[IC] Post Apocalypse Drop-In Worldbuilding

Lets create a post apocalyptic world. When laws and governments break down, the world will go on and a new world will rise in place of the last one. What will that be like?

Lets start from a zoomed out viewpoint (what has become of previous states, cities, and countries?) then we work in the smaller details.

What became of the continents and countries from before? What about the cities and what has been built in their place? Ruins of old cities, "nations," gang territories, villages, and even places that resulted from the apocalyptic event(s) go here (such as seas of radiation, wastelands, old battlefields, etc.)

What happened to the world? It must've been a number of things. In addition to that there are theories. What major things have happened since? Old and new wars, natural disasters, major disease outbreaks, massacres, foundings, discoveries, inventions, and other events go here.

What kinds of weapons, armors, drugs, and other things were invented before the Old World collapsed? What weapons, armors, drugs, food recipes, and other things have been invented since? What things like scepters and tomes do the new religious cults place value in? This category also includes things that may have once belonged to important people.

Factions

Gangs, cults, remnants of old governments, mercenary companies, merchant companies, tribes, and bands of survivors go here.

Creatures

What mutants exist in this world? Are there robots/androids? Are there aliens planning to invade or who have invaded? Creatures specific to this world go here.

Characters

Important people such as inventors, cult leaders, gang leaders, people who may be responsible for the collapse of the Old World, and possibly even "heroes" go here. Eventually new history books will be written. Who will they write of?

Location

Rado

Like much of the rest of the world, Colorado fell into a state of anarchy and chaos as a result of a number of domestic and foreign conflicts followed by the breaking down of the US government. While various nuclear and biological weapons were utilized which damaged the environment initially, Rado is now a lush green place where nature is flourishing. This is thanks in part to a smaller human population than before and the fact nobody can get any of the motor vehicles to run.

While The Nobility controls the middle and North Colorado, various tribes, cults, and cannibals inhabit the surrounding areas.

Faction

The Crystal Cult

The world after the Fall is full of monsters in the shape of humans, some more terrible than others. The Crystal Cult is particularly heinous group of raiders. Based in the ruins and Red Prairie East of Denver, this group worships "the crystal" which enhances their combat capabilities. On it they feel no hunger, no pain, no fear and no fatigue but it come at a cost. The crystal makes a user a super soldier for a time, but continued use rots a person from the inside. Long term side effects include a loss of grip on reality, increased aggression, general apathy and eventually a loss of humanity.

Crystal cultists are typically scrawny and dirty with sunken but alert eyes. Scabs and scars are typically commonly seen on their bodies from self harm and survived altercations, usually where they are the aggressor. Many are sadists and their territory is littered with corpses ad viscera. They wield crude, rusted weapons such as nail bats and crow bars but some of them have guns (usually in poor condition) and some can craft firearms from pipes and other debris. They have an arena crafted from junk, where they send captives from their raids in other parts of Rado to be slaughtered for entertainment. They are enemies to everyone else they come across.

Location

Perth, Western Australia, Australia

When the world came to an end, Australia was noticeably hit harder by changing environmental forces than most. Western Australia, already rather inhospitable and home to a number of industrial practices that further degraded the environment such as coal mining, found itself outright abandoned by human life as they either fled for most habitable areas or died out due to resource isolation.

However, as is the nature of life and the environment, nature abhors a vacuum. A new breed of wildlife and plant life that either endured the collapse or evolved in the conditions afterwards has sprung up and are reclaiming the state at a slow but steady pace.

While the ruined buildings of humanity remain in the city of Perth, covered in fresh plant life, stories speak of new inhabitants.

Creatures/Faction

Theorised to be the descendants of the octopus family of creatures, the octopi are an amphibious species of humanoid that have very recently started to emerge from the waters of Western Australia around the city of Perth. The species seems to possess the ability to ‘shape shift’ to an incredible degree, maintaining a more traditional octopus like body which they primarily use to swim around, but also able to change their shape into a more human like base structure… through there are notable differences.

For starters, the texture of the octopi’s skin is ‘rubbery’ and closer to that of their primary octopus like bodies than human flesh. They are also able to change the coloration and patterns along their flesh at will, likely an evolved form of their original ability to camouflage themselves… through it seems like they prefer bright, inhuman colours: if this is a sign of them being poisonous or venomous or simply them preferring bright colours for cultural reasons is unknown to outsiders at this time.

When in their humanoid form, they lack hair. Instead, growths akin to their tentacles seem to grow from their heads in a hairlike manner. They have one thumb and three fingers on each hand. Regardless of form they are in, their octopus like pupils remain the same.

At this time, the Octopi species appears to be in a late tribal, early city state point of societal development.

