Billie rose from behind the counter after hearing the men had extra space in the vehicle. The stranger didn't look like military and offered to bring the museum survivors with him. The horde of zombies would be crashing at the museum's doorstep within a matter of minutes. "I'll take you up on that offer." Billie walked towards Flynn before stopping next to the vending machine. The military called for evacuation, but with everyone rushing towards the bridges, a traffic jam was sure to follow. Panic began to set in. Resources would be low. Everyone would need food.

This civilian, ex-military as he claimed, commandeered a military vehicle. Would it really matter if she broke the glass. It would take too much time to individually order each item. "Lex, I know you are here to protect the museum, but look outside. We are being asked to evacuate the city, and those things are going to be at the doorstep any moment. I don't think your boss will care about a broken vending machine." She didn't want to say the words. They should have enough time to break in the machine, bag up the food, and hop into the MRAP. Billie stared into Lex's eyes waiting for approval.

Billie had a fair point. Although the likelihood that she would be fired was too real, there were more pressing matters on hand. "I'm certain my bosses would understand," She explained, giving her approval to the woman. "But that isn't what worries me. Leaving behind priceless artifacts on my watch—they'd be free for looters to run off with. I can pay for a candy bar; I don't have the millions to replace Apex."

That being said, Lex wasn't the stupid type. Staying was likely to mean certain death. It would be only a matter of time before those things were on the museum's doorstep and trying to claw their way inside. If any of them wanted to escape with their lives, it was now or never, especially when offered a ride out of town in a well-protected MRAP.

"As much as it pains me, though," Lex continued, swallowing the uneasiness that settled within her throat. "A missing fossil or jewel sounds better than being devoured alive."

"It's the safest way out." Kali explained, in agreement with those planning on leaving with the MRAP. It might've not been the most legal choice, but putting some thick, solid steel between them and those things outside was their best option. At least the cops in the building seemed to be okay with the fact that they had commandeered a police vehicle.

Kali glanced outside the museum's front windows. The crowd outside seemed to be getting ever closer, and it would take them some time to transport their supplies from Isaac's vehicle into the MRAP. They needed to act fast while time still allowed them to make a decision.

"We'd have to leave your car behind." Kali explained, handing back her boss his keys. She had yet to hear if Isaac planned on leaving with them or not. "Are you okay with that?"

Isaac turned to look at Kali and nodded, the MRAP was way better for protection and the numbers of having a group as well would be helpful to. "Thats fine with me." Isaac said to Kali it was just a car to him anyway he did promise to find a way to get out of the city with Kali and Ilana as well to. "Do you need to get anything out of the car?" He asked her though they did need to have some supplies to get by for a little bit to, and leaving them behind wasn't a really smart idea either.

"Alright those that are leaving with us hurry up." Flynn said as he looked over towards the police officers they were getting ready to head out and defend the civilians from the zombies. "Ready whenever you all are to leave." One of the officers said as Flynn looked over at a woman June. "Are you okay ma'am?" He asked her to get her attention as the officers opened the door and quickly held the doors open for the others to get out.

Gus managed to get out of the drivers side door and opened up the backdoor for the other civilians to get inside as well to, there were a few zombies but they weren't close yet but they were slowly approaching as they shambled their way over towards the MRAP.

Yesterday:
June sat patiently through today's event. Being an independent contractor she hadn't participated in these events in years. But doing work in a regional office for an information security company that shall not be named, part of the deal in her contract in return for a reduced pay and for a longer contracting term, was too get a pass to a string of events, programs, and training courses that would in theory boost her employ-ability. In today's market, that was always a win. IN today's market of huge tech layoffs, June made herself valuable in ways that could only be matched with skills alone. Plus, she hadn't visited the big city in some time. And she was having fun in her down time. Today's training was an introduction to a program meant to counter forced entry programs. An area of expertise June did rather well in. The concept of the program was simple, creating false positives that most common breaking programs could fall for, and alert an internal system or user that someone had attempted to break into the network. In practice, it was a bloated costly program that took so much processing power that using it for anything but the most critically sensitive information. Not really good for anything that needed regular access from regular everyday staff.

So she sat, she smiled, and did her best to not jump out the nearest window from boredom. And when today's lessons were done, the food was very passable! Not great, but it was at least made the same day. June spent much of her free time that she wasn't exploring the city working from her laptop shoring up older programs she had helped write and offer support to colleagues in her field. "Three password attempts to get in? You know they say the more complicated you make your security process the less secure it is." Frankie, one of the other people in this week's seminar. Like June, sent here to learn to make his skills more valuable. Though he worked directly for his company, and June didn't. But June would be expected to implement said programs and train company staff on how to use it. She was aware of what Frankie was talking about, but two wrong attempts to get into her hardware was by design. The amount of sensitive and personal information on her device meant it needed to be difficult to get in. Two failed attempts were signs that it was working. "You know I hadn't considered that. Oh please oh wise man of computers, do show me how the work I get paid to do is done." The woman spoke with a mock smile. She and Frankie had worked a few times over the years, and it wasn't a good work trip if they weren't going at each other. She wouldn't call them friends. But she tolerated his presence. And he was good at his work. He had helped her on a few brain prodding problems that she couldn't muster on her own, and she had done the same for him. They were both respectable professionals in their fields. "You? Getting paid? You barely work. Reminds me, a few of us here are going out to a fancy Chinese restaurant tomorrow night to catch up. You coming along?" June did perk up at this, paused, pondered, and chuckled. "What? and miss this? The fruit of me people?!" She exclaimed holding up a fork full of mashed potatoes, while doing her best Irish accent. "Yeah I'll be there, text me the address when you can. I gotta wrap up a couple side projects before the week is done but I'll make it."

Last Night:
Attempts to get lucky tonight were met with being brushed off, woman who couldn't tell the difference between flirting and compliments, and guys who took way too long to realize she was just not into them. She didn't particularly like clubs. But a few drinks in from a board game shop of all places and her confidence was through the roof! Until it wasn't. She was pretty sure she was getting through to this one woman who seemed to almost grasp she was flirting with her. But either due to June's inability to flirt, or this woman's inability to register it, they simply ended up talking about fantasy topics of all things. Elves, dragons, orcs, handsome men with swords. Yeah June wasn't winning here.

