Dean paced in the basement hallway of Bobby’s house, taking a deep breath as he pinched the bridge of his nose. This was insane. They were running out of time to kill this thing, but at the same time, they didn’t really want to. Who wanted to kill a baby? Even worse, who wanted to kill a pregnant woman?

As another scream left Amy’s mouth, from the next room, Dean flinched and closed his eyes tightly. What was he supposed to do? They had spent the last few months staying with Amy. They made sure she was safe, until they could figure out what to do. But there was nothing to do. She refused to give the baby up, no matter what they told her. Castiel refused to kill her. Bobby had all but checked out, agreeing to let them use the basement for her room, but that was about it.

He was alone, except for Sam. And now? Sam was panicking almost as bad as he was. They had managed to get Ellen to come over, if anything to assist in the birth. It was something that the three men knew absolutely zilch about. Another scream rang out, with a small rumble, this time.

“Dammit…”, Dean whispered to himself, picking up a bottle of whiskey from the staircase and kicking back a long drink. As Amy screamed again, a bright light showing through the door of the safe room, and everything went silent, before Ellen stepped out of the room, her face horrified, “Ellen?”

Ellen simply shook her head, a tear running down her cheek. She gave him a sad look, glancing down at her bloody hands briefly, and then ascended the staircase. Dean took a deep breath, his eyes wide as he realized what she was saying. They had both died. He didn’t want to check, alone.

“Sam?!”, he yelled up the staircase, staring at the cracked open door in front of him.

Esme Stirling

Esme was on the road once again, and this trip seemed longer than ever. She was hungry and exhausted from countless nights of restless sleep, but she couldn’t bring herself to stop and rest until she arrived where she needed to be. She felt like she was getting close to finding the Nephilim she was told about, but she was still skeptical about it being real. She was still on the fence about angels being truly real since she had never seen one. Everything she had read said that if a Nephilim existed, it would be a powerful being. Which in her eyes meant something dangerous that needed to be taken care of.

But how could she bring herself to kill a child? The thought of having to kill a child disturbed her greatly. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, causing her knuckles to turn white. She then sighed heavily and ran a hand through her hair. To clear her thoughts and fight sleep, she reached over and turned up the radio to a high volume. As Esme drove, she sang along with the songs she knew and drummed the beat to the songs on the steering wheel. After what felt like endless hours of driving, she finally made it to a little shabby hotel just outside of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

After getting a room and driving around to it, she grabbed her bag and a few books from the trunk, locked the car, and walked to the door of her room. She stood there for a moment before unlocking the door and making her way inside, closing and locking the door behind her. Walking to the bed, she threw her bag and books on the end of it, then headed into the bathroom to freshen up. Returning to the bed, she sat on it and pulled out her research and phone. Looking at the bedside table, she saw a piece of paper and picked it up. It was a list of places that made food deliveries to the hotel.

She then made a call and placed an order to be delivered, then poured herself over her research yet again. When it arrived, Esme was beyond starving. Walking to the door, she checked outside before opening the door. She paid for the food, shut the door, and went back to the bed to go over the research more as she ate. She was still unsure of where she needed to go from here.

Sam Winchester

Sam paced back and forth with his nose in a book, still trying to figure out something to do as time was running out. He flinched at every scream that made it up the stairs and gripped the book tightly. Every scream felt like it was ripping at his insides, making it hard to concentrate on what he was reading. He closed his eyes tight and took in a sharp breath then let it out. In frustration, Sam slammed the book down on a nearby table and hung his head. He looked up at the last scream as everything went quiet, he stared at the staircase waiting to hear something. It wasn’t long until he heard footsteps coming up the stairs followed by Dean’s voice calling his name.

He straightened himself and headed to the stairs, meeting Ellen at the top. After seeing the blood on her hands, he looked at her face, the look upon it spoke volumes. Letting her pass by, he made his way down the stairs to Dean, who was staring at the cracked open door. “Dean?” he said stopping just before the last step. He looked at Dean before looking to the cracked open door to the room that Amy was in, then back at Dean. He then realized that Dean didn’t want to go into the room alone to check on Amy and the baby. Sam descended the last steps and placed a hand on Dean’s shoulder and gave him a look that said “Let’s go and check on them.”

Dean Winchester

Dean stared petrified at Sam as he came down the stairs. Hands were shaking and he flinched as Sam touched his arm. He wasn’t honestly ready to see what was behind the door. He didn’t know how the baby would come out, or if it had survived. He didn’t want to see Amy, or what was left of her after pushing the monster out into the world. He didn’t want to go in at all.

But he nodded, and reached forward to grip the door. Reluctantly, he pulled the heavy iron door and stepped into the room. He was honestly shocked as he stepped in. There wasn’t blood on every wall, or even much on the floor. It actually took him a second to see any blood anywhere. There was no baby to be seen, but Amy was lying on the tiny bed in the center of the room. The table of medical supplies still sat beside her, and the only blood in the room was spread across a sheet laid over her, and the floor below the table.