Event

World War 3. The battle is not faught with nukes thank god, but it does cause catestropic impacts of the United States. One of the biggest militarys in the world is having to try and prevent attacks on the homeland. Battles break out in all different states from various Axis counties such as Russia, Germany, Iran, Iraq (and more if need be), with little allies on trying to help keep the States from falling apart.

The Bastards

Prior to the rise of The Nobility the Colorado wasteland, now called "Rado," was home to countless warring gangs. Many died in these constant power struggles between gangs, and each day at least one gang would be wiped out. Every now and again, however, one or two would survive. Eventually, survivors from several gangs formed a gang, but instead of following one set of tactics and focusing only on killing and raiding, this gang explored knowledge. They knew it was valuable. They taught each other what they knew and held no prejudice against each other. In all their knowledge and drive to improve lied their power. They went from a single man with a revolver and his adopted son to the most feared gang in the wasteland.

They Bastards did raid, and they did murder, but they held certain values which they would teach to their allies. Everyone was responsible for their own work, so there would be no slaves. In addition they despised true savages who raped and cannibalized. There came a point where the majority of Rado was relatively safe for a commoner, though Bastards were brutal to their enemies. But this wouldn't last long, as eventually The Nobility spawned from a military base from the Old World somewhere south of Denver. Their military grade weapons gave them an edge, and soon they took over half the Denver area while the Bastards weren't paying attention. There were an army of Nobility and while The Bastards had many supporters, there were only a handful of real Bastards.

Eventually, those supporters who weren't killed surrendered or kept silent. The Bastards resorted to hit and run tactics, which still gave The Nobility hell. This went on for five years, but a handful of Bastards got sick of life as it were, and accepted The Nobility's proposal. One night when a battalion of Noble soldiers went to stomp out the remains of The Bastards, the betrayers who weren't already among the ranks of Nobles got the drop on the Bastards. Many Nobles died, but in the end all the Bastards were killed. At least thats what most of the people of Rado believe.

Items

Modern technology would be the go-to standard for the military to use, but every nation has its own speical bag of tricks. The more technologically advanced the country, the more high-tech they have. Everyone else left to try and survive the battleground of the states, is left to whatever they managed to stockpile before everyone invaded in an instant. Gas and prices of goods are THREW THE ROOF with heavy tax and inflation so stealing is the better option as of late.

Location

Laska

Throughout the American continent's and even across the sea, a mythical frozen place is spoken of. Laska is said to be a place of eternal winter, a place that always was winter. No matter where you go, folks that don't immediately kill you would tell you Laska is "far to the North." Always the North. Some cults and religions believe it is their version of Hell or a part of Hell; the wicked are punished to live in a place that will always be frozen and nothing ever grows. Some believe it is the afterlife of those who have died of suicide, as they heard old stories of people who went there to escape everyone else.

Examples:

United States: They have developed laser burst canon technology. It shoots a one-second burst every 4 seconds at a max range of 60ft. Best used in close combat. Laser is made from ultraviolet light and is extremely hot in temperature. now given to all front-line infantry.

China: Currently working on better versions of the atomic bomb in order to find a way to cause drastic damage without the devastating radiation that a nuke would do. They plan on calling it a C Bomb.
England: Working on better radar detection systems and hacking into different satellites from the other enemy countries to take control of them and their access to information. Front line new skill is a drop shield that is 10 ft long and 10 feet wide that can take a considerable amount of damage before it is destroyed.

Location

The Indonesian Cannibal Pirate Kingdoms

With the rapid changes in ocean level as the ice caps melted, a great deal of the islands that once made up Indonesia have disappeared under the waves. Few of those islands that remain are able to produce resources such as food and overpopulation is common. As such, marauding and piracy has become the standard way of life, since it is one of the only means of gaining enough supplies to survive long term.

While proper food is a priority for these raids, the lack of fertile ground in the region and issues with local sea life due to changing climate and over-fishing has caused a rather dark change to the definition of 'food'. Those killed during these conflicts are generally destined to end up on the menu, while captives taken will often be treated as cattle to help fight the hunger of the victorious band and their respective island.

While their raids and conflicts are often with each other, on occasion one of them will launch a raid or attack outside of the Indonesian area. These raids are viewed by their neighbors with a high degree of dread.

Location - A Series of Events

Foundation of Gibb.

Originally an inland settlement in Western Australia, Gibb became a coastal ruin due to the environmental shift and rising sea levels that caused Western Australia to be abandoned by humanity. It would not stay abandoned however. A tribe of Octopi would move into the region in time and, discovering various written words left behind by the elder race that had originally lived there, opted to retain the name Gibb... at least in writing. They pronounce it very differently then the humans of old did.