The night went well otherwise until at some point June had tripped when a commotion on the other side of the club had caused a bunch of people to rush towards it, knocking June over, and giving her mild head damage. She didn't pass out and she didn't find blood later, but that could be in part the gunshot going off jolting her back to her senses despite the alcohol in her system. Standing up and rushing out the door, she would tell the officer that talked to her and other witnesses that she didn't see much. Just heard the gunshot and booked it first chance she got. It would be a great night to get to sleep and move on with her life. Though she did realize she never got the name of fantasy girl, and that fantasy girl was nowhere in sight when she fell to the floor. Probably best things didn't work out.

This morning:
Today she thanked her ancestors for her inability to never get hungover. Though her body was fighting her a bit it felt more like a mild dehydration which soon faded. Going easily 15 over the speed limit, she booked it to the train station to get to her seminar today, finishing the 40oz water bottle part way into the train ride into work. She did however try to look up what happened at the club last night, only to have the news feed flooded with so many other random stories from the area that she couldn't find much of anything. That wasn't the only weird thing. She noticed that for once, she didn't have to fight for a seat on the train. The train was by no means deserted or empty, but the number of people forced to stand was considerably less than the rest of the week so far.

The same thought came about the seminar too once it all clicked. There were less people here today than yesterday. Not by a ton, but once she knew to look for it she noticed it. Again by the fact no one had to stand today, and she counted 3 empty chairs today. She hadn't spotted any empty chairs since the event began a few days ago. She found it funny how she didn't register that information until she was hiding in a hallway in the conference center after the attackers barged into the event. And she found more attacks in the lobby. Internally, she thought this trip started as a solid 8/10, but she figured it would get a solid 2.5/10 due to today's events. "Food was nice, complimentary water bottle is good quality, but the attack by the cannibals really put a damper on things." She thought in her head letting out a soft chuckle as humor attempted to shield the most vulnerable parts of her mind as she attempted to not freak out.

Peaking her head around the corner, she could see the lobby. It was a mess. At least 3 attackers. And she saw at least that many people not moving on the ground. What she could also see, was the front door. The streets. It was right there. Freedom. Then less than a block away, the subway she took to get into work. She could make it to grand central, then take the train back to her car and flee for home. Sure, outside could be bad but at least she wouldn't be trapped in a god damn conference center! Then she saw it, one of the building security guards. One of those bodies on the floor. She could see his belt from here, and saw the gun sitting on his hip. It would barely be out of her way, and she'd have a weapon to keep herself safe. Sure, she had fired a handgun maybe once in her life. Unless an airsoft pistol counted. But the concept of a gun was the same no matter what. Chamber, safety, trigger, bullets, lethal end. It made sense! A gun, and she'd be safe.

Then she saw Frankie making a run for it from somewhere out of her sight, making a strait run for the security guard, and likely his gun too. Great minds think alike it seemed. A friend and ally was also good, and as June stood up to run over and meet him she saw the string of horrid events take place. First, Frankie slipping on a thick wet substance on the floor that she told herself was water. Watching him trip and slide right into the side of the guard on the floor. Watching the guard sit up and sink his teeth into him despite his guts torn out. Watching the other standers and another one that was laying about move over to Frankie with blind mechanical determination. June wasn't sure how long she watched, but it was long enough to know that there was nothing she could do for her colleague. When the screaming stopped something clicked in June, that she still had to leave. By sheer dumb luck, Frankie had gone for the gun first, and had created an opening for June to escape. Had she been a bit faster, or him a bit slower, their places easily could have been switch.

Now:
June had no idea how she got to the Museum. She knew she ran. She knew she didn't make it to the subway. She knew that even though outside was safer than the conference center outside wasn't safe on its own. She had no idea how far she had gone, and she wasn't even sure which museum she was in. But sometime when her head started processing what was going on she began to put things back together. Frankie was dead. Fantasy girl was probably also dead. Home was a 7 hour drive away on a good day. She was scared and her ability to problem solve was immediately shot by her inability to really process what was going on. Running on auto pilot she almost didn't register when she was spoken too. After a few seconds as the lizard portion of her brain finally released some control to the rest of her, a smile broke through when asked if she was okay. "That is a rather loaded question my guy. But I am still here, so that has to count for something yeah?" Finally her brain began to process things again outside of "Survive right now" Now, her brain was allowing her to think again. Mostly. She found herself rather shaky still. Maybe a bit jumpy too. But she was alive. "How are you?" She asked almost instinctively as if this were any other social gathering before making her way out the door to the truck.

CRASH

Billie slammed her rock hammer against the vending machine breaking inside to the food vault. Shards of glass cut her hand pretty good, but the adrenaline rush fought through the pain. She began stuffing a tote bag with the snacks inside. She went for the granola bars first before stuffing it with chips and candy. Old habits die hard. Billie began questioning her own mind state. This was reasonable right? Is it completely reasonable to steal food with the unthinkable apocalypse crawling towards them? With a tote bag filled with food, she rushed towards the MRAP.

She crawled into the armored vehicle and buckled up from instinctively. She retrieved bandages from inside her backpack to cover the wounds on her hand. The hand would heal in time. It could have been much worse. Billie extended a hand towards June, who had been rather quiet since arriving to the museum, to help her up inside. "Glad you're speaking now. Looks like you've been shell shocked. Hey, need some food? I think you'll need it." She opened up her tote bag of snacks for June to peruse.

Crash went the vending machine glass all over the museum floor. She could only hope that, like she had said earlier, her bosses were willing to forgive their actions today in light of the more dire circumstances. "Let me help," Lex spoke, the crunch of glass shattering beneath her boots as she grabbed her work pack and began to stash what she could inside beside Billie. "More hands are better than one."

Once everything had been gathered (or at least what they could possibly fit inside their pouches), Lex swung her pack behind her shoulders. She glanced at the crowd of zombies outside, and then to the MRAP. It would be only a matter of time before they neared the museum's doorstep, while a few of them began to turn their attention to the vehicle outside.