He stomped his foot gently on the floor and closed his eyes, “Dammit…”

His mind was everywhere. Was the baby born? Maybe it was born with wings. Maybe it got up and ran away. Maybe it never came out at all, and they both died. He sighed, stepping around the bed, to stand next to the counter.

“Dammit Sammy…”, he started, bowing his head, “This wasn’t supposed to happen like this…I…”

He trailed off as his eyes, scanning to room, caught the glimpse of a figure in the corner of the room, just out of the darkness. The figure appeared to be a young woman and she was rocking. He tapped Sam’s arm to alert his attention toward the woman. He stepped forward toward the girl as a shockwave sounded within the room, catching Sam and Dean both in slow motion.

Dean attempted to pull his gun and shoot at the girl, his hands were moving too slow to make it to the gun, and they were suddenly dropped. Dean shot toward the corner, hitting the brick and chipping it. As he landed on his feet, he shuffled around, attempting to find the woman, but she was nowhere to be found.

“What the hell was that?!”

Esme Stirling

Esme was growing restless as she poured over her research. She just kept looking over the same things and feeling like she wasn’t getting anywhere. Closing the books and gathering up the papers, she put them in a pile by her bag and ran her hands through her hair. “There has to be something I’m missing.” she said, looking up at the ceiling. She let her hands fall to the bed as she looked over at the clock. She had been there for several hours doing nothing but looking over books and papers. She sighed heavily and ran her hands down her face in frustration.

Jumping up from the bed, she grabbed her stuff and headed for the door. She glanced around the room and at the bed, then opened the door and walked out. As she walked to the car, she pulled out her keys. She walked to the truck and opened it, throwing her stuff in. Esme walked to the driver's door and unlocked it, opened the door and got in. Placing the key in the ignition, she gave it a turn, and the car roared to life. She looked up at the photos on the visor for a moment that were held in place with rubber bands.

One photo was of her and her mother, the other her and her father. She then looked down and pulled out of the parking spot, and left the hotel’s parking lot. She headed into Sioux Falls to find more answers to the many questions that ran through her mind. As she drove, she turned up the radio to have some background noise and to keep her awake. As she drove, she kept an eye out for anything strange or just didn’t seem to fit in.

Sam Winchester

Sam followed behind Dean as he went into the room, equally shocked as he stepped into the room. He was half expecting to see a gory scene when he walked in, but there was hardly any blood at all. His eyes scanned the room, first landing on the table with medical supplies, then to the bed where Amy lay. His face contorted into one of grief and anger. He closed his eyes and dropped his head, then looked up when Dean stopped his foot. Sam watched Dean, seeing that his mind was going in all different directions, as was his.

He wondered where the baby was and if it had even been born. He also wondered if it had wings or not. He was about to cut Dean off, but Dean ended up trailing off and scanning the room. At the tap on his arm, he looked to where Dean alerted him to, his eyes landing on the young woman rocking in the corner. He focused on the young woman as Dean stepped towards her. A shock wave sounded before he could even react. He attempted to draw his gun, but he was moving too slow to draw it and get off a shot, unlike Dean.

When his feet hit the ground, he scanned the room. But the young woman was nowhere in sight. A look of confusion had planted itself on his features as he turned to look at Dean. He shrugged at his question. His mind raced to find an answer, his eyes going wide as the answer came to him. “You don’t think it was….” he trailed off. He almost couldn’t believe that it could be the right answer. What they saw was no baby in that corner.

Madison

Madison slowly walked down the street, flinching at every sound. She could hear the gasps from people who walked by and witnessed her appearance. The majority were concentrating on her chest, causing her to cross her arms tightly over her torso, covering her chest. She knew her name. She thought she could communicate with these people, but they were running from her, almost like they were scared of her body.

As she continued to walk, the memories of her mother, and then the two men that she was afraid she had harmed were filling her mind. Those men had tried to kill her. But…she didn’t want to hurt anyone. An unfamiliar sensation was felt under her eyes, as she thought about it, and she pulled a hand up to wipe a tear from under her eye, staring at her hand with wonder.

Dean Winchester

The same realization Sam had, suddenly struck Dean. He whipped his head toward Sam and placed both his hands on his head, his gun still perched in his right.

“That was the baby?! Cass said that if she was able to grow…she’d be unstoppable. SON OF A BITCH!”, he screamed into the echoing room, “We have to find her. Sam, we have to find her now, and at least bring her back here. She could be out there panic blasting everyone in sight…”

Without hesitation, he bolted for the door, running out the back of the house to attempt to find what could be a nuclear bomb trapped in a human body…

Esme Stirling

Esme continued to drive, her eyes scanning the buildings, sidewalks and people she saw walking along. She drove down the road for a while before something caught her attention. The people walking along the sidewalk seemed to be bothered or had their eyes drawn to something. She continued on, looking for the cause of the distraction in the area. It didn’t take long for her to find what she was looking for. Her eyes widened a bit at the sight she saw. Her eyes landed on an unclothed young woman walking along the road.