In time, the city state of Gibb would start to attract other tribes of Octopi interested in trade... and in time other cities from the south. Octopi explorers, colonists and fortune seekers seeking to discover new lands, establish new homes and discover what resources were out there would from over the Octopi world would gather in Gibb as a staging ground towards the northern part of their known world.

While not the grandest of the Octopi city states, Gibb was a prestigious one and generally well respected among their peers.

First Contact

The exploration of the Octopi at Gibb was mostly focused along the coast, with a handful of expeditions heading inland. However, one expedition opted to swim out north in order to see what was out there. No one from this expedition returned and the Gibb Octopi took their disappearance as a sign that they should focus their exploration efforts in other directions they were better prepared for.

Unknown to Gibb, the doomed north expedition had actually found land. And a complete new and alien people they had never seen before!

Unfortunately for them, this new land and people they had discovered was one of the southern most islands of Indonesia. The human occupants left none alive and discovered two things that day. The first was that the strange octopus creatures tasted pretty damn tasty. The second was that Australia might not have been such a lifeless waste as was originally believed.

Bloodshed at Gibb

It took the pirate scouts some time to locate Gibb; While it had become a center for the Octopi in the north of their known world, the Australian coastline was rather big and the logistics of scouting along it required covering a lot of ground. It was via running into an exploration group of Octopi exploring the coast that the scouts started to narrow it down (as well as remain in the field longer due to having new provisions).

The raid on Gibb was a time of firsts for both the attacker and defender. While the humans were raiders by lifestyle and profession, they had never assaulted an Octopi settlement before. For the Octopi... this was the first time one of their settlements had ever been truly assaulted with hostile intent. They had built some defenses in order to help protect them from wild animals from both inland and the water, but until this point there had never been a need for the Octopi to fight amongst each other; This was the first time in their history that an intelligent being capable of thought opted for violent hostility.

The raiders hit hard and fast during the night. The Octopi, many still in the process of waking up scared and confused did not get the opportunity to organize a defense against such a fast, organized assault. Those that tried to fight back were killed or maimed to die slowly. Many were taken by the raiders. The pillaging continued until their boats were full of slaves and whatever seemed worth taking at the time. What they couldn't take, they set fire too.

A third of the population of Gibb were killed or taken in a single night... and their homes on land were burning.

The start of the First Octo-Human war.

While the majority of Gibb was shell-shocked by what had happened and word began to trickle down to the other city states of what happened, a group of Octopi hunters that had managed to escape into the ocean when the raiders came bravely decided to follow the boats. Their motives for doing so were many and interlinked, ranging from trying to save friends and family to seeking vengeance on the monsters who had attacked them unprovoked, but they followed all the same.

The pursuit lasted for days, with the Octopi opting to go without sleep in order to keep up with the raiders... but not catching up with them until the boats reached land. While the desire to launch an attack right then and there was strong, the hunting party was exhausted and the enemy's numbers had increased as those who had remained on the island appeared to help celebrate the return of an overwhelming successful raid. A frontal assault was suicide, so the party opted to find a hidden location nearby and set up camp.

Once they had rested up and scavenged from what little was available under the waves, the hunting party would sneak onto land under cover of darkness. Their goal was to find and liberate their people. They found their people but... nowhere near as many as had been taken. The traumatized survivors... or at least those still able to talk, told a harrowing tale of what happened to the rest of their people.

While the urge to avenge their murdered and consumed people was strong, the hunters knew that they were the only ones who knew the way back home and that without them, the people they could save wouldn't make it back alive. And they now knew where their vile enemy lived. With vows to return one day to wipe this nest of monsters out to the last, the Octopi focused on getting those they could save home. They would not be taken by surprise like this again.

The pirates for their part were furious when they discovered that some of their recently occupied slave pens were empty and those guarding them were dead, but they still had a few pens deeper in and they now knew where this tasty and ill prepared new source of meat could be located. They had some time to rest and prepare for another raid. Plus they needed to let the stupid creatures pretending to be people a chance to repopulate a bit before the harvest.

Location: Ruin City

After the collapse of the high-rises, this town used bulldozers to move the rubble to form high walls around the heart of their town, forming four quarters with the town hall in the center. There's still power here, thanks to a geothermal plant they were able to repair after the earthquakes. It powers their radio, which can be picked up for miles. Crews work the farms in the surrounding countryside.

The only quarter open to outsiders is the Market Quarter, where scavengers sell their findings and buy up useful tools and goods. It's also hear where you'll find the whipping post and the gallows.

Location: Old Town

Located just outside of Ruin City's Market Gates are the remains of one of the neighborhoods. A saloon serves decent homemade beer and whiskey, with lively entertainment. A doctor still practices here, as does a barber and a dentist, dealing mostly in barter.

Everyone in Old Town is armed, most are decent shots.

