of those bikers. The sound of a struggle and a sudden flash up above and to his left caught his attention. He turned and trained his head up at the building and furrowed his brow.

"FAMA Special Agent Olin," he boomed, his powerful voice carrying and calling attention to any that may be listening. "What's going on up there?"

"Oooooooooooh boy," Jack said to himself as FAMA came rushing on the scene... which was weird because this ain't got shit to do with Deltahumans. Well, it did, but he doubted anyone here would be calling FAMA for help. Except it wasn't just any FAMA Agent, it was agent Dragonfly... one of the three Deltahumans from that shithole Megan told him never to fight. And seeing him in person he figured it wasn't that unwarranted. The fucker was big, scaley, and... mostly fucking big. Like killer croc and shit. Jack knew that his little peashooters would only piss him off and more importantly if he gets spotted its game over.

Jack is a wanted criminal, after all. If they find out he's hiding here the Gal Pals are gonna get steamrolled by FAMA... though, he wasn't that high on the criminal pecking order. Well, at the moment he wasn't and he was going to ensure he gets there by being smart and sensible. Jack cut off his jet pack and slowly crawled away - the further he gets away the better.

And of course, the Boyz were driven off before Yoko could finish her badass transformation! The dragon grunted in irritation as she was transformed into a massive dragon with shiny, golden, metal-looking scales and she had two wings with a massive span and sharp ass claws. It probably would have scared Frankie but there was another dragon here... the FAMA Agent. He was a tall ass white lizard thing and Yoko jokingly wondered if they should become a thing.

However, a flash of light caught his (and by extent Yoko's) attention and he demanded to know what was going on up there. Yoko shrugged as she had no clue... and decided to stay out of it because it'd be easier not to involve a fucking dragon. Yoko turned to Frankie and said something - but it only came out as a shriek.

Yeah, she forgot about that.

Of course Nakala's day gets even worse. Esme uses his power and a blinding flash, well, blinded her. It was worse being directly in front of it opposed to Caesar. Nakala shrieked as she stumbled backward covering her eyes and tripped over a stray piece of wood and fell directly onto her ass. Ultimately taking this as her cue to lie down and rest.