This wasn’t what she was expecting to find. Sighing, she found a place to park and killed the engine, then pulled out the key. She then reached into the back seat and grabbed the blanket she always kept there, opened the car door, then stepped out, grabbing her gun before closing the door behind her. She draped the blanket over her arm, then tucked her gun away and locked the car door, then made her way slowly to the young woman. As she closed in, she tried to make herself appear as unthreatening as possible.

She held her hands where they were both visible before speaking to the woman. “Hey, are you alright?” she asked in a warm and soft tone. As Esme waited for an answer, she looked the woman over, looking for any injuries she may have. She saw none, but noticed that she was crying and seemed unsure about the tear she had just wiped away. She looked around at those passing by and saw the looks on their faces. She then slowly took the blanket from her arm and unfolded it, holding it slightly out towards the woman.

“What do you say we cover you up so all these people will stop staring?” she asked in the same warm and soft tone. “I promise I won’t hurt you. I want to help you.” she told her, taking a small step forward. Esme gave a warm smile to the woman, her eyes on hers as she watched her. There was something different about this woman, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was.

Sam Winchester

Sam saw the realization hit Dean as he looked at him, and could see it hit him just as hard as it hit himself. His eyes never left Dean as he spoke about the woman being the baby and what Castiel had said, then nodded in agreement. He knew that getting the woman to come back with them could be hard and dangerous. He also hoped that she hadn’t panicked and hit anyone with a shock wave. As Dean bolted, he was close behind him as they ran out the back of the house. “You at least have a plan, right?” he asked him.

“You’re not just going in blindly and have cocked, are you?” When they reached the Impala, he looked over the top of it at Dean. “There’s no telling what she is capable of. Especially if she thinks she’s in danger.” he told Dean. Sam’s eyes searched Dean for what he could be thinking at that moment. He knew how Dean could rush into a situation without thinking first. That was something that they couldn’t afford this time.

Madison

Madison flinched as a strange woman approached her, telling her that she could help her. She didn’t know if she could trust this woman, since Sam and Dean tried to kill her. They were so nice to her mother, and her mother had convinced her that Dean Winchester would keep her safe. But he tried to shoot her!

She almost panicked, and attacked the woman, until she noticed how soft she spoke, like her mother. Her eyes softened from the scowl that had appeared on her face when she first approached, and she stepped closer to the woman.

“I um…I am not really alright. I am confused. I am alone.”, she spoke very clearly, but slow and calculated. She wrapped the blanket around her own shoulders, pulling it tight to her chest with a small but forced smile, “If you aren’t going to hurt me, then why do you have that gun? The last person to have a gun tried to kill me…”

As she made sure the woman knew that she could sense the gun on her body, she never let her face turn to anger or worry. Rather, her expression simply stayed calm, and her stomach rumbled loudly.

“My name is Madison…”, she introduced herself.

Dean Winchester

Dean rolled his eyes when Sam asked him if he had a plan. Of course he didn’t. He just wanted to figure out how to kill her, and go from there. He stopped before he opened the drivers side door of the Impala, staring at Sam with a furrowed brow over the roof.

“What else are we supposed to do? She’s not human, man. If the angels aren’t willing to help with her, even now, what are we supposed to do? I know what I’m going to do. I’m going to take that angel blade in the trunk…and do what I have to.”

Even as he spoke, he didn’t believe himself, that he would be able to kill an innocent girl. She was scary, but she would probably be no more of a threat, if they took her, than Cas. But that wasn’t something he could afford to test out. He was sure Bobby would agree with him, and possibly even Cas.

“I promised to keep her safe, when I thought she was going to be a baby…and I could help her, with Cas. But now? I don’t know if I can do that, Sammy.”

Esme Stirling

Esme had grown a little concerned by the woman’s scowl, but slightly relaxed when her scowl had faded. She watched as the woman stepped up to her and took the blanket from her and wrapped it around herself. She listened as the woman spoke. Esme’s features softened even more at her words. Her eyebrows went up at the mention of her gun and how the last person with a gun tried to kill her. How did she know she had one? This girl obviously wasn’t a normal human. Taking a breath, she relaxed a bit more, to show she was true to her word about not hurting her.

“I give you my word I’m not here to hurt you.” she told her. “I have the gun for protection from those that wish to harm me.” she continued. Her tone never changed. She kept it warm and friendly. She didn't want to scare this woman, especially since she could see she wasn’t normal. She noticed how the woman’s expression didn’t change, then heard her stomach growl before she introduced herself. She couldn’t help but let her smile grow. “Madison.” she repeated. “That’s a lovely name.” she smiled a bit more. “My name is Esme.”

Esme looked around them, then looked back at Madison with a smile still on her lips. “What do you say we get you some clothes and then something to eat?” she asked her. “And don’t you worry. I won’t let anyone hurt you.” All she had to do was get Madison to her car for the clothes, then from there, she could take her to get something to eat. Even if she wasn’t sure what this girl was, she couldn’t bring herself to just leave her here.