Located in a desert, this looks like a missile base, surrounded by two chain-link fences and watched over by the guard towers that will shoot at any intruder outside or between the fences. But you never see the person shooting....

If cut, the chain-linked fence mends itself. People stepping in the area between the two fences and not at the gates get sucked down into the sand. Those who make it past these barriers will find the few doors are locked and the hatch covers firmly in place.

Any radio will squeal with inhuman noises.

Location

Narr (Or Narr Land)
There is a place in the south of the continent once known as North America full of swamps where the giant, razor sharp maw of one hungry creature or another awaits anyone dumb enough to go for a swim. Here, the air feels like hot soup, but its not just the sweltering heat and the monsters waiting beneath the surface of the water that people in Narr need to worry about.

Although a former acting government managed to protect the main urban center from the rising sea, this government is no more, and a new gang takes control of the territory roughly every other week. Magic rituals from the Old World are practiced here, and most warriors partake in prayers or rituals before battle, and sometimes afterwards to thank their respective deity. Other societies that know of Narr know it as a place of witchcraft and cultists.

The few restored buildings from the Old World and the tree houses in the swamp are outnumbered by battered and flooded ruins, and many areas must be traversed by boat. When the people of Narr aren't killing each other or performing dark rituals, they play various forms of music and cook spicy food made from local wildlife, including shrimp, crawfish, and occasionally, human. Once every year, there is a truce between conflicting factions in the city, as they celebrate "Marty Graw."

Character - Justin Tyrell (Ruin City)

Mayor of Ruin City.

This man makes you think of a clockwork mechanism. His right eye is blue, while there's a knife scar running down from his left eyebrow to his cheek, giving him a clouded eye and a permanent smirk. His thick, straight, midnight black hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a rocky outcropping. He is tall and has a wide-chested build. His skin is tanned. His wardrobe is classy, very business-type.

His injury came from one of the scavengers who lived in Old Town. Justin had come up from behind and when he touched their shoulder, they reacted by turning and slashing downward, cutting the mayor's face.

Event: The First Ocotpi-Human war- Beginnings

The first Octopi-Human war started due to a raid by the southern most Indonesian pirate kingdom assaulted and pillaged the Octopi city state of Gibb.

While the more southern Octopi city states were naturally outraged due to the violence done to their people by alien outsiders, when those rescued from the slave pens returned to Gibb with tales of what was happening to those taken caused fear, disgust and fury unseen in the species history.

Resources and volunteers flooded towards Gibb in order to rebuild the city and plan for the true counter offensive. The Octopi had never needed a standing, professional army but militia forces and hunting parties to deal with dangerous animals in defensive and offensive manners respectively became the foundation of one.

The veteran hunters who had successfully launched the counter raid would instruct their peers and newly recruited hunters on their new ‘prey’, while those with more defensive ideals would learn what they could of enemy tactics in order to develop more effective ways of defending settlements from future attacks.

Both would be put to the test during the battle of Gibb, when the raiders returned.

Location:Desperado Land a.k.a Former DFW area

Once a busy metropolis of various cities all working together in harmony and peace. But now, if you make a wrong turn you could end up losing everything on your person or even your life. The state was split apart during the war and now there was only rebellion and chaos in every city. Eventually, the area became so run down that very few ventured here. The heat is unbearable a majority of the year only having relief from the pain in a 2 month winter. The drought has been the worst part, with all vegetation dying at various rates from the lack of rain and even having an impact on the animals and creatures in the area. You can buy good favors here if you can supply a good form of clean drinking water.

There are 2 main cities within this land, former Dallas is now known as Disaster-ville. This is basically where all the criminals call home. It is a bit overpopulated in the remaining buildings that were not destroyed in the riots and fires. From lack of maintenance, most of the skyscrapers in downtown were destroyed beyond recognition.

The second city is the former Fort Worth now renamed Longhorn Town. This is where everyone in town currently is trying to do everything they can to keep the remaining livestock alive mainly consisting of bulls, cows, pigs, horses, etc. They are not kind to strangers who come through but they won't right rob you immediately.

The Floating City

Massive cables anchor the floating college town of Caltek to the shore that was once known as Pasadena. To get to the city, one must ride a "cable car" that moves inside the massive cables, but one must have either a Caltek medallion or a curious document known as an "Acceptance Letter."

It is said many hope to become professors and gain permanent residency status know as "tenure." Those that fail find themselve exiled to the surface.

As to how Caltek stays suspended in the air, it's whispered to be the result of contragravity generators. Few on the island or below seem to understand it, leading to doomsday whispers of "the big splash."

Wings

This is a bar in the remains of Old Pasadena, said to be the unofficial watering hole for those expelled by Caltek. The walls are covered with chalkboards and many formulas and equations, chief among them the enimatic e=mc².