A tinge of guilt washed over her for abandoning her post, knowing her potential of further museum employment was probably over. Or maybe her bosses would decide she made the right call, prioritizing survival and human life over artifacts and treasures. Whatever would be decided, however, it didn't matter much if she was dead, ripped apart by the things outside the museum. There would be time to think on the "what ifs" later when it wasn't about to be chow time, with them as the planned course.

Hurrying herself out the doors with the rest of their group, Lex jogged over to the MRAP and boarded the vehicle.

Kali pondered Isaac's question. She, too, knew that leaving their supplies behind wasn't an ideal situation. They had taken the time to gather it all, and although it hadn't been much, what they did grab from her apartment was still valuable. The food was certainly more nutritious and fulfilling than some snacks, and the first-aid kit was equally important in the situation they were in.

"Do you think you can help us?" Kali asked, turning to one of the officers. She knew Isaac had the rifle Gladys' had given them, but Kali had no idea if he knew how to use it. With an officer, they'd have someone to cover their backs if shit hit the fan (at least, any worse than it already was considering the situation they were in). "The car is right outside the museum. There's some food, medicine. We can be in and out."

The truck was far from the most comfortable ride June had ridden in. Though it was definitely one of the biggest outside of maybe a school bus. In that regard, it made her feel safer than she had in a good while. Peeking down the road she took note of... Them. They were slow now, but it was a menacing slowness. An unstoppable force. Determined until the end. She turned to the woman who helped her into the truck and smiled warmly. A bit a mask as she tried to hide how jostled she was, but she was beginning to bounce back to some form of stability. "Shell shocked? That's not a term I've heard since middle school. But yeah it probably fits." She chuckled trying to add some humor to soften the darker moods. When offered food, she paused as if processing what was going on.

Her body had been in fight or flight mode so long, she was beginning to realize all the feelings she had been suppressing to get through the day. It was still morning when she left the conference center. Or so she thought. It seemed far later now... Just how much could happen in a day? "Now that you mention it, food sounds awesome." She looked into the bag of offered goodies until she came across some peanut butter crackers. Not only a good snack, a deceptively filling one at that. "Fucking dope." She exclaimed with a grin as she tore it open and began tearing into the crackers.

Manners snapping back to her she turned to the woman again and spoke up. "Apologies uh..." She wiped her hand off on her hoodie and reached into her cargo pants pocket, pulling out a rather large bag of gummy worms. "My name is June, it's nice to meet you. Want some gummy worms?" She offered in an attempt to socialize. Not one of June's strong suits, but she did her best to be kind where she could.

"I'm fine." Flynn said as he looked at the others as the group slowly started to all file out and made their way over towards Gus' ride as he started up the machine again. The officer looked at Kali and nodded slightly as he looked over at Isaac, they could use the supplies and whatever else that they had really. "I'll cover you." He said to Isaac as Isaac turned to Kali. "Go and get Liana over into the MRAP there i'll get the supplies that we got." Isaac said as he followed behind the officer, and joined him outside he made a beeline over towards his car and opened the back door where they had put the supplies there.

Flynn watched as the officer and Isaac made their way towards the car to get more supplies, he turned to see that there were about ten undead slowly shambling their way over. He quickly drew out his crossbow and fired off an arrow at the closest zombie, managing to kill it with ease as it hit it in the head.

Isaac managed to grab what he had and quickly followed the officer over towards the MRAP and climbed inside tossing the pack onto one of the empty seats as the two officers quickly joined them along with Flynn. "Are you okay?" Liana asked looking over at Kali once everyone was inside as Flynn was the last person to get inside. "Alright we have everyone I think." Flynn said as he made his way to the front seat with his friend.

As they drove out and away from the meuseum's parking lot one of the officers radio's started to go off. "We are locking down the island at four any officer and civilian that isn't out by then the military will blow the bridges." The radio said as the other officer acknowledged the order.

Billie paused staring at the bag of gummy worms before giving a small chuckle. Here they were trading snacks like a pair of schoolgirls on field trip while just an hour ago she saw a stranger's arm get chewed off by those cannibals. The concept of eating right now made her stomach turn, but if she didn't do something she'd scream. "Thank you, June. My name is Billie." She spoke hesitantly and did her best to maintain some level of composure. She gently reached into the bag with her uninjured hand and pulled out an orange gummy worm. "Oh and thanks for the help back there, Lex. I'll pay the fines when we're on the other side," she joked. Billie twisted the worm between her fingers. Pay the fines? What was she thinking? It felt cruel joking about fines while others laid dead on the streets. Now was not the time to think about it. Giving into the fear wouldn't serve any purpose. She tossed the gummy worm into her mouth pretending afterwards it would calm her down.

After a brief moment, Flynn and the strangers brought supplies into the MRAP. The vehicle rumbled before speeding off to the unknown. Billie leaned to the side eavesdropping on the radio. Hearing that the military would initiating a lock down and blowing up the bridges at four, she scrambled to get her phone out of her pocket. In her haste it fell down to the ground. She scooped it up to read the time. They still had an hour and a half. "Oh thank goodness, oh thank god. We still have time," she muttered to herself. Dozens of notifications flooded her phone from her family, friends, news alerts, and pointless spam alerts.

Billie sent her mother and a few friends updates on her safety and that she was leaving New York. She excluded the fact she stole from a vending machine and was passenger to a stolen military vehicle. It isn't smart to document your crimes. Right now, she depended on the driver getting them out of New York as fast as possible. Billie shoved her phone back into her pocket. She nervously glanced between the passengers, but kept most of her attention towards the radio up front or to Lex and June.

Despite it all June was at least making friends. She wasn't totally sure where she was, and she wasn't sure what exactly was happening today, and she was pretty sure the adrenaline in her system was forcing her to mask a positive attitude, but as a whole she seemed to be at least making friends. Gotta look on the bright side right? June watched intently as the first dude who checked in on her went over to help collect supplies, and thought to herself she needed to get a gun in her hands if things continued to spiral out of control the way they were. If she was able to do that she would be safe. Sure she hadn't handled a rifle in a few years, and sure she wasn't totally sure how she felt about using a gun in self defense, but she saw a dude she knew get ripped apart today. She would not allow that to happen to herself. Then, she saw the man fire the crossbow into the head of one of the... One of them. In that moment the sinking thought hit that there was a high likelihood she'd freeze up if it came to pointing a gun at one of them and pulling the trigger. She still hoped it would make her feel safe, but she wasn't totally convinced she could use one.