Sam Winchester

Sam watched Dean roll his eyes at his question. He should have known better than to ask if he did. He opened the passenger door, then looked over the roof of the Impala at Dean as he spoke. His brows knitted together at his words. The thought of having to kill the woman was hard to swallow. He couldn’t believe that either of them could do it. Sam balled his fists and felt almost helpless in this situation. “I know she’s not human, Dean. But can you honestly bring it upon yourself to kill an innocent girl, human or not?”

He sighed heavily and looked at the roof of the Impala as Dean continued then looked back at him. “You’re not the only one that made that promise. I made it too.” he told him. He ran a hand through his hair as he closed his eyes. “I don’t know either.” he admitted. “The important thing right now is to find her before she ends up hurting anyone. When we do, we’ll bring her back here and then try to figure something out.” he said, opening his eyes. “We can’t afford to sit on our hands on this. And I may have to be the one to approach her since you took a shot at her.” he added. Sam then got into the Impala and closed the door once his feet were in.

Madison

Madison gave a small smile at the idea of getting food, although she wasn’t entirely sure what went into food, other than what she had heard her mother speak about when describing cravings while pregnant. She nodded gently and repeated the woman’s name as well, attempting to learn as she went, “Esme. I like your name too. And I would like food. My mother liked food. She would tell Sam and Dean about her cravings, and her favorites…”

She trailed off, as saying their names upset her stomach. Crossing her arms over her chest, she fought back tears and emotions that she didn’t understand. They were supposed to protect her, not hurt her. They were supposed to keep her safe.

“Um…Esme…I think I would like those clothes, now.”, she spoke properly, stepping up beside Esme, still clutching her stomach and chest as what is best described as heartbreak continued washing over her.

Dean Winchester

Dean sighed heavily in regret for shooting at the girl, his stomach lurching at the idea that she now would see him as an attacker, rather than her savior. He didn’t respond to Sam, because he knew Sam was right. Instead, he got into the drivers seat and slammed his door shut, starting the Impala with a roar.

“You sure you want to approach her? I mean, you were with me. She might see you as just as much of a threat as me. And the only person who has been able to see her thoughts or anything is Cas.”, he started, pulling away from Bobby’s and out onto the road, “And he’s a little…predisposed at the moment. He didn’t even answer my prayer this morning, when all this started.”

As they drove into town, Dean scanned the sides of the road for anything that looked suspicious, or anyone who seemed out of place. He loosely remembered what the girl looked like, and decided to remind Sam as they were driving.

“Her hair is like…silvery, and she’s tiny.”, he spoke, before realizing his description was incredibly vague, “And she’ll probably be nude…”

Esme Stirling

As Esme watched Madison, she couldn’t help but wonder who this girl was. She seemed so childlike and she couldn’t understand why she was roaming around naked. When Madison spoke her name and said she liked it, she smiled warmly. As she spoke her smile faded a bit and her eyes lit up with surprise at the names Sam and Dean. [i]She couldn’t mean Sam and Dean Winchester, could she?[\i] she thought to herself. She was pulled from the thought when she hit with emotions she knew weren’t her own. She focused on Madison and took in her movements and posture.

Before she could ask if she was okay, Madison spoke about wanting the clothes and stepped up to her. She was glad that she could get through to the woman enough to trust her. A look of concern made its way to Esme’s face as she looked at Madison, she could feel what she was. She knew the feeling very well, heartbreak. “Alright.” she said with a small smile. “I have something in my car you can wear, it might be a little big though.” she told her. Esme slowly put an arm around Madison and led her to her car. Once there, she pulled out her keys and unlocked the door, then opened the back door.

“Sit right here. I need to get them from the trunk.” she told her with another smile. She then walked to the back of the car and opened the truck, grabbed her bag, and unzipped it. She dug through it and pulled out what she thought might fit Madison. She sighed heavily as she went through her clothes. If this woman had some sort of connection with the Winchesters, she knew she would have to get in touch with them. The only thing about it was, it had been so long since she had even talked to Dean.

Would he even answer if she were to call or text him? It looked like she would have to try while Madison got dressed. Zipping the bag back up and tossing it to the side, she gathered the clothes and shut the trunk. Esme then made her way back to Madison and held the clothes out to her. “These should work for now.” she smiled. “You can use the backseat to get dressed. I’ll shut the door to give you some privacy.”

Sam Winchester

Sam waited for Dean to get in the Impala. He sighed, knowing that his words had probably hit Dean rather hard, but it was the truth. When Dean got in and slammed the door, Sam was looking out the window. He didn’t look at him until he spoke and sighed heavily. “No, but I don’t see any other option right now.” he told him. “Especially if Cas isn’t answering prayers.” he continued. He hoped he could at least get her to talk to him, since he hadn’t brandished a weapon of any kind towards her. Yes, he was with Dean and she may see him as a threat too, but he had to at least try.

As they drove through town, he scanned the road and off to the sides for anything that didn’t seem to belong. He tried to remember what the girl looked like, but didn’t get a clear view of her before being hit with the shock wave. Almost as if Dean had read his mind, he told her what she looked like, even if it was rather vague except for the being nude bit. It would be hard to miss a nude woman walking down the street. He gave a nod and continued to look for her as they drove down the road. As far as he could tell, she had done nothing or hadn’t gone through here.

Madison

Madison followed Esme to her car, feeling grateful that the woman had found her. After what had happened to her back at the house she was born in, she didn’t know who to trust. Maybe there were a lot of people in the world who wanted to kill her. She could hurt people with her mind. Maybe she was perceived, by people who didn’t know her mother, as evil. She followed Esme’s instructions and sat carefully on the edge of the back seat, clutching the blanket a bit tighter around her body.

“Thank you.”, she whispered to Esme as she walked around to the back of the car to fetch clothes. She glanced around the car, making sure that no one was coming to kill her while she was alone. As Esme returned with the clothes, she smiled softly at her, thankful, but also not quite sure how they worked.

She stared at Esme, taking in how her clothing was worn on her own body. She then looked down at the pile of clothing as she took it, having a small hint of how to put the clothes on her body. She turned and dropped the blanket a bit, pulling the t-shirt over her head. Once she realized where the arm holes were, she slipped her arms through and pulled it down around her waist with a proud smile. She then took the underwear and the shorts, staring at them both. She gathered, from seeing Esme in her denim, that the underwear must go first. So, she leaned against the front seat, and carefully stepped into them, before unbuttoning the shorts and slipping them on the same way.

Realizing she didn’t know how to reattach the button to itself, she turned to the window, holding the belt that was added in one hand. She sighed, realizing she was going to need help, and pushed the door open.

“Um. Esme? I um…I don’t really know how this works.”, she said quietly, holding the belt up, while trying to hold the pants button together with her other hand.

Dean Winchester

Dean glanced over at Sam, noticing how quiet he was, and sighed softly, “I know you want to try and save this girl. But you need to come to grips with the fact that you might have to kill her. You realize that?”

He asked the question to calm his own nerves about his brother going near this girl after what she had done to them. Whatever that power was, it was something they had never seen from a demon or an angel. It was something new. It was something scary.

“I want you to carry an angel blade with you…”, he finished, still searching for the girl. There were no signs that she had lost her temper, or that anyone around had seen a random naked girl running around.

Esme Stirling

Esme leaned against the side of the car, wanting to stay close by the car while Madison was in the backseat getting dressed. The way she looked at her was like she was studying her, as if she was seeing how she wore her own clothes. She shook it from her mind for the moment and pulled out her phone from her pocket. She then went to her contacts list. Scrolling through, she stopped on Dean’s name and number and stared at it. She debated on whether or not she should call him. She chickened out and opted for a text instead.

Dean,
In Sioux Falls at Main Street Diner.
Have a hunch you should check out if you’re nearby.

She hit send just as Madison pushed the door open looking for help with her belt and button on the shorts. She gave a smile to Madison as she tucked her phone back into her pocket, wondering if he’d actually come or just ignore it. But deep down, she knew he wouldn’t be able to turn down a case. “I can help with that.” she said warmly as she turned to her. She almost wanted to step in and do it for her, but wasn’t sure how she would take to that. So she decided she would try to explain how to do it.

“That little button.” she said, pointing to it. “Go into that little hole on the other side, then you pull up the zipper.” she smiled. “The belt.” she said pointing at it. “Goes around like this.” she lifted her shirt just above her belt to show her. “It goes through the loops on your shorts. Then you put the end through the buckle, then this little piece through the hole to hold it in place.” As she explained, she pointed to each piece she spoke of so Madison could follow along and do the action she explained.

“Now you 're all set.” She then pulled her shirt back down and turned to the road and looked at the small building across it. “That’s where we go to get you some food.” she said, pointing at the place. “When you’re ready. I’ll lock up the car and we can walk over.”

Sam Winchester

Sam continued to look out the window, scanning everything he could see as Dean spoke. He knew that his silence would catch his attention. “Yes, I realize that.” he said with a sigh. You could hear in his voice that he knew, but still hoped he wouldn’t have to. Yes, this woman had some serious power they hadn’t seen before, and it was scary, but that didn’t mean he wanted to kill her. At the mention of carrying an angel blade, he looked over at Dean. “Having a weapon in hand got us into this mess.” he told him.

“You really think I’m going to approach her with one? For all we know, she’ll know I have it and attack before I can even use it, then she’ll just run again.” He looked back out the window. “I’m better off going to her unarmed.” He knew it was risky to go without it, but he didn’t want to risk her sending out a blast and hurting anyone that was nearby.

Madison

Madison smiled as Esme offered to help her with the pants. Esme was nice. She seemed to care about Madison. Listening intently, she managed to button the shorts and pull the zipper up, smiling proudly. She then threaded the belt through, glancing up at Esme’s pants every now and then to judge how the belt was supposed to go, finally buckling it with another proud smile.

“I did it!”, she announced happily, before sitting down and pulled the shoes Esme had provided onto her feet. She didn’t even pay attention to the fact that they magically fit, because she didn’t honestly know how shoes were supposed to fit.