She remembered how Frankie used to keep a gun in his car. She wondered why she didn't do the same after all these years. Then she remembered that she is too much of an introvert to get a pistol permit in the state. There were other options, but the depressive state she was in after her father passed, it wouldn't have been good for her recovery. Nor for the many times she was pulled over for doing 98+ in a 55. Plus, in this situation a shotgun in the trunk of a car she wasn't sure how to get too without looking at a train map wouldn't help her much. She did however still want her car back.

Back to friends though, Billie had accepted the gummy worm with noticeable hesitation. And June wondered for a moment if she had an unhinged look going at the moment. It wouldn't be too out of the realm of possibility due too... well everything. June did realize she was staring at the poor woman rather intently the whole time she interacted with the gummy worm. From bag to chew June couldn't be totally sure she blinked... And now wondered if it would be weirder to break eye contact or too keep holding it. Keeping the forced smile up she quickly looked to the floor then back at Billie then around the back of the truck as a whole before speaking up. Trying to not make things weird, but knowing deep down it was far too late for that. "It's good to meet you Billie. Hopefully this whole nightmare is about over soon." She really hoped so.

When June heard the radio go off she realized she really didn't know how long she had been in auto pilot. Lizard brain survival thought process did a good job at keeping her alive, but it failed to keep track of... anything. But they had some time to get out, so that was nice. June took a moment to look at her phone and saw per usual, no notifications. Oh the life of an introvert with no family. A part of that was she didn't get notifications for anything other than texts and phone calls. Checking the corners of the internet for introverted nerds like herself she had more contact. But little direct, and less overall traffic than normal. It was... weird. Or a slow day. It was a work day after all, a lot of people in her circles still worked 9-5 jobs. Then again, for all she knows the whole world could be much worse off. OR! She is in the worst of it and had been subtly blocked from countless other accounts in an attempt to mitigate panic! But then wouldn't it be easier to block cell service? But what if that caused a panic? Then June realized she was rambling her ideas where no one could hear them, and debated bringing up some of her theories, then realized if she was wrong she'd cause a panic for nothing. So instead, she opened her mouth to speak and visibly thought better of it.

Sending off a text to a couple people back home to maybe get an update there, she waited and spoke over to Billie again. "Plus side to all of this, I don't think I'll have to pay for parking today. And, my car is outside of the heart of the city. Got something going at least?" She spoke awkwardly. With the whole random trail of thought she had going, that seemed like the most sensible thing to share. Then the gears began turning again, where would they go after this? "By chance do you know where we are going?" The random stuff she had on her weren't really suited to a survival or emergency situation. But she had nothing close by except said car, and the hotel room she was staying in outside of the city.

"No problem." Lex responded to Billie, who had now been trading snacks with another woman by the name of June.

She could notice the awkwardness that filled the back of the MRAP, evidently brought upon by the jokes that were being made. It was obvious why—people were mauled and ripped apart in the streets, and here they were sharing snacks amongst each other. Lex knew she couldn't fault June and Bille; she herself had been processing it all moments ago, her conscience worried about her job when people were dying. There was a carnal desire to hold onto some normalcy and calm, whether that be for better or worse.

"And, uh, don't worry about the fines. I think we have more important things to worry about right now."

More important things being that they were about to be trapped in New York. One of the officers' radio went off, declaring that they only had until 4 PM before the military would blow all the bridges in-and-out of Manhattan. Lifting her right arm, Lex looked at her g-shock watch that she had been wearing. It had been a little after 2 PM, which worried Lex. They had less than two hours on the clock to get out of the city, otherwise their own government would abandon them to the dead.

It felt like a slap in the face. It felt like betrayal; to be suddenly be left behind by the military designed to protect them. If they wanted to get out, they were going to need a plan of action.

"The tunnels into Jersey are probably blocked by now. And I don't think any of us want to be trapped beneath the Hudson with those things on our tail." Lex explained, before offering some suggestions as the MRAP began to drive off from the museum's parking lot. "We could head up north and cross the Washington bridge if we can, or keep going towards Yonkers. At least, that's what I think we should do, unless any of you have any better ideas in mind."

Kali nodded at Isaac. She hadn't felt entirely comfortable leaving Isaac to grab the supplies by himself, but at least the officer had agreed to act as his backup. "Let's go, Liana." She spoke to her roommate, ushering her onto the MRAP with the rest of the crowd. "They should be able to handle it. Shouldn't take them long to grab everything."

Or so she could only hope. Thankfully, the TWUNK of a crossbow bolt made it apparent that her fears were unneeded, as the crossbow-wielding man from before fired upon the approaching undead. Before long, Isaac and the officer had returned with supplies in-hand, little as they were.

"You two okay?" Kali asked Isaac and the officer as they returned to the MRAP that had been waiting on them so they could leave. Although they had made it back safe, she still felt it reasonable to ask. "I know it wasn't much, but it didn't seem wise to leave it behind."

Especially the rifle and the medicine, Kali had figured. They could probably find food at a hotdog stand or some street joint somewhere in the city, even if it was simply junk food. Might've not been the most nutritious, she knew, but it was food. On the other hand, giving up Gladys' rifle and the medicine they had gathered from Kali's apartment seemed like a fool's mistake while it was still right there in their reach. There was no telling when or if they would find either again on their way out of the city; it didn't take a genius to figure that one out.

"I'm good thanks for asking." Isaac said looking over at Kali as he sat down he made sure to secure all of the food and other supplies that they had taken in from his car. His attention turned towards the strangers that they had found themselves with, he wasn't sure who they really were but strength in numbers felt right. "I'm Isaac by the way." He said introducing himself to June and Billie as Gus continued to drive the MRAP through the bust streets of New York. "I'm Iliana." Illiana said introducing herself to the others as well to, the two police officers were sitting towards the front of the vehicle near the cab of the truck itself.