She stood again and closed the door gently, joining Esme. She felt better, wearing the clothing. No one was staring at them when they walked by. No one seemed to find her a problem at all, and she was blending. She nodded at the idea of eating, stepping up close to Esme.

“I would like that.”, she whispered.

Dean Winchester

Dean shook his head at Sam, not believing what he was hearing. Sam wanted to walk into this with no weapons, and just his puppy eyes and hope. Dean sighed loudly, “I don’t think this is going to go the way you think, Sammy. I really don’t.”

As he spoke, his phone buzzed. Stopping at a stop sign, he pulled his phone from his jacket pocket and stared at it, “Esme? What the hell?”

He let the message play over in his brain before looking up at the road, seeing the street they were on. He had driven these streets enough that he knew they were close. So, he turned a sharp left and drove for a couple of blocks, slowing down only when they reached the diner. He glanced across the road from the diner, and recognized Esme’s car, causing him to turn into the diner parking lot, and park.

“Esme might have something for us. I don’t know if it’s the girl, but if there’s a chance, we should check it out, right?”, he asked Sam, putting the car in park before opening his door.

As he stepped up to the door of the diner, he peered in and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Esme…had the girl.

Esme Stirling

Esme watched Madison smiling at how she took everything in and kept glancing up to see how things went. She even gave a little laugh at her cheerful announcement of being able to do it. So childlike. she thought to herself. When Madison sat and pulled on the shoes she had given her, it surprised her to see that they somehow magically fit. She could have sworn her foot was a little bigger than hers. She shrugged it off as Madison stood and closed the car door gently and stood at her side.

She could see that Madison felt more at ease now that she was clothed. Those that passed went by without staring or saying a word, except for maybe a greeting. The wave of emotion she had felt had died off, and she could feel happiness coming off of Madison. At her whisper, Esme smiled more and put her left arm around her again to keep her close. “Okay.” she smiled. She led the way to the edge of the road and waited for a break in the cars. Once the break came, she led the way across the road and to the diner.

She opened the door and ushered Madison in, then headed over to a booth, removed her arm from around her, and sat down. As Esme waited for Madison to sit down, she grabbed a menu that rested on the wall of the booth. “Do you know what you want?” she asked warmly. She scanned the menu to see what they offered, then looked back at Madison. “I think I’m going to have a turkey burger.” she told her.

Sam Winchester

Sam didn’t respond to Dean, he knew he was right, and it caused a silent sigh to leave him. It was a risk he was willing to take to keep anyone around from getting hurt. When Dean’s phone buzzed, Sam cut his eyes over as Dean read the text he received and spoke a name. Esme? That’s the girl he used to keep in touch with, isn’t it? he thought to himself. The message seemed to have affected him in a way and it showed with the way he took the turn.

Sam watched Dean as they sped down the road only to slow down a couple of blocks later, he followed Dean’s gaze to the chevelle that was parked across from the diner. He kept quiet until Dean parked and spoke to him about Esme. “Yeah, it's the only lead we have right now.” he said before opening his own door. Sam got out and closed the door behind him, then followed Dean to the door. “Esme? That’s the girl you kept in touch with before she just dropped off, right?” he said looking into the diner.

He looked around the diner, his eyes landing on a woman that he remembered the description of vaguely. “She’s the one you met while on a case with dad, righ?” He looked over at Dean and could see that he was surprised by what he saw in the diner. Sam had to admit that he was surprised that this girl could even get close to the girl they were looking for after what had happened earlier.

Madison

Madison leaned in close to Esme as they walked, feeling safe, for once. When they stepped inside the diner, Madison’s stomach growled fiercely again. She covered her stomach with her hand, biting her lip at the smell that flooded the building. As she sat down in the booth, she looked around at all the people eating their food. The food seemed to make them happy, a sensation she really wanted to experience.

She stared across the table at Esme, shaking her head at the question of what she wanted to eat. She honestly didn’t know. She was almost embarrassed that she didn’t know what she wanted, or even really what the things on the menu really meant, but when Esme stated she was going to have a turkey burger, Madison gave a happy smile.

“I think I’ll have the turkey burger, as well.”, she muttered innocently, her smile staying on her face until she felt a familiar presence. Her face dropped slowly as Sam and Dean approached the table.

Dean Winchester

Dean nodded at Sam’s questioning, stepping into the diner with intent, “Yeah. She’s one of the only hunters I trust, but it’s been a while. So, I’m not sure what she’s doing or anything. Keep your guard up. Let me talk first…”

He knew the idea was breaking Sam’s plan of confronting the silver haired girl, but he wanted to be the first to approach Esme, after all this time. Stepping up to the table, he carefully slid himself into Esme’s side, trying not to make eye contact with the young girl across from her.

“So, you um…you were right. This is something I would be interested in…”, he started, making a small eye contact with the girl, then turning to Esme, “What um…what are you guys doing?”

Madison glared at Dean, her breathing growing a bit faster as she sat, trying to keep from exploding again, so soon. She realized that Esme had no ill will toward her, and so the contact had been innocent. But seeing Dean was incredibly traumatizing after what he had done to her, and after lying to her mother. He met her eyes briefly, raising his eyebrows at her glare.

Dean then motioned with his eyes for Sam to sit down. He desperately needed backup and the girl was scaring the crap out of him. He pointed with his eyes to the free space beside her in the booth.

“Sammy, join us. We have a lot to talk about.”

Esme could see that Madison didn’t really know what she wanted, then saw the smile come to her lips as she said what she wanted. “That’s a good choice.” she smiled. She also noticed that the more they were together, the more Madison seemed to relax. If she could spend more time with her, she felt she could get this woman to open up to her. She was still curious about this woman and wanted to learn what she could about her. She placed the menu back where she got it and looked up for a waitress, but before she could make eye contact with one, she saw Madison’s expression change.

Her smile faded and was going to ask why, but the answer soon showed itself. The boys had shown up. Esme slid over as Dean slid into the booth next to her, while keeping her eyes on Madison. “I….. Thought so.” she replied in a calm and even tone. She kept her eyes on Madison, not being able to bring herself to look at Dean just yet. She sighed softly at his next question. Was he testing the waters? “Just talking…. We were getting ready…. To order something.” As she sat there, she could feel tension in the surrounding air.

She breathed in, trying to keep herself calm. She caught Madison’s glare at Dean and noticed her breathing had gotten faster. The fear coming from those around her hit her. It felt like being hit with a tidal wave. She focused on trying to keep it under control and not get the better of her as she sat there. “Madison?” she said to get the woman's attention. “You okay?” She looked across the table at her. She used her eyes to convey to her it was going to be okay and she wouldn’t let anything happen to her.

Her eyes left Madison briefly as Sam came and sat down next to Madison, then nodded in agreement to Dean. He was right, they had plenty to talk about. She leaned back in the booth so she could take in each of their faces without looking at them directly.

Sam Winchester

Sam followed Dean inside, listening as he spoke about Esme. Though wondered why he needed to keep his guard up if he said he trusted her. At that moment, he knew his plan to confront the young woman had gone out the window. It relieved part of him to know he wasn’t going in alone. When they reached the table he hung back as Dean took a seat next to Esme and talked to her. He noticed how she didn’t make eye contact with him, and talked in the same manner as Dean.

He looked over at the young woman, catching the glare she gave Dean and her breathing. He couldn't lie to himself. She was pretty damn scary. If they didn’t play this right, it could blow up in their faces and many could get hurt, including themselves. Sam looked over at Dean as he motioned for him to sit down next to the young woman. He knew Dean needed back up. Taking a breath, he slowly let it out and slowly sat down in the booth next to the woman. When Esme spoke to the woman, he looked over at her.

He took in the name she called her and the look she gave her. It was clear in the time the woman had gotten away from them; she had formed some type of bond with Esme. Sam looked over at Dean to see if he noticed what he did.

Dean Winchester

As Esme said Madison’s name, Dean also took note of it. But Esme knowing her name caused him to narrow his eyes and turn in the booth to stare at Esme, “So you guys have been hanging out, I assume. I wonder how much she has told you.”

He broke his gaze and stared over at Madison, noticing that her glare had softened when she realized Esme knew him. He cocked his head to the side in confusion, glancing up at Sam with the same look and then back at Madison.

“Um…how did you two meet?”, he asked gently, trying to be as careful as he could.

Madison

Madison flinched when Sam sat down, once she realized who he was versus Dean. She scooted as close to the wall as she could, not wanting him to touch her. He had been there when Dean tried to kill her. He may want to kill her too. However, Esme’s voice broke her out of her panic and she met her eyes, softening her glare into a scared gaze.

She then turned to Dean and whispered, “She found me after you tried to kill me.”

She said the words so bluntly that Dean raised his eyebrows to her, surprised she could speak after only a few hours of life. He was slowly beginning to feel sorry for the kid. She probably didn’t even understand what was happening. Madison then turned her own eyes to Sam and pouted, “Are you going to kill me? I just want to eat. And…and I miss my mom. She trusted you.”

Esme watched as Madison’s glare turned to fear before she slightly cut her eyes over at Dean as he spoke, giving a nod to his assumption. “Yes.” she replied. Her eyebrow lifted at his next words, wondering what he meant by them. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked down at the table. “We….. Haven’t known each other long enough to…... Learn much about the other.” she stated. She opened her mouth to answer Dean’s question, but closed it as Madison spoke first.

She lifted her gaze to her with wide eyes at her bluntness. A pain crept up within her chest that was almost unbearable. It was from the fear radiating off those around her. It now somewhat explained why she was alone and not easily trusting, and why she questioned her gun. Esme turned her full attention to Dean when Madison spoke to Sam. “You really tried to kill her?” she asked in a low tone. Her eyes searched his face and eyes to see if it was really true. She knew he was a shoot first and ask questions later kind of guy, but could he have really tried to kill her? Why were they afraid of her? She seemed harmless.