Gus turned his head to look at the group that they had saved from the meuseum one of them asking where they were actually going as he looked over at Flynn for a moment. "Once we are out of the city limits we can drop you off if you'd like, but I own a cabin out in the woods a few hours away from here y'all are welcome to stay if you want or not it's up to you." Gus said as he looked at Flynn before going back to driving as Flynn looked at the others.

"We are going to go over to the George Washington Bridge, it seems to be the best and quickest route out of the city." Flynn said as he got up and headed over into the crew cabin of the MRAP with the others. "So what do you all want to do once we get out of the city itself?" Flynn asked them all, he wanted to make sure that everyone is on the same page once they were out of the city.

The next few minutes passed with relative ease, the military had the bridge blocked and were looking and inspecting the cars when it was there turn the military guy saw that it was a military vehicle and waved them through. "Well that was certainly easy.." Gus said softly as he continued to drive further and out of the city.

Tension rose as they approached George Washington Bridge. Outside, civilians underwent full body investigations for any injuries. Those that failed were turned away at gunpoint to return to the infested city. She wondered about the ones who tried to make a run for it. With the fortifications, she doubted someone would make it. If their cover as military personal failed, would a worse fate follow? Fortunately, the military checkpoint held lax regulation for military vehicles. They managed to pass through with ease. Billie sighed in relief. She didn't fully trust Gus and Flynn yet, but she wouldn't make it out of New York without them.

After introducing herself with the others in the MRAP, she turned upfront to answer. There would be no opportunity to turn back for her SUV, so where to next? Normally, she wouldn't trust a strange man for shelter, especially in the middle of the forest, but this group proved itself so far. "Gus, was it? I vote we take you up on that offer. At least temporarily. If they are blowing up the bridges to New York, imagine how it fares elsewhere? I don't think high density areas are safe right now. We should be safer out in the woods. Away from everyone." She said. Billie turned to the other passengers waiting for their votes.

Location: On the road again!
Skills: N/A

June almost made a comment about how fines were something that are still a thing to worry about, but with the other woman's reassurance that it wasn't, June made a decision rare for herself, and shut up. No need to create problems where there weren't any while the world burned. She did make a good point on the tunnels. "Gotta agree with you about that. At least a bridge there may be ways to get off it should the roadway be jammed up, but a tunnel? Noooo thank you." She also didn't want to be trapped down there should the power go out. Yes she hated heights, but bridges were bridges. Even if they were about to be blasted to bits... She also hoped she would be able to get back to her car. Yes the ride in a military vehicle was fun and secure, but something about having her own hands behind the wheel was its own form of reassuring. Even if she was less qualified than the dude behind the wheel, something about knowing her own limits while being in control made her feel more safe. Speaking of which, she took note of the rifle that was being carried in. The idea of being armed was still crossing her mind. But she was also pretty sure that when push came to shove she would freeze up. She had only held a gun to a living thing once. A twelve year old little June going hunting with her father, and she didn't have it in her to pull the trigger then. Maybe she could picture them as the targets on the range? Maybe she could just turn off that part of her mind while defending herself? That was a big if though. Better to leave the gun in the hands of someone who could use it than ask for it herself. Plus, she doubted she would be granted such a request.

"Good to meet ya Isaac. Name's June. Private contractor and gummy worm connoisseur." She said jokingly as she attempted to break the tension with a little humor. "And a pleasure to meet you too Illiana." June listened intently as a rough plan was laid out, and honestly the woods seemed like a good idea as a whole. Assuming supplies lasted. She did have concern with trusting strangers enough to disappear with them while they waited for this whole thing to blow over. But she didn't have a ton of ideas in that regard. Or... did she. "When you say a few hours from here, by chance do you mean like Adirondacks? If so my own home is along the way a few hours north of here. Syracuse area if it's close." Though if he was going the other direction, or was going somewhere closer then it wasn't really relevant. But she had to ask. Plus, a few hours meant different things to different people. "I also took a train into the city today, my car is in a parking lot not too far if it were at possible to swing by?" She asked hopeful. If Gus wasn't willing to go out of his way to take her to the old car, then she wasn't so sure she would take the chance to get it. She spent much of the day fleeing on foot, and unless she could physically see her car, she didn't really want too risk trying to get to it. There's no telling what shape it was in if everywhere was beginning to look as bad as the city itself.

June tensed as they pulled up to the check point. This briefly reminded her about the opening act to Stephen King's The Stand and she wasn't so sure if things had gotten That bad yet. Then again, they were getting ready to cut off one of the most populated cities in the United States like a gangrene limb in a desperate attempt to save the rest of the body. As soon as they were off the bridge June sighed an audible breath not realizing she had held her breath in just a little too long waiting to see what would happen. "Car, home, then wait with a shotgun to the door while I wait for this whole thing to blow over. Though, I am flexible on those points for any better suggestions. I don't really have anything close, and the most I know of the area are the areas I work in, and the blocks around my hotel. Somewhere I don't intend on staying to wait this whole thing out." Billie seemed to be open to the idea of the isolated cabin. Brave on her for trusting strangers to disappear into a cabin in the woods. Then again, June was considering the same. She had mixed feelings about it, but she was for all intents and purposes, attached to these people. Thankfully they seemed like a decent bunch of people. Even if she was able to get to her car she doubted she would stay too far from them. And even then, she was convinced now, if she couldn't easily get to her car she wasn't branching off at all.

Alexis "Lex" Karczewski

Location: New York Streets

After some discussion, the George Washington bridge had been chosen as their escape plan. However, their rescuers had brought up a good point. Where were they going afterwards? What was their plan of action once they were out of the city? Lex hadn't known. Her home in New York was within the city limits; returning was impossible if they were planning on blowing the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan. She didn't have anyone nearby, either—her family all residing either in Chicago or across the sea in Europe.

"I'm not from here, despite appearances. All I know is the city itself." Lex responded, nodding in agreement with Billie. "So if this cabin is far enough away from Manhattan, then I think we should try it. If you don't mind, I mean."

She turned her head to listen to the other woman. For some reason, June had wanted to visit her car, but hadn't exactly said a reason as to why. Had there been some supplies in her vehicle? Or was it something else? Making too many stops could be dangerous. Aside from the threat of having their faces munched off, they were also on a time crunch to get out of the city.

"We have less than two hours to get out of the city. The streets are probably going to get worse than they already are the longer we wait." Lex explained to June. "I don't want to sound rude, but we can't afford to make too many stops if we want to get out on time."
Kali Nordstrom

Kali was thankful that Isaac was okay, as she had hoped. She had seen what happened to her co-worker, Jeff, and she didn't want to see it happen again to someone she knew.

As the vehicle made its way down the city streets, talk of a plan of action began to formulate. One spoke of a cabin. Another spoke of a car. Kali wasn't certain on what to do herself; she hadn't exactly prepared an evacuation plan in case of "flesh-eating monsters". But when faced with being stuck in a city with them versus a cabin or somewhere else with a bunch of (mostly) strangers, the latter seemed more favorable, and so she found herself in agreement with those interested in taking up Gus on his offer.

"I think we should stay at the cabin," Kali spoke up, looking around the MRAP at their motley collection of survivors. "At least until we can find out more about what's happening. We don't know what's out there yet."

She then glanced at the few bags of supplies that Isaac and the officer had brought back with them, and then to the security guard and Billie. As helpful as the supplies they had were, it wasn't going to be much in the long run. The visit to the museum had turned a three into an eleven, and even though there was strength in numbers, vending machine snacks and a few cans of foods were bound to not last long with this many people even with extreme rationing.

"Either way, we're going to need more supplies. Gummy worms can only get us so far; we probably have only a few days at most between all of us. Are there any stores on the way to your cabin? Or what about her car? We could stop and see if there is anything worthwhile."

@Lemons@Carlyle By some miracle AJ managed to get away from the bus but somehow had found herself separated from the rest of her classmates. The bus had stopped just outside of the town West Caldwell, there were quiet a lot of people still trying to get as far away from New York as possible. Cars were driving past her some passengers were seen wearing facemasks like they did back when COVID was around, there was a gas station nearby and she would see a red Honda CRV parked by a gas pump and a woman by herself filling it up with gas.

Shin-ae would find herself close by as well managing to get out of the city by bike, she would see AJ nearby and the gas station nearby as well to. There wasn't any infected nearby as far as she could see anyway aside from the few people that were driving by to get out of the city. Both AJ and Shin-ae would see a wing of F-35's flying through the air towards the direction of New York as they flew loudly through the air.

"I don't think we'll be able to find your car." Gus said looking back at June as he continued to drive they were luckily able to get through the military checkpoint just in time as he looked through the windshield seeing a wing of F-35's flying overhead towards the city that they had just left. "Theres a few gas stations in West Caldwell, then we'll drive up north to Anderson where my cabin is at it's about a two hour drive from here." Gus explained.

"I'm Flynn Price." He said looking at the group as he went into the back to join in on the conversation as he looked at the group that was there. Two cops, as well as a security guard and then the rest they had a pretty small group that would be good, though he didn't really trust the cops. Flynn took a moment to look over at Isaac seeing that he was sweating a little bit, but just assumed that it was due to the MRAP not really having a working AC unit.

The group came to a stop outside of a Shell gas station as Gus looked over at the group, there were a few people waiting for some pumps to open up. Luckily there was one that was open for a diesel pump as he drove up to it and looked at the group. "Gonna fill her up, if some of you can go out and see if we can get some supplies that would be great." Gus suggested as he climbed out of the drivers side door and headed for the pump.

Kaitlyn by some miracle got out of the city alive and in one piece, she ended up getting separated from the group she had been with Waverly and her friends had gone to look for her sister and that was the last she had seen of them. She got out of her red Honda CRV and found herself outside of a small mini mart with a gas station. She looked up in the air seeing and hearing a wing of F-35's flying through the air towards New York.

She hoped that the people who decided to stay in the city would be safe as she headed over towards the gas pump to fill up her car, she didn't really have an idea or plan to go. Luckily there weren't any other people there at the moment as she thought about going in and getting some food as well to. Kaitlyn noticed a woman on a bike as well as a girl around sixteen nearby as well to.

Losing a vehicle in this catastrophe hurt, but getting out of New York City was well worth the cost. Billie turned towards June hoping to offer some condolences. "If it helps any, my SUV is lost in the city too. While I'd love to get my car back, let's count our blessings, shall we?" She was happy to hear most of the women agreed to rendezvous in the cabin and get the hell out of dodge. With the panic, Billie felt a responsibility to the other women to keep them safe. If she was the only one, then she would have been working on her next escape plan. She did not fully trust the police officers, though Lex didn't count amongst them to her.

Not too far from her was Isaac, who'd been sweating for some time now. She couldn't blame him. With the fear and heat, she was doing the same. Though he appeared to fair worse than her. Once the stranger introduced himself as Flynn Price, she felt a little more comfortable knowing his name."Howdy, Flynn. Thank you again for getting us the hell outta there. My name is Billie." She refrained from repeating her last name with the police officers nearby. She did just vandalized the museum and stole everything from a vending machine. Not long after, Gus informed them he was filling the MRAP up with gas. This would be their last pit stop before heading to the cabin.

Billie counted on her fingers of what was needed while keeping track of what she could carry: flashlights, batteries, lighters, anti-biotics, and a twenty-four pack of water to distribute amongst the group. It would help, albeit temporarily. Billie turned towards the group in the back of the van, but mostly addressed the other women: Kali, June, and Lex. "Hey, with everything that is happening in New York, I wouldn't be surprised if we have some rabies outbreak here too. I'm pretty scared of what's going on and I don't want to see any of you get hurt. So when we get to the gas station, please stick together inside. I'll be getting some flashlights, batteries, a lighter, any medicine I can grab, and a case of water. Understood?" With the state of emergency, it is easy for people to get lost, confused, and turned around. Of the crew, Billie trusted Lex the most to keep calm under pressure.

AJ Beaufort

Location: West Caldwell Streets
Skills: N/A

AJ had ran as fast as she could; perhaps faster than ever.

She didn't know where she had been running to, having cut path across yard and street whose names she paid no heed to. Her mind had been focused elsewhere, racked by the carnal fear that now pounded in her chest. It told her to keep running. To not stop. To not look back. To ignore the screams of death behind her.