Sam Winchester

Sam had felt Madison flinch when he sat down next to her and watched as she scooted as far as she could from him. It proved that she saw him as much of a threat as Dean. He looked at Esme then back to Madison, noting how just talking to her seemed to calm Madison, even if she looked scared. He’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, just as Dean’s did when Madison spoke so bluntly and clearly. She was only a few hours old and talking like any other would. More surprise hit Sam when she turned to him and pouted, then spoke to him.

His face contorted into grief at her words. He turned towards her and looked down at her, his words catching in his throat. “I know you miss her.” he started softly, finding his words. “I know she trusted me and I gave her my word I’d keep you safe.” He looked at her and the pout she had on her face. It was hard to believe that she was born only a few hours ago. She looked so innocent and scared sitting there next to him, he knew he couldn’t bring himself to kill her.

He didn’t have it in him to kill someone so innocent even if they weren’t human. “I plan on keeping my word.” He gave her a warm smile to show he meant what he said, hoping she’d believe him and not try to run away with Esme.

Dean Winchester

Dean was a bit disappointed by Esme’s answer of having no answers. He was slightly hopeful that she would have been able to learn a bit about Madison, aside from what they already knew. After Madison spoke, and Esme turned back to him, he stammered a bit, trying to find the words to explain to Esme what was really going on.

“I um…y-yes I might have pulled a gun on her. It’s a really long story, and I will explain, but I need her to know that we are willing…”, he turned back to Madison, “…to try and work this out.”

As Sam spoke to Madison, Dean listened to his words and his eyes narrowed as Sam said that he was going to keep her safe. He was taken aback that Sam was essentially promising her that they wouldn’t kill her. It was something he couldn’t guarantee. He kicked Sam’s shin lightly, glaring at him.

Madison

Madison was surprised when Sam spoke to her so gently. His voice was familiar, and made her heart flutter. He had been the biggest caretaker for her mother, while she was pregnant, and had spoke about how excited he was to meet her. He had even helped her mother pick out her name, named after her grandmother.

She relaxed a bit, and scooted toward him, loosening her body language as she realized she was truly safe with Sam.

“I believe you. She trusted you, and told me I could trust you.”, she spoke softly, a small smile drifting to her eyes and the corners of her mouth, “But you’re scared of me. If I hurt you, I didn’t mean to. You both just seemed so tense, and scared. I don’t want to scare anyone.”

She explained her actions to him, glancing to Esme and then back at the softness of his eyes. She was surprised that he was so kind, after his brother had tried to kill her. She did remember, however, that Dean had mentioned things, while near her mother with Castiel, about killing her or at least finding somewhere to take her that wasn’t on Earth.

Esme continued to try to read Dean’s face. It was clear he was trying to find his words. When he admitted to pulling a gun on her, she could hardly believe it. When he said he would explain, she was glad he would. She desperately needed an explanation after what she just heard. She looked back to Madison when Dean spoke to her, her mind was now spinning. She then looked at Sam as he spoke to Madison, taking in his words. She could feel how much his words had calmed Madison, much to her relief.

Though she could still feel the fear radiating off of Dean and Sam, and it kept the ache in her chest going strong. Looking back at Dean, she caught the look he gave Sam. It was as if he didn’t want Sam to tell Madison he’d keep her safe. This confused her. Esme sighed heavily, looking between the three at the table. Something told her that something bad could come out of this whole thing. That was the last thing she wanted, since bad things seemed to follow her everywhere she went.

She closed her eyes as tension was added to the mix, thoughts swirling around in her mind about what she heard and saw. She had completely missed Dean kicking Sam’s shin. She had suddenly lost her appetite, even if her growling stomach said otherwise. “I’m assuming you don’t want to explain here.” she said to Dean, her eyes remaining closed. What a way to meet up after a long period of silence. she thought to herself. She had hoped that if they ever crossed paths, it would have been on better terms. This. This was almost painful, too painful for her liking.

Sam Winchester

Sam flinched when Dean kicked his shin, he looked at him seeing his glare. He shot a look back at him that said “What? You want her to run again?” before looking back at Madison. He knew Dean would have a problem with what he told Madison, but he didn’t care. He gave a small smile as she scooted closer to him and relaxed. He had gotten through to her. As she spoke, his eyes never left her, and he nodded to her words. “After what you did back at the house, it's kind of hard not to be scared of you.” he said softly.

He looked over at Dean and Esme briefly before looking back at Madison. “We were scared. We were expecting to see a baby, not a young girl.” he explained. He looked over at Esme to see her reaction, but she didn’t seem to be listening as her eyes were closed. “I can see you don’t want to scare anyone.” he said, looking back at Madison. He sighed knowing that Dean wouldn’t like how he was talking to Madison, but he really didn’t want her to run again. As he spoke, he saw her look over at Esme before looking back at him.

It was clear the woman had made an impression on Madison and if anything were to happen she’d probably run to her for help. Sam was pretty sure that Esme would fight them to keep her safe too. She seemed to have a connection with Madison in the short time they were together.