And so she did.

Without thinking, AJ had ran far, far away into West Caldwell. When she finally came to a stop, the world looked unfamiliar. Her head swiveled like a crane, desperately searching for any sign of her fellow classmates. Sophia Strickland, number 04. Ella Lowe, number 10. Not even Ashley Henson, number 07, and one of her longtime best friends.

"Ashley?" AJ called out. "Sophia? Ella?"

There was no response. Not even from the buildings AJ now stood in front of.

She had feared the worst. Tears began to well in her eyes. They had seen what had happened to Mr. Everett, and now perhaps the same had befallen her friends. AJ wanted to scream, loudly and at the top of her lungs. She wanted to curl up and give into the madness. It hadn't been fair. It hadn't been right. People didn't just... eat each other, tearing away at flesh and bone. But regardless of what she thought, AJ had seen it happen. She had seen Mr. Everett bleed out as his throat was ripped from his neck. The memory had been burned in her mind, replaying on loop. Whatever she had thought fantasy was now very much real.

AJ roughly rubbed her eyes with her arm, wiping away tears. She thought back to her parents, remembering all the times they had encouraged her when things felt terrifying. Like when she had been learning how to ride her bright pink Barbie "grown-up bike" (as she had declared it then) for the first time without training wheels. The unsteadiness had felt like she had been riding a tight rope. And yet, she had made it out alive and in one piece, her fears be damned.

Looking at her duffel bag, AJ felt an idea spark. She could make it out of this. She could make it back home to her parents, wherever they had been. They must've still been working, AJ could only figure. Working, and unaware... of all this.

Swinging the bag over her shoulder, AJ laid it on the ground. She unzipped the main pouch, and began to pull out each piece of her gear to don over her uniform. Of course, it hadn't been the proper usage of her equipment, knowing that her parents had spent a considerable chunk of change on each piece she owned, but putting as much as she could between herself and those things seemed like a swell idea. If any of it broke, she could only hope her parents understood.

Pulling her helmet over her head, AJ grabbed her duffel bag and stick. She gripped the goalie stick tight in her hands, pressing it against the suede material her gloves were made of. If any of those freaks were bound to come after her, she would take them down like it was the final moments before a buzzer beater.

Or so she tried to make herself believe.

"Alright, AJ," She spoke, hyping herself up as best as she could in the situation. It wasn't likely to help, given the circumstances, but she knew it was at least worth trying. "You've got this. Like dad said. Anything's possible if you put your mind to it."

With her pitiful attempt at encouragement, AJ carefully set out. She wasn't certain what was the proper route to take, but the sound of cars passing by was enough for AJ to decide where to go. Her eyes scanned the road like radar as she walked down the street, carefully looking out for anyone that might've looked even the slightest bit suspicious.

In this case, however, suspicious had meant anyone right now. Anyone, including a bike-riding Korean woman that was quickly headed straight first in her direction.

"Stay back!" AJ demanded, taking a defensive stance as newfound adrenaline rushed freely into her veins. She had yet to register the woman's bike, having instead been spooked by the sudden appearance of the woman coming out from seemingly nowhere. In one fell swoop, she swung the crosse forward as she came within range. "I said back!"

Relieved to be out of the city, Lex let herself relax for a moment. There was no cannibals ready to eat her brains in New Jersey, at least as far as she had seen. However, she hadn't known if that was a good thing or not. The military was said to have been preparing to blow the bridges to Manhattan, but what if it had already spread past the city? It had been a point Billie had brought up; that the "rabies" could already be here. Lex could only hope that the military could properly contain it, but a piece of her feared otherwise.

"You've got it, boss." Lex responded, attempting to brush away her personal worries. Another woman, Kali she had come to known, mentioned what she'd would be looking for—water. A fair idea, given that Lex hadn't seen much water bottles between them all. "I'll see if they have any toilet paper. I don't know about you all, but if I can avoid having to wipe my butt with leaves, I'm going to take it."

Standing up from her seat, Lex began to follow those who were disembarking out of the MRAP. As foot hit station concrete, the sudden sound of fighter jets buzzing the I-95 snatched her attention upwards to the sky.

"Looks like we got out at the right time," Lex spoke up, noting the fighter wing roaring above the town. Everyone knew what was coming, and so she chose to approach the sight with a light-hearted response to break any tension that might have been lingering in the air. "Can't say the same for everyone, though. I don't want to think about how many people they're leaving behind."

The grand escape had gone well, and they had safely evacuated Manhattan and into the border of New Jersey with the aid of strangers.

Kali watched as the MRAP they escaped with drove up to an open pump, having pulled into the local Shell gas station. One of them—Gus, she had come to know—mentioned he was planning on filling the vehicle up with fuel, and asked if they could go gather some more supplies before they left. Standing up from her seat, Kali went to join them, feeling like an extra pair of hands (and some cash, though she doubted that mattered given their already stolen vehicle and looted snacks) could help in the long run.

"I'll help with the water," Kali noted to Billie, who had been expressing concern as they began to leave the MRAP. "As much water as we can carry would be best in case we have to boil later on."

As Kali began to walk down the aisle, however, she noticed Isaac, who had been sweating bullets as if he had come down with a sudden fever or the like. As he was frequently in the kitchen, Kali was used to Isaac fighting the heat, and she'd often offer him a glass of water or towel. It was something she wouldn't have thought much about had it been any other day. Given the day's circumstances, though, she thought to check on him, just in-case.

"Isaac," Kali asked, moving to sit near him. "Are you alright? Do you want me to fetch you a Gatorade or something from the coolers?"

Shin-ae Yun

Location: West Caldwell Streets
Skills: N/A

Many things could be said about Shin-ae Yun. But 'athletic' was not one of them.

Her breaths came fast, hard,, and unsteady, rattling in and out with force enough to shred her throat raw and leave a strange taste in her mouth. The adrenaline was faltering now that there wasn't hell breaking loose all around her. So she was really starting to feel her thighs burning. Every time she thought to stop, to take a rest by the side of the road and lie down for a second, the memory of Meredith only barely held back from ripping her throat out would replay in her head. The memory of frantically weaving along the clogged streets and sidewalks as military vehicles blockaded Manhattan. Her hands would start to feel cold and clammy, icy sweat drenching the already-sodden handlebars. Those people...things could be anywhere.

So where adrenaline faltered, Shin-ae's terror kept her pedaling.

The violin case was something that she'd long gotten used to carrying by now; all the way from elementary school onward, for hours and hours, until if she grabbed only its handle and nothing else with eyes closed, she could still tell precisely what it was by how intimately familiar the weight was; it was second nature by then. But she generally didn't carry it on a bike through hilly terrain while physically and mentally exhausted; so its weight was starting to pull her down as well.

After a hill that felt like it had gone on forever, she finally crested it and spared a single harried sigh at the knowledge that she could go downhill for a moment and could rest her screaming legs. So relieved was she at the sudden easy speed that she didn't need to work for that for just a split second she wasn't paying full attentio, to her surroundings.

At which point someone dressed in some kind of sports padding came out of seemingly nowhere, wound up a crosse, and swung it in a broad, sweeping arc.

"Wait, wait," she tried to shout, but her throat was raw enough that speech had deserted her, regressing to an indistinct croaking noise that did little to stop the crosse from clotheslining her. What little breath she had left her in an explosive oof! and her bike carried on riding itself for a few more feet before falling to the pavement with a deafening crash at about the same time as she did. She clutched her torso where the cross had made contact as she curled in on herself. It didn't feel like anything was broken, she wasn't severely injured, and her heavy coat had protected her from the worst of the impact. But the knee of her sweatpants was shredded, and she could feel blood running from the new abrasion. She couldn't see it just then, but she hoped it wasn't...too bad.

For a long moment, all that came out of her was a long, thin groan. Then finally:

"Whyyyyyyy..."

June Fowler

Location: Gas Station
Skills: N/A

It appeared June's car was a loss. Between several of the group wishing to exit the area surrounding the city as fast as possible, and the jets flying overhead, the pet project she worked on with her dad would find its resting place in some parking lot in the outskirts of the city. Shame really. And from the looks of it, she wouldn't get a good chance to go home for a while either. In that moment she understood a bit more why people kept physical photos of their loved ones in their wallet. "All things considering we're still pretty lucky. Though I can see the lawsuit ads coming in the future. "Have you or a loved one lost your paid off vehicle and or loved ones when the government closed the city! Well call us, Tim Dyson at 1-800, 123 go fuck yourself to join the suit!"" June joked in her best announcer voice. "Followed by an ad for slightly used cars, no questions asked that nostalgically may even look like the cars you lost in NYC! Sold by a dude who looks a ton like the dude in the lawsuit ass, just with a fancy handlebar mustache! "Hello! I am Jim Dyson from Jim Dyson's used nostalgic lost New York cars. You can't put a price on trauma!"" June joked repeating the announcer voice a huge smile on her face as she joked. She was going to miss the car though. She wasn't even sure she had a photo of her dad on her phone, she knew she didn't of her mom. There were several at home. 6 hours drive in the best of conditions. Without the deaths, the blockades, the traffic jams, the collapse of society. But alas, June's inability to properly cope made it easy to put up the mask right now.

Pulling into the gas station Billie came up with a reasonable plan. Stay close in case more hostiles came in and tried to kill them. In her coping state, she almost spoke up about how instead of just going for the most unlucky sucker who happened to stay a little too far, now they'll go for the slowest! Then she realized she may be masking her fears a little too much, and saying something like that out loud would probably not go down too well. Humor as a shield could only go so far. When Lex brought up toilet paper it reminded June that they were going to be in a likely cramped cabin together for god knows how long. "I'll find us some snacks and coffee. Maybe some tooth paste and pads and all that other fun stuff." She said trying to sound serious. Not that June was ever good at sounding serious. But she did her best. Water was also a good point, but June's thoughts trailed off after she got out of the truck.

Shopping was thankfully a lot less eventful. For better and worse. The first stop? Filling her shopping basket full of as many gummy worms as she could get her hands on. Less than she expected to be left, but! More than enough to satisfy her needs for a little while. Even if she decided to share with the others. She then thought about her tablet, laptop, and phone. Sure, she had a couple battery packs in her bag, one of which could even keep her laptop going for a little while. But not forever. And she wasn't sure how often she would get a chance to charge her gear or batteries. So ransacking the overpriced low quality electronics, she picked up some cables, battery packs, and fuck it some USB sticks as well. Wifi was not guaranteed anywhere they were going! Plus she had the bag space.

She was also beginning to realize how tired she was getting. Deciding to do something about it before she got too tired to function while they were on the run, she went over to the coffee section, grabbed herself a drink carrier and all the biggest cups she could get her hands on, and began to pour! Except.... There was no coffee. "....mother fuckers...." Then she peaked her head over the shelves to call out to the clerks. "Hey! All your machines are out of coffee!" Even if they began to make more now, she didn't want to stay here any longer than she needed too. Time for plan B. On her way over, she took time to stop for the things she told the group she was going to grab. Pads and toothpaste! Also... out. "Son of a shite..." she mumbled, sounding more defeated than anything. This was going to be a long apocalypse. She did however, get one victory! The energy drinks. Nearly totally untouched! Dumb shit panic buyers had no idea what they were missing out on! Cases and cases of Caffeine! Setting down the basket and crawling into the fridge to grab the unopened cases from around the shelving units she dragged them out, carrying far, far more than she probably could safely carry. But she was preparing for the long haul. Setting the shopping basket ontop of the tower of cases she was carrying she stumbled to the counter. "Got what I need, let me know if y'all need some help yeah?" She called out to the others in her group.

Setting down her loot horde on the counter to buy out she paused, turned around, and grabbed a couple random snack and food items from a nearby shell. "This, should be all from me. And uh, put the stuff from the other ladies on this card too yeah?." She said pulling out her credit car and sliding it over to the clerk. "Oh! If you're willing to part with it I'll buy the gun behind the counter, name your price!" She joked with the dumbest smile on her face. But hey, maybe she could walk out of here armed. But it was mostly just a joke to hide how panicked she was.
